- [00:00:00.210]Welcome back, countdown to the kickoff,
- [00:00:01.380]Huskers and the Wisconsin Badgers here today
- [00:00:03.780]at Memorial City.
- [00:00:04.650]Our final, sadly, our final home game of the year of 2022.
- [00:00:09.270]It'll be senior day,
- [00:00:10.650]at least 12 Huskers are gonna be honored
- [00:00:12.450]before the game today.
- [00:00:14.130]And our chance to sit down and chat with the Chancellor
- [00:00:16.410]of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:18.720]This is always a kind of a sad day for me
- [00:00:20.610]'cause it's the last time
- [00:00:21.443]we're gonna step through these doors for a little while,
- [00:00:23.130]but a really special day for these seniors
- [00:00:24.780]and we wanna send 'em off the right way.
- [00:00:26.700]Oh, absolutely Greg.
- [00:00:28.020]You know, it's great to have Wisconsin in town
- [00:00:30.900]to play today.
- [00:00:31.860]And you know, something about Wisconsin
- [00:00:34.830]in November seems to go together for us
- [00:00:37.993]and great to be celebrating the seniors
- [00:00:41.310]and their final game.
- [00:00:43.230]Not only their final home game in Memorial Stadium today.
- [00:00:48.120]And appreciate the fans supporting them.
- [00:00:51.450]We know that we have the greatest fans in college sports
- [00:00:55.500]and their support here today is gonna be visible for us,
- [00:01:01.140]just loving to see how this team can play together,
- [00:01:04.020]how they can show their grit one last time here today
- [00:01:07.259]in Memorial Stadium in front of our great home crowd.
- [00:01:10.290]Still chance to build a momentum here
- [00:01:12.060]in the last two games of the season,
- [00:01:13.410]that certainly helps out a team during the off season.
- [00:01:15.480]Well, the university chancellor
- [00:01:17.280]made a huge announcement yesterday about the future,
- [00:01:19.650]a new campaign has been launched
- [00:01:22.020]by the University of Nebraska Foundation.
- [00:01:24.570]Tell us about this and how can Huskers be a part of this?
- [00:01:27.540]Well, Greg, it was a very exciting evening last night
- [00:01:29.910]at the Strategic Air Command Museum out of Ashland
- [00:01:33.030]with the trustees of the University of Nebraska Foundation
- [00:01:36.570]and announcing the public phase
- [00:01:39.660]of a 10 year comprehensive campaign
- [00:01:43.320]for the University of Nebraska Foundation.
- [00:01:45.300]And we actually started it five years ago in a silent phase.
- [00:01:50.640]So since 2018, we've been raising funds
- [00:01:53.970]that are supporting this campaign
- [00:01:56.280]and the next five years will be the public phase
- [00:01:59.460]of that campaign called Only in Nebraska,
- [00:02:02.970]a campaign for our university's future.
- [00:02:06.060]We're hoping to, in the course of the 10 year campaign,
- [00:02:10.380]have the 150,000 donors to the campaign
- [00:02:14.400]for the university
- [00:02:15.570]and to raise a total of $3 billion
- [00:02:17.790]across the University of Nebraska system.
- [00:02:20.640]At UNL, our goal is 1.5 billion of that total,
- [00:02:26.160]will be the largest single fundraising campaign
- [00:02:29.190]that we have ever done in our history.
- [00:02:30.930]To put it in context,
- [00:02:32.490]the last 10 year campaign for the foundation
- [00:02:35.460]which ended in about 2014 time period
- [00:02:38.970]was called the Campaign for Nebraska.
- [00:02:41.340]In that previous round,
- [00:02:42.390]I was kind of here for the final few years
- [00:02:45.240]of the public phase of that campaign,
- [00:02:48.060]raised a total of 1.9 billion.
- [00:02:50.220]So, this is a big campaign for us.
- [00:02:53.610]It will ensure that the University of Nebraska
- [00:02:56.640]is accessible to all students.
- [00:02:58.770]A very, very central theme part of this campaign
- [00:03:01.710]is support for students
- [00:03:03.930]both undergraduate students
- [00:03:05.940]as well as graduate students here at UNL.
- [00:03:08.580]A significant part of the campaign goal is in that arena.
- [00:03:13.080]It will invest in our faculty,
- [00:03:15.420]it will invest in our facilities
- [00:03:17.040]some of which we've already raised funding to support.
- [00:03:20.280]I think Kiewit Hall in our College of Engineering,
- [00:03:23.280]I think the Go Big project that we've talked about
- [00:03:26.430]a number of times here in Husker Athletics.
