- [00:00:00.360]For more than 25 years the Nebraska Rural Poll has offered a platform for
- [00:00:04.770]residents to weigh in on important issues facing the state. The latest results
- [00:00:09.750]show a lack of optimism over the economy with respondents fearing inflation will
- [00:00:15.000]worsen over the next year. L.J McElravy with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:20.310]joins us now for more on this. L.J., good morning, and thanks for being here. So
- [00:00:24.690]talk about the goal of this year's rural poll.
- [00:00:29.400]Thank you. Yeah. So the goal as it is every year with Nebraska Rural poll is to
- [00:00:34.680]aggregate the voice of rural Nebraska. And so this year, we surveyed 60, about
- [00:00:39.894]6100 households, rural households across the state. And we had about 1100
- [00:00:44.778]respondents who who've responded to the poll this year. And we include a number
- [00:00:50.058]of core topics every year so that we can track trends. And then this year,
- [00:00:55.008]specifically, we focused on the economy and employment within the state.
- [00:00:59.760]So I'm sure not surprised when we look at the economy that there is a lack of
- [00:01:04.964]optimism. And I'm sure that's not just Nebraska that's country-wide. So talk
- [00:01:10.102]about those findings and how Nebraskans feel about the economy and inflation.
- [00:01:16.890]Yeah, like you said, it wasn't surprising. The rural Nebraskans were not
- [00:01:21.176]optimistic about about their economic situation. And so we had about 87% of the
- [00:01:25.873]respondents who indicated that they thought inflation was going to get worse
- [00:01:30.394]over the next 12 months. They also indicated that they thought the cost of gas
- [00:01:35.033]and groceries as well as healthcare and other goods and services would increase
- [00:01:39.730]over the next 12 months. I think one of the important findings for this when we
- [00:01:44.428]asked about whether or not people thought their personal economic situation
- [00:01:48.890]would be worse, 43% of our respondents said it would. And that differentiated
- [00:01:53.470]across income brackets. So for households with under $40,000 worth of income
- [00:01:57.991]annually, they responded at a rate of six in 10 Nebraskans really indicating how
- [00:02:02.747]that is different for different households, and how you know, the cost of
- [00:02:07.092]staples like gas and groceries really impact those households with lower income.
- [00:02:11.790]Absolutely. You know, when you collect all this data, how do you guys use this?
- [00:02:15.369]I mean, what do you do with this data?
- [00:02:18.870]Yeah, so we really look at trying to make sure that we've got the poll findings
- [00:02:23.905]in front of as many stakeholders and and decision makers. This is really good
- [00:02:28.814]data to help make tough decisions when it comes to state and local issues in
- [00:02:33.661]Nebraska. So we we supply the data to our legislators across the state and with
- [00:02:38.696]our congressional staff teams. And then we also work to do presentations
- [00:02:43.291]locally. We work with a lot of our local stakeholders, as they're writing grants
- [00:02:48.389]and helping prioritize the needs in their own communities. And we work with
- [00:02:53.172]other academics who are interested in kind of doing research on specific topics,
- [00:02:58.271]especially around rural rural issues.
- [00:03:00.600]Great stuff, and I'm sure just so great to have this data to make these changes.
- [00:03:04.827]L.J. thank you so much for joining us. That's L.J. McElravy with University of
- [00:03:08.950]Nebraska-Lincoln. Again, appreciate your time this morning.
