- [00:00:00.180]Welcome back, "Countdown to kickoff".
- [00:00:01.380]Huskers and the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota today,
- [00:00:03.780]the home opener for the Big Red here this afternoon
- [00:00:06.420]as we do each and every week a chance
- [00:00:07.860]to catch up with the chancellor
- [00:00:08.910]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:11.490]I'm excited, I know you're excited
- [00:00:13.530]to be back at Memorial Stadium.
- [00:00:15.210]Absolutely, nothing like the start of the school year.
- [00:00:17.820]Nothing like the start of football season,
- [00:00:19.680]the first home game opener for us at home this year
- [00:00:23.790]and for the fans to be back in Lincoln,
- [00:00:26.400]for the stadium to be full,
- [00:00:27.870]for the excitement that we know is in the air
- [00:00:29.940]around the start of the home football season,
- [00:00:33.150]just real special day in Husker Nation.
- [00:00:35.580]Great to see everyone here
- [00:00:37.560]and looking forward to the next four games
- [00:00:39.930]that we have here at home
- [00:00:41.520]between now and the first part of October.
- [00:00:43.020]Yeah, we've traveled enough for a while
- [00:00:44.220]after the big trip across the pond.
- [00:00:46.590]Well, already two weeks of the semester in the books,
- [00:00:49.440]and I know it was a little odd
- [00:00:50.820]for you last week being in Ireland,
- [00:00:52.170]you weren't here for the first week of classes
- [00:00:53.700]but two weeks for the academic year.
- [00:00:55.650]I know you're excited for the academic year going.
- [00:00:57.780]Absolutely, we've been through interesting,
- [00:01:01.140]you know, few last couple of years.
- [00:01:03.090]And this is the first time
- [00:01:04.920]that we've really felt fully back,
- [00:01:07.170]fully kind of back to normal.
- [00:01:09.840]In my mind, we're in the endemic phase of this pandemic,
- [00:01:12.390]whatever anybody else says, it's kind of where we are.
- [00:01:15.000]And to have our students back in force
- [00:01:18.330]and fully engaged, and our faculty
- [00:01:20.100]and staff back fully engaged.
- [00:01:22.170]We had freshman convocation, freshman run through the tunnel
- [00:01:25.110]and take their picture in the big end on the stadium
- [00:01:28.290]in the field, Friday before we went to Dublin,
- [00:01:31.950]before classes started.
- [00:01:33.720]I have never seen our freshmen as engaged
- [00:01:37.470]as they were that night, right.
- [00:01:39.420]We had a big barbecue for 'em
- [00:01:41.070]and just the level of engagement
- [00:01:43.770]and the excitement that they have
- [00:01:45.390]for being at the university was palpable.
- [00:01:48.180]There's no other way to describe it.
- [00:01:49.770]So great to be back.
- [00:01:51.454]We were coming back off of some record graduations
- [00:01:54.461]that have been great for us.
- [00:01:56.760]And I think we're looking at a really great year ahead
- [00:01:59.670]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:02:01.290]I know you always say your favorite time
- [00:02:02.730]of year is when school starts
- [00:02:03.960]and when you're at those three graduations.
- [00:02:05.790]You had the August one just a couple of weeks ago
- [00:02:08.250]and it seems like we keep setting record numbers
- [00:02:10.800]with graduates, is that right?
- [00:02:11.999]Absolutely.
- [00:02:13.290]You know, in May we celebrated
- [00:02:15.090]our largest graduating May class in the history of UNL.
- [00:02:19.470]Three of the last four years
- [00:02:21.150]had been record graduating classes
- [00:02:23.070]for us across the entire year,
- [00:02:25.140]that August, December, and May combined commencements.
- [00:02:29.820]This year over 5,700 new graduates, the past academic year,
- [00:02:34.170]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:02:36.270]And again, one of the top two in our history.
- [00:02:39.750]And all of that during the time
- [00:02:41.550]that we had this pandemic around us.
- [00:02:43.950]It's just absolutely phenomenal for us to see.
- [00:02:47.550]I'm very proud of those new graduates,
- [00:02:49.290]proud of what they're doing.
- [00:02:50.820]They're going into a hot job market, obviously.
- [00:02:53.940]We haven't seen like this in quite a while.
