- [00:00:00.210]Well, we're gonna be delighted to be joined each
- [00:00:02.340]and every football game day by the Chancellor
- [00:00:04.620]of the university of Nebraska Lincoln, Ronnie green.
- [00:00:06.870]And he's out at a function right now, outside the stadium
- [00:00:09.750]but we're able to make contact
- [00:00:11.010]with him and great to have him join us here.
- [00:00:12.930]This is a pretty cool way to start a football season.
- [00:00:15.360]Isn't it Chancellor?
- [00:00:16.410]Well, Greg, you know
- [00:00:17.763]it's a unique way to start a football season.
- [00:00:20.125]Hahaha
- [00:00:20.958]Only the second time that the Huskers have been
- [00:00:23.431]able to play outside of the United States.
- [00:00:26.220]Going back to that Tokyo game, quite a number of years ago
- [00:00:29.610]with the Huskers and to be here
- [00:00:31.230]in Dublin in this really kind
- [00:00:33.060]of special environment to kick off our football season
- [00:00:37.020]after kind of a long awaited, you know
- [00:00:39.300]they started talking about this almost three years ago
- [00:00:42.210]coming to play this game here.
- [00:00:44.190]And then we had the
- [00:00:45.630]the delay with the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
- [00:00:48.960]And it's just really good to be here.
- [00:00:51.120]A massive sea of red in Dublin
- [00:00:54.150]and on the Emerald Isle leading up to the game
- [00:00:57.540]you, it's a site to behold.
- [00:00:59.408]It really is.
- [00:01:00.241]Yeah. You mentioned the turnout.
- [00:01:01.680]We had a pep rally yesterday at a park here in Dublin
- [00:01:04.380]and over 5,000 Husker fans were in attendance for that.
- [00:01:08.310]You spoke to the group yesterday
- [00:01:10.740]they've come from all over the country
- [00:01:12.480]all over the world to watch their Huskers play.
- [00:01:14.850]And I know you've been over here for a little bit
- [00:01:16.830]of time taking in some sites and sounds what do you
- [00:01:19.770]what have you been able to see and what have you seen
- [00:01:21.300]from Husker fans around Ireland here this past week?
- [00:01:23.940]Well, we've got quite a lot of people that have been here
- [00:01:26.940]on organized tours for the best part
- [00:01:29.940]of all of this week through the Nebraska Alumni Association.
- [00:01:34.170]Over 2200 people that have been all over Ireland
- [00:01:39.240]as well as Scotland and some
- [00:01:41.190]over into Great Britain as well across the Irish Sea.
- [00:01:45.270]We were, my wife and I, Jane were part
- [00:01:47.850]of a group that started in Scotland on Sunday and Monday
- [00:01:51.750]and then came over to Dublin in the middle of the week.
- [00:01:55.980]Others have been in Galway and Cork
- [00:01:58.290]and Kerry and all over the country here in, in Ireland.
- [00:02:02.490]So we've been able to see quite a lot
- [00:02:04.200]and to learn a lot about the Irish culture.
- [00:02:06.780]And for me, the Scottish culture, I'm Scottish myself
- [00:02:09.450]and was able to visit my home plan ancestry
- [00:02:12.750]in Scotland as part of this trip as well.
- [00:02:15.600]It's just been a wonderful week.
- [00:02:18.150]I know we have a lot of people even after the game tonight
- [00:02:21.930]that will be staying here into next week
- [00:02:24.630]doing a similar set of tours around.
- [00:02:26.790]So a, just been a
- [00:02:28.410]a great exchange of learning and understanding culture.
- [00:02:31.770]You know, there's a lot of Irish in America
- [00:02:34.080]a lot of Irish in Nebraska as well.
- [00:02:37.110]And a lot of those relationships have been rekindled
- [00:02:40.500]if you will here with the Huskers in Ireland.
