- [00:00:00.210]We're back.
- [00:00:01.043]Ann Arbor, Michigan on the campus of the University
- [00:00:03.330]of Michigan, as we do every week, a chance to chat
- [00:00:05.400]with the chancellor from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:07.320]That's Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.400]Great to be here in Ann Arbor.
- [00:00:10.380]Beautiful, beautiful fall day with snow fluttering
- [00:00:13.260]You know, and when we left Lincoln, it was, it was cool.
- [00:00:16.890]Yeah, we put it mildly yesterday
- [00:00:18.540]when we were leaving Lincoln
- [00:00:19.560]and they were calling for snow in, in Michigan today.
- [00:00:23.280]And it's snowing so great to be here in the big house.
- [00:00:26.910]All of the tradition of the football program at Michigan
- [00:00:29.970]at the University of Michigan, you know, it's, they've
- [00:00:33.630]they've certainly are, are riding a good year.
- [00:00:37.140]As we were talking about the last time we were here
- [00:00:39.390]it was, you know, you know, they were still in a kind
- [00:00:42.420]of building phase and now they're, they're doing quite well.
- [00:00:45.240]And, and we're looking forward
- [00:00:47.100]to hopefully seeing our team play hard today.
- [00:00:49.410]We'd like to see if we can all put it, put it all together.
- [00:00:52.260]You, we had a really strong start last week
- [00:00:54.410]in the Minnesota game and
- [00:00:55.800]but we have to do it all four quarters
- [00:00:57.240]and so just great to be here today.
- [00:00:59.790]Great to be in this kinda iconic stadium
- [00:01:02.190]just like our stadium, an iconic stadium in
- [00:01:04.880]in the world of collegiate football
- [00:01:07.140]and looking forward to a great game today.
- [00:01:08.820]Right before you came in, we had Michigan's play
- [00:01:10.890]By play announcer, and he said that every time they come
- [00:01:14.160]to Lincoln, they are amazed at the game day atmosphere
- [00:01:17.280]how friendly and welcoming everybody is.
- [00:01:19.290]And we hear that and it's great to hear that
- [00:01:21.510]and I'm sure you're proud of hearing
- [00:01:22.950]Comics like that.
- [00:01:24.276]I I'm very proud to hear that.
- [00:01:25.109]I mean, we have the best fans in all of, all
- [00:01:26.580]of collegiate sports across the board.
- [00:01:28.410]You know, we celebrated that great 300 sellout
- [00:01:32.160]at the bob last night with our, with our volleyball team.
- [00:01:35.520]Just an unprecedented thing in women's sports.
- [00:01:38.220]And, and then, you know, we have to extend that
- [00:01:41.250]and say that really across all of the 22 sports that we
- [00:01:44.070]we field, you know, we, we really see that in Husker Nation.
- [00:01:48.600]You know, we were laughing, Jane and I were laughing this
- [00:01:51.150]morning because it seems like every time you come
- [00:01:53.100]to Michigan it's dark, you know?
- [00:01:55.660]Yeah. I'm sure that's not true on a everyday basis, but
- [00:01:59.100]but you know,
- [00:02:00.894]the case for a Husker nation being
- [00:02:03.630]the very best in the country is, is undisputed pretty Cool.
- [00:02:07.020]Speaking of landmark moments
- [00:02:09.060]300 sell out of volleyball last night.
- [00:02:10.860]We've got one on campus, the subject is 10.
- [00:02:13.740]You and the other university
- [00:02:14.850]and community leaders celebrated a big 10 year milestone
- [00:02:17.700]on campus this week.
- [00:02:19.020]I cannot believe we broke ground 10 years ago
- [00:02:21.870]on Innovation campus.
- [00:02:23.430]You know, I was there, Greg, I remember it really well.
- [00:02:26.640]And it was not
- [00:02:27.473]unlike the weather we're experiencing here today in
- [00:02:30.420]in Ann Arbor.
- [00:02:31.399]It was cold and windy and a little bit of snow spitting
- [00:02:34.560]in the ground and was, we stood there at Innovation campus.
- [00:02:37.920]The state fair had been moved couple
- [00:02:40.110]of years before the Grand Island to open the way
- [00:02:42.750]for the development of innovation campus.
- [00:02:45.240]And we were breaking ground
- [00:02:46.500]on what is now the conference center and the
- [00:02:48.561]the Nebraska Innovation Studio Space Innovation Commons.
- [00:02:52.740]That opened a couple of years later at that time.
- [00:02:56.370]And then to see what's happened in this last 10 years
- [00:02:59.190]with a world class food innovation center
- [00:03:01.800]a greenhouse innovation complex, 58 partners
- [00:03:06.120]on the campus and representing new startup companies
- [00:03:10.770]and new businesses under development
- [00:03:12.237]570,000 square feet that's been developed.