- [00:02:56.880]I'm proud of the fact that we're graduating workers
- [00:03:00.930]in very high demand fields across the institution.
- [00:03:04.230]Our School of Computing is comparing more graduates
- [00:03:07.620]in that area than ever before in our history
- [00:03:11.070]in computing science and data applications.
- [00:03:13.410]Engineering is graduating more than we ever have before.
- [00:03:17.460]We're preparing most of the teachers, the lawyers,
- [00:03:21.240]the pre-medical students, in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:03:25.290]So just very, very proud of those graduates
- [00:03:28.500]and those record classes that we have experienced.
- [00:03:31.260]We also are very proud of the fact
- [00:03:32.940]that our research program continues to grow.
- [00:03:36.120]We are the research intensive university
- [00:03:38.460]in the state of Nebraska, the only what was called R1,
- [00:03:41.430]research intensive university.
- [00:03:43.800]This past year, just a few months ago,
- [00:03:46.800]we announced that our physics faculty
- [00:03:49.620]took over the leadership of the Hadron Super Collider
- [00:03:52.350]in Switzerland for all efforts of the US
- [00:03:55.050]in relation to that Super Collider,
- [00:03:57.210]took it over from Princeton University,
- [00:03:59.940]the largest grant in history for us in the research space.
- [00:04:03.900]So I'm very, very proud of what's happening
- [00:04:05.820]in our research community
- [00:04:08.550]and as always continuing to lead
- [00:04:10.710]in the ag arena around the world in our research efforts.
- [00:04:15.990]And then of course, the engagement,
- [00:04:17.520]that third part and important part
- [00:04:19.170]of our land grant mission,
- [00:04:21.060]where we continue to be engaged
- [00:04:22.680]in all 93 counties across the state
- [00:04:25.260]and in research and extension centers across the state.
- [00:04:28.800]We are considered one of the very top
- [00:04:31.020]extension programs in the country.
- [00:04:33.030]The university of Nebraska continues to be seen
- [00:04:35.370]as a national leader in that arena
- [00:04:38.220]and including in that, 4-H,
- [00:04:40.710]which of course is really hot right now
- [00:04:42.510]because State Fair is on, literally as we speak here,
- [00:04:46.950]this weekend in Grand Island.
- [00:04:49.290]And in 4-H, we continue to be the leader nationally
- [00:04:53.130]where we have more students enrolled in 4-H
- [00:04:56.130]that are age eligible than any other state
- [00:04:58.350]in the United States.
- [00:04:59.310]One in three Nebraska's young people
- [00:05:02.100]are involved in 4-H that are age eligible.
- [00:05:04.440]So just so much happening,
- [00:05:06.660]the land grant university here
- [00:05:08.490]at the university of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:05:10.230]Oh my goodness, fantastic!
- [00:05:11.520]Great update on all of that.
- [00:05:13.200]And we wish everybody that's into their school year,
- [00:05:15.240]best of luck throughout the coming months.
- [00:05:17.250]And we'll get more updates each week from the chancellor.
- [00:05:19.200]Busy day here for the network!
- [00:05:21.420]Football here at 2:40 with North Dakota.
- [00:05:23.910]Volleyball's gonna play tonight.
- [00:05:25.080]Against the Husker alum is Kayla Banwarth
- [00:05:27.223]and Ole Miss brought her team back.
- [00:05:28.898]Yeah, yeah, John's got so many stars out
- [00:05:33.450]in the volleyball world as we know and follow.
- [00:05:35.760]And it's great to have Kayla back here in town
- [00:05:38.580]and bringing her team in to play the Lady Huskers.
- [00:05:41.460]And of course, they're off to a great start
- [00:05:43.170]and are looking like that Omaha trip
- [00:05:46.159]in the end of the year might be a very good one for us.
- [00:05:49.140]Good place for you to break your kilt out.
- [00:05:50.400]Yeah, go Big Red!
- [00:05:51.690]There you go. (laughing) Yeah, Rod agreeing with us
- [00:05:53.370]here on "Countdown to kickoff".
- [00:05:54.870]All right, when we come back,
- [00:05:55.703]Matt Coatney will check out the Big Ten.
- [00:05:57.750]The Big Ten blitz is straight ahead.
