- [00:00:04.350]Students from different design disciplines
- [00:00:06.930]work together to turn a relic of our nation's past
- [00:00:10.770]into a facility for global climate research.
- [00:00:14.700]An abandoned missile site near Seward, Nebraska offers
- [00:00:18.540]students and Associate Professor Brian Kelly's Design 410
- [00:00:23.610]Collaborate Studio, a rare opportunity.
- [00:00:27.720]So the students are designing a renovation
- [00:00:30.030]of an Atlas F missile silo
- [00:00:31.440]from the 1960s Cold War Vintage era.
- [00:00:34.800]It is a project that is part
- [00:00:36.300]of the Grand Challenges program here at UNL.
- [00:00:38.610]So the students are designing a research facility
- [00:00:40.380]for ice drilling and testing the equipment that is used
- [00:00:45.120]in Antarctic situations before they go out
- [00:00:47.580]and drill on site.
- [00:00:48.750]Additionally, there is exhibition spaces
- [00:00:50.580]for Cold War history and for Earth and Atmospheric sciences,
- [00:00:55.470]as well as educational spaces for,
- [00:00:59.160]you know, conducting research.
- [00:01:00.990]So the silo is 180 foot deep
- [00:01:04.020]by 50 foot diameter cylinder in the ground.
- [00:01:06.450]So it is an empty space right now filled
- [00:01:08.640]with approximately 7 million gallons of water.
- [00:01:11.340]It's a challenge of trying to figure out
- [00:01:13.230]how to use this really substantial piece
- [00:01:16.230]of concrete that's in the ground, which is the silo itself
- [00:01:19.020]and then being able to add on to that with new facilities.
- [00:01:21.660]Students in architecture, landscape architecture
- [00:01:25.200]and interior design work side by side
- [00:01:28.260]to solve whatever problems come up during the renovation.
- [00:01:32.400]Our team has landscape architecture, students architecture
- [00:01:36.570]and then interior design.
- [00:01:38.070]I will say something and then the input is usually
- [00:01:41.610]something that I hadn't thought about before.
- [00:01:43.590]So they're all considered together and that's strange
- [00:01:46.530]but it's also exciting 'cause I get to, you know,
- [00:01:48.750]get all those different perspectives at the same time.
- [00:01:52.020]The project that we have right now feels more fleshed out
- [00:01:55.560]than any project that I've done so far.
- [00:01:58.170]So I think that kind of speaks
- [00:01:59.400]to having all three disciplines in one project.
- [00:02:03.065](upbeat music)
