- [00:00:00.270]We're back on Countdown to Kickoff,
- [00:00:01.620]Huskers in the fighting line IA236 kickoff today
- [00:00:04.980]for the Big Red back at home.
- [00:00:06.300]It's been a while since we've played here
- [00:00:07.950]at Memorial Stadium, but as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:10.260]a chance to catch up with the chancellor
- [00:00:11.730]from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:13.647]Great to be back in Memorial Stadium.
- [00:00:16.260]Both these schools today,
- [00:00:17.490]both these teams coming off of a biweek.
- [00:00:19.290]I know we certainly needed to biweek,
- [00:00:21.180]we needed to get some guys healthy.
- [00:00:22.770]Oh, it came at a good time, right?
- [00:00:25.725]Our team has played hard all year long
- [00:00:28.380]and starting with that really early game in Ireland
- [00:00:31.440]and not really having a lot of time to recover from that.
- [00:00:35.266]So even though it's a kind of rare second biweek,
- [00:00:38.400]at this point of the season, it was highly welcome.
- [00:00:41.340]I think we may have needed it
- [00:00:42.360]a little more than Illinois did,
- [00:00:44.868]but we'll hopefully see some benefit from that.
- [00:00:47.178]You know, Mickey and his team have five big conference games
- [00:00:50.648]ahead of them after today's game with Illinois.
- [00:00:54.030]Illinois coming in certainly playing well
- [00:00:56.310]better than they have in a long time,
- [00:00:58.566]leading the West as we know currently.
- [00:01:02.160]But it's all up for grabs, so to speak.
- [00:01:05.872]So hoping for a great home game today here in Lincoln
- [00:01:10.383]and looking forward hopefully to a good win.
- [00:01:12.990]No doubt.
- [00:01:13.823]Let's jump into something that's going on on campus.
- [00:01:15.570]I know the Carson Foundation's a big part of the university
- [00:01:18.090]and you've got some exciting announcement
- [00:01:19.500]about some funding coming that way.
- [00:01:21.540]Well, you know, Johnny Carson, Nebraska native,
- [00:01:23.707]Norfolk Nebraska native,
- [00:01:25.083]graduate of the University of Nebraska Lincoln in journalism
- [00:01:28.850]has done a lot of support for the University of Nebraska
- [00:01:33.840]over the years, including our School of Film and Theater
- [00:01:37.830]named for Johnny Carson, the lead center.
- [00:01:42.060]They've been a supporter of the lead center
- [00:01:43.920]when it was originally built 30 years ago.
- [00:01:47.550]And more recently, the formation of the Johnny Carson Center
- [00:01:51.180]for Emerging Media Arts,
- [00:01:52.770]new program that we now have our first group of students
- [00:01:55.680]graduating from that program currently,
- [00:01:59.344]and they made a major gift to establish that program
- [00:02:03.390]here a few years ago
- [00:02:05.070]and more recently have continued to increase
- [00:02:08.820]their level of support,
- [00:02:10.710]including $5 million in new scholarship support
- [00:02:13.560]for students in the Carson Center,
- [00:02:15.960]as well as a named endowed professorship
- [00:02:19.020]that is the director of the center
- [00:02:20.910]are currently held by Meagan Elliot,
- [00:02:23.370]the director for the Center for Emerging Media Arts.
- [00:02:26.142]And they're in town today.
- [00:02:28.465]So the Carson Foundation Board, all of them being colleagues
- [00:02:33.240]who worked with Johnny during his career,
- [00:02:35.550]and they've continued his impact through the activities
- [00:02:40.110]and the support of the Carson Center
- [00:02:43.020]or the Carson Foundation and things like our Carson Center.
- [00:02:45.900]So really pleased to have them here today
- [00:02:48.690]and to celebrate the support
- [00:02:50.670]that the Johnny Carson Foundation
- [00:02:52.290]has given to the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:02:54.540]Well, that's fantastic.
