- [00:00:07.890]On behalf of the College of Business
- [00:00:09.390]and the University of Nebraska Foundation,
- [00:00:11.130]I wanna welcome all of you to Hawks Hall
- [00:00:14.610]for our scholarship brunch.
- [00:00:17.317](gentle music)
- [00:00:23.880]We're really excited to provide an opportunity
- [00:00:26.010]for our students to connect and engage with
- [00:00:28.350]some of our generous donors.
- [00:00:30.270]I hope that you will continue to share your stories
- [00:00:32.700]and learn more about one another during
- [00:00:34.530]today's event and beyond.
- [00:00:36.695](gentle music)
- [00:00:39.030]We're kicking off the celebration of
- [00:00:41.280]our fifth year anniversary in Hawks Hall.
- [00:00:44.275]One of the reasons it's a big deal is it was
- [00:00:46.530]the very first building built on campus
- [00:00:49.230]that was entirely privately funded.
- [00:00:51.690]And what that means is we had alumni, friends,
- [00:00:55.140]and donors willing to provide $84 million to construct
- [00:00:59.310]this facility to benefit all of our students.
- [00:01:03.150]So our alumni that are giving to our future alumni,
- [00:01:06.810]because they see the impact that it has on all of you,
- [00:01:10.590]and the impact that it has on their businesses here
- [00:01:12.960]in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:01:14.995](gentle music)
- [00:01:18.120]In 1990, tuition here was $53 a credit hour,
- [00:01:21.570]and expenses ran about $4,000 a year.
- [00:01:24.360]I was lucky enough to earn a David Scholarship
- [00:01:26.010]to bring the tab down to $4,600 but that was
- [00:01:28.500]a massive sum to me then.
- [00:01:30.120]Today, our tuition at the College of Business
- [00:01:32.130]is $321 a credit hour.
- [00:01:34.500]And living expenses are nearly $15,000.
- [00:01:37.710]That number all in, when you think about an annual basis,
- [00:01:40.110]is over $24,000.
- [00:01:43.440]In 2018, my wife and I decided to establish
- [00:01:46.440]a scholarship fund here at Nebraska.
- [00:01:48.150]We did it for a number of reasons.
- [00:01:49.740]Carmen and I believe that we were called to provide
- [00:01:51.450]support to others.
- [00:01:53.040]Honoring that support that we received, which enabled us
- [00:01:55.800]to lead successful and productive lives.
- [00:01:58.620]It's my greatest hope for the students
- [00:02:00.600]that you achieve monumental success in your chosen careers.
- [00:02:04.620]As you do so, I encourage you to recognize those
- [00:02:07.380]that helped you along the way.
- [00:02:09.240]I'll bet when you do, you'll be moved to do something
- [00:02:10.980]significant to honor those people.
- [00:02:14.400]I am a first-generation student,
- [00:02:16.050]so this scholarship provides a lot for not just myself
- [00:02:19.080]but my entire family.
- [00:02:20.790]My parents have shown me firsthand what a great work ethic
- [00:02:23.970]looks like, and continue to work tirelessly to provide
- [00:02:26.700]for my sibling and I.
- [00:02:28.710]Though I tried to cover all of my schooling expenses
- [00:02:31.500]with financial aid, I still had a significant amount
- [00:02:34.440]that I had to pay out of pocket.
- [00:02:37.140]Stress is just expected when you're going to college,
- [00:02:40.830]but the hope is that it's just from classes
- [00:02:43.440]and not finances.
- [00:02:45.630]So I opted to live off-campus, and my expenses and rent
- [00:02:49.020]have dramatically decreased.
- [00:02:51.180]With this scholarship and most of the financial aid
- [00:02:53.610]I had from last year, I can control my financial stress
- [00:02:56.940]this year.
- [00:02:58.170]I can work less hours at my job and focus more of my time
- [00:03:01.920]to studying and utilizing all the facilities this campus
- [00:03:05.027]has to offer.
- [00:03:07.740]My career goals are to work for one of
- [00:03:10.260]the big four accounting firms, or a private firm that
- [00:03:13.500]will align with my values of helping one's community.
- [00:03:17.160]I hope to be part of something bigger than myself.
- [00:03:20.400]Thank you to our donors for what you have given us.
- [00:03:22.380]Thank you to the faculty for setting up this event.
- [00:03:25.140]And of course, thank you to all you guys for listening
- [00:03:27.810]to me share a bit about myself.
- [00:03:30.450]We're extremely grateful to all of our donors
- [00:03:33.000]for being here.
- [00:03:34.440]Who've made the decision to pay it forward,
- [00:03:37.170]to create an impact, and instill a culture of giving
- [00:03:40.770]in the College of Business.
- [00:03:43.417](gentle music)
