[00:00:12.750]Ronnie Green, I mentioned it's homecoming week.
[00:00:15.030]That's always a fun, fun week!
[00:00:16.740]A lot of activities were happening here!
[00:00:18.360]Oh yeah.
[00:00:19.193]It's stuff been going on all week.
[00:00:20.400]The students always really get into
[00:00:22.410]the homecoming activities, and we've had
[00:00:24.180]whole series of great things this week.
[00:00:26.100]And fortunately, it's been a great week, weather wise.
[00:00:28.830]Right? So we have this beautiful kind of
[00:00:30.660]early fall weather for a great lead up
[00:00:33.250]to the homecoming game tonight.
[00:00:34.830]It's my favorite time of the year.
[00:00:36.300]One part of the festivities for the week was
[00:00:37.829]the Athletic Department's Hall of Fame.
[00:00:40.110]Had a big induction ceremony on Friday.
[00:00:42.210]Pretty cool class.
[00:00:43.050]Your thoughts about this year's class?
[00:00:44.640]Yeah, so it really was great,
[00:00:46.410]great to be there yesterday, and to celebrate
[00:00:49.230]the legacies of eight new members
[00:00:51.510]of Nebraska's Athletics Hall of Fame across multiple sports,
[00:00:56.070]across multiple eras of Husker history.
[00:00:59.400]So much incredible Husker talent there in one room.
[00:01:03.090]We actually did it inside because of
[00:01:04.620]the construction in the Go Big facility yesterday.
[00:01:09.210]Including Christina Houghtelling, a powerhouse
[00:01:11.940]from our volleyball program from the early 2000s.
[00:01:14.760]Patrick Kirksey, same from our men's gymnastics
[00:01:17.370]program back in the day, in the 1980s,
[00:01:19.830]in those national championship teams,
[00:01:22.104]Shane Komine in bass, in baseball,
[00:01:25.173]Angela Thacker, a big, well-known name
[00:01:28.410]in women's track and field from the 1980s.
[00:01:31.410]Ali Viola in soft, softball.
[00:01:33.810]And then Bill Straub, you know, our,
[00:01:35.970]our perennially, nationally powered bowling team coach
[00:01:41.100]for so long in its history went into the,
[00:01:43.527]the Hall of Fame, and then two posthumous
[00:01:45.810]honorees in the Athletics Hall of Fame this year.
[00:01:49.290]Guy Chamberlin from back in the 19-teens
[00:01:51.960]in Husker football, and Louise Pound,
[00:01:54.660]who is gonna get recognized tonight
[00:01:57.540]during the game in Title IX,
[00:02:00.000]as a trailblazer in the Title IX arena.
[00:02:02.460]And of course we have a, a building now on campus
[00:02:05.130]our old business building, originally social sciences
[00:02:08.520]building on campus, renamed Louise Pound Hall,
[00:02:11.267]here just a few years ago.
[00:02:12.990]So wonderful new class of our Nebraska
[00:02:16.200]Athletics Hall of Fame.

