- [00:00:01.560]Back on Countdown to Kickoff
- [00:00:03.090]headed for a 6:05 kickoff Central time,
- [00:00:06.000]7:05 here in the east.
- [00:00:07.230]It'll be dark when we kick off here.
- [00:00:09.090]The sun starting to set behind us
- [00:00:11.160]on what has been a beautiful day here in Piscataway.
- [00:00:14.370]And, every week we get a chance to sit down
- [00:00:16.140]with the chancellor
- [00:00:16.973]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:19.260]I don't know a lot about this school.
- [00:00:21.082]This is a land grant school, is it not?
- [00:00:23.850]That's right, Greg.
- [00:00:24.930]The Rutgers is the Land Grant University
- [00:00:27.464]for the state of New Jersey.
- [00:00:29.190]It's pretty old university.
- [00:00:31.320]Yeah, it was in, it was in play a long time
- [00:00:33.270]before the Land Grant Act came along in the mid 1860s.
- [00:00:37.260]But, it is a pretty stout university
- [00:00:40.440]on the Land Grant page and people don't recognize it.
- [00:00:44.130]But you know, New Jersey actually has quite a bit
- [00:00:46.064]of agriculture in it, believe it or not.
- [00:00:47.632]Really?
- [00:00:48.510]A lot of orchards here
- [00:00:49.860]and a lot of, it's called the Garden State for that reason.
- [00:00:53.160]And so, yeah, it's good to be at Rutgers.
- [00:00:55.559]They claim to be the home of college football
- [00:00:57.930]here at Piscataway.
- [00:00:59.010]You can't miss it.
- [00:00:59.843]It's written everywhere in the stadium, I think.
- [00:01:02.026]But, great to be here at Rutgers tonight for the game.
- [00:01:04.770]You were not with us on the travel end.
- [00:01:06.720]You were, you made a stop in Michigan, I guess this week.
- [00:01:09.480]I did.
- [00:01:10.313]I've been on the road all week.
- [00:01:11.220]I was in DC beginning of the week working on the, some
- [00:01:14.340]of the background of the, around the new (indistinct)
- [00:01:15.645]National Lab, we're attracting to innovation campus ahead.
- [00:01:19.620]and then had a board meeting up in Michigan.
- [00:01:21.990]So I would, was in Spartan Land for a couple of days
- [00:01:25.080]in Lansing and came, came into Rutgers last night.
- [00:01:27.810]So just, just good to be here.
- [00:01:29.280]I hadn't been here in five years.
- [00:01:30.403]I think, I, we were here pretty early in my tenure
- [00:01:34.135]as chancellor and so it's,
- [00:01:34.968]it's nice to be back at Rutgers.
- [00:01:37.530]Very good.
- [00:01:38.363]Well great to have you here with us here tonight.
- [00:01:39.394]Boy, that felt good the last Saturday night.
- [00:01:41.310]Did it not to win a game and get that done.
- [00:01:43.080]Mark Whipple made a comment this week.
- [00:01:44.520]Chancellor, he said, I think we, the coaches believe
- [00:01:47.250]in the players more than the players do.
- [00:01:48.720]He goes, We got to flip that mentality.
- [00:01:50.430]They just have to have a more
- [00:01:51.570]of a belief about themselves.
- [00:01:52.590]Yeah, I mean,
- [00:01:53.423]the offense is shown they can move the ball
- [00:01:55.260]and they can score.
- [00:01:56.130]You know, we've got players in our offensive team
- [00:01:59.280]that are up in the stats nationally.
- [00:02:01.200]Casey's doing well in completion percentage.
- [00:02:04.292]Trey Palmer up there in the top end in receptions per game
- [00:02:07.852]and receiving yards per game.
- [00:02:09.450]Anthony Grant's up there and brushing yards per game.
- [00:02:12.540]So just excited to see what they can do
- [00:02:14.610]and continue to develop.
- [00:02:15.911]Along with the defense and the special teams
- [00:02:18.210]that had a a pretty good week last week.
- [00:02:20.760]I'm kind of getting tired of playing red, you know
- [00:02:22.060]that everybody's kind of using our red
- [00:02:24.240]in the Big 10, you know?
- [00:02:25.073]Here we are again in a red stadium tonight here at Rutgers.
- [00:02:27.660]But, excited to see this team continue to develop.
- [00:02:31.260]Oh. it was so fun to see that.
- [00:02:32.430]We talked about land grant institutions.
- [00:02:34.500]Obviously, Nebraska is one of those
- [00:02:36.570]and research is a big part of our university.
- [00:02:39.510]Nebraska researchers
- [00:02:40.560]are leading some new efforts to help farmers
- [00:02:43.230]and animal breeders to be more profitable and resilient.
- [00:02:46.830]What can you tell us about this research?
- [00:02:48.720]Well, it's, it's kind of exciting, Greg.
- [00:02:50.640]We just recently were notified that Nebraska
- [00:02:53.910]is one of three universities taking leading roles
- [00:02:56.100]in what's called
- [00:02:56.933]The Agricultural Genome to Phenome Initiative,
- [00:02:59.610]of the US Department of Agriculture.
