- [00:00:00.240]Welcome back, 'Countdown at Kickoff'.
- [00:00:01.440]Huskers and Hawkeyes set to wrap up the regular season here
- [00:00:04.320]this afternoon, 3:01 kickoff time here at Kinnick Stadium.
- [00:00:07.230]And as we do every week during the pregame show,
- [00:00:09.180]a chance to catch up with a chancellor
- [00:00:10.440]from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:12.540]Happy Thanksgiving to you.
- [00:00:14.040]Wow, what a weekend for sports.
- [00:00:15.330]What a day for sports.
- [00:00:16.830]We've got two basketball games, a football game,
- [00:00:18.780]and a volley, pretty big volleyball match tonight.
- [00:00:21.180]Yeah, indeed, Greg.
- [00:00:22.380]You know, so hopefully
- [00:00:23.213]everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday
- [00:00:25.140]or going to have it,
- [00:00:26.130]whenever they get a chance to have it
- [00:00:28.170]during this Thanksgiving holiday.
- [00:00:29.640]We've got so much to be grateful for in our lives
- [00:00:32.400]and I know that this time of year,
- [00:00:34.590]we really pause to think about that.
- [00:00:36.360]We've got a lot to be grateful for
- [00:00:37.860]as a university, certainly,
- [00:00:39.240]and the opportunity that we have to be transformational
- [00:00:42.810]in the lives of our students and the public.
- [00:00:45.840]And you know, athletically, yeah, it's a little busy, right?
- [00:00:48.330]We've got a huge volleyball match coming up tonight
- [00:00:52.800]with Wisconsin and hopefully we break that,
- [00:00:55.740]that spell or whatever it's been with the Badgers
- [00:00:59.568]in volleyball, very much in the Big Ten race
- [00:01:03.300]for the title with our volleyball team.
- [00:01:05.250]And looking forward to that.
- [00:01:06.720]Women's basketball in Puerto Rico
- [00:01:08.850]and games underway there for the weekend.
- [00:01:12.330]And just always a special time of year
- [00:01:14.970]when we hit Black Friday
- [00:01:16.290]and we have the opportunity to be playing the Hawkeyes.
- [00:01:20.640]So looking forward to a great game today.
- [00:01:22.380]Chancellor, we've had a chance throughout the Fall
- [00:01:24.060]to talk about the Go Big project,
- [00:01:25.560]which is manned and yet it's amazing,
- [00:01:27.120]the progress that has been on that amazing project
- [00:01:30.120]for Husker Athletics
- [00:01:31.710]but I know there is another construction project
- [00:01:33.840]about to kick off
- [00:01:34.950]that's gonna be really noticeable to our fans
- [00:01:37.500]the next time they're back in Lincoln
- [00:01:38.820]and they go to Memorial City.
- [00:01:39.750]And what's this all about?
- [00:01:40.890]Yeah, it seems like, you know,
- [00:01:42.870]Memorial Stadium is kind of
- [00:01:43.980]at the center of a lot of construction
- [00:01:45.720]from every direction, right?
- [00:01:47.460]So as the Go Big project enters its final phases
- [00:01:50.850]here the next six months and goes online for us next June,
- [00:01:53.970]we're all excited about that.
- [00:01:56.460]During the season,
- [00:01:57.360]you've been able to kind of see it get closed in.
- [00:02:00.712]During that period of time,
- [00:02:03.090]you know, we had the business building open,
- [00:02:06.000]not that many years ago at the end of Memorial Plaza,
- [00:02:08.580]a new education building that opened in that same vicinity
- [00:02:11.430]earlier this fall with Carolyn Pope Edwards Hall.
- [00:02:14.250]And then, starting next month,
- [00:02:17.550]we're going to have construction
- [00:02:19.080]occurring on the southwest corner of campus.
- [00:02:21.390]So think Stadium Drive down at the end of Stadium Drive.
- [00:02:24.480]That Southwest corner
- [00:02:25.590]is where our music building is located,
- [00:02:27.900]the Westbrook Music Building,
- [00:02:30.300]that we will be taking down most of that building
- [00:02:34.320]and reconstructing a new home
- [00:02:36.180]for our Glenn Korff School of Music over the next two years
- [00:02:39.300]with the planned opening of that facility in 2025.
- [00:02:44.190]So when the fans return to the stadium next Fall
- [00:02:47.370]for our first home game,
- [00:02:48.510]and they gather in the arts quad
- [00:02:49.860]and listen to the Cornhusker marching band warm up
- [00:02:52.200]and march over to to Memorial Stadium,
- [00:02:55.620]they'll see that major construction project underway.
- [00:02:59.340]That will include a 75,000 feet construction,
- [00:03:04.170]square feet of construction, new facility.
- [00:03:06.720]It will cover
- [00:03:07.800]most of that whole southwest corner of our campus.
- [00:03:11.820]It will have a new recording studio
- [00:03:13.950]and a new rehearsal halls.
- [00:03:15.420]A new 300 seat recital hall will be part of that
- [00:03:18.900]and then refurbished recital facilities
- [00:03:20.970]for our students across all areas of music.
- [00:03:23.760]And it will be aligned for the first time
- [00:03:26.400]in a long time with the caliber
- [00:03:28.230]of our music program, which is nationally known.
- [00:03:32.460]It is funded with $75 million
- [00:03:35.460]from the LB384 funding from the state of Nebraska
- [00:03:39.750]combined with the university's funding.