[00:02:18.293]Well you mentioned big week with homecoming,
[00:02:19.320]but you also delivered your State of the University
[00:02:21.450]Address in the middle of the week.
[00:02:22.980]What were some of the highlights?
[00:02:24.810]Yeah, so we have this tradition
[00:02:26.490]at the university, where we have a,
[00:02:28.110]we call it our State of our University Address
[00:02:30.990]that kind of details the last year,
[00:02:34.650]and highlights of the last year across the, the university.
[00:02:38.133]And we combined that this year
[00:02:41.206]with a celebration of service awards for our, our,
[00:02:45.750]our employees, faculty and staff employees
[00:02:48.870]on five year increments; five years on service,
[00:02:51.660]10 years of service, all the way up to a few 55 years.
[00:02:55.950]We had one 55 year service employee,
[00:02:59.460]a couple 50s, a bunch of 45 years.
[00:03:02.100]So, so that was the front end of that event.
[00:03:04.920]And then about an hour long.
[00:03:07.470]You know, I, I talked a long time I think
[00:03:10.050]about an hour long review of the year,
[00:03:12.870]and talked about our success in record graduation
[00:03:17.400]classes the last few years,
[00:03:19.200]and particularly this past year.
[00:03:21.450]Talked about how our students are graduating
[00:03:23.160]faster than ever before, and how we've
[00:03:25.890]improved our four year graduation rates.
[00:03:27.900]How they're graduating with a lot less debt
[00:03:30.030]than the national average, about a third less
[00:03:32.310]than the national average, amongst our students
[00:03:34.950]who do graduate with some level of debt.
[00:03:38.370]Talked about the success in our research programs,
[00:03:40.680]another record year last year
[00:03:42.300]in total research expenditures,
[00:03:43.950]which was quite unusual, 'cause most institutions
[00:03:48.000]during the pandemic lost ground.
[00:03:49.770]We held our ground and gained a little bit,
[00:03:51.990]which we're very, very happy about.
[00:03:55.290]Talked about the Big 10, and changes in the Big 10,
[00:03:58.320]and in athletics, and about the success of
[00:04:02.100]Nebraska athletics, particularly in the NCAA
[00:04:04.740]graduation success rate, and Mark,
[00:04:07.500]we've never seen before, 95% last year,
[00:04:10.950]for Nebraska amongst one of the very best
[00:04:13.320]in public A5 institutions in the country.
[00:04:16.860]So great day, really enjoyed that with our community.
[00:04:22.140]And then we followed it with a
[00:04:24.000]kind of all university picnic,
[00:04:25.560]enjoying the beautiful weather on closed R Street,
[00:04:28.110]and had about 1000 people eating lunch together.
[00:04:30.480]So it was, it was a great day to celebrate the past year
[00:04:33.720]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
[00:04:35.400]Well fantastic. With all that going on,
[00:04:37.350]did you get a chance to even enjoy
[00:04:38.640]some of the homecoming activities?
[00:04:40.052](laughs) You know, I,
[00:04:41.490]I get pulled into some of that,
[00:04:43.320]whether, you know, it just by, by default.
[00:04:46.710]It has been a full week.
[00:04:48.060]Our, our students always engage at very high levels
[00:04:51.390]throughout the week, beginning on Monday.
[00:04:54.210]You know, they have what they call Showtime
[00:04:56.040]on Monday night that's a kind of dance competition
[00:04:59.310]amongst student organizations, fraternities,
[00:05:01.590]sororities, student organizations.
[00:05:03.870]And I've gotten pulled into that the last several years.
[00:05:06.870]So if you can envision several thousand students
[00:05:10.185]at night around a stage, cheering on dance competitions,
[00:05:15.450]and I happened to be in one of those the other night,
[00:05:17.490]so I don't know how that happens, but it happens.
[00:05:20.977]So it, all the things like that, all the way up to
[00:05:24.300]blood drives all week, student lawn displays,
[00:05:28.710]the big parade that was last night,
[00:05:32.100]culminating in "Cornstock" as it's become known,
[00:05:34.886]here right out on Memorial Plaza
[00:05:36.960]it's kind of an evening of fun
[00:05:38.970]for students and the community,
[00:05:41.580]canned food drives for our pantry for students.
[00:05:44.340]Just a lot of things that, that go into that
[00:05:47.790]homecoming week and celebrating the tradition
[00:05:50.400]of coming back to the university for,
[00:05:52.737]for our alums, and our supporters, and our friends.
[00:05:55.065]All great, what great week on campus.

[00:05:58.140]I, I can always ask you agricultural stuff.
[00:06:00.480]We probably have some folks that are listening
[00:06:02.400]to us right now that are in a combine,
[00:06:03.990]putting the, putting in the car, the crop,

[00:06:09.406]Yeah, it's been, it has been beautiful.
[00:06:11.070]And of course, this is peak of harvest season,
[00:06:13.260]and maybe even a little earlier harvest season

[00:06:17.970]that we've had, and dry season that we've had.
[00:06:20.400]So I know there're probably a lot of farmers in the field.
[00:06:23.970]I remember so well, my own father-in-law,
[00:06:26.250]you know, he, he would manage
[00:06:28.170]somehow to get out of the combines
[00:06:30.090]to still get to Lincoln for the game,
[00:06:33.210]and maybe particularly on a night game like tonight.
[00:06:35.670]We'll see, we'll see a lot of those folks in the stadium.
