- [00:00:04.410]A Collaborate Studio project makes fun and games
- [00:00:07.980]the focus of a state park redesign.
- [00:00:12.360]Architecture, interior design,
- [00:00:14.310]and landscape architecture students team up
- [00:00:17.460]with Nebraska Extension
- [00:00:19.530]and early childhood educators
- [00:00:22.140]to design a new visitor center and nature-based playground
- [00:00:26.430]at Indian Cave State Park.
- [00:00:29.220]We've been researching and asking the question,
- [00:00:32.040]how can landscape architecture collaborate
- [00:00:34.680]with early childhood educators
- [00:00:37.050]to design better outdoor spaces for children
- [00:00:40.050]that incorporates play, learning,
- [00:00:42.030]and the relationship to the natural environment?
- [00:00:44.580]So the work the students are doing
- [00:00:46.710]at Indian Cave State Parks
- [00:00:48.390]builds upon the nature-based play guide
- [00:00:50.670]developed by Nebraska Game and Parks.
- [00:00:53.370]This project has been really fun
- [00:00:55.080]and I think it's a really unique project.
- [00:00:57.390]I don't think me or my classmates
- [00:00:58.980]have ever gotten to work on a play skate before,
- [00:01:01.290]and so it's just really interesting to learn
- [00:01:03.690]a lot of the theory and the best practices behind it.
- [00:01:06.630]A key partner in the project
- [00:01:08.640]is the Ruth Staples Lab School on East Campus,
- [00:01:12.930]where nature-based play is one of their foundations.
- [00:01:16.740]Children are intrinsically motivated to explore,
- [00:01:19.860]and when that environment that they explore in
- [00:01:22.560]is in the outdoor space, natural space,
- [00:01:25.920]then they build strong connections
- [00:01:29.040]with the world around them.
- [00:01:30.510]I think what makes me so excited about this project
- [00:01:33.120]is it's an opportunity to integrate evidence-based design
- [00:01:37.170]into the studio learning environment,
- [00:01:39.450]and then look at opportunities
- [00:01:41.310]to advance outdoor environments
- [00:01:42.870]for children across the state.
