- [00:00:00.150]We're back here on KLIN Kickoff.
- [00:00:01.530]Huskers and the Eagles of Georgia Southern here.
- [00:00:04.320]A night game at Memorial Stadium.
- [00:00:05.700]Those are always really special.
- [00:00:07.020]As always, special for us to sit down
- [00:00:08.417]with the Chancellor
- [00:00:09.540]of the University of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:11.910]I hope you had a nice Labor Day weekend,
- [00:00:13.680]but I know it's really good to have the college
- [00:00:15.600]football back in full swing, isn't it?
- [00:00:17.610]It sure is Greg.
- [00:00:18.840]Good to be back in Memorial Stadium last week
- [00:00:21.540]and get that first win under our belt
- [00:00:23.760]against North Dakota.
- [00:00:25.260]And to see everyone back in the stadium.
- [00:00:27.360]I'm looking forward to seeing if we can
- [00:00:29.130]build on that today in our game
- [00:00:31.440]with Georgia Southern and it,
- [00:00:32.940]the weather's good for us, you know,
- [00:00:34.800]we're hoping that'll be the case.
- [00:00:36.758]And, you know, we also have
- [00:00:39.272]our other sports full at play.
- [00:00:41.580]You know, volleyball is off to a great start
- [00:00:44.310]had a big week this week
- [00:00:45.480]with the match up at Creighton,
- [00:00:47.040]got Stanford coming up
- [00:00:48.240]around the corner here next week.
- [00:00:50.220]Probably the biggest match
- [00:00:51.390]of the preseason for sure across the country,
- [00:00:54.756]and soccer is underway as well.
- [00:00:57.660]So good, good to be back
- [00:00:59.010]in the swing and be back in Memorial Stadium.
- [00:01:01.500]Well, Chancellor,
- [00:01:02.333]I know last week the university got some good news
- [00:01:04.050]about federal funding for a new robotics program.
- [00:01:07.200]What kind of impact is this gonna have on our state?
- [00:01:09.780]Yeah, Greg, well, we got
- [00:01:11.130]very good news
- [00:01:12.480]that we are the recipient
- [00:01:13.978]on a $25 million grant
- [00:01:16.620]from the Department of Commerce
- [00:01:18.210]and the federal government.
- [00:01:19.950]The economic development authority
- [00:01:21.450]within the Department of Commerce
- [00:01:22.920]to establish a Heartland Robotics Cluster here
- [00:01:28.410]planted at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:01:31.830]The program is actually led by Invest Nebraska.
- [00:01:35.700]Dan Hoffman has taken the lead on that
- [00:01:37.680]from Invest Nebraska.
- [00:01:39.330]But our College of Engineering,
- [00:01:40.740]Nebraska Engineering, is the lead in the project.
- [00:01:43.622]Along with Nebraska Innovation Campus,
- [00:01:46.621]the Nebraska extension manufacturing partnership
- [00:01:50.640]that is part of our Institute of Ag and Natural Resources
- [00:01:53.374]here at UNL.
- [00:01:55.227]And what's called The Combine,
- [00:01:57.420]a startup group of companies
- [00:01:59.940]located on Nebraska Innovation Campus.
- [00:02:03.600]The university's involvement in this
- [00:02:06.192]will include building out robotics related research.
- [00:02:10.590]It will include some teaching spaces
- [00:02:12.845]in Kiewit Hall and our Scott Engineering Center
- [00:02:15.720]and our Splinter Labs in the College of Engineering.
- [00:02:18.686]And, you know, it's centered around, you know,
- [00:02:22.800]growing Nebraska's future pipeline
- [00:02:25.110]in automation, robotics,
- [00:02:27.150]computer vision, artificial intelligence,
- [00:02:29.760]just like it sounds, robotics.
- [00:02:31.547]In the development of robotics innovation.
- [00:02:33.990]So, big news for the university,
- [00:02:36.000]we're partnered in this work as well
- [00:02:39.450]with Northeast Community College
- [00:02:41.280]in the northeast part of the state,
- [00:02:42.840]Metro Community College in Omaha.
- [00:02:45.630]This is just a big win for the university
- [00:02:47.940]and for our College of Engineering
- [00:02:50.130]and Innovation Campus.
- [00:02:51.300]Well that is outstanding.
- [00:02:52.560]I'm visiting with
- [00:02:53.520]University of Nebraska Lincoln Chancellor,
- [00:02:55.140]Ronnie Green here on KLIN Kickoff.
- [00:02:56.880]Every game at Memorial Stadium is special,
- [00:02:59.100]but today,
- [00:03:00.180]we're gonna tip our hat to the ag industry.
- [00:03:02.310]It's known as Ag Day at the game
- [00:03:04.080]and agriculture is such a big part of this state.
- [00:03:06.930]In addition to leading research in agriculture,
- [00:03:09.278]how does the university get that research
- [00:03:12.030]out to all of our farmers and rancher friends?
- [00:03:14.400]Well, it is great to be celebrating Ag Day.
