- [00:00:04.050]Well, this is a really exciting time of year on campus.
- [00:00:07.080]What are some specific things that UNL PD does to ensure safety of our community?
- [00:00:12.750]We think it's important to establish those relationships with the campus community, because from a
- [00:00:18.000]safety standpoint, collectively, we're a lot stronger as a total unit in order to try to keep the campus
- [00:00:24.510]safe.
- [00:00:25.440]We offer Husker Safe Walks, for those that feel unsafe walking at night.
- [00:00:32.009]We also offer property registration services.
- [00:00:36.030]Sue, you're a nationally recognized expert in bullying prevention.
- [00:00:40.290]What are some tips and advice that you would give to our community?
- [00:00:45.330]Yeah, so it seems simple, but what I would say is to be kind in your actions and kind in your words.
- [00:00:50.000]And so then if students are, you know, kind and nice toward each other than things like bullying are less
- [00:00:55.760]likely to occur.
- [00:00:57.350]But when students say things that might be mean, or, you know, rude or, you know, interpreted a certain way,
- [00:01:03.740]it's important to have dialogue.
- [00:01:05.240]And it's important to have a conversation about how you're feeling about something.
- [00:01:09.680]If your feelings are hurt, it's better to talk about it, than to say try to retaliate, or gossip or things
- [00:01:15.650]like that.
- [00:01:16.430]I also say it's really important to just hang out with your friends and to meet new people.
- [00:01:21.110]And so having, you know, a good friend network and a support network is really important.
- [00:01:26.330]Just take care of one another.
- [00:01:27.590]Yeah, absolutely.
- [00:01:28.970]How simple is that.
- [00:01:29.840]How simple is that.
- [00:01:31.050]Just take care of one another.
- [00:01:33.090]So as our students come back to campus, what's one top of thought piece of advice that you would give them?
- [00:01:39.480]Be aware of their surroundings.
- [00:01:41.250]Be attentive.
- [00:01:42.720]Look out for each other.
- [00:01:44.160]Be an active bystander.
- [00:01:45.600]If you see something, say something.
- [00:01:47.490]And then also to say it to have kind of a buddy or a friend or, you know, check in system.
- [00:01:52.170]Maybe a text message, you know, check in system just to let people know that you got home safe, or back to your
- [00:01:58.710]dorm or apartment safely.
- [00:02:00.360]And just have, you know, people that you communicate with, to let them know where you are.
- [00:02:05.250]Oh, that's great.
- [00:02:06.000]And let's just go out there and have a great, fruitful, productive academic year for all of this community.
- [00:02:12.660]We're looking so forward to this year.
