- [00:00:04.200]It's an exciting time in the
- [00:00:05.833]College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
- [00:00:09.533]As we mark a very important point in our college's history
- [00:00:12.766]2022 is the 150th anniversary for CASNR.
- [00:00:16.666]We're using this important time in college's history
- [00:00:19.766]to reflect upon the past,
- [00:00:21.766]celebrate the present and to use this as
- [00:00:24.000]an opportunity to dream big about the future.
- [00:00:26.699]Well, this is a really exciting year in the College of Engineering.
- [00:00:29.033]From a facilities perspective, we're making real progress on Kiewit Hall.
- [00:00:33.500]So we're past the midpoint on
- [00:00:35.266]almost $200 million worth of construction.
- [00:00:37.566]It's is going to transform the College of Engineering.
- [00:00:40.233]38 Huskers CARE peer educators are being trained
- [00:00:43.566]to deliver relationship violence prevention workshops this fall,
- [00:00:47.000]an important initiative to further developing
- [00:00:49.566]a safe and caring campus culture.
- [00:00:52.633]Big things this fall with ORED.
- [00:00:54.600]Grand Challenges 2.0
- [00:00:57.600]We have our first year of projects and planning underway.
- [00:01:02.000]And now we're working with faculty, with students,
- [00:01:04.599]with partners on what will be year two
- [00:01:07.533]of the Grand Challenge process.
- [00:01:09.266]The big thing happening this year is the
- [00:01:11.566]renovation and expansion to our building.
- [00:01:15.133]We have an increase in enrollment.
- [00:01:17.633]And so now we will have the studio space to house them.
- [00:01:22.266]One of the things that ODI is doing
- [00:01:24.299]to really bring people together around conversations
- [00:01:27.200]is hosting Husker Dialogues that we had earlier this semester,
- [00:01:31.266]our Faculty of Color Symposium,
- [00:01:33.000]and a diversity symposium in the spring.
- [00:01:35.799]All of these experiences are really important
- [00:01:37.700]to ensuring that we are creating a place that people can
- [00:01:40.433]come around the table and talk through the issues
- [00:01:42.833]that most impact them and the impact the university.
- [00:01:46.299]Thanks to some infrastructure investments
- [00:01:48.266]we made last year, the libraries has big plans to
- [00:01:51.266]increase affordability of course materials for students.
- [00:01:54.599]We want to make sure that every dollar the library spends
- [00:01:58.633]helps save students money.
- [00:02:01.566]We're partnering with all units in the college
- [00:02:03.633]to help attract and launch students for early career success.
- [00:02:07.000]Three new career coaches in two academic navigators
- [00:02:09.866]have been added to the team to bolster these efforts.
- [00:02:12.266]The College of Education and Human Sciences has new
- [00:02:15.266]learning spaces opening this year with
- [00:02:17.900]Carolyn Pope Edwards Hall and the Barkley Memorial Center.
- [00:02:21.133]These spaces will be places where teaching and learning is visible.
- [00:02:25.433]We're excited for the Glenn Korff School of Music building projects,
- [00:02:29.099]a new building coming in 2025,
- [00:02:32.566]and the renovation of the Kimball Recital Hall,
- [00:02:34.833]which begins later this year,
- [00:02:36.699]We are building a brand new three set television studio
- [00:02:40.099]with space for a news desk, for an interview set
- [00:02:43.133]and a full virtual set with the newsroom in the middle of all of it.
- [00:02:46.300]So that we can clearly show that we are engaging students
- [00:02:48.900]from print to digital to broadcast and back.
- [00:02:52.033]This year students at the College of Law can take a new course:
- [00:02:55.000]the Housing Justice Clinic where
- [00:02:56.766]they will represent tenants facing eviction.
- [00:02:59.400]And this builds on the work of the Tenant Assistance Project
- [00:03:02.199]that has helped over 2000 Nebraska families
- [00:03:04.733]facing eviction in the last year and a half.
- [00:03:07.000]This year marks the fifth anniversary for Howard L Hawks Hall.
- [00:03:11.300]We also are excited to be offering
- [00:03:13.266]our new business and law major
- [00:03:14.866]for undergraduates in partnership with the College of Law.
