- [00:00:00.210]A chance for us to sit down,
- [00:00:01.620]as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:02.820]with the Chancellor of the University
- [00:00:03.990]of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:05.730]I saw you tweet out that you had
- [00:00:06.780]a nice breakfast today.
- [00:00:07.860]Guess your counterpart here at Purdue invited you
- [00:00:10.260]for breakfast?
- [00:00:11.220]Yeah, I've got a chance to get over
- [00:00:12.300]and meet with Mitch Daniels this morning,
- [00:00:14.160]and have breakfast with him,
- [00:00:15.330]and share opportunities and challenges.
- [00:00:18.630]You know, he is retiring at the end
- [00:00:21.180]of December this year.
- [00:00:22.470]He's been the president here at Purdue
- [00:00:24.090]for the last 10 years,
- [00:00:25.110]Great colleague in the Big 10,
- [00:00:27.441]and great leader in higher ed.
- [00:00:29.624]And so he's, he was reflecting a lot on
- [00:00:31.882]what's been happening here.
- [00:00:33.300]He's really good to see him.
- [00:00:34.531]You said they're growing quite a bit.
- [00:00:36.690]They are.
- [00:00:37.650]Purdue's experienced a lot of growth over, certainly
- [00:00:40.470]over Mitch's tenure as president
- [00:00:43.110]and they've, they're certainly a well known school
- [00:00:46.230]in the engineering field.
- [00:00:47.460]And a very high percentage of their students here
- [00:00:50.700]at Purdue, are in the STEM based fields,
- [00:00:52.650]and particularly in engineering,
- [00:00:54.030]and continue to do great things at this
- [00:00:56.880]at, the university here at Purdue.
- [00:00:58.345]Well, hey, talking about great things.
- [00:01:00.540]How about this football program?
- [00:01:01.710]We've got a couple of straight wins
- [00:01:03.120]night games, maybe kind of our,
- [00:01:04.500]our go to thing here.
- [00:01:05.623]Yeah, it's kind of three straight, you know
- [00:01:09.090]so we'll see how that,
- [00:01:10.800]how that that goes, you know, little cooler here tonight.
- [00:01:13.860]Yeah.
- [00:01:14.714]Than what we've experienced so far in the season.
- [00:01:16.170]Love the energy and the intensity
- [00:01:17.790]that the team has been playing with.
- [00:01:19.551]Like Mickey has said, you know, "No substitution
- [00:01:22.500]for toughness." and the team's been playing with a lot
- [00:01:24.750]of toughness, particularly in the second half of the game.
- [00:01:27.360]Like we've seen the third and fourth quarters.
- [00:01:29.610]Two consecutive shutouts the last two weeks, you
- [00:01:32.589]you know, that's great to see and big test tonight.
- [00:01:36.311]Purdue's coming in here
- [00:01:37.770]with a three game winning streak,
- [00:01:40.020]last two being big wins for them against Big 10 opponents.
- [00:01:43.470]So it should be really, really exciting game
- [00:01:45.420]on the field tonight, and looking forward to a great game.
- [00:01:47.220]Absolutely. Well, we've been seeing more
- [00:01:49.290]out of this football team the last couple weeks.
- [00:01:51.240]Nebraska researchers are certainly experts
- [00:01:53.490]at getting more yield out of crops in the field.
- [00:01:56.520]What's the latest news with Nebraska agronomy research?
- [00:01:59.490]Well, certainly Greg was, we talk often,
- [00:02:01.850]the University of Nebraska Lincoln is known internationally
- [00:02:05.640]and around the world for its, its work
- [00:02:07.599]in ag, and natural resources, and water, and food security.
- [00:02:11.190]We're a global leader in increasing agricultural yield
- [00:02:13.980]and crops, in particular, and been helping people
- [00:02:17.010]around the world for a long time in that way.
- [00:02:19.702]It's a challenge that where in many parts
- [00:02:23.970]of the world there is not additional land to put
- [00:02:26.730]into production, and there are, there's issue
- [00:02:29.490]with putting additional land,
- [00:02:30.840]like we've seen in Brazil particularly
- [00:02:33.330]over the last several decades, that pits kind
- [00:02:35.550]of economic growth versus environmental protection.
- [00:02:38.892]And just some work here recently,
- [00:02:41.670]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, led
- [00:02:43.560]by Patricio Grassini in our department of agronomy
- [00:02:46.140]and horticulture, with research partners in Brazil.
- [00:02:50.201]They just released a four year study
- [00:02:52.890]that identifies a path forward for Brazil,
- [00:02:55.560]in particular, to strengthen its ag sector
- [00:02:57.720]while safeguarding their global resources there as well,
- [00:03:02.199]by the use of what's called the global yield
- [00:03:05.460]gap atlas, that was developed here
- [00:03:07.380]at Nebraska, is now deployed around the world.
- [00:03:10.380]It's the world's leading database
- [00:03:12.240]on high quality agronomic data,
- [00:03:14.160]that tells what the yield should be able
- [00:03:16.410]to be versus what's observed, covering more
- [00:03:19.530]than 15 major food crops across more
- [00:03:21.780]than 75 countries.