- [00:03:01.964]Receiving a 1.9 billion grant
- [00:03:04.740]from USDA's National Institute for Food and Agriculture
- [00:03:07.649]in this arena.
- [00:03:09.361]This is my old world, kind of a, came out of this, this area
- [00:03:12.978]of genomics and relation to the animal industries
- [00:03:16.980]and the cattle industry.
- [00:03:18.060]And this, this project is one that's part with,
- [00:03:22.380]we're leading it along with Iowa State and along
- [00:03:24.660]with the University of Idaho that is taking genomic
- [00:03:27.638]information now at the, the gene level,
- [00:03:32.100]the DNA level in animals and in crops.
- [00:03:35.820]And using that information to create value in the phenome.
- [00:03:39.780]over the phenotypes.
- [00:03:40.620]What we see, what we observe and measure
- [00:03:43.180]in animal production and in livestock production.
- [00:03:46.188]It was put together as part of the 2008 18 Farm Bill
- [00:03:51.208]that the research title of USDA is under.
- [00:03:54.870]And so it's great to see this work happening
- [00:03:57.420]and being led by the University of Nebraska
- [00:03:59.517]and our researchers in this area of the genome to phenome
- [00:04:04.620]for animal and crop improvement.
- [00:04:06.870]That's exciting. Well, you know
- [00:04:08.040]I know the university's always looking
- [00:04:10.170]for ways to keep cost down for students.
- [00:04:13.049]There's recently announced a new milestone
- [00:04:15.150]in the amount of savings in textbooks.
- [00:04:17.640]Millions of dollars in this.
- [00:04:18.750]What's behind these cost savings for our students?
- [00:04:21.060]Well, you, you know,
- [00:04:22.500]we pride ourselves on being an access institution
- [00:04:25.170]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:26.490]That's part of what being a land grant university is.
- [00:04:29.654]And affordable access to that Big 10 education
- [00:04:32.487]as a hallmark for us at UNL.
- [00:04:35.730]We have programs that we've put in place
- [00:04:38.005]over the last several years,
- [00:04:40.170]textbooks that are saving students
- [00:04:42.326]from purchasing expensive textbooks
- [00:04:45.034]that have saved UNL alone,
- [00:04:47.232]almost $8 million in textbook costs.
- [00:04:51.270]That's replaced over 130,000 textbooks
- [00:04:54.111]with affordable content over those periods of years.
- [00:04:57.570]And that's just part of multiple
- [00:04:59.520]kind of programs that we're putting in
- [00:05:01.200]across the university system,
- [00:05:02.790]led by UNL that are allowing our students to save a lot
- [00:05:06.540]of cost and their education.
- [00:05:08.880]My hats certainly off to our instructors
- [00:05:12.029]and partners who've done the work to make sure
- [00:05:12.862]this is successful and has been implemented successfully
- [00:05:15.968]for these multiple affordable textbook programs
- [00:05:18.900]that are now in place across our campus.
- [00:05:21.180]We're not done.
- [00:05:22.129]We continue to look
- [00:05:23.072]for more ways for our students to save money.
- [00:05:25.879]We're piloting a new effort called
- [00:05:28.380]Open Nebraska that allows students to identify which courses
- [00:05:31.786]that may be offering these reduced cost digital materials
- [00:05:36.870]for registering online.
- [00:05:39.510]So helping them to make informed choices
- [00:05:41.997]about this reduced cost and increased access.
- [00:05:46.800]And I just point out, you know
- [00:05:48.960]I know there's been a lot of attention recently
- [00:05:51.060]on student debt that we at Nebraska we're very proud
- [00:05:54.914]of the fact that UNL our students graduate
- [00:05:57.256]those that do graduate with debt was only about 40%
- [00:06:01.200]of our students at third, less than the national average.
- [00:06:05.550]33% less than the national average.
- [00:06:08.790]Just another piece of that affordability
- [00:06:11.744]and access that we're proud of.
- [00:06:13.140]We're at the lowest tuition
- [00:06:14.760]in the Big 10, either in state or out state tuition.
- [00:06:18.146]And that just getting that access to that big 10 education
- [00:06:22.176]at the highest value possible is the hallmark
- [00:06:25.290]of our institution that we're very, very proud of.
- [00:06:27.210]These textbook savings,
- [00:06:28.350]You just made a, put a lot
- [00:06:29.460]of smiles on faces of parents to hear that.
- [00:06:31.620]Oh, absolutely.
- [00:06:32.453]I've been there, been there.
- [00:06:33.390]I know exactly, exactly how that feels.
- [00:06:36.829]So, you know, let's go ahead and get a big win.
- [00:06:38.760]Oh, wouldn't that be great?
- [00:06:40.140]When you said you were in Michigan
- [00:06:41.070]I thought you were up watching volleyball.
- [00:06:43.648]Yeah, well you know, they
- [00:06:44.481]they had a pretty good match there.
- [00:06:45.314]I did, I did watch it
- [00:06:46.320]but I watched it when I got here last night. (laughing)
- [00:06:48.423]Here last night.
- [00:06:49.410]All right enjoy the game today.
- [00:06:50.460]You bet. Go Big Red!
- [00:06:51.293]Greg] Ronnie Green with this here on Countdown to Kickoff.
