- [00:00:00.240]Welcome back, "Countdown to Kickoff."
- [00:00:01.380]Huskers and the Oklahoma Sooners here this morning.
- [00:00:03.380]11:05 kickoff for the Battle of the Big Reds.
- [00:00:06.720]Great to have Oklahoma in town for this matchup today.
- [00:00:09.300]And as we do each and every weekend, pregame.
- [00:00:10.860]A chance to catch up
- [00:00:11.693]with the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:13.950]Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:15.300]Interesting week for Husker football, needless to say,
- [00:00:17.400]with a change at the top of leadership for this.
- [00:00:19.770]So what are you expecting out of this one today?
- [00:00:22.022]Well, you know, Greg, it has been kind of a tough week
- [00:00:25.950]in a lot of ways, you know,
- [00:00:27.180]with the transition and the head coach position
- [00:00:30.210]for Husker Football.
- [00:00:31.500]And, and I just wanna say publicly, thank you to Scott Frost
- [00:00:34.680]for his commitment to his Alma Mater,
- [00:00:37.470]and what he did here,
- [00:00:38.461]and coming back and working hard at it.
- [00:00:41.230]You know, I'm gonna miss Scott, no one, a lot of us will,
- [00:00:45.271]but with every change, there is an opportunity, right?
- [00:00:48.180]And we wish certainly the best to Mickey Joseph,
- [00:00:51.470]in his head coaching debut today.
- [00:00:54.597]It doesn't get much bigger for a long time Husker fans,
- [00:00:57.540]than playing Oklahoma here in Memorial Stadium.
- [00:01:01.230]It's also a big opportunity for our players
- [00:01:03.660]to focus on coming together now
- [00:01:06.210]toward improving to play their very best,
- [00:01:09.180]and overcoming the challenges that are in front of them.
- [00:01:11.521]We kicked off this morning earlier today
- [00:01:14.490]with Fox's "Big Noon Kickoff" over on campus.
- [00:01:17.250]So it was actually in the center of campus,
- [00:01:19.110]between the Union and the Reg school and the Meyer Commons.
- [00:01:21.990]And our students were a big part of that.
- [00:01:23.730]It was exciting and energizing to be there.
- [00:01:26.143]And of course we'll all be there today,
- [00:01:28.710]cheering on our Huskers to compete.
- [00:01:30.600]Like I know that they can.
- [00:01:32.220]Very good.
- [00:01:33.053]Well, the university had some big news this week as well.
- [00:01:35.040]Another high mark for turning research
- [00:01:37.290]into something new in the marketplace.
- [00:01:39.330]How does Nebraska compare
- [00:01:40.530]with other universities in this regard?
- [00:01:42.390]Well, we, as a research university, Greg,
- [00:01:45.330]where we're creating new knowledge every day
- [00:01:47.790]across all of our fields,
- [00:01:49.932]you know, that's a big part of what we do.
- [00:01:52.680]But also transferring that research,
- [00:01:54.810]and getting it into application and use
- [00:01:57.480]is a hallmark of ours as well.
- [00:01:59.640]And just this past week, the rankings were released,
- [00:02:03.709]you know, for the top a hundred academic institutions
- [00:02:06.989]in the United States and earning United States patents.
- [00:02:10.830]For the fifth straight year,
- [00:02:12.212]the University of Nebraska ranks highly on that list.
- [00:02:15.991]We were number 77 in the world last year in the 2020 report.
- [00:02:21.630]We currently are at number 64.
- [00:02:24.270]So have gone up in that ranking from
- [00:02:27.510]the National Academy of Inventors
- [00:02:29.160]and Intellectual Property Owners Association.
- [00:02:31.943]We had a total of 43 patents,
- [00:02:35.160]across the University of Nebraska system in 2021,
- [00:02:38.601]that were registered with
- [00:02:40.020]U.S. Patents and Trademark Office.
- [00:02:42.600]UNL researchers, Husker researchers,
- [00:02:45.450]were named on 25 of those patents.
- [00:02:48.330]Three of those jointly
- [00:02:49.560]with University of Nebraska Medical Center.
- [00:02:51.712]And the balance of the rest of those 43
- [00:02:54.559]were at the University of Nebraska Medical Center,
- [00:02:58.440]and our partners and colleagues there.
- [00:03:00.800]These rankins reflect our combined ingenuity,
- [00:03:04.020]and entrepreneurship in the university at work.
- [00:03:06.840]It strengthens our economy,
- [00:03:08.250]it improves lives in Nebraska and around the globe,
- [00:03:11.141]and just you know, shows the extension if you will,
- [00:03:14.610]of our research going into action.
