[00:00:00.450]Well extension has been an integral part of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
[00:00:04.020]throughout its more than 150 year history.
[00:00:06.720]And while that remains true today, the needs of Nebraskans and rural America
[00:00:10.590]continue to change over time.
[00:00:12.720]Well, Dean of Nebraska Extension Dr. Charles Stoltenow joins us now.
[00:00:16.890]Known as Dr. Charlie, thank you so much for being here.
[00:00:21.180]So let's talk about how Nebraska Extension is adapting to all of these changes.
[00:00:28.170]Thanks, Suzanne, how are we adapting to the changes?
[00:00:31.410]You know, in Nebraska, we have 93 counties, we have 83 offices, but extension is
[00:00:37.350]always listening.
[00:00:38.220]Always listening to the people out there, whether it's urban or rural.
[00:00:41.520]And one of the things we're hearing, and we're reacting to is, there are five
[00:00:45.630]points or five major conversations that are going on in Nebraska.
[00:00:49.740]And they they center around developing a skilled workforce, reducing healthcare
[00:00:54.150]costs, creating statewide economic viability and vitality, retaining and
[00:00:59.910]attracting young people, and leveraging our strengths for sustained success.
[00:01:04.890]And so our response to that is, as we thought about this, we need to focus and
[00:01:09.570]so we're calling we're launching what we call the big three.
[00:01:13.530]We're in the big 10, we're Go Big Red, and the big three kind of resonated.
[00:01:18.090]And the big three are strengthening Nebraska agriculture and food, inspiring
[00:01:24.810]Nebraskans and their communities, and enhancing the health and well being of all
[00:01:28.890]Nebraskans.
[00:01:29.820]And so those are the big three areas that we're coming in.
[00:01:32.280]So Dr. Charlie, this really allows the voice of the community to be heard.
[00:01:37.920]As we look at agriculture and food, we've always been strong.
[00:01:42.930]Nebraska has always been strong in ag and food.
[00:01:45.450]And food is on people's minds at least three times for myself probably four
[00:01:49.350]times a day, and you look at inspiring Nebraskans.
[00:01:53.460]We want we're talking about how do we build help youth development?
[00:01:58.890]How do we build leaders?
[00:02:00.270]How do we help our communities become stronger, and to grow.
[00:02:03.994]And then on health and well being, health is part of everybody's life and well being.
[00:02:08.460]We've always been there, but we have a whole new emphasis in that area.
[00:02:11.660]So extension obviously so suited to Nebraskans, and facing these challenges
[00:02:16.273]addressing these issues.
[00:02:17.730]And it is so important to continue.
[00:02:19.650]And if you could speak to that, that why this is such a need.
[00:02:24.720]Well, as we look forward, you know, extension serves the needs, serves everyone
[00:02:29.210]in the state.
[00:02:29.940]And so we want to look at what's unifying.
[00:02:32.610]We have great personnel, we have a great infrastructure, but we're branching out.
[00:02:36.240]We're partnering with new partners, we're partnering with the School of Public
[00:02:39.923]Health, we're partnering with the University of Nebraska Medical Center, people
[00:02:43.652]that historically or groups who have not partnered with before.
[00:02:46.590]We're moving into our underserved populations.
[00:02:50.490]We are making a big effort into hiring people who are bilingual in a number of
[00:02:55.421]different languages.
[00:02:56.670]And so how do we reach out to where we're needed?
