- [00:00:00.450]Bryce Dueski with the Rural Radio Network
- [00:00:02.490]on our weekly Chat with the Chancellor program.
- [00:00:04.380]This week we're joined
- [00:00:05.213]by the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:07.170]That is Dr. Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.640]Dr. Green, great to see you here in the studio.
- [00:00:10.470]Good to see you, as always, Bryce.
- [00:00:12.210]There's a lot of things going on.
- [00:00:13.650]You made your return trip from Ireland.
- [00:00:15.270]We've got two home or two football games under the belt
- [00:00:18.060]at this point, as you and I had this conversation today
- [00:00:20.280]plus a new school year.
- [00:00:21.113]A lot of things, (chuckles)
- [00:00:22.520]a lot of moving pieces right now.
- [00:00:23.353]'no no no,
- [00:00:24.186]yeah, it doesn't seem like it's already been two weeks
- [00:00:25.320]since we're in Ireland, but it has and was a great trip
- [00:00:29.670]for a lot of Huskers to go to Ireland and Scotland as well.
- [00:00:35.400]I think we ended up somewhere upwards of almost
- [00:00:37.380]14,000 Husker fans and supporters who were over
- [00:00:42.570]on the Emerald is Wish the football game would've turned
- [00:00:45.780]out a little differently than it did
- [00:00:47.160]like all Nebraskans do
- [00:00:48.630]but it was a great experience for our football program
- [00:00:52.380]for our football players, and for everyone that went.
- [00:00:56.010]So it's already been two weeks,
- [00:00:57.450]but in that same time period
- [00:00:59.250]when we were over in Dublin
- [00:01:00.690]was the first week of classes at UNL
- [00:01:04.830]now in our, just finishing our third week
- [00:01:06.990]of classes on campus has been a really good start
- [00:01:11.280]to the year feels different
- [00:01:13.470]because all the hobbles are off now
- [00:01:15.570]and we're kind of back to normal, fully back to normal
- [00:01:19.470]for the first time, really in three years.
- [00:01:22.320]And that just feels different.
- [00:01:24.090]It feels so good, to be honest.
- [00:01:27.750]To have the students back
- [00:01:28.950]and have them engaged at the level they are.
- [00:01:31.890]Our freshman class, we formed the in on the field every year
- [00:01:36.660]with the incoming freshman the Friday before classes start.
- [00:01:39.630]So we did that right
- [00:01:40.560]before we left to go to Dublin a few weeks ago
- [00:01:43.530]and that class, you know
- [00:01:45.120]I've been in this role seven years
- [00:01:47.040]I cannot remember a freshman class
- [00:01:50.100]that is as engaged as they are, that are so happy to be here
- [00:01:54.360]are so excited to be back in classes
- [00:01:56.970]and to be fully engaged at that level.
- [00:02:00.480]My wife Jane and I were just remarking
- [00:02:02.250]about how students were coming up to us in ways
- [00:02:05.430]that we'd never seen before
- [00:02:07.170]and that's just really awesome to see.
- [00:02:09.600]Huge amount of building going on campus too.
- [00:02:12.210]You know, I've talked a little bit
- [00:02:13.200]about this on KRV in the past, but it just really settles
- [00:02:18.150]into you when you're on campus and you're walking on campus.
- [00:02:22.560]I remember referring to 2012 and 13 when PBA was being built
- [00:02:28.200]and the Haymarket was under development.
- [00:02:30.480]There was so much happening in Downtown Lincoln.
- [00:02:32.520]There were cranes everywhere seemed
- [00:02:34.230]like for a period of time, including on campus
- [00:02:37.410]we're kind of back in that same kind of environment again.
- [00:02:41.760]You come in for a Husker football game
- [00:02:43.440]you see cranes in the air everywhere.
- [00:02:46.110]And we're kind of reaching a point
- [00:02:48.390]in that process where we're bringing on
- [00:02:50.730]a lot of new facilities on our campuses.
- [00:02:53.310]So it would just in the next couple of weeks
- [00:02:56.670]we will dedicate new education hall
- [00:02:58.980]for the College of Education and Human Sciences.
- [00:03:01.470]Carolyn Pope Edwards Hall.
- [00:03:02.970]It's been renamed, used to be known
- [00:03:04.320]as Mabel Lee Hall before we have replaced that
- [00:03:08.310]with this new facility that's now complete.
- [00:03:10.650]They moved in at the beginning of the semester
- [00:03:13.350]and we'll cut the ribbon on that brand new building here
- [00:03:16.770]in just a couple of weeks.
- [00:03:17.940]Our law library brand new renovated law library
- [00:03:21.150]that will cut the ribbon on also
- [00:03:22.770]in the next couple of weeks.