- [00:03:16.997]Big research areas included in these patents,
- [00:03:20.550]included biotechnology, agriculture, healthcare,
- [00:03:23.610]engineering, and others as well.
- [00:03:26.281]We see startup companies
- [00:03:27.678]coming out of these again this year.
- [00:03:30.240]Some of those patents were featured with Shane Farritor,
- [00:03:33.260]at our College of Engineering,
- [00:03:35.400]in the new Virtual Incision company
- [00:03:37.680]at Nebraska Innovation Campus.
- [00:03:39.701]So very, very happy about seeing
- [00:03:42.210]the University of Nebraska
- [00:03:43.440]amongst the top institutions in the world,
- [00:03:46.050]in registering U.S. patents.
- [00:03:47.790]Oh, that is fantastic.
- [00:03:48.690]Great news.
- [00:03:49.523]Thank you so much for sharing that as well.
- [00:03:51.000]Well, some folks who maybe
- [00:03:51.958]enter the stadium from the east side
- [00:03:54.180]may have noticed a new feature to Memorial Hall.
- [00:03:57.120]What, what should folks who haven't seen it yet
- [00:03:59.190]be looking for over on Vine Street?
- [00:04:00.947]Well, you know, last Sunday,
- [00:04:03.923]remember was 9/11 and we,
- [00:04:08.100]you know, stopped in time,
- [00:04:09.810]and kind of remembered 21 years ago,
- [00:04:12.577]when 9/11 happened for Patriot Day.
- [00:04:15.960]And at that very time last Sunday,
- [00:04:19.045]we also were in the process of dedicating
- [00:04:22.170]and kind of cutting the ribbon on a new Veteran's Tribute
- [00:04:25.080]here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:04:27.300]at 14th and Vine Street's kind of in front of
- [00:04:30.360]the Military and Naval Science,
- [00:04:32.040]Pershing Building, many people think of it as, on campus.
- [00:04:35.400]As well as further west in front of the Colosseum.
- [00:04:40.119]This is a 3.75 million dollar project,
- [00:04:43.380]that was funded entirely through private donations.
- [00:04:46.229]It's been part of an ongoing part
- [00:04:48.510]of upgrading Memorial Mall.
- [00:04:50.670]We started by redoing Vine Street
- [00:04:52.800]and Memorial Mall just here a few years ago.
- [00:04:55.620]And, and at this time, upgrades,
- [00:04:58.742]that portion of the mall,
- [00:05:01.080]in also recognizing and honoring all veterans,
- [00:05:04.721]from Nebraska and built to honor them.
- [00:05:08.880]The project is designed and was inspired
- [00:05:11.970]by the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial
- [00:05:14.730]that's in Washington, DC.
- [00:05:16.470]It features 20 glass panels that contain quotes
- [00:05:21.240]from mil- veterans of the military,
- [00:05:23.850]as well as their families.
- [00:05:25.570]Around key components of leadership and camaraderie
- [00:05:30.120]and integrity and service and courage and other areas.
- [00:05:34.190]It includes a redesign for the entrance to our
- [00:05:37.530]Military and Naval Science Building
- [00:05:39.300]that features chevrons with those words engraved on them.
- [00:05:44.010]And it just creates this opportunity
- [00:05:46.470]for everyone that visits our campus,
- [00:05:48.570]including our students every day,
- [00:05:50.212]to walk through that tribute and remember
- [00:05:52.749]and honor all veterans and their families.
- [00:05:56.820]Beautiful and significant tribute to those
- [00:05:58.920]willing to sacrifice something larger than themselves,
- [00:06:02.310]for something larger than our, than themselves.
- [00:06:06.222]I said at that dedication last Sunday,
- [00:06:10.533]that if not for the courage of a few
- [00:06:13.680]who have been willing to serve in our military over time,
- [00:06:16.440]but we might reflect on how different
- [00:06:18.870]our lives might have been,
- [00:06:20.477]in the absence of that service.
- [00:06:23.070]So great new tribute, very proud of it.
- [00:06:25.785]Four years in the making,
- [00:06:27.585]and now a forever part
- [00:06:31.377]of the University of Nebraska campus.
- [00:06:33.510]Very good folks.
- [00:06:34.343]You might want to check that out if you leave the stadium,
- [00:06:36.090]but if you're coming into town sometime in the coming weeks.
- [00:06:39.030]Great to see you, let's enjoy this day, today.
- [00:06:41.139]And let's get out there and get us a victory.
- [00:06:43.189]Go big red.
- [00:06:44.310]There he is.
- [00:06:45.143]Ronnie Green with us here on "Countdown to Kickoff."
- [00:06:46.680]Matt Coatney will join us next.
- [00:06:48.330]He'll have the Big 10 Blitz.
