- [00:00:00.270]Back inside our Huskers Radio Network Broadcast Center
- [00:00:02.340]which is sponsored by Acres.
- [00:00:03.630]They're in the Midwest, premier John Deere dealer
- [00:00:05.880]supplying the equipment and service to advance agriculture
- [00:00:08.880]and much more acres solutions for every field.
- [00:00:11.040]And what a treat for us to have in studio with us,
- [00:00:12.990]the chancellor of the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:14.580]Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:15.413]Last time I saw you, we were not in this country.
- [00:00:17.370]We were over in Dublin, Ireland.
- [00:00:18.930]How was your trip minus the end of the football game?
- [00:00:21.960]Hey, it was a great trip.
- [00:00:23.255]We don't get that opportunity very often.
- [00:00:25.740]Now, we talked about it when we were in Dublin last week
- [00:00:29.100]that it's only the second time in recent memory
- [00:00:32.190]and recent a while back that the Huskers have gotten to play
- [00:00:36.377]outside the country for an official game.
- [00:00:37.860]So a way to kick off the season in Dublin,
- [00:00:40.170]we'd been looking forward to it for almost three years.
- [00:00:42.828]Finally came around and had the opportunity to do it,
- [00:00:46.110]I think our students learned a lot.
- [00:00:47.730]I think we showed Dublin what traveling fans means
- [00:00:51.540]when Husker nation showed up in the numbers that it did.
- [00:00:54.087]Don't know what the final numbers were,
- [00:00:56.370]but it looked like it was about four to one
- [00:00:58.740]in that category against Northwestern
- [00:01:00.810]and just a great trip overall.
- [00:01:03.690]Irish people are some of the most hospitable in the world.
- [00:01:07.415]And we certainly saw that from our Huskers
- [00:01:10.770]that were over in Dublin for the week.
- [00:01:12.900]But now we're back.
- [00:01:14.010]And I know you're glad.
- [00:01:14.910]I'm really glad to be back
- [00:01:15.990]in this stadium for the next month
- [00:01:17.490]with four straight home games.
- [00:01:18.720]I bet you're looking forward to these next-
- [00:01:20.550]Oh, we sure are.
- [00:01:21.420]You know, we have a pretty long stretch, right?
- [00:01:24.540]Going into early October being at home and have a bi week
- [00:01:28.560]stuck in there in the latter part of the month.
- [00:01:30.900]So looking forward to these next three straight weeks,
- [00:01:33.030]three games coming up here in Memorial Stadium
- [00:01:36.240]and seeing Husker Nation back together again
- [00:01:38.880]for those games and then we got volleyball as well.
- [00:01:42.630]And women's soccer competing,
- [00:01:44.850]volleyball team had a great kickoff weekend
- [00:01:47.430]last weekend here.
- [00:01:49.230]And all of their matches in September are here in Nebraska
- [00:01:53.430]with exception of one, a big match with Kentucky
- [00:01:55.937]later in September, but lots for our fans to be able to see
- [00:02:00.292]and participate in being back together as a group.
- [00:02:03.631]That's another one of the things that felt so good in Dublin
- [00:02:08.190]was just to be able to be with people and be, be normal.
- [00:02:12.210]Right?
- [00:02:13.260]So looking forward to a great month of September.
- [00:02:15.600]Chancellor, we get a chance to see updated progress
- [00:02:18.120]on the go big project right outside our window here
- [00:02:20.400]and it's made amazing advancements since the spring game,
- [00:02:23.430]I'm looking forward for our fans to get here on campus
- [00:02:25.410]over the weekend and see all the progress there.
- [00:02:27.060]But you've got other projects going on campus as well.
- [00:02:30.240]Lots of building happening around here.
- [00:02:32.220]Yeah.
- [00:02:33.053]You know what?
- [00:02:33.886]I'm reminded back six or seven years ago
- [00:02:36.030]when I first started in this job that we talked about,
- [00:02:39.030]we'd just come out of a time
- [00:02:40.770]what we called the era of the Cranes in Downtown Lincoln.