- [00:03:23.010]And this particular study has shown
- [00:03:25.440]that Brazil could increase its annual soybean output
- [00:03:28.380]by 36% in the next 10 year period ahead,
- [00:03:33.180]while reducing greenhouse gas emissions,
- [00:03:35.640]with the level of land they already have deployed
- [00:03:38.880]into production.
- [00:03:40.020]So great work having global impact there.
- [00:03:44.460]And then also in agronomy,
- [00:03:46.740]our national leadership is also being shown up, it's known
- [00:03:52.680]as the National Ag Producer's Data Cooperative.
- [00:03:55.200]It's a new effort that is being led
- [00:03:57.750]out of the University of Nebraska
- [00:04:00.420]that is putting together an access data
- [00:04:03.540]for precision agriculture across the ag tech industry.
- [00:04:08.790]It's being led by Jennifer Clarke, and by our scientists,
- [00:04:12.960]and animal science, and agronomy along with, well, along
- [00:04:16.770]with collaborators in Virginia Tech, and Clemson,
- [00:04:19.033]and a number of stakeholders across the industry
- [00:04:22.050]that's going to lead to great things ahead as well.
- [00:04:24.240]So great, great leadership, in the area of ag, and water,
- [00:04:28.830]and food security, by our folks
- [00:04:30.690]at the University of Nebraska line.
- [00:04:32.280]That's very good.
- [00:04:33.113]Nebraska research not only leads the world
- [00:04:35.070]in increasing ag yields,
- [00:04:36.210]but this groundbreaking discovery
- [00:04:38.464]this is big time news for the university.
- [00:04:40.830]It, it absolutely is.
- [00:04:42.420]And I'm a beef guy, you know, we talk about that a lot
- [00:04:48.540]and that a producer's data cooperative.
- [00:04:51.270]I was just talking about actually the Nebraska leadership
- [00:04:54.810]of that, is centered very heavily
- [00:04:56.550]on the beef industry itself,
- [00:04:58.860]and continuing to make big advances in the beef industry
- [00:05:01.920]from the sharing of it, of data and information in that way.
- [00:05:04.920]Very good.
- [00:05:05.753]Well enjoy the game tonight.
- [00:05:07.320]It kind of feels like football does it?
- [00:05:08.550]A little crisp in the end's, okay.
- [00:05:09.671]It does.
- [00:05:10.504]You know, I was talking with Trev a little bit, down
- [00:05:12.120]on the field a few minutes ago, and he said, "You know,
- [00:05:14.280]this is the kind of weather I loved to play in.
- [00:05:16.872]Couldn't be per more perfect weather
- [00:05:18.594]because you can just run, run, run."
- [00:05:20.910]He said so.
- [00:05:21.743]So I hope we'll see that tonight.
- [00:05:23.640]Grass field too.
- [00:05:24.630]It it is.
- [00:05:25.463]You know, I can remember being here in the past.
- [00:05:27.645]I think this is my third go round, at an away game
- [00:05:30.870]at Purdue, and it's not always looking so good.
- [00:05:34.230]The field doesn't always look so wonderful here.
- [00:05:36.660]It's a natural turf field
- [00:05:38.940]but tonight it looks really good.
- [00:05:41.670]So surface is looking great, looking forward to great game.
- [00:05:44.430]They probably haven't played a game
- [00:05:45.660]with rain yet.
- [00:05:46.493]That's sometimes will really chew up that grass.
- [00:05:48.273]That probably is the case,
- [00:05:49.950]but I can remember being here
- [00:05:51.120]in the past, where there was a lot of bear spots
- [00:05:53.580]in that field for sure, so.
- [00:05:54.930]I already see some red out
- [00:05:56.220]in the stands Chancellor,
- [00:05:57.270]and I know there's a big group of boosters
- [00:05:58.830]that are on this trip, and all those great supporters
- [00:06:01.058]of the university.
- [00:06:02.130]Yeah, this is the Suite Trip weekend
- [00:06:03.437]that we call it, where the suite owners
- [00:06:06.180]in Memorial Stadium are all go together,
- [00:06:09.658]to an away game and during the season.
- [00:06:12.540]And this is the sweet trip game this weekend.
- [00:06:15.180]So we've got a lot of folks here
- [00:06:17.460]that are coming up from Indianapolis,
- [00:06:19.050]and where they've been the last day,
- [00:06:21.480]and spec we'll see some Husker fans.
- [00:06:23.789]Good, good outpouring of Husker fans.
- [00:06:25.920]In fact, you're right, I'm looking over
- [00:06:27.270]and all I see is about
- [00:06:28.320]as much red as I see black, so.
- [00:06:29.210]That's great.
- [00:06:30.510]We're gonna give you next week off, little bye week.
- [00:06:31.788]You bet, you bet, well go Big Red.
- [00:06:33.930]Dr. Ronnie in two weeks, right?
- [00:06:35.575]Ronnie the chancellor of the University
- [00:06:36.510]of Nebraska Lincoln with us here
- [00:06:37.890]on countdown to kick off.