- [00:03:24.540]On Sunday on Patriot Day, this weekend,
- [00:03:28.830]911, I will celebrate the completion of a veteran's tribute
- [00:03:34.650]on our campus, the first one in history
- [00:03:37.110]that is a beautiful new Walking tribute
- [00:03:41.130]on the Memorial Plaza of our campus, right?
- [00:03:44.460]Military Naval science, right
- [00:03:45.990]by the College of Business Building
- [00:03:48.390]down from the stadium that we're very excited about.
- [00:03:52.200]I've been under development for three years
- [00:03:55.020]and is now complete and dedicating that.
- [00:03:58.020]And then you put on top of that
- [00:03:59.910]the building of Keywood Hall.
- [00:04:01.530]Largest engineering building project we've ever had
- [00:04:04.800]will be one of our largest academic facilities
- [00:04:07.230]when completed next year
- [00:04:08.640]be an instructional home for the College of Engineering.
- [00:04:12.540]We lifted the final beam onto the top of that structure
- [00:04:16.410]head that kind of milestone marker last week on campus.
- [00:04:21.570]So that's coming ahead.
- [00:04:23.490]115 million project,
- [00:04:25.410]largest academic project in our history
- [00:04:28.230]all privately funded, privately fundraised
- [00:04:31.920]and then the Go Big Project right by the stadium.
- [00:04:34.470]When you're in the stadium, you can't miss it.
- [00:04:36.000]It's right there.
- [00:04:37.500]And the crane's hovering over,
- [00:04:39.390]the big screen kind of in a sense
- [00:04:42.570]at the same time at that project is also on schedule
- [00:04:46.260]scheduled now to be occupied next June and June of 23 prior
- [00:04:50.460]to the beginning at the next sports season.
- [00:04:53.340]So just that buzz that comes with,
- [00:04:57.600]so many new things happening on campus,
- [00:05:01.230]just on city campus or on East campus
- [00:05:03.600]or on innovation campus
- [00:05:05.880]we just have so much happening that it's very exciting.
- [00:05:08.940]A lot of building projects
- [00:05:09.930]and a lot of momentum around some of the things happening,
- [00:05:11.880]all the things really happening
- [00:05:12.960]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:05:15.240]A couple of acronyms.
- [00:05:16.230]The KRV on listeners are very familiar
- [00:05:18.030]with Kasner and IANR.
- [00:05:20.160]Each of those entities are celebrating a milestone
- [00:05:22.890]and anniversary, right?
- [00:05:24.360]Well Bryce you're at Kasner grads yourself, (Bryce laughs)
- [00:05:26.910]I remember you as a budding young student
- [00:05:29.100]a number of years ago in Kasner.
- [00:05:31.290]And it is a big year kind of in the timeline of history
- [00:05:36.300]for the College of Ag and Natural Resources here at UNL.
- [00:05:40.410]It's 150th anniversary year
- [00:05:43.230]formally established in 1872, just a few years
- [00:05:47.550]behind the formal foundation of UNL being laid.
- [00:05:50.760]University of Nebraska being laid
- [00:05:52.440]is a land grain institution.
- [00:05:54.930]So Kasner's a 150th is this year
- [00:05:57.540]the Institute of Ag and Natural Resources
- [00:06:00.570]which houses Kasner also houses Nebraska Extension
- [00:06:04.740]also houses the agricultural experiment stations
- [00:06:07.470]across the state of Nebraska for the university.
- [00:06:11.730]The institute was actually formalized 50 years ago
- [00:06:15.630]in the early 1970s.
- [00:06:17.790]And that was in response to leaders in agriculture
- [00:06:21.540]specifically across the state of Nebraska
- [00:06:23.880]who really wanted to increase the level of involvement
- [00:06:28.290]in the Ag sciences and Ag
- [00:06:30.270]everything Ag and food and natural resources at the time
- [00:06:34.470]in this new structure of the Institute
- [00:06:36.600]of Ag and Natural Resources was formed in 1972.
- [00:06:39.840]So just coincides 50 and 150 this year
- [00:06:43.740]for in INR and for Kasner, you know it.
- [00:06:48.180]Yeah, I think of any of your listeners know
- [00:06:50.340]that the university in Nebraska
- [00:06:52.890]has long time been a national and international leader
- [00:06:56.490]in this field.
- [00:06:58.680]We talk a lot about our land grant mission
- [00:07:00.780]of teaching and research and extension.
- [00:07:03.630]You know, Kasner and INR embody that at the very core level.
- [00:07:09.600]And we have long been recognized as one
- [00:07:12.060]of the top balanced programs in the country,
- [00:07:15.420]in the Ag sciences and the food sciences
- [00:07:18.480]and the Natural Resources sciences across the board.
- [00:07:21.780]I was talking about enrollment a little bit earlier.