- [00:03:18.533]We have a lot of momentum this semester,
- [00:03:20.133]especially coming out of a pandemic.
- [00:03:22.000]Students really need to stay involved
- [00:03:23.466]and to get engaged on campus,
- [00:03:25.400]collaborate with their peers and just have fun.
- [00:03:27.933]In addition to our role of representing graduate students,
- [00:03:30.833]the Graduate Student Assembly has voted to work on
- [00:03:33.866]improving graduate students stipends
- [00:03:35.500]and health insurance here at UNL.
- [00:03:37.766]For this year, specifically I'm really excited for the
- [00:03:40.966]peer mentor group we have.
- [00:03:42.366]They're such a wonderful group of students.
- [00:03:45.033]I love all of them, when we had our orientation
- [00:03:47.366]we all just kind of clicked instantly.
- [00:03:49.233]And it just helps to further the mission of
- [00:03:51.533]OASIS and the plan for the university.
- [00:04:51.833]We are enhancing the student experience
- [00:04:53.966]through a variety of experiential learning programs.
- [00:04:56.566]Three signature programs for us are the
- [00:04:58.500]Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship program,
- [00:05:01.133]Rural Prosperity Nebraska Fellows
- [00:05:03.433]and our Changemakers
- [00:05:05.199]Student Affairs creates intentional experiences
- [00:05:07.899]that contribute to student's academic career and personal goals
- [00:05:11.399]through involvement in student government, fraternities,
- [00:05:14.266]sororities, learning communities, recreational activities,
- [00:05:17.899]peer mentorship roles and recognized student organizations.
- [00:05:21.500]Students find a sense of community and belonging,
- [00:05:24.399]key factors in student retention
- [00:05:26.866]Every day, we're working on the foundation of N2025.
- [00:05:31.300]One of our more detailed projects has to do with
- [00:05:33.933]creative dashboards that allow everyone on campus
- [00:05:37.066]to see the progress that's been made on all of the targets for N2025.
- [00:05:42.233]We have experiential learning happening
- [00:05:45.199]in many studios, like the example of
- [00:05:49.199]Nate Bicak and Steve Hardy's studio
- [00:05:52.766]and their students who developed concepts for a new
- [00:05:57.100]15-unit housing development in Valentine, Nebraska.
- [00:06:01.066]In the College of Engineering, we've been fortunate
- [00:06:02.800]to hire a bunch of new faculty in the last five years.
- [00:06:05.800]And they're just doing incredibly impactful research,
- [00:06:08.566]research that solving problems of global importance
- [00:06:11.033]while having an impact in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:06:13.466]So ODI, for N2025, we are working with colleges and universities
- [00:06:17.833]and building out diversity plans and diversity strategies
- [00:06:20.433]so that every single unit, every single college at Nebraska,
- [00:06:24.199]has a plan and an action around diversity and inclusion.
- [00:06:27.966]As we recruit new faculty and staff in the library,
- [00:06:30.500]we're working hard to increase the diversity of our community.
- [00:06:33.899]But we're also making sure we have
- [00:06:36.100]the vital conversations about what that means
- [00:06:38.866]for our everyday work in the libraries.
- [00:06:41.333]From getting rid of outdated and offensive terms
- [00:06:45.066]in our catalogs, to making sure that our collections better
- [00:06:48.500]represent the diversity of the human experience.
- [00:06:51.800]Since 2019, the launch of racial literacy roundtables
- [00:06:55.699]in the College of Education and Human Sciences,
- [00:06:58.399]our team has hosted over 20 conversations
- [00:07:02.833]that help our students practice and prepare for
- [00:07:05.800]difficult conversations around topics that can be challenging or divisive.
- [00:07:10.566]Our Racial Literacy Roundtables team won the
- [00:07:13.433]NU System 2022 Inclusive Excellence Award.
- [00:07:17.466]The Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts
- [00:07:20.100]has established itself as a core research facility at Nebraska.
- [00:07:24.433]This will leverage the Carson Emerging Media Arts Center
- [00:07:27.466]as an international national and regional interdisciplinary
- [00:07:31.633]asset for research partnerships.