- [00:02:43.440]Word out there, chancellor is
- [00:02:44.790]that you did some clothes shopping while you're in Scotland.
- [00:02:47.730]Haha, Yeah. I, you know, Greg
- [00:02:51.210]I was telling you earlier in the week, I, you know, I
- [00:02:54.570]my mother is a, I'm a member direct descendant
- [00:02:57.900]of the Clan Colquhoun in Scotland.
- [00:03:00.360]We've known that for some time as part
- [00:03:02.190]of our family ancestry and you know, all the years I've been
- [00:03:05.730]in Scotland, a number of times on business
- [00:03:08.580]but I've never had the opportunity to go find her Clan home.
- [00:03:12.600]And Jane and I were able to do that
- [00:03:14.400]on Monday and it kindled kind of an interest
- [00:03:17.160]in me and being full Scott, you know, so I went
- [00:03:20.040]and got myself fitted in for a full kilt on Thursday this
- [00:03:24.960]this week and have it come into Nebraska later this fall.
- [00:03:29.133]And, and I have promised everyone
- [00:03:31.170]that I will be debuting that in full, when we're
- [00:03:34.710]at the NCAA volleyball finals here in the winter
- [00:03:38.820]and when we are in our bowl game
- [00:03:41.100]wherever that may be during holiday break
- [00:03:44.340]and I'm looking forward to that happen.
- [00:03:46.470]Oh, that's fantastic.
- [00:03:47.610]Getting busy with the chancellor
- [00:03:48.690]of the university of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:03:50.100]Ronnie Green here on Countdown to Kickoff
- [00:03:52.110]some of the Huskers out, throwing the football around
- [00:03:54.480]have not seen anybody in purple yet on the field.
- [00:03:57.270]I'm sorry I don't know
- [00:03:58.103]if the cats have arrived here at the stadium or not.
- [00:04:00.510]It's been an interesting experience.
- [00:04:02.040]Have you noticed any differences about a football atmosphere
- [00:04:05.190]for this particular game chancellor
- [00:04:06.930]than maybe any other ones that we've
- [00:04:09.000]we've seen down through the years?
- [00:04:10.363]Well, yeah.
- [00:04:11.230]Yeah. Well, sure.
- [00:04:12.540]I mean, we're playing in a soccer stadium, you know
- [00:04:14.923]or the Europeans like to say futbol, you know
- [00:04:18.990]we're playing in a soccer stadium here
- [00:04:20.640]at a Viva stadium today and it's a beautiful facility and
- [00:04:24.180]but you know, we're playing right on the
- [00:04:25.980]the lip of the Irish Sea, you know
- [00:04:27.900]Dublin sits right on the sea
- [00:04:29.910]looking out toward Great Britain.
- [00:04:31.530]That's a little bit different for us
- [00:04:33.630]than what we're accustomed to a little cooler here.
- [00:04:35.880]As I heard you mentioned earlier in the
- [00:04:38.160]in your comments down
- [00:04:39.270]in the sixties here, but beautiful, beautiful weather today.
- [00:04:44.430]And you know
- [00:04:45.270]there's gonna be a big crowd of Irish here today.
- [00:04:48.150]So there's, you know, we, we think we're gonna have 13
- [00:04:50.940]between 13 and 14,000 Nebraskans in the stands
- [00:04:54.480]you know, you know, upward upper 40,000 seat stadium.
- [00:04:58.470]So it's gonna be a very red stadium here today.
- [00:05:02.280]We think about five to one compared to purple
- [00:05:04.950]which we're really happy about, but there'll be a lot
- [00:05:07.560]of Irish in the stadiums and they're, they are excited
- [00:05:10.980]about this game everywhere you go in Dublin
- [00:05:13.500]they're talking about it.
- [00:05:14.910]They are, they become kind of students of American football
- [00:05:18.330]and know how competitive collegiate football is
- [00:05:21.480]in the US and they wanna be part of it.
