- [00:00:05.972]Hi everyone. My name is Saisha Adhikari.
- [00:00:07.841]I am a junior double
- [00:00:08.742]majoring in biology and psychology with a minor in humanities and medicine.
- [00:00:12.245]I am here to welcome you to the College of Arts and Sciences or CAS.
- [00:00:15.882]So let's take a look. The College of Arts and Sciences is
- [00:00:19.519]truly a community across campus.
- [00:00:21.554]We've got Burnett there.
- [00:00:23.356]We have Hamilton, Avery and Andrews is down there.
- [00:00:26.860]Everything is really close to each other.
- [00:00:29.429]Definitely watch out for the campus squirrels.
- [00:00:31.798]Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
- [00:00:34.634]So before we enter the building, I wanted to let you know that
- [00:00:36.736]I started off neuroscience and pre-med and I'm public health.
- [00:00:40.540]So starting from the transition by, I'm lucky that the college
- [00:00:44.144]has really supported me and given me advisors who've got me along the way.
- [00:00:48.681]A pivotal part, of course, is
- [00:00:50.083]the Advising Center, because it's an integrated system where they're also
- [00:00:53.186]career coaches to help you personally and professionally.
- [00:01:00.560]Hello. Hi. How's it going?
- [00:01:03.163]Good. How are you? Good. Take a seat.
- [00:01:05.999]So what advice do you have for first year College of Arts and Sciences students?
- [00:01:10.303]So first your students come in and see us.
- [00:01:12.906]I think no matter where you're at, what you're hoping to do
- [00:01:15.275]in the future regards to your career, you can always come in and chat
- [00:01:18.211]with us around, you know, how do I get an on campus job?
- [00:01:21.514]How do I find student organizations?
- [00:01:24.350]You know, I know what I'm studying, but I don't know where I'm going to end up.
- [00:01:27.520]All those types of questions are really typical
- [00:01:29.689]kind of early on in your career, at your career development.
- [00:01:33.126]So come in and see us.
- [00:01:34.060]I would say we can get you connected to a Handshake online job platform.
- [00:01:37.464]You connect it to different types of experiences and put on your resume
- [00:01:40.767]for when you're ready
- [00:01:41.434]to seek employment post-graduation, as well as prepare for grad school.
- [00:01:45.338]So come in and see us.
- [00:01:46.673]We're here for you
- [00:01:47.841]throughout your entire duration of your your education at Nebraska. Awesome.
- [00:01:51.744]Thank you. Thank you.
- [00:01:53.279]Each of you already have an advisor assigned to you,
- [00:01:55.882]either in this advising center and farther or they're in your department.
- [00:01:59.752]So mine are in biology and psychology.
- [00:02:01.588]So I'll go to my psych advisor and she'll be like, okay, take this class.
- [00:02:05.859]And yeah, you probably want like a couple minor classes. Like they're super
- [00:02:08.895]understanding that I have two majors and I need to balance both.
- [00:02:13.399]I remember stressing out so
- [00:02:14.634]much because I thought I wouldn't make it to class on time.
- [00:02:17.704]I was given 10 minutes between each class and I'm like, How am I going to do this?
- [00:02:21.508]But this is where my English class was, and my psych class was.
- [00:02:26.412]They're super close.
- [00:02:28.047]I love the second floor because the research center is in it
- [00:02:30.717]and this is where I would spend
- [00:02:32.318]a lot of my time
- [00:02:33.186]because teachers are everywhere and you can do like where you can do
- [00:02:37.090]homework together.
- [00:02:37.957]It's a spot for students to collaborate with each other. And there's.
- [00:02:43.496]I love how close the library is to these buildings
- [00:02:45.665]because during my 30 minute periods I can just study and then go back to class.
- [00:02:51.037]This is Andrews Hall home of English Department.
- [00:02:53.907]As a freshman through the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:02:56.376]You are required to take something in literature.
- [00:02:58.711]English related.
- [00:02:59.746]And I was not excited because it was not science.
- [00:03:02.715]However, I learned so much and a great tool
- [00:03:07.287]that the university has, especially class, is the Writing Center.
- [00:03:11.891]Even though English was not a class in my major, I am so glad I took it.
- [00:03:16.963]You've got to make sure you get these classes outside your major a chance
- [00:03:19.933]because they're here for a purpose and to help you grow in a holistic view.
- [00:03:23.503]Everything is connected.
- [00:03:26.673]It's something that the university really emphasizes.
- [00:03:28.908]Here is research because research is huge.
- [00:03:31.311]Research is the future, and it's really used everywhere in the world.
- [00:03:34.480]So the university really prepares
- [00:03:36.282]you for it by giving you just plenty of opportunities.
- [00:03:39.319]So as a freshman, my job was to do data collection and work
- [00:03:42.622]with all the statistics that we got from the participants.
- [00:03:45.658]And it was super cool, like looking at all
- [00:03:47.193]the correlation and discovering all this information that I honestly like
- [00:03:50.763]didn't even know the terms, but I looked it up and we got through it
- [00:03:54.100]and it was just super cool that I was doing this as a freshman.
- [00:03:57.670]CB3 is the Center for Brain Behavior and Biology.
- [00:04:00.773]It's a brand new building right by the stadium here.
- [00:04:03.476]And since this is a psychology based research, we will have participants
- [00:04:07.747]in here in these different rooms taking tests on a screen.
- [00:04:12.185]Take advantage of your resources because everyone is here to help you
- [00:04:14.921]and guide you and support
- [00:04:15.822]you and make sure that you are best prepared for your career.
- [00:04:20.260]So we're back and also out there now in the summer time for our conference room.
- [00:04:23.630]And this is where Husker Week they will be, which I highly encourage
- [00:04:26.866]you take because you get a deeper look at the university,
- [00:04:29.002]especially college arts and sciences and I might even see you.
- [00:04:33.806]So this is a great area where people can grab snacks, coffee,
- [00:04:37.176]whatever, and also a place for study.
- [00:04:41.681]So let's head to the dean's office on the 12th floor.
- [00:04:50.657]Everyone. This is our new dean, Dr. Button. Hello.
- [00:04:53.760]Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences, as you might have mentioned.
- [00:04:56.929]I just joined the University of Nebraska, and I think you should, too.
- [00:05:00.233]So come on out here and join us on our beautiful campus.
- [00:05:04.070]Hope to see you on campus. Bye.