- [00:07:34.266]We instituted a college-wide distribution requirement
- [00:07:36.966]in human diversity and US communities,
- [00:07:39.233]added a new minor in Racial Justice Equity Inclusion
- [00:07:42.166]through the Institute for Ethnic Studies
- [00:07:44.199]and are in the process of developing a new minor
- [00:07:46.466]in Asian American Studies.
- [00:07:48.266]The N2025 plan emphasizes broadening Nebraska engagement,
- [00:07:52.633]and we're building on our Children's Justice Clinic
- [00:07:55.366]to educate attorneys across the state through a
- [00:07:58.500]children's justice attorney education program.
- [00:08:01.233]We invested in building the new Experience Lab
- [00:08:04.500]that requires that all students spend at least five hours a week
- [00:08:07.399]in one of our media outlets or agencies.
- [00:08:09.933]The College of Business takes the N2025 strategic plan to heart
- [00:08:14.300]and we've utilized it in rewriting our own strategic plan.
- [00:08:18.699]The N2025 plan helps guide ASUN as we engage
- [00:08:22.333]with students and state legislators,
- [00:08:24.133]as we consider the impacts of the university on
- [00:08:27.300]every single taxpayer in person in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:08:30.533]I want to see good communication between undergraduates,
- [00:08:33.733]graduate students and UNL administration
- [00:08:36.633]to keep the good things we learned from the pandemic,
- [00:08:39.299]along with returning to the things we missed.
- [00:08:42.200]As a graduate student in the educational psych program,
- [00:08:45.100]I'm very excited about working on creating more inclusive
- [00:08:48.766]and trauma informed classrooms in my area.
- [00:09:32.200]In the College of Journalism and Mass Communications our students
- [00:09:35.133]"do from day one."
- [00:09:36.866]We develop inclusive leaders who advance justice,
- [00:09:40.100]solve problems and serve with integrity.
- [00:09:42.666]Bottom line, we are leading the future of business
- [00:09:46.000]We continue to innovate our offerings,
- [00:09:48.333]find ways to increase access
- [00:09:50.433]and act upon employer feedback to meet
- [00:09:52.899]the workforce needs of our state.
- [00:09:55.033]In the College of Arts and Sciences we are seeking truth,
- [00:09:57.666]advancing knowledge and
- [00:09:58.933]deepening our understanding of humanity.
- [00:10:01.266]We empower leaders and innovators
- [00:10:04.000]to create a healthy, resilient and beautiful world.
- [00:10:08.700]In the College of Engineering, we drive
- [00:10:10.899]economic development in the state and region
- [00:10:12.799]while solving problems of global importance.
- [00:10:15.233]Student Affairs connects learning with life.
- [00:10:18.066]Impact.
- [00:10:18.833]In the Office of Research and Economic Development,
- [00:10:20.866]it's all about impact.
- [00:10:22.799]A phrase that really best describes the libraries
- [00:10:25.399]is information justice, and access for all.
- [00:10:29.166]We are emerging as a national leader in the arts.
- [00:10:32.399]And we are the home of an emerging media arts program
- [00:10:35.633]that is fast becoming an international force.
- [00:10:38.766]We're called "the people's college" for a reason.
- [00:10:41.133]We're all about people from our students,
- [00:10:43.533]to our faculty and staff and our community stakeholders.
- [00:10:46.933]Together we're passionate about creating learning experiences
- [00:10:50.366]that enhance lives and strengthen relationships.
- [00:10:53.433]So one phrase that describes the Office of Diversity and Inclusion
- [00:10:57.066]is igniting inclusive excellence.
- [00:11:00.233]Changemakers we are tackling the big challenges
- [00:11:03.100]at the nexus of food, energy, water and societal systems
- [00:11:06.899]that are impacting Nebraska and our global society.
- [00:11:37.533]It's all about the people.
- [00:11:38.899]We have amazing students, postdocs, staff, faculty,
- [00:11:43.233]and alumni that are leaving their mark on our world.
- [00:11:46.366]I love leading Student Affairs because I know
- [00:11:48.799]students success matters.