- [00:05:23.700]So it's gonna be kind of an electric atmosphere
- [00:05:27.210]and looking forward to seeing our team really
- [00:05:30.330]kick the year off in a great way, hopefully
- [00:05:33.000]with a very great win and kind of set a signature for
- [00:05:37.080]for the weeks ahead and Husker football season.
- [00:05:39.780]Well chancellor, I appreciate the time today.
- [00:05:41.910]It's been an amazing week.
- [00:05:43.140]It's, it will be a week that the student athletes
- [00:05:45.720]on this football team, on the training staff, the managers,
- [00:05:48.300]all those folks, the band,
- [00:05:50.220]the spirit squad they're gonna remember for their lifetime
- [00:05:53.160]but they've also missed the first week of class.
- [00:05:55.170]As you got school started this past Monday
- [00:05:57.030]then I know you'll be anxious to get back on campus.
- [00:05:59.820]Not only to see all the students
- [00:06:01.050]everybody have a home football game next Saturday.
- [00:06:03.120]Yeah, well, I suspect that on Saturday morning
- [00:06:06.660]in Lincoln right now that there's gonna be quite
- [00:06:09.030]a tune-in of a little bit
- [00:06:10.770]of a game atmosphere there in, on campus today.
- [00:06:13.680]I'm suspecting that from our students and
- [00:06:16.110]and our community in Lincoln, certainly
- [00:06:17.910]but they are just finishing their first week of class
- [00:06:20.460]been a great first week of class.
- [00:06:22.140]As I understand it, that we are happy to get back underway
- [00:06:26.490]to be back in full we're really fully back
- [00:06:30.360]to pre COVID levels, being on campus together.
- [00:06:34.680]When we had freshman convocation on Friday
- [00:06:36.900]before we left last weekend to come this way
- [00:06:39.930]the freshman class was more engaged
- [00:06:42.330]than I can remember in years which was just
- [00:06:46.140]wonderful to see and feel that the desire to be there.
- [00:06:51.750]So we, we think we got a great year ahead
- [00:06:54.270]at the university of Nebraska.
- [00:06:55.770]Well, I know you have an event to get to
- [00:06:57.781]is it with the Prime Minister of Ireland?
- [00:07:00.300]Is that what I, someone told me?
- [00:07:02.190]Yeah. So the tailgate
- [00:07:04.080]that The Aer Lingus folks are in now is a
- [00:07:07.650]we've been through a number of very formal events here
- [00:07:10.470]a little more formal here than we're accustomed
- [00:07:12.960]to pre-game kind of activities in Nebraska.
- [00:07:16.020]So a very formal luncheon that we're engaged
- [00:07:18.930]in now honoring some very famous Irish families who
- [00:07:23.430]have had a lot to do with bringing the Aer Lingus Classic
- [00:07:26.940]into being, the Naughton family in particular
- [00:07:29.220]that we spent a lot of time
- [00:07:30.450]with here this week
- [00:07:33.090]and former Prime Minister Bertie Ahern
- [00:07:36.690]is here to present a pretty major award
- [00:07:40.380]to them here in a little bit that we're excited about.
- [00:07:43.170]So we're in here with a lot of business leaders
- [00:07:45.180]and a lot of leaders from the universities.
- [00:07:47.010]And so looking forward to getting back in there and
- [00:07:49.620]and experiencing that with (inaudible) as well.
- [00:07:52.770]You bet, thank you so much.
- [00:07:54.150]Enjoy your event.
- [00:07:54.983]Get in here and start cheering you and, and your wife
- [00:07:57.150]Jane we'll look forward to a great Husker win
- [00:07:59.010]and we'll see you in Lincoln next week.
- [00:08:00.240]You bet go Big Red.
- [00:08:01.460]Ronnie Green, Chancellor of the University
- [00:08:03.240]of Nebraska Lincoln joining us
- [00:08:04.350]he will each and every week during countdown to kickoff.
