- [00:00:03.473]This week we're celebrating first-gen students
- [00:00:05.910]across the country and I'm really proud to celebrate myself
- [00:00:08.910]because I'm a proud first-gen college graduate.
- [00:00:12.300]What's it like to be a first-gen student?
- [00:00:15.480]For me, it means coming to a new environment
- [00:00:18.390]that you know you're not previously used to.
- [00:00:21.300]I think that a lot of students deem first-generation
- [00:00:26.850]as almost a negative thing
- [00:00:29.400]but for me it seems almost endearing to know
- [00:00:31.950]that when I graduate I did all that work you know,
- [00:00:34.770]coming into a completely new environment.
- [00:00:37.140]To me, I think it's accomplishing all the goals
- [00:00:39.240]that my family and I had coming to the United States
- [00:00:42.150]and being able to pursue them
- [00:00:43.620]and one day be able to make a career
- [00:00:45.660]out of myself that they once weren't able to do.
- [00:00:48.319]What kind of words of advice would you give
- [00:00:50.790]to future first-generation students?
- [00:00:54.060]One of the biggest things I think is finding a mentor,
- [00:00:56.580]finding someone that you're comfortable going to
- [00:00:58.710]if you ever need help, or just simple advice.
- [00:01:01.200]Find an environment where you feel comfortable,
- [00:01:03.510]whether that's a club or an organization that you can join
- [00:01:07.500]or even just getting a job on campus.
- [00:01:10.200]It's really important to find a group
- [00:01:12.780]of people that can support you and where you feel safe.
- [00:01:16.500]So community, finding community
- [00:01:18.330]Absolutely. is a big part of it.
- [00:01:19.227]And you know First Huskers,
- [00:01:21.563]you both were probably involved in the First Husker Program.
- [00:01:25.110]Talk a little bit about how
- [00:01:26.010]that's helped shape your experience here at Nebraska.
- [00:01:29.310]First Husker for me,
- [00:01:30.630]really set up the groundwork for my four years here.
- [00:01:35.040]Coming in, I was nervous
- [00:01:36.720]as most first-generation students are
- [00:01:39.240]and it really gave me a sense of not only confidence
- [00:01:43.290]but a sort of belonging as well.
- [00:01:46.050]It made me a part of this university
- [00:01:47.940]as well as finding people who can support me.
- [00:01:51.030]Great.
- [00:01:51.863]Yeah just like Shaw said, belonging,
- [00:01:53.280]that was one of the biggest things
- [00:01:54.330]because I remember just like the four day event,
- [00:01:56.580]coming in like I finally felt like I was part
- [00:01:59.190]of something big and knew
- [00:02:00.840]that I had all those people around me
- [00:02:02.670]that I could go to if I ever needed anything.
- [00:02:05.070]Proud of what you guys are doing
- [00:02:06.420]as first-gen college students
- [00:02:08.070]and from one first-gen to another, go Big Red.
- [00:02:11.151]Go Big Red.
- [00:02:11.984]Go Big Red.