- [00:03:16.440]It's kind of our traditional time of year
- [00:03:18.120]that we do that
- [00:03:19.380]in the Husker football season
- [00:03:20.850]and great to be doing that in tonight's game
- [00:03:23.640]and this weekend.
- [00:03:24.930]You know ag is a big deal in Nebraska.
- [00:03:27.510]No one can miss that, right?
- [00:03:30.270]It's a third of our GDP in the state.
- [00:03:32.760]We're one of the leading ag regions in the world here.
- [00:03:36.780]You know, I often say
- [00:03:38.426]that ag and food is centered in Nebraska,
- [00:03:42.180]that we're the center of the universe
- [00:03:43.800]in that regard as a state.
- [00:03:45.900]And the university, of course,
- [00:03:47.880]has a long history associated with agriculture,
- [00:03:50.940]going back to our very founding.
- [00:03:52.260]In fact, this year,
- [00:03:53.700]our College of Ag Sciences and Natural Resources
- [00:03:56.250]is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
- [00:03:59.550]It was just a few years after the university was established
- [00:04:02.719]that a college of agriculture became part
- [00:04:05.460]of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:07.329]And our Institute of Ag and Natural Resources
- [00:04:10.320]is celebrating officially its 50th anniversary this year.
- [00:04:14.160]From a time period in the 1970s,
- [00:04:16.680]when agriculture leaders in the state
- [00:04:19.530]really wanted to amp up even further
- [00:04:22.680]the agriculture science, research, education
- [00:04:25.830]and extension efforts of the university.
- [00:04:28.560]Long considered a leader in the agriculture and food space
- [00:04:33.810]internationally
- [00:04:34.890]continue to have that leadership as a university,
- [00:04:37.980]our research programs continue to impact on a daily basis
- [00:04:43.620]our production agriculture and agribusiness
- [00:04:46.560]throughout the state of Nebraska and the world.
- [00:04:49.317]And we also take very seriously
- [00:04:52.500]that extension or engagement arm
- [00:04:55.904]of the land-grant university,
- [00:04:59.070]not only in agriculture,
- [00:05:00.690]but certainly heavily centered around agriculture.
- [00:05:03.480]A Nebraska extension considered widely
- [00:05:06.720]to be the national leader in the U.S.
- [00:05:09.619]in engagement of the university
- [00:05:12.540]across all 93 counties of the state.
- [00:05:14.980]Yeah, I'm a beef guy.
- [00:05:16.230]I think you, you all know that I
- [00:05:18.474]live, breathe,
- [00:05:19.560]and even still walk and talk the beef industry.
- [00:05:23.430]And of course there is nowhere in the world quite
- [00:05:26.640]like the beef industry in Nebraska
- [00:05:28.980]and even most recently, our ag programs
- [00:05:32.469]have established a beef innovation hub
- [00:05:36.420]with a wide range of leadership
- [00:05:39.120]in advisory capacity that I'm very excited about
- [00:05:42.060]to continue seeing leadership in that sector as well.
- [00:05:45.330]So Ag Day,
- [00:05:46.650]great to be celebrating it
- [00:05:48.220]with our state and through the game today.
- [00:05:51.770]And certainly the university has been a leader
- [00:05:54.930]and continues to be a leader in everything ag and food.
- [00:05:58.200]Very good.
- [00:05:59.033]Well, I know it's been,
- [00:05:59.866]cause you said busy time of year,
- [00:06:00.699]state fair wrapped up earlier this weekend
- [00:06:02.100]in Grand Island,
- [00:06:02.933]and I heard they had a great couple of weeks.
- [00:06:03.930]Harvest isn't very far away.
- [00:06:05.338]Oh, you know, there's
- [00:06:06.746]people already
- [00:06:07.699]itching and have, you know
- [00:06:09.663]in that regard,
- [00:06:11.012]it's, it's been a challenging year.
- [00:06:14.190]You know, I'm still engaged
- [00:06:16.650]in the ag business myself and in our family.
- [00:06:19.140]And it's, you know, it's been a
- [00:06:21.000]a drought year across much of our state.
- [00:06:24.150]We've had some, some pretty tough weather
- [00:06:26.580]in parts of the state
- [00:06:27.660]early in the growing season.
- [00:06:29.160]In particular, we had a lot of hail damage
- [00:06:32.340]in regions of the state,
- [00:06:34.320]but harvest is here.
- [00:06:36.000]It's always a great time of year and
- [00:06:39.540]just I can't say enough about our ag producers
- [00:06:43.230]and what they do in this state
- [00:06:45.720]and how they are leaders really internationally.
- [00:06:48.660]We'll be thinking about them
- [00:06:49.590]in the coming weeks.
- [00:06:50.423]We'll be thinking about the Huskers here real soon.
- [00:06:51.900]Good luck. Let's have fun today.
- [00:06:52.950]Let's have fun. Go Big Red.
- [00:06:54.270]There he is, Ronnie Greene with us
- [00:06:55.380]here on KLIN Kickoff
- [00:06:56.490]Matt Cutney's back with a Big 10 blitz,
- [00:06:58.350]coming up next.
