[00:00:09.780]an 11:00 AM kickoff game and chancellor
[00:00:11.083]this is one of my favorite days of the year.
[00:00:13.590]It's military appreciation day.
[00:00:15.186]Love the pageantry of the pre-game ceremonies
[00:00:18.960]that we'll see here in, in about an hour.
[00:00:20.820]But this will be a fun time today.

[00:00:23.333]And it's great to be back in Memorial Stadium
[00:00:24.833]for a morning game here in the fall.
[00:00:27.298]It's a great, great opportunity for that.

[00:00:32.263]Memorial Stadium happly named Memorial Stadium
[00:00:35.156]built nearly a hundred years ago
[00:00:37.182]in honor a World War I veterans.
[00:00:39.900]So we actually celebrated
[00:00:41.040]that hundred year anniversary here a few years ago
[00:00:43.950]of the end of World War I.
[00:00:45.354]It's always special to watch hustlers play here and
[00:00:49.530]and looking forward to a great game today against Minnesota.
[00:00:52.800]Well, you had a groundbreaking ceremony this week
[00:00:54.840]on a new facility that's going to enhance teaching,
[00:00:57.097]research, and extension.
[00:00:59.100]What's gonna be the focus of this new facility?
[00:01:01.391]Well, we did it, Greg.
[00:01:02.730]We got a huge amount of building
[00:01:04.200]going on across our campuses.
[00:01:05.580]We've talked a little bit
[00:01:06.413]about that on previous, previous weeks and programs.
[00:01:09.302]And on Friday, just yesterday
[00:01:11.870]we had the opportunity to break ground
[00:01:14.784]on a new feed lot research and innovation center at our
[00:01:18.810]our Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center
[00:01:21.390]at Mead here, just north of Lincoln, about 30 or 40 minutes.
[00:01:25.671]And it's, it will add
[00:01:28.080]to what is already a world leading program in this area.
[00:01:31.230]The University of Nebraska
[00:01:32.550]for many years has been recognized
[00:01:34.283]as the world leader in ruminant nutrition,
[00:01:37.260]nutrition of cattle, in the feed lot industry in particular.
[00:01:41.160]As you know, the feedlot industry
[00:01:42.600]is heavily concentrated in Nebraska.
[00:01:44.460]The beef industry, largest state
[00:01:46.650]for the beef industry and the red meat industry is Nebraska.
[00:01:50.100]And this new center presents an incredible opportunity
[00:01:53.910]for our researchers
[00:01:54.757]and the Institute of Ag. and Natural Resources
[00:01:56.795]to bring together industry partners,
[00:01:59.100]cattle producers, and UNL researchers
[00:02:01.680]and students to advance sustainable beef production
[00:02:04.380]through the beef feed lot industry.
[00:02:06.834]New world, real, real world class facilities
[00:02:11.418]with testing the newest in precision technology,
[00:02:14.710]solving environmental challenges facing
[00:02:17.010]the feeding industry, and of course
[00:02:19.050]improving cattle performance and welfare
[00:02:21.164]in the feed lot sector.
[00:02:23.138]It is a key component
[00:02:25.453]of the university's new beef innovation hub
[00:02:28.463]that is part of our Institute of Ag. and Natural Resources
[00:02:31.800]and has been supported in major ways philanthropically
[00:02:35.610]to help us move forward.
[00:02:36.990]The building of this new facility
[00:02:38.880]with support from Greater Omaha Packing Company
[00:02:41.280]the fifth largest beef packer
[00:02:43.824]in the country pledged a significant gift to this.
[00:02:47.230]As well as in support from JBS,
[00:02:51.281]one of the major packers here, and the Closterman Family.
[00:02:54.990]Longtime family in the feeding industry
[00:02:57.687]and Farm Credit Services of America.
[00:03:00.390]So just a, a range of philanthropic support
[00:03:03.239]and private giving that is helping us
[00:03:05.430]to build this world class facility
[00:03:07.230]for our beef firm and nutrition group.
[00:03:09.240]Visiting again with the chancellor
[00:03:10.590]of the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
[00:03:11.730]Ronnie Green, we talked about military appreciation day
[00:03:14.520]today at the game.
[00:03:15.660]Next Friday is actually Veterans Day
[00:03:17.670]and I know UNL has a special scholarship program
[00:03:20.730]for families that are affiliated with the military and, and
[00:03:23.790]and even living outside of Nebraska.
[00:03:25.440]What are the details of this new scholarship?
[00:03:27.338]Well, you know, Greg, we
[00:03:28.867]we are also one of the leading universities
[00:03:33.210]in the country for support of military
[00:03:35.256]and military dependent students and their families.
[00:03:38.238]Just recently,
[00:03:39.423]Military Times Best for Vets Colleges rankings came out
[00:03:44.929]and the University of Nebraska Lincoln
[00:03:46.675]was ranked number 29 overall in the country
[00:03:49.845]amongst the very top in the Big 10.
[00:03:52.350]Number two in the Big 10.
[00:03:54.014]It's the sixth year in a row
[00:03:55.590]that the university's been featured in that list.
[00:03:57.960]And we've been moving up actually in the
[00:03:59.703]the rankings largely due
[00:04:02.400]to our military and veteran success center
[00:04:05.130]that supports our our veteran students
[00:04:07.835]and military family dependents here on campus.
[00:04:11.370]Some 1,600 students on our campus fall
[00:04:15.240]into that military or military dependent designation.
[00:04:19.746]We have just started for this coming year
[00:04:23.940]a new undergraduate scholarship program
[00:04:26.119]the Husker Salute Pledge that's furthering our support
[00:04:30.120]and commitment to the military community
[00:04:32.190]by waiving the non-resident portion
[00:04:34.140]of tuition for qualifying out-of-state students coming
[00:04:37.860]to us who are veterans, or who are active duty,
[00:04:40.680]or in the guard, or the reserve, as well
[00:04:43.560]as their spouses and and dependent students to qualify
[00:04:47.183]for in-state tuition to come to study here
[00:04:50.700]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
[00:04:52.488]So we're very pleased about that and we want to, of course
[00:04:57.133]with Veterans Day coming up the end of this week to
[00:05:00.353]thank our veterans and folks currently serving our nation
[00:05:03.990]right now,
[00:05:04.823]to salute their service, as well here,
[00:05:08.551]in this Veteran's Week kind of game.
