- [00:00:05.490]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin
- [00:00:07.020]and this is the Art TEAMS podcast from Tech Edge.
- [00:00:10.020]And today I'd like to introduce you
- [00:00:12.180]to the Art TEAMS project.
- [00:00:13.770]This is a new project that got funded
- [00:00:15.720]by the US Department of Education
- [00:00:17.670]and we are truly excited to share that with you
- [00:00:21.690]and to really grow with it.
- [00:00:23.490]This is a five year project
- [00:00:25.110]so we've got some time together.
- [00:00:27.300]At the heart of this project
- [00:00:28.740]is something that Jose Lucero calls,
- [00:00:32.280]school as a malleable material.
- [00:00:34.530]In art, we often think about the materials we work with
- [00:00:38.130]and how malleable they are.
- [00:00:39.630]If you think about marble
- [00:00:40.980]and somebody who's trying to sculpt it,
- [00:00:43.470]they have to know what they can and what they can't do.
- [00:00:46.410]What is the point where everything breaks down
- [00:00:48.450]and where are the ways you can shape it?
- [00:00:51.240]In the same way, we can start thinking about schools
- [00:00:54.840]as we shape them for the 21st century and beyond.
- [00:00:58.230]Where are the places?
- [00:00:59.760]Where are the times?
- [00:01:01.200]What are the opportunities to shape the school,
- [00:01:04.230]to shape the experience for our students?
- [00:01:06.630]And that's at heart of what we're doing
- [00:01:08.820]and what we're exploring
- [00:01:10.200]because in this project we don't really come
- [00:01:12.930]with all of the answers.
- [00:01:14.310]We come with a lot of questions
- [00:01:16.470]like, what are those opportunities
- [00:01:18.360]to make change in schools?
- [00:01:20.220]Of course, art is at the center of what we're doing.
- [00:01:24.000]I'd like to introduce you to our team.
- [00:01:26.220]At the heart of our team are four people,
- [00:01:28.980]myself, Lorinda Rice, who is a curriculum specialist,
- [00:01:32.790]the art curriculum specialist for Lincoln Public Schools.
- [00:01:35.430]She's also an artist.
- [00:01:37.500]And she is one of the people that helped us
- [00:01:41.970]start this vision
- [00:01:43.620]and collect the teachers that have joined us.
- [00:01:46.980]The second person is Kimberly D'Adamo.
- [00:01:49.200]Kimberly D'Adamo is an art teacher, a visual artist
- [00:01:53.670]and now a teacher educator here at UNL.
- [00:01:56.910]And she's the one who crafted the curriculum
- [00:01:59.280]for this program
- [00:02:00.390]and keeps working with us on asking the questions
- [00:02:03.150]and finding new and interesting answers.
- [00:02:05.970]HyeonJin Yoon is our research scientist.
- [00:02:10.050]She's a research professor here at UNL
- [00:02:12.870]and she helps us ask the question.
- [00:02:15.270]She keeps us on track
- [00:02:16.770]and she helps us find ways
- [00:02:19.380]to communicate our results to the world
- [00:02:21.690]through presentations,
- [00:02:23.310]through publications and other things.
- [00:02:26.430]So she's a critical member of our team.
- [00:02:29.100]We've got a group of research assistants
- [00:02:31.230]I'll introduce you to them in subsequent shows
- [00:02:34.350]but they are each bringing their own expertise in the world.
- [00:02:39.120]From the world of writing, psychology, movement,
- [00:02:42.780]they each bring something into this team.
- [00:02:46.800]Beyond that, this summer, we collected with us teachers.
- [00:02:51.840]Those teachers are in pairs, hence our Art TEAMS.
- [00:02:55.950]They pair up from the same school.
- [00:02:58.620]One teacher is an art teacher,
- [00:03:00.300]the second teacher is actually a classroom teacher
- [00:03:03.870]or somebody who teaches something else.
- [00:03:05.640]We've got special education teachers.
- [00:03:07.440]We've got just elementary teachers
- [00:03:09.660]who teach everything in their classroom
- [00:03:11.100]besides their specials.
- [00:03:12.720]Different art teachers with different levels of expertise
- [00:03:17.700]and different materials they work with on a regular basis.
- [00:03:22.620]And then we've got on top of that,
- [00:03:25.290]teaching artists who are all local artists, dancers,
- [00:03:29.730]writers, visual artists.
- [00:03:32.190]They come together with us.
- [00:03:34.170]And museum educators from museums all over Nebraska.
- [00:03:38.700]And so we brought everybody together
- [00:03:40.830]to start answering that question of
- [00:03:43.980]how do we help kids do education,
- [00:03:46.830]learn in a different way,
- [00:03:48.570]as we are focusing on
- [00:03:51.150]three critical principles?
- [00:03:54.240]And one is, how do we align contemporary
- [00:03:57.390]and emerging media arts pedagogy
- [00:04:00.180]across multiple disciplines?
- [00:04:02.790]So how do we bring the learning
- [00:04:05.880]and help kids learn how to organize their learning?
- [00:04:08.760]We think, and I've talked about this actually before,
- [00:04:11.820]that kids today have exposure
- [00:04:13.920]to tremendous amount of knowledge and information.
- [00:04:16.800]And the real challenge of modern learning
- [00:04:20.040]is not getting to the information.
- [00:04:21.660]The information is out there,
- [00:04:23.070]on the web, in different digital resources.
- [00:04:26.010]The key is how do I organize it,
- [00:04:28.710]how do I evaluate it,
- [00:04:30.180]how do I ask the right questions?
- [00:04:32.040]And this is what Art TEAMS aims to do.
- [00:04:34.560]The second thing is we are scaffolding inquiry skills,
- [00:04:38.970]making sure that kids can ask the question
- [00:04:42.480]that they want to ask.
- [00:04:43.950]So this is about choice and autonomy
- [00:04:46.110]as a way to motivate and engage learners
- [00:04:49.470]which is a key in this world that is full of distractions,
- [00:04:54.270]fulls of things that you may want to follow.
- [00:04:58.830]The last thing is, and this is critical as well,
- [00:05:01.920]building a culturally responsive curriculum
- [00:05:05.370]that is for everybody
- [00:05:08.220]and everybody can find themselves in that curriculum
- [00:05:12.810]while they are looking at the wider world.
- [00:05:15.690]So this is, in a nutshell, where Art TEAMS is going.
- [00:05:20.190]And these are the questions that we ask as we are thinking.
- [00:05:24.270]But again, I go back to this very, very basic idea.
- [00:05:28.320]School as a malleable material.
- [00:05:30.900]How do we shape it?
- [00:05:32.640]What are the opportunities?
- [00:05:34.350]What are the times?
- [00:05:35.880]What are the materials that we use to help kids
- [00:05:39.600]create their own learning?
- [00:05:41.640]And finally, we have started.
- [00:05:44.190]So we've got our first group of teachers.
- [00:05:45.750]If you want to learn more about them
- [00:05:47.700]or more about our curriculum,
- [00:05:49.770]please visit our website
- [00:05:51.900]and all the information
- [00:05:54.000]and newer information as we grow and we share more,
- [00:05:57.660]will be there.
- [00:05:59.370]I will see you next time on Art TEAMS podcast.