- [00:02:43.313]It's when we were building our business building
- [00:02:46.020]here on campus.
- [00:02:47.040]It's when we were building PBA
- [00:02:48.630]finishing up the building of PBA and Haymarket
- [00:02:50.880]and so much activity in Downtown Lincoln.
- [00:02:53.130]We kind of are back to that again, right?
- [00:02:55.847]So when you drive into Downtown Lincoln,
- [00:02:57.510]when our fans come in this weekend for the game
- [00:03:00.570]they're gonna see Cranes again all over Downtown.
- [00:03:03.720]It looks a lot like it did in 2014 and 15.
- [00:03:06.738]On campus here, we just opened Carolyn Pope Edwards Hall
- [00:03:10.890]that is being used for its first term.
- [00:03:14.010]We'll officially cut the ribbon on it here
- [00:03:16.080]in a couple of weeks for the College of Education
- [00:03:18.150]and Human Sciences,
- [00:03:19.470]brand new facility for our teachers college
- [00:03:22.097]particularly early childhood education
- [00:03:24.649]and teacher learning and teacher education,
- [00:03:27.462]that's now open here on 14th Street,
- [00:03:30.900]just down the way from us.
- [00:03:33.075]The Keywood Hall project and engineering,
- [00:03:36.725]just today, we signed the beam.
- [00:03:39.990]That is the top beam going up on that structure
- [00:03:42.840]over a little bit further East
- [00:03:45.120]for the college of engineering,
- [00:03:46.710]largest privately funded project
- [00:03:48.740]in the history of the university,
- [00:03:50.550]115 million new instructional facility
- [00:03:53.760]for the college of engineering.
- [00:03:54.870]Our law library completely renovated
- [00:03:57.270]and open for the college of law.
- [00:03:59.123]This fall architecture hall,
- [00:04:01.075]the oldest building on our campus,
- [00:04:03.525]the original library of the University of Nebraska
- [00:04:07.062]just redesigned for design studios.
- [00:04:10.890]And what was the library for architecture,
- [00:04:13.650]now is three big new design studios
- [00:04:16.230]for the college of architecture
- [00:04:17.790]that they're enjoying a lot there.
- [00:04:19.920]And the list just goes on and on of projects that we have
- [00:04:23.689]either underway, under construction,
- [00:04:26.246]almost a billion dollars of construction on our campuses
- [00:04:31.080]here at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
- [00:04:32.880]Wonderful.
- [00:04:33.713]Just adding to what is already just such a beautiful campus,
- [00:04:36.060]again, visiting with University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:04:39.075]chancellor Ronnie green here on Sports Nightly.
- [00:04:40.530]Lot of topnotch programs in the university as well.
- [00:04:43.320]I wanna get your thoughts about one of those
- [00:04:45.420]and it's preparing Husker students for work in my industry,
- [00:04:48.990]the sports media industry.
- [00:04:50.190]What makes this program unique?
- [00:04:52.110]Yeah, Greg, we pretty proud of this,
- [00:04:54.420]our journalism college
- [00:04:55.770]the college of journalism and mass communications
- [00:04:57.960]just a few years ago,
- [00:04:59.340]I think this is our third year in this new major
- [00:05:03.060]and in the J school that is sports media and communications.
- [00:05:07.500]It's unique.
- [00:05:08.460]It's the only program like it in the country.
- [00:05:11.196]There's a few other institutions
- [00:05:13.680]that have certificate programs or specialization programs,
- [00:05:17.610]but no one else offers a full blown major
- [00:05:20.580]in sports media and communications like this.
- [00:05:23.099]It has been very rapidly taken up by a lot of students.
- [00:05:27.060]We now have several hundred majors
- [00:05:29.190]in that sports media and comm area.
- [00:05:31.562]And I should add, there's been a lot of talk
- [00:05:36.090]around about USC and UCLA joining the big 10 here in 2024
- [00:05:41.130]big news in the conference, certainly.
- [00:05:43.890]And in the intercollegiate sports world,
- [00:05:46.410]they don't even have a program in this area.