- [00:02:55.650]Good to have you back in Lincoln.
- [00:02:56.820]You did some traveling this week,
- [00:02:58.020]had some meetings at the the NCAA
- [00:02:59.610]Division one Presidential Forum.
- [00:03:02.610]What is that body for our folks out there
- [00:03:04.620]and what role do you represent Nebraska for?
- [00:03:07.260]Well, I was in Indianapolis this week,
- [00:03:10.200]earlier in the week for the Presidential Forum meetings.
- [00:03:13.765]Presidential Forum is the body in division one of NCAA,
- [00:03:19.136]It's an advisory group of presidents and chancellors
- [00:03:22.724]to the Division one board.
- [00:03:26.369]And it is set up where each of the 32 conferences
- [00:03:30.732]that make up division one have a representative president
- [00:03:35.760]or chancellor on that presidential forum.
- [00:03:38.100]So I've been the Big 10 rep to that presidential forum,
- [00:03:42.810]I think I'm in my third year,
- [00:03:44.280]this is the last year I'm serving on that forum.
- [00:03:47.649]And we were grappling with all of the issues of the day.
- [00:03:51.360]We were grappling with NIL and regulation of NIL,
- [00:03:55.350]we're grappling with the transformation committee work
- [00:03:58.068]that is undergoing a transformation
- [00:04:00.210]of Division one currently in NCAA
- [00:04:05.640]as well as a lot of other issues, you know,
- [00:04:07.710]that are coming down the pike in collegiate athletics.
- [00:04:10.830]So, good meetings, I was pleased to be able to be there
- [00:04:14.940]and, you know, I shared recently
- [00:04:18.120]that I've been on the Big 10 Board now for seven years
- [00:04:22.313]as the UNL leader on that board.
- [00:04:25.317]And it dawned on me,
- [00:04:28.080]I mentioned this here just a few weeks ago
- [00:04:30.660]at the state of the university address that Mitch Daniels,
- [00:04:33.990]who we were with just a couple of weeks ago
- [00:04:35.700]at the Purdue game when he retires here in December
- [00:04:39.960]from his service as president of Purdue University.
- [00:04:42.810]I'll be the longest serving member on the Big 10 Board
- [00:04:45.930]come January one and I'm in my seventh year.
- [00:04:49.710]So it tells you a little bit about, you know,
- [00:04:52.185]the amount of change in leadership
- [00:04:55.050]that the Big 10 has really had
- [00:04:57.180]over this last number of years.
- [00:04:58.920]So good meetings in NCAA,
- [00:05:01.260]and very pleased to be able to represent the Big 10
- [00:05:04.590]on the Presidential Forum.
- [00:05:05.760]Well, it's a great honor for you to be able to do that.
- [00:05:07.620]Did they have a special chair for the longest 10?
- [00:05:09.510]Do you have to sit like at the head of the table
- [00:05:11.719]in this meeting?
- [00:05:12.552]I don't, yeah.
- [00:05:13.385]Yeah, I don't know.
- [00:05:14.283]It's the hot chair, I guess.
- [00:05:16.087]Hot chair.
- [00:05:16.920]No.
- [00:05:21.600]Well, actually, now that I think about it,
- [00:05:24.240]Robert Jones at the University of Illinois,
- [00:05:26.430]my counterpart Chancellor today
- [00:05:28.515]at the University of Illinois.
- [00:05:30.540]He came on about four months after I did.
- [00:05:33.330]So we're the two old hats now, if you will,
- [00:05:37.410]on the Big 10 Board.
- [00:05:38.490]Oh, that's great.
- [00:05:39.323]Always good to catch up with you.
- [00:05:40.290]Enjoy the game today.
- [00:05:41.520]Yeah, go Big Red.
- [00:05:42.480]Ronnie Green with us here on Countdown to kickoff.
- [00:05:44.280]Matt Coney will be back,
- [00:05:45.240]we'll have our Big 10 blitz, coming up next.
