[00:00:24.480]at the College of Law offers students a unique opportunity
[00:00:29.340]to learn how to be effective advocates for children
[00:00:32.040]in juvenile court who have experienced abuse, or neglect.
[00:00:35.220]Each year, we have third year law students
[00:00:37.470]who are learning the specialized skills they need
[00:00:39.990]to be highly effective advocates
[00:00:42.120]for children in juvenile court.
[00:00:43.770]They also are advocating
[00:00:45.360]for their child clients on a regular basis
[00:00:47.700]in the courthouse.
[00:00:48.870]Our judges tell us
[00:00:50.070]the Nebraska Law students are raising the bar
[00:00:53.040]of child representation in Lancaster County.

[00:01:00.840]Low income families are not only having limited choices
[00:01:03.813]when it comes to housing, but low income renters
[00:01:07.110]are being evicted from the homes
[00:01:08.940]that are very high frequency.
[00:01:11.280]The students involved in the program
[00:01:12.900]are getting an extreme amount
[00:01:14.610]of experiential learning opportunities
[00:01:17.060]in client interviewing as well as actually performing
[00:01:20.190]and conducting full trials.
[00:01:22.440]They're negotiating with landlords,
[00:01:24.150]and they're giving amazing outcomes for their tenants.
[00:01:27.060]The landlord gets paid, the tenant remains housed,
[00:01:30.420]the students get great experiential learning opportunities,
[00:01:33.600]and society wins too because we have less homelessness.

[00:01:39.003]that this is one of the most rewarding experiences
[00:01:41.250]that they've had in law school.

[00:01:48.237]We're learning how to prepare ourselves for our first job.

[00:01:53.460]you learn the book, but that's it.
[00:01:56.370]Here, we actually get to see what it's like to be a lawyer
[00:01:59.520]and how to put everything in the classroom to work.

[00:02:04.080]so that when I do graduate
[00:02:05.220]and start working with real clients,
[00:02:07.200]I'm more prepared and kind of a step ahead
[00:02:09.150]of where I would be otherwise.

[00:02:12.900]how I should form my business.
[00:02:14.430]I'm creating the operating agreements, employee agreements,
[00:02:18.570]non-disclosure agreements, all that type of stuff,
[00:02:21.090]basically the legal foundation of our business
[00:02:23.130]to help out with everything, so it's been a great success.

[00:02:48.300]for us to come together, collaborate as a team

[00:02:53.340]and have really productive client meetings in this new,
[00:02:56.580]beautiful space, so really excited about it.