- [00:07:24.240]One of the highlights
- [00:07:25.200]in our enrollment where we saw increases
- [00:07:27.330]in our enrollment this year in our freshman class as well
- [00:07:30.210]as in our overall enrollment included Kasner.
- [00:07:33.427]So Kasner had one of its largest freshman classes in history
- [00:07:37.710]has more non-resident students than it's ever hit
- [00:07:40.500]and has more domestic Nebraska students
- [00:07:42.990]than it's freshman class than it's ever hit.
- [00:07:45.300]So I know they're celebrating that as well.
- [00:07:48.720]In looking forward to the next few years ahead
- [00:07:51.090]in Kasner matched up, should have mentioned
- [00:07:54.240]earlier engineering that was up 7% finding performing arts.
- [00:07:57.630]That was up 6.2% as well.
- [00:08:01.470]So I know it to say fair here.
- [00:08:04.080]Just in the last week, Kasner
- [00:08:07.500]and INR kind of kicked off this yearlong celebration
- [00:08:10.530]of this big anniversary year for them.
- [00:08:13.170]I know that your listeners will be hearing a lot more
- [00:08:15.930]about that throughout the year as well.
- [00:08:18.750]You can't kick off a celebration
- [00:08:19.980]without dairy store ice cream.
- [00:08:21.000]I think they've got custom flavors, (chuckles).
- [00:08:22.380]That's right, that's right.
- [00:08:23.230](Bryce laughs)
- [00:08:24.150]Anyway, Chancellor Green, before we let you go
- [00:08:25.710]final word this week
- [00:08:27.120]final thoughts you'd like to share with the listeners.
- [00:08:29.040]Well, this is probably a topic our next chat
- [00:08:34.020]with the chancellor perhaps, but you know
- [00:08:36.270]I know folks are following a lot of the change
- [00:08:39.840]that is happening around the collegiate athletics landscape,
- [00:08:45.780]both nationally and locally for us.
- [00:08:49.230]Everything from changes in the way
- [00:08:52.080]that student athletes can be rewarded
- [00:08:54.840]for their name, image, and likeness.
- [00:08:56.370]That's a new term that kind of came into most people's radar
- [00:08:59.670]many people's radar this last, just a year ago, really.
- [00:09:03.420]So we're in the early stages and days of that change
- [00:09:06.900]in collegiate athletics, tremendous amount of change going
- [00:09:10.890]on around the organization of athletics, particularly
- [00:09:14.580]in conferences and conference alignment
- [00:09:17.280]and some of the big realignments that we're seeing happening
- [00:09:20.220]including with the expansion of the Big 12
- [00:09:23.430]just recently it announced likely with more to come
- [00:09:27.150]before we're all said and done in that arena.
- [00:09:30.870]So, you know, lot happening there.
- [00:09:33.030]We're positioned extremely well at the University
- [00:09:35.150]of Nebraska in that evolving and changing landscape
- [00:09:38.460]and maybe of interest in the next time
- [00:09:40.860]we'll dig into that a little bit deeper
- [00:09:43.380]and give some insight into that for your listeners.
- [00:09:46.080]That sounds good.
- [00:09:46.913]And we know Memorial Stadium we packed tonight
- [00:09:48.420]is the Huskers face off with Georgia Southern.
- [00:09:51.270]That's right.
- [00:09:52.103]I understand.
- [00:09:52.936]They're coming with their bald eagle.
- [00:09:53.820]You know not every week
- [00:09:57.230]in a football game do you get contacted
- [00:09:59.640]by the president of the opponent team.
- [00:10:04.260]But that actually happened this week and the president
- [00:10:06.720]of Georgia Southern reached out and is coming to the game
- [00:10:09.960]is gonna be here tonight and said, you know
- [00:10:13.680]we have the tradition
- [00:10:14.670]of bringing our bald eagle, you know,
- [00:10:16.620]that's their mascot, their live mascot
- [00:10:19.110]and see, can we bring our bald eagle?
- [00:10:22.650]You know, not everyone
- [00:10:24.510]every place will allow that to happen.
- [00:10:26.250]So we've been kind of sorting out how we're gonna
- [00:10:28.200]have the bald eagle, (Bryce laughing)
- [00:10:29.070]on the field, you know for the first time in a
- [00:10:31.740]while to have a live mascot.
- [00:10:33.540]But looking forward
- [00:10:34.410]to hosting Joe Georgia Southern into a great game.
- [00:10:36.570]We'll keep an eye out for that bald eagle tonight.
- [00:10:38.760]That is the voice
- [00:10:39.593]of the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:10:41.880]Dr. Ronnie Green.
- [00:10:43.260]With this week's chat with the Chancellor program.
- [00:10:45.180]I'm Bryce Dueski reporting.