- [00:05:48.360]USC is pretty known for their work in this area,
- [00:05:53.010]but they don't have a program.
- [00:05:55.017]So very proud of it.
- [00:05:55.850]It's great opportunity for our students.
- [00:05:57.960]And so all the sports fans that are out there listening
- [00:06:00.930]on Sports Nightly,
- [00:06:01.980]if you know someone that has a passion for sports
- [00:06:05.430]and reporting on sports
- [00:06:07.050]and have strengths in writing and talking about it,
- [00:06:09.405]this would be a major for them to consider
- [00:06:12.210]here at the University of Nebraska Lincoln and our J school.
- [00:06:14.700]I've already spoken to one of those classes this week,
- [00:06:16.740]I see them at press conferences, at games.
- [00:06:18.930]It's a terrific program and I applaud all of that.
- [00:06:21.450]They get a chance to really experience Memorial Stadium
- [00:06:23.760]on game days in a big way.
- [00:06:25.260]Another group of students who get to experience game days
- [00:06:27.690]is our marching band.
- [00:06:28.740]And I know you're excited to see the band get out there
- [00:06:30.900]and do their performances.
- [00:06:32.310]Absolutely.
- [00:06:33.150]You know, the Cornhusker Marching Band,
- [00:06:34.800]the Pride of all Nebraska 300 members strong band,
- [00:06:37.935]you know when school is gearing up to start, right?
- [00:06:42.600]Because you hear on campus the band tryouts happening
- [00:06:47.070]which really start two weeks before the semester starts.
- [00:06:50.790]When students come in, they go through warmups
- [00:06:53.460]and preparation for tryouts
- [00:06:55.260]for the Cornhusker Marching Band.
- [00:06:56.940]Those happened then that week before class
- [00:06:59.490]and then just a little over a week ago,
- [00:07:01.740]the Friday before classes started, they had their exhibition
- [00:07:05.370]their band camp exhibition in Memorial Stadium.
- [00:07:08.070]And I've never seen anything like it, Greg,
- [00:07:11.370]the whole West stadium, lower deck all the way up was full.
- [00:07:16.230]Completely full for that exhibition of the band.
- [00:07:19.800]They've got a great year ahead,
- [00:07:21.600]I wish they could have all gone to Dublin.
- [00:07:23.820]You know, we weren't able to have that
- [00:07:26.010]as part of the package,
- [00:07:27.060]but we had a pep band of about 50 there
- [00:07:28.920]that was great to see, but really looking forward
- [00:07:31.530]to these students on the field this fall,
- [00:07:33.497]we have four drum majors that I wanted to kind of call out
- [00:07:37.399]for their leadership that you'll see this fall.
- [00:07:41.040]Matt Jackson from Ceresco,
- [00:07:43.440]Ian Maltas from here in Lincoln,
- [00:07:45.750]Steffani Nolda from North Platte
- [00:07:47.700]and Katherine Schmit from Lincoln
- [00:07:49.260]will be the ones with the big sticks coming down the field.
- [00:07:53.460]So looking forward to their performances
- [00:07:55.710]here in these next three home games and September.
- [00:07:58.320]Fantastic. Chancellor, always good to see you.
- [00:07:59.986]Thank you so much.
- [00:08:00.819]Let's have a good weekend.
- [00:08:02.070]Looking forward to it.
- [00:08:02.903]It's so great to be back in session
- [00:08:04.950]and, you know, I wasn't here last week for the first week
- [00:08:07.487]with the Dublin event, but seeing students engaged
- [00:08:11.010]at the level, it's unlike what we've seen
- [00:08:13.560]for the last three years, it's just absolutely super.
- [00:08:17.490]I can't tell you how good that feels
- [00:08:19.877]for us to be back and as always go Big Red.
- [00:08:23.190]There he is. Ronnie Green with us here on Sports Nightly.
- [00:08:25.440]Time to tell you to buckle up, put the phone down.
- [00:08:27.759]A reminder from the NDOT Highway Safety Office.
- [00:08:29.820]Back with more Sports Nightly next.