- [00:11:50.166]And I get to work with 700+ professionals who also
- [00:11:53.966]are passionate about student success and
- [00:11:56.100]come to work every day to make it happen.
- [00:11:58.466]Nebraska Engineering is just a fantastic
- [00:12:00.600]collection of people.
- [00:12:01.966]Our faculty, staff and students are amazing
- [00:12:03.966]as our industry and philanthropic supporters.
- [00:12:06.333]It's a real pleasure to lead the college.
- [00:12:08.666]Every day, we're in the middle of the best ideas.
- [00:12:11.466]And we get to see the impact that our faculty
- [00:12:14.533]and our partners, the students are bringing to the world.
- [00:12:17.433]I love leading the College of Architecture because
- [00:12:21.266]we have the opportunity to show students their potential.
- [00:12:26.200]Every single person truly does matter.
- [00:12:28.933]And every single action is critical.
- [00:12:31.633]In that diversity inclusion absolutely is a way to facilitate
- [00:12:35.733]both people feeling like they matter, but also interactions.
- [00:12:39.066]And that's why I do this work.
- [00:12:40.833]There are information problems in every discipline
- [00:12:43.733]and for scholars at every level
- [00:12:45.733]from first year students to senior faculty.
- [00:12:48.500]And it's really a joy to get to partner
- [00:12:50.333]with them to find those solutions.
- [00:12:52.733]I love leading the College of Education and Human Sciences
- [00:12:55.899]because I personally want to impact the human condition.
- [00:12:59.299]And my college is all about impacting people's lives.
- [00:13:03.000]I just started as dean in July and
- [00:13:05.299]several things attracted me to this position,
- [00:13:07.399]including strong faculty and programs across the college,
- [00:13:10.433]a long standing leadership vision to create substantial
- [00:13:14.133]and consequential endowments,
- [00:13:16.633]and an international leadership role in training students
- [00:13:19.466]to thrive in the rapidly changing world of arts industries,
- [00:13:23.100]and in a culture that is consuming the arts at every corner.
- [00:13:27.399]What I love about Nebraska is also profoundly true
- [00:13:30.433]about the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:13:32.200]It is the people their character, commitment and
- [00:13:35.100]care for others that makes us a special place
- [00:13:37.933]where all are welcome, and each person's distinctive path
- [00:13:41.233]is supported and celebrated.
- [00:13:43.233]The media industry is always changing.
- [00:13:45.233]It's always evolving. It's always growing.
- [00:13:47.233]And we have the opportunity to be on the cutting edge.
- [00:13:49.966]I love leaving the College of Law because of our community.
- [00:13:52.633]We have engaged faculty and dedicated staff,
- [00:13:55.566]a really talented leadership team,
- [00:13:57.766]and incredibly supportive alumni and stakeholders.
- [00:14:00.799]And we all come together to, I think, change students lives.
- [00:14:04.399]And the education that our students receive,
- [00:14:06.966]they go out and improve the world.
- [00:14:08.833]The people and what they create together
- [00:14:11.066]are what I love about leading the College of Business.
- [00:14:13.433]It takes a village, our entire Nebraska business community
- [00:14:17.266]to realize our strategic goals.
- [00:14:19.233]I love making friends and working with such a
- [00:14:21.733]diverse population of graduate students here at UNL.
- [00:14:25.033]I love being a Husker because of the values that is
- [00:14:29.233]intertwined within each of the communities that's present at UNL.
- [00:14:33.233]And becoming a Husker was probably one of
- [00:14:35.133]the best decisions that I have made.
- [00:14:37.600]I love being a Husker because I get to create relationships
- [00:14:40.500]with so many different kinds of people
- [00:14:42.399]from freshman to the chancellor.
- [00:14:45.100]I love being a Husker because I'm constantly seeing
- [00:14:48.066]our students, our faculty and our staff
- [00:14:50.466]working to make our university better.
- [00:14:52.866]As a person who has a lot of connections in other states,
- [00:14:55.899]I've never been more connected to the business world
- [00:14:59.000]and to other things that are going to help me succeed
- [00:15:02.266]than the connections I made here at Nebraska.
