- [00:00:00.120]We're back on pre-game now.
- [00:00:01.230]Top-five matchup tonight,
- [00:00:02.310]the Huskers and the Wisconsin Badgers.
- [00:00:04.110]Greg Sharpe delighted to be joined by the chancellor
- [00:00:06.170]of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.460]Boy, it's a big matchup tonight.
- [00:00:09.990]John Cook's going back
- [00:00:10.950]to where his head coaching career started.
- [00:00:13.020]And these are always fun matches when we play these Badgers.
- [00:00:16.200]Well, it sure is.
- [00:00:17.070]And it's, you know, they've kinda had our number
- [00:00:18.960]here the last few years, so big match tonight
- [00:00:21.510]with our number one ranked volleyball team
- [00:00:24.630]against the number five ranked Badgers in Madison.
- [00:00:28.110]Big match for the year.
- [00:00:29.280]People have been looking forward to it all year
- [00:00:31.350]and, you know, you have to just be so impressed
- [00:00:35.640]with the way that the volleyball team is playing.
- [00:00:37.830]Six straight sweeps after that match
- [00:00:40.050]with Illinois the other night.
- [00:00:42.330]Just playing at very top level.
- [00:00:44.820]You know, we got a lot of season left to go
- [00:00:46.770]and it's gonna be really, really exciting
- [00:00:48.660]to see them play Wisconsin tonight.
- [00:00:50.640]Well, Chancellor, the university
- [00:00:52.470]has made an experiential learning of focus
- [00:00:54.900]for their student athletes, just like the volleyball team.
- [00:00:56.730]They're on the road tonight.
- [00:00:57.690]Sometimes getting off of campus can really lead
- [00:01:00.060]to a meaningful learning opportunity.
- [00:01:03.090]What is some of the ways that Husker students
- [00:01:05.220]are are doing some of that off campus?
- [00:01:07.740]Well, Greg, you know, students are, at Nebraska,
- [00:01:10.440]aren't just learning in the classroom.
- [00:01:12.120]So we really have as an emphasis
- [00:01:15.270]and a goal in our current strategic plan
- [00:01:18.510]that all of our students also are gaining
- [00:01:21.090]a tremendous amount of experiential learning.
- [00:01:23.910]I think we're prioritizing that
- [00:01:26.910]in our educational process here.
- [00:01:29.760]It's one of our strongest aims of our plan.
- [00:01:33.000]That's aim one of the N2025 Plan,
- [00:01:35.760]that all of the students that graduate in the class of 2025
- [00:01:39.630]will graduate with an experiential learning opportunity
- [00:01:43.470]as part of their portfolio.
- [00:01:44.910]So we're doing that on our campus and around our campus
- [00:01:48.180]and out in the state and outside the state every day.
- [00:01:52.710]One of the special places that we just brought online here
- [00:01:56.820]with a, about a week ago,
- [00:01:58.470]we had the ribbon cutting for this.
- [00:02:00.630]It's a new experiential learning opportunity space
- [00:02:04.650]south of Lincoln.
- [00:02:06.150]It's called the Reller Prairie Field Station
- [00:02:08.550]down near Martell just off of Highway 77 to the west,
- [00:02:13.290]near the small town of of Martell.
- [00:02:15.540]And it's actually got quite a story of its own.
- [00:02:19.020]It's been in the university's hands since the late 1960s.
- [00:02:22.830]It was used by our School of Biological Sciences
- [00:02:25.440]during the '70s and the '80s
- [00:02:27.480]for control burn experimentation work
- [00:02:30.300]for management of range land.
- [00:02:34.050]But it kind of went into inventory and wasn't being used
- [00:02:38.940]for over really the last couple of decades.
- [00:02:43.020]The land actually has quite a story behind it.
- [00:02:46.110]It actually was part of the original land grants
- [00:02:49.080]that went to form the land grant university schools.
- [00:02:52.290]In this case, Brown University in Rhode Island
- [00:02:55.200]received that particular plot of land
- [00:02:57.930]to help finance that founding of Brown
- [00:03:01.500]as a land grant institution.
- [00:03:03.870]Came to the university in 1969
- [00:03:06.480]after a family who had farmed it for several decades,
- [00:03:10.110]donated it to the university and deeded it over to UNL.
- [00:03:13.730]Our Department of Global Integrative Studies
- [00:03:16.500]and our School of Biological Sciences
- [00:03:19.710]really went to work on that property.
- [00:03:22.530]A bunch of it during the pandemic.
- [00:03:25.290]They did the work themselves to rehabilitate
- [00:03:28.860]and to clear the property,
- [00:03:30.630]to redevelop the building that is there
- [00:03:34.350]for use as a field study building.
- [00:03:36.930]And we had a great ribbon cutting for that
- [00:03:39.420]just this last week to celebrate
- [00:03:42.840]how that's going to be a part
- [00:03:44.430]of really a field learning laboratory
- [00:03:46.680]for our students moving forward.
- [00:03:48.600]So another example of how our students
- [00:03:52.020]are able to gain experiential learning
- [00:03:54.390]really around the clock
- [00:03:55.860]here at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:03:57.690]That's fantastic.
- [00:03:58.523]Great history lesson too on that plot of land.
- [00:04:00.930]Enjoy the match tonight.
- [00:04:01.860]We'll talk again before the football game on Saturday.
- [00:04:04.080]Go Big Red!
- [00:04:04.920]Ronnie Green with us.
- [00:04:05.790]John Mader's back with more pregame coming up next.