- [00:03:15.840]And then looking out really ahead
- [00:03:18.780]in the next couple of years
- [00:03:20.280]we're deep in the process of the development
- [00:03:22.800]of a new national lab for the US Department
- [00:03:25.080]of Agriculture to be built in innovation campus along
- [00:03:28.620]with a tech transfer facility for precision agriculture.
- [00:03:32.220]You, I know you have a lot of, lot of advertising.
- [00:03:34.260]We do HUSHKA radio for
- [00:03:36.360]for our ag community and looking forward
- [00:03:39.750]to that development that will take us upwards
- [00:03:41.850]of a million square feet in develop space on that campus.
- [00:03:46.020]That is hard to believe.
- [00:03:47.280]We've been able to have that happen in just 10 years.
- [00:03:50.790]We also, were seeing a lot
- [00:03:52.170]of development of big clusters there.
- [00:03:54.480]So we, we just announced the 25 million grant
- [00:03:58.077]in robotics to establish the Heartland Robotics
- [00:04:01.440]cluster that's to be centered at innovation campus tied
- [00:04:05.700]with Nebraska Engineering, the College
- [00:04:07.530]of Engineering at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:04:10.140]And then the last most recent thing that we
- [00:04:12.360]opened was the Scarlet Hotel on the campus
- [00:04:15.690]opened earlier this year in the spring
- [00:04:19.140]a themed boutique hotel
- [00:04:21.240]a Marriott brand hotel that is themed after Nebraska
- [00:04:25.170]after the University of Nebraska, where every town
- [00:04:27.870]in the state is, you know, every room in the hotel is themed
- [00:04:31.800]after a town in a community in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:04:35.010]And it is the anchor home for our hotel, restaurant
- [00:04:37.470]and tourism management program moving forward as well.
- [00:04:40.140]So, great celebration.
- [00:04:42.014]We also were kind of announcing
- [00:04:44.760]and celebrating the upcoming retirement of Dan Duncan
- [00:04:48.150]who has been the, the inaugural executive director
- [00:04:52.080]of the Nebraska Innovation Campus since 2012.
- [00:04:54.990]Dan announced he's going to retire here early in 2023.
- [00:04:59.370]We held onto him a little longer because of Covid, I think
- [00:05:02.400]than what would've, would've been the case otherwise.
- [00:05:04.800]But Dan's been a spearhead for the campus
- [00:05:08.010]the champion that's made it happen to this stage.
- [00:05:10.620]And as the chair of the innovation campus board
- [00:05:13.380]I really put out a strong salute to his leadership
- [00:05:16.500]for what he's brought to this first 10 years of, of N I C.
- [00:05:19.860]Absolutely. Again, visiting Ronnie Green Chancellor here
- [00:05:22.170]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln gonna get
- [00:05:24.210]into a topic that I know is near and dear to your heart
- [00:05:26.460]as we celebrate National First Gen College Student Day.
- [00:05:30.330]Why is it a priority
- [00:05:31.560]for the university to support these first gen Students?
- [00:05:34.290]Well, you know,
- [00:05:36.600]Greg
- [00:05:37.590]we are a line grant university and the
- [00:05:40.110]the number one word that describes land grant is access
- [00:05:44.790]access to high quality education.
- [00:05:48.090]I'm a first in educated student in my family.
- [00:05:51.060]I don't hold that as any secret to anybody.
- [00:05:52.890]I'm very proud of that.
- [00:05:54.870]We, we have today about 25% of our students
- [00:05:58.320]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln are the first
- [00:06:00.600]in their families to attend a four year university.
- [00:06:04.320]And we're very proud of that as well.
- [00:06:06.630]That number's actually been growing a little bit
- [00:06:08.610]in the last few years and, you know, these
- [00:06:12.060]these students are coming to us
- [00:06:14.400]for a transformation in their lives, really
- [00:06:17.070]that the power, that higher education has to
- [00:06:19.500]transform their lives moving forward.
- [00:06:21.600]This was first gen college education week this past week.
- [00:06:25.950]We celebrated that with a lot
- [00:06:27.420]of our students and the great things that they're doing
- [00:06:30.660]at the University of Nebraska London.
- [00:06:32.400]So that access word is all about who we are.
- [00:06:36.090]Fantastic. We got one more home game left.
- [00:06:38.700]How about that?
- [00:06:39.533]We do well.
- [00:06:40.366]The Badgers are coming to town here in about a week.
- [00:06:43.080]Looking forward to that, looking forward to hosting them.
- [00:06:46.800]You know, it's a, it's always better to play Wisconsin
- [00:06:50.010]in Lincoln than it is to go to Madison.
- [00:06:52.050]There's no doubt about that.
- [00:06:53.610]We're looking forward to that game
- [00:06:55.530]and then a big cap off in, in Thanksgiving week with going
- [00:06:59.070]over to that, that place East Bet most of us as well.
- [00:07:02.040]Thanks for dropping by today.
- [00:07:03.000]Have a great time.
- [00:07:03.833]You bet. Looking forward to it. Go Big Red
- [00:07:05.400]Ryan Green with us here on our countdown to kickoff show.