- [00:03:30.600]Private support for the university
- [00:03:32.490]has never been more important in our history.
- [00:03:35.070]Our foundation actually traces back here at UNL
- [00:03:39.240]to when the foundation's efforts first started in 1934,
- [00:03:42.750]so almost 100 years ago, going on 100 years ago.
- [00:03:46.200]But private philanthropy has never been more important to us
- [00:03:50.040]than it is today.
- [00:03:51.150]So, it's gonna be exciting and amazing
- [00:03:54.330]to see what we achieve in this campaign ahead.
- [00:03:58.050]And it's fitting that it's being called Only in Nebraska.
- [00:04:01.663]What our listeners may not know
- [00:04:04.170]is that amongst public universities,
- [00:04:06.690]the University of Nebraska is in the top 25
- [00:04:10.260]in terms of its foundation
- [00:04:12.150]and giving particularly on a per capita basis,
- [00:04:15.480]the generosity of Nebraskans
- [00:04:17.280]and our alums is really unmatched.
- [00:04:20.010]Only in Nebraska, love it,
- [00:04:21.120]that's a great slogan.
- [00:04:22.170]So, kudos to whoever came up with that.
- [00:04:24.180]Can you lay out maybe some of the top priorities,
- [00:04:26.910]fundraising priorities with this campaign?
- [00:04:28.300]Yeah, as I mentioned, Greg, the campaign for us,
- [00:04:32.250]now, this is across all of the system,
- [00:04:34.207]I'm really referring here
- [00:04:36.510]to the University of Nebraska Lincoln part of the campaign
- [00:04:40.530]is very focused on scholarships and support for students.
- [00:04:44.400]So, if you take our goal of 1.5 billion for UNL,
- [00:04:48.900]over a third of that is in support of students directly
- [00:04:53.640]for supporting the cost of their education.
- [00:04:58.770]So whether it's need based or merit based support
- [00:05:02.460]as I mentioned for both undergraduates
- [00:05:05.070]and graduate students across the institution.
- [00:05:09.000]Endowed faculty support for our world class faculty
- [00:05:12.540]and raising a record number of endowed chairs
- [00:05:16.290]for faculty across areas of importance to us.
- [00:05:20.550]The College of Engineering and the School of Computing
- [00:05:22.800]is a particular priority for us at UNL in this campaign
- [00:05:27.060]as we invest in growing and building
- [00:05:29.370]the stature of our College of Engineering
- [00:05:31.410]and the needs there,
- [00:05:33.450]not only in terms of the building infrastructure,
- [00:05:37.110]but also support for students
- [00:05:39.840]within the college of engineering.
- [00:05:41.310]And then the arts is a big area for us
- [00:05:46.020]including major renovation
- [00:05:47.820]of the Lied Center for Performing Arts
- [00:05:50.223]that is now in the planning phase
- [00:05:52.350]for getting underway here in the next couple of years.
- [00:05:55.980]And then of course athletics
- [00:05:58.680]is a key part of the campaign as well.
- [00:06:03.120]So, we're looking forward to a great five year period ahead
- [00:06:08.700]for us to not only meet that goal but to exceed it.
- [00:06:12.870]We expect in terms of the support raised
- [00:06:16.080]through Only in Nebraska.
- [00:06:17.310]Fantastic, wow.
- [00:06:18.270]Huge major excitement around all that
- [00:06:20.580]and I heard the event last night was fantastic.
- [00:06:23.700]Enjoy the game today.
- [00:06:25.230]Don't eat too much turkey next week
- [00:06:26.652]'cause we're gonna need you in good state
- [00:06:27.870]at Iowa on Friday.
- [00:06:28.980]Yeah, who would plan it this way, right?
- [00:06:32.970]So, we've got Black Friday of course and the Iowa game
- [00:06:36.177]and the tradition of the Iowa game
- [00:06:37.882]and then we got a little volleyball game
- [00:06:39.690]that day too, you know, going on.
- [00:06:41.070]It's an important game in the season
- [00:06:43.560]and toward the end of the season
- [00:06:44.940]as we gear up for the NCAA.
- [00:06:48.240]So just, yeah, we got a Friday to look forward to next week.
- [00:06:52.800]We sure do and I know students
- [00:06:53.760]are looking forward to little bit of a break too.
- [00:06:55.320]Absolutely.
- [00:06:56.460]Good to see you.
- [00:06:57.293]You bet, go big Red.
- [00:06:58.126]Ronnie Green with us here on countdown to kickoff.
- [00:06:59.820]Matt Coney is back
- [00:07:00.840]with our big 10 blips that's coming up next.
