- [00:00:00.210]Welcome back to Big Red on the Road,
- [00:00:02.310]Columbus Ohio against the Buckeyes.
- [00:00:04.590]Tonight we'll have a lot to say
- [00:00:05.820]on who ultimately wins the conference championship.
- [00:00:08.550]Hey, we have a special guest, Ronnie Green
- [00:00:11.670]the Chancellor of University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:13.410]one of the biggest volleyball fans ever,
- [00:00:15.780]along with your wife Jane.
- [00:00:17.010]All right, how do you like the Huskers?
- [00:00:17.843]You have to put that last part in there,
- [00:00:18.930]you know these, the biggest volleyball fan
- [00:00:21.000]in the world is Jane.
- [00:00:21.900]Jane surpasses you?
- [00:00:23.340]That's right.
- [00:00:24.173]All right, how do you like this
- [00:00:25.200]Husker volleyball team right now, Chancellor,
- [00:00:26.790]and what do you think the chances are the rest of the way?
- [00:00:29.130]Well, you know, they obviously are up,
- [00:00:31.080]are a high caliber team, right?
- [00:00:32.760]And they're fun to watch
- [00:00:33.990]and fun to see them continue to develop.
- [00:00:36.960]You know, it's nothing quite like Big 10 volleyball and
- [00:00:39.720]you know, the level of talent that exists
- [00:00:42.270]in the conference, you talk about it all the time
- [00:00:44.430]on the show and you know it, you have the Buckeyes again
- [00:00:48.630]you know, remembering that we went to five sets
- [00:00:51.090]with them earlier in the season back in Lincoln
- [00:00:53.610]and know that they're gonna have to play strong today
- [00:00:56.340]to win against top ranked team in the Buckeyes.
- [00:00:59.629]So just, you know, it's that time of year when
- [00:01:02.460]we just anticipate going to Omaha, right?
- [00:01:04.860]And looking forward to that, coming here.
- [00:01:06.450]Just not, no pressure but just looking forward
- [00:01:10.110]to the rest of the season.
- [00:01:11.280]Got it, now, something that's on your plate
- [00:01:13.200]and on your mind a lot is the status of Nebraska research.
- [00:01:17.250]Give us an update on how things are going.
- [00:01:19.200]Well, you know,
- [00:01:20.033]we are a major research intensive university
- [00:01:22.740]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:01:24.300]It's one of our equal parts of our mission
- [00:01:26.400]with education is our research program.
- [00:01:29.670]We're breaking continued records every year.
- [00:01:32.100]This past year broke our record again in terms
- [00:01:35.040]of research production at the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:01:38.130]at $326 million in research expenditures this past year.
- [00:01:42.300]And every year, the university celebrates
- [00:01:45.720]research days during November.
- [00:01:47.520]So it's actually coming up this week
- [00:01:49.860]and research days are at UNL,
- [00:01:51.960]starting out here tomorrow.
- [00:01:54.000]And looking forward to a great week ahead
- [00:01:57.060]with our research community.
- [00:01:58.530]One of the key things that is in that research week
- [00:02:01.261]is our Nebraska lecturer.
- [00:02:03.570]That's on Thursday this week on the 17th.
- [00:02:06.480]It's featuring one of our leading researchers, Angie Pannier
- [00:02:10.260]who is a professor of biological systems engineering.
- [00:02:13.260]And she's the Nebraska lecturer
- [00:02:17.340]which is a big honor to be selected from the faculty
- [00:02:20.280]twice a year for that lecture.
- [00:02:23.190]And her lecture on Thursday is discussing
- [00:02:26.130]DNA and RNA delivery from novel therapies to vaccines
- [00:02:29.730]that end pandemics.
- [00:02:30.780]Pretty timely issue.
- [00:02:33.051]Angie is a leading researcher in this field
- [00:02:36.570]and in this area.
- [00:02:38.160]So the topic couldn't be more, more timely.
- [00:02:40.830]Her lab has worked to understand and innovate DNA
- [00:02:44.460]and RNA delivery and of course, in this case
- [00:02:46.920]in a vaccine for Covid and to develop methods
- [00:02:50.730]to transfer those molecules more efficiently
- [00:02:53.370]into human cells to have their effects.
- [00:02:55.860]So she'll be talking in that lecture
- [00:02:58.685]and describing the history of gene therapy.
- [00:03:01.500]That's, that is that field that's developed from
- [00:03:04.920]and I'm looking forward to that lecture.
- [00:03:07.350]And of course, all throughout the week
- [00:03:09.960]a variety of activities,
- [00:03:11.460]a celebration of our innovators
- [00:03:13.110]and our researchers who helped the university this past year
- [00:03:17.070]to again rank in the top hundred institutions
- [00:03:19.800]across the world in earning patents
- [00:03:22.590]for the research that that is generated here
- [00:03:25.320]fifth year in a row that the
- [00:03:26.850]University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:03:28.290]has been listed in that group.
- [00:03:30.317]And we also have an open house coming
- [00:03:32.280]up at Nebraska Innovation Studio on Innovation Campus.
- [00:03:35.400]Our phenomenal makerspace at NIC.
- [00:03:38.790]So a lot of activities
- [00:03:40.440]around our research program and research days.
- [00:03:42.720]The chancellor, of course,
- [00:03:43.650]these Nebraska volleyball players are undergraduates.
- [00:03:46.200]To what extent do you wanna see current and future
- [00:03:48.750]undergraduates be able to participate
- [00:03:50.760]in this cutting edge research?
- [00:03:51.870]You know, absolutely.
- [00:03:53.850]I mean, they're exposed to this kind of thing
- [00:03:57.090]in the research program across the university
- [00:03:59.376]on a regular basis.
- [00:04:01.230]So we're very proud of the fact that the
- [00:04:03.840]University of Nebraska Lincoln is considered
- [00:04:05.910]one of the leaders nationally
- [00:04:07.440]in undergraduate research experiences.
- [00:04:09.990]What's called our UCARE program,
- [00:04:12.120]where students work directly with researchers
- [00:04:15.090]as part of their undergraduate program.
- [00:04:17.010]In fact, a number of volleyball players in the past
- [00:04:19.740]believe it or not, who have have been fine scholar athletes
- [00:04:24.540]as part of the tradition of Husker volleyball
- [00:04:26.700]have been involved in undergraduate research as well.
- [00:04:29.640]That's the chancellor, a big volleyball fan,
- [00:04:31.530]Ronnie Green joining us.
- [00:04:32.490]Hey, the head coach.
- [00:04:33.630]We come right back.
- [00:04:34.500]It doesn't get much bigger.
- [00:04:35.700]The Huskers at Ohio State, it's coming right up.
- [00:04:38.790]You're listening to Big Red Volleyball.
