- [00:00:00.240]Greg Sharp back here on our Husker pregame show.
- [00:00:02.752]Nebraska taking on Kentucky here in a little bit
- [00:00:04.470]and a chance to sit down with the Chancellor
- [00:00:05.880]of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:07.800]Our first volleyball match of the season, Chancellor,
- [00:00:09.990]that's outside of the state of Nebraska,
- [00:00:12.300]gotta bounce back, right, after that tough one
- [00:00:14.310]at the Stanford the other night
- [00:00:15.420]against a good Kentucky team here today.
- [00:00:17.610]Oh, that's right. That's right.
- [00:00:19.410]Kentucky's had a little success here
- [00:00:21.437]in the the last few years, both in Lexington,
- [00:00:24.420]where we're playing today at the University of Kentucky
- [00:00:26.640]and down the road in Louisville as well.
- [00:00:30.300]Definitely another big challenge
- [00:00:32.040]following the Stanford match here this past week
- [00:00:35.850]for John and the team,
- [00:00:37.800]especially competing against team now coached
- [00:00:40.860]by former Husker Craig Skinner that we all know,
- [00:00:44.970]like meeting, the Ole Miss folks here a few weeks ago,
- [00:00:48.540]with Kayla, Dani Busboom just played this team
- [00:00:51.960]with her Louisville squad and went to five earlier this week
- [00:00:55.716]and beat the University of Kentucky in five.
- [00:00:59.160]So just seeing John's influence through these former players
- [00:01:03.510]that are now having such great success.
- [00:01:05.520]We got another one tonight, University of Kentucky.
- [00:01:08.520]It's the last non-conference game for the Huskers
- [00:01:11.190]before Big 10 play begins,
- [00:01:13.170]so we're excited to see how they do tonight in Lexington.
- [00:01:16.320]Huskers need to bring that energy today here at UNL.
- [00:01:18.390]Well, UNL researchers announced a major grant
- [00:01:21.090]from the Department of Energy.
- [00:01:22.860]What kind of renewable fuel will the research be exploring?
- [00:01:27.060]Well, this builds on some really strong research
- [00:01:29.580]that we've had here for some time
- [00:01:31.140]in our Center for Biotechnology in the Beadle Center
- [00:01:34.440]on campus, it's led by Nebraska biochemist Ed Cahoon.
- [00:01:39.270]There was a lot of joking going on around,
- [00:01:40.890]you and I joked about this a little bit when we were
- [00:01:43.050]in Ireland, Ed's one of my Scottish cousins,
- [00:01:47.040]we're actually related.
- [00:01:48.990]Cahoon was my Scottish family name.
- [00:01:51.990]And so we're distant cousins from that same line.
- [00:01:56.610]So I'm gonna kid him
- [00:01:57.450]about whether he gets his kilt out here pretty soon,
- [00:01:59.691]but Ed is a well known biochemist,
- [00:02:03.360]working in the oil seed area, in particular.
- [00:02:06.990]just received news this past week of a new five year
- [00:02:10.627]$12.8 million grant from the US Department of Energy
- [00:02:14.670]to fund an interdisciplinary team that he leads.
- [00:02:18.690]Has eight institutions represented in it,
- [00:02:21.840]exploring how the plant species camelina and penny-cress,
- [00:02:27.330]that contain fatty acids necessary for producing biofuels
- [00:02:30.990]and biomaterials, could help replace petroleum products
- [00:02:35.100]and mitigate the effects of climate change.
- [00:02:36.840]So it builds on work in synthetic biology
- [00:02:39.720]that Ed's been leading for some time.
- [00:02:42.540]You might think about, we hear a lot about how automobiles
- [00:02:46.920]and the industry is moving toward electrified vehicles
- [00:02:50.220]and we're seeing more and more on the road every day,
- [00:02:53.160]but there's gonna be a lot of vehicles
- [00:02:54.990]that that doesn't apply for,
- [00:02:57.480]in larger transport vehicles
- [00:03:00.630]and jets and tractor trailers, heavy equipment.
- [00:03:03.540]And so feed stocks that could be engineered
- [00:03:06.180]that would allow bio-based fuel petroleum production
- [00:03:10.500]like this are going to become ever increasingly important
- [00:03:14.820]in the future.
- [00:03:15.960]Ed's long been a national leader in this area.
- [00:03:19.350]So this grant just underscores,
- [00:03:21.690]not just his research expertise,
- [00:03:23.700]but how he can lead interdisciplinary groups
- [00:03:25.830]like this leading forward.
- [00:03:27.480]Should also mention Ed is the director
- [00:03:30.210]of our Center for Plant Science Innovation,
- [00:03:32.610]recognized around the world,
- [00:03:34.770]here in our Institute of Ag and Natural Resources.
- [00:03:37.710]Very good.
- [00:03:38.998]Well, thank you so much for updating us on that.
- [00:03:39.840]Enjoy the match coming up here.
- [00:03:41.460]Well go Big Red. Beat Kentucky.
- [00:03:43.050]There he is.
- [00:03:44.219]Ronnie Green with us here on our pregame show.
- [00:03:45.210]JB's back with more pregame next.
