- [00:00:00.577]"Fit & Healthy Kids,"
- [00:00:02.370]an early childhood podcast.
- [00:00:04.590]Hello from Nebraska Extension.
- [00:00:06.930]This is LaDonna Werth and Lisa Poppe, extension educators
- [00:00:11.130]in the field of early childhood.
- [00:00:13.620]We bring the research
- [00:00:14.820]from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, to you.
- [00:00:18.108](upbeat music)
- [00:00:19.757]As a parent, we enjoy reading to our children.
- [00:00:23.370]Children love to listen and ask questions as we read.
- [00:00:27.510]Lisa, how can we use stories to teach about emotions?
- [00:00:32.370]Children love to listen to stories.
- [00:00:34.830]Not only are stories used to entertain children,
- [00:00:37.470]they can also be used as tools
- [00:00:39.060]to teach new skills and expectations.
- [00:00:42.090]Many parents read books to teach their children the alphabet
- [00:00:45.480]or numbers, but stories can also be used
- [00:00:48.450]to teach social skills such as how to take turns
- [00:00:51.990]and to teach clear behavior expectations.
- [00:00:54.990]They are used to reinforce routines
- [00:00:56.850]such as getting ready for bed,
- [00:00:59.040]prepare for new experiences such as the first day of school
- [00:01:02.820]or address a challenging behavior such as hitting.
- [00:01:06.450]What are social stories and how can we use them?
- [00:01:10.530]Social stories are brief, simple stories
- [00:01:13.320]that are created to show your child what to expect
- [00:01:16.260]and what is expected of him during a certain activity.
- [00:01:20.220]Social stories can include pictures of your child,
- [00:01:23.310]and they're written in a way that he can understand.
- [00:01:26.670]They also use positive language to show your child
- [00:01:29.400]that he can do and provide healthy ways
- [00:01:32.070]to deal with really strong emotions.
- [00:01:34.740]For example, a social story that teaches a new skill
- [00:01:38.220]to replace hitting might say, "If my friend tries
- [00:01:41.850]to take my toy, I can say, 'Stop this toy is busy.'"
- [00:01:46.800]Social stories validate how your child actually feels,
- [00:01:50.760]but also can show him how others are feeling.
- [00:01:54.060]When used for specific situations,
- [00:01:56.880]social stories help children to make wise choices
- [00:02:00.210]and give them the confidence to try new experiences.
- [00:02:03.960]Lisa, can you give me an example
- [00:02:06.360]of a social story?
- [00:02:08.130]Sure. You must first choose a situation
- [00:02:11.220]that's been challenging for your child.
- [00:02:13.350]For example, if your child and her friend Ben
- [00:02:15.930]have been having problems with sharing when they play,
- [00:02:18.750]you can write a simple social story to teach her
- [00:02:21.420]how to share with him.
- [00:02:23.160]It might go like this.
- [00:02:25.237]"I feel excited when I go to Ben's house.
- [00:02:27.840]We play with trains, do puzzles, and build towers.
- [00:02:31.260]Sometimes we both wanna play with the same train.
- [00:02:34.140]If we both want the same toy, I have choices.
- [00:02:37.560]I can find another train and ask Ben to trade.
- [00:02:40.620]I can get a timer and we can take turns.
- [00:02:43.980]I can ask my mom for help,
- [00:02:46.020]or I can choose to play with something else.
- [00:02:48.660]I feel proud when I make wise choices."
- [00:02:52.080]As you can see, this type of social story
- [00:02:54.180]helps your child to see that her problem is normal,
- [00:02:57.660]teaches her words to help help her express her feelings
- [00:03:00.570]and gives her choices by telling her what she can do.
- [00:03:04.320]Social stories are very helpful to children
- [00:03:07.590]when they go into a new situation.
- [00:03:10.110]Like if your child is going on an airplane
- [00:03:12.510]for the first time,
- [00:03:14.280]you can create a social story to provide him
- [00:03:16.650]with clear expectations of what's going to happen.
- [00:03:20.910]I love reading books to children
- [00:03:23.010]and watching how the books come to life for them.
- [00:03:26.430]Is social stories a good way to teach children expectations?
- [00:03:31.650]Yes, they are.
- [00:03:33.240]Reading stories to your child provides a time
- [00:03:36.240]for everyone to relax.
- [00:03:38.040]These moments are a perfect time to teach your child
- [00:03:40.590]or talk to her about feelings.
- [00:03:42.570]Social stories are a great tool you can use
- [00:03:45.330]to teach your child expectations
- [00:03:47.430]or new skills before she's expected to use them.
- [00:03:51.030]When you read a book with your child again and again,
- [00:03:53.970]she feels confident about making choices
- [00:03:56.160]that help her to have a positive experience.
- [00:03:59.640]As a parent, it is fun to sit
- [00:04:02.190]in a chair and snuggle with your child.
- [00:04:05.970]Take this time to read and help your child
- [00:04:08.580]figure out new skills and guide them
- [00:04:11.070]through challenging behaviors.
- [00:04:13.563]This has been LaDonna and Lisa
- [00:04:15.660]with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:04:17.820]Until next time, enjoy your family time together.