- [00:03:42.450]And we're just so excited to see that
- [00:03:45.150]now at the point of kicking off and being underway.
- [00:03:47.400]I talked a little bit earlier this Fall, in September,
- [00:03:50.520]at the state of the University address
- [00:03:52.080]about remember those old kissing columns
- [00:03:54.270]that were in front of what is now the Go Big project,
- [00:03:58.860]they had to be moved from that kind of traditional location
- [00:04:02.220]there on the northeast corner of the stadium?
- [00:04:05.400]And I announced that they would be relocated
- [00:04:08.130]to that sector of campus
- [00:04:10.050]where the new music building will be.
- [00:04:11.670]So they will look into what was originally University Hall,
- [00:04:16.050]just north of 12th and Q Street
- [00:04:18.810]and will line the entrance to campus from the downtown there
- [00:04:24.570]when that project is complete.
- [00:04:26.040]So very excited for our music program
- [00:04:28.140]and the Hickson Lee College of Fine and Performing Arts.
- [00:04:30.540]Oh, that is fantastic.
- [00:04:31.620]Can't wait for that project to keep going
- [00:04:33.270]and see its completion.
- [00:04:35.520]Well, we only have a couple weeks left in the Fall semester.
- [00:04:37.680]It flies by so much.
- [00:04:38.670]We hope all the students got home safely for Thanksgiving.
- [00:04:41.010]We hope they all get back safely here in a day or so.
- [00:04:44.700]So it's also the time of the year that we get some,
- [00:04:46.530]some numbers from the NCAA
- [00:04:48.120]about student athlete graduation rates.
- [00:04:50.700]And I believe those have arrived.
- [00:04:52.680]How did we do?
- [00:04:53.820]Well, they have arrived
- [00:04:55.050]and we are very, very pleased
- [00:04:57.000]that our Husker athletes
- [00:04:58.950]earned a 95% graduation success rate
- [00:05:03.210]for the second straight year in a row.
- [00:05:05.100]Last year was the first time we'd ever hit 95%.
- [00:05:07.950]We'd been consistently going up
- [00:05:09.960]over a period of time before that.
- [00:05:12.990]This is the fifth consecutive year
- [00:05:15.510]that the rate has been above 90%
- [00:05:17.970]for Husker student athletes.
- [00:05:20.670]It is a rate that puts us at tie for third
- [00:05:25.380]in the Big Ten.
- [00:05:27.150]And it is even more impressive outside of the Big Ten.
- [00:05:30.210]And that we rank secondly
- [00:05:32.340]among 110 public universities in the FBS,
- [00:05:35.760]the Football Bowl Subdivision institutions across the board.
- [00:05:40.860]Our athletic department has always stressed academic success
- [00:05:44.310]and well-rounded student athletes.
- [00:05:45.990]As you know, that's a hallmark of Husker Athletics.
- [00:05:49.500]Our academic support staff is second to none in the country.
- [00:05:52.650]We're looked at as the national leader in that arena
- [00:05:56.700]because we have made earning a degree
- [00:05:58.860]from the University of Nebraska a priority
- [00:06:01.050]in our student athletes here for a long time.
- [00:06:04.080]10 of our Husker programs achieved a perfect 100%
- [00:06:08.790]graduation success rate, including women's basketball,
- [00:06:12.690]women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's tennis,
- [00:06:16.110]rifles, soccer, softball, volleyball,
- [00:06:18.810]swimming and diving, and men's tennis.
- [00:06:20.970]So we're very proud of all of those teams.
- [00:06:24.240]And I should mention that women's basketball,
- [00:06:26.490]women's tennis and volleyball,
- [00:06:28.350]have each had a perfect score
- [00:06:30.420]for the last 18 years in the NCAA.
- [00:06:34.500]And all of our programs had at least 88%.
- [00:06:38.100]So, you know, I can remember when we were kind of at
- [00:06:41.404]that level is an average,
- [00:06:43.740]with our football program at 92%,
- [00:06:46.590]wrestling at 95% and bowling at 90%,
- [00:06:50.580]all achieving the high scores they have ever received
- [00:06:54.450]in those sports.
- [00:06:55.410]So very, very happy for that great set of results
- [00:06:59.910]and graduation success rate for the NCAA
- [00:07:02.640]of our Husker student athletes.
- [00:07:04.050]A lot of hard work goes in by a lot of people
- [00:07:05.700]but you also need to credit the student athletes.
- [00:07:07.470]That's a hard thing to go to school
- [00:07:09.240]and put in all the hours in.
- [00:07:10.470]Yeah, I'm always marveled Greg,
- [00:07:12.510]I have to, I say this often,
- [00:07:14.670]I don't know how they do it.
- [00:07:16.320]I don't know how they prioritize
- [00:07:17.940]and make that work ethic
- [00:07:19.530]and it has to be there for that to be successful for them.
- [00:07:23.880]So just very proud of those results in the NCAA
- [00:07:27.420]for Husker Athletics.
- [00:07:28.620]Good to see you, enjoy your holiday weekend
- [00:07:30.090]and we'll be in touch soon.
- [00:07:31.050]You bet, go big red.
- [00:07:32.040]Ronnie Green with us here on 'Countdown to Kickoff'.
- [00:07:34.020]Matt Coney is up next
- [00:07:35.430]with a look at the Big Ten blitz.
- [00:07:36.545]That's straight ahead.
