- [00:00:16.110]Hi, my name is Clare Umutoni
- [00:00:18.000]and I am a rising senior at UNL.
- [00:00:21.270]I'm majoring in integrated science
- [00:00:23.460]and my concentration areas
- [00:00:25.260]is community development and regional planning.
- [00:00:27.660]This summer, I've been working with the
- [00:00:30.096]Rutgers Parade in Nebraska Leadership
- [00:00:32.610]and I have had a chance to work on different projects
- [00:00:35.790]that include creating a database
- [00:00:38.730]for existing community leadership programs
- [00:00:41.490]across the country.
- [00:00:43.728]I also worked on literature reviews
- [00:00:46.980]on leadership transition
- [00:00:48.570]and the purpose for that was to help new community leaders
- [00:00:52.770]settle into their new roles
- [00:00:54.475]and to also help the older community leaders
- [00:00:58.320]help mentor and support younger community members
- [00:01:03.600]for future positions like those.
- [00:01:05.910]And it was a great experience really
- [00:01:08.850]working on those projects
- [00:01:10.110]and I really learned a lot.
- [00:01:12.690]This summer,
- [00:01:13.523]Claire helped our community leadership development team
- [00:01:16.380]take a look at topics that have been brought forward
- [00:01:18.720]by communities as we're working with them
- [00:01:21.000]to develop community leadership development programs
- [00:01:23.460]and opportunities right there in their towns and villages.
- [00:01:27.360]So we had a number of topics that have been brought forward,
- [00:01:30.060]questions that communities are asking,
- [00:01:32.340]and what they're looking for when it comes
- [00:01:34.110]to the next gen, developing that next generation
- [00:01:36.630]of community leader.
- [00:01:38.079]For rural communities,
- [00:01:39.600]those leaders are the folks
- [00:01:40.920]that are making things happen in their communities
- [00:01:43.680]and so we need to help support
- [00:01:45.600]and provide them with the resources
- [00:01:47.190]and knowledge that they they need to be effective leaders.
- [00:01:50.100]An environment that's more diverse,
- [00:01:52.230]more economically diverse than we've seen in generations.
- [00:01:55.020]And so that is really what this research
- [00:01:57.150]that Claire was able to conduct over the summer
- [00:01:59.430]really helped us dig into and will help guide our work
- [00:02:02.550]as we move forward in developing programming
- [00:02:04.950]and opportunities for our rural communities
- [00:02:07.470]across the state of Nebraska.
- [00:02:10.333](soft upbeat music)
- [00:02:16.170]This is my second time being a rural fellow intern.
- [00:02:19.440]Last time I was in a community
- [00:02:21.750]and this time I was working remotely.
- [00:02:24.840]What I've learned is to manage my time
- [00:02:27.180]and to be more accountable,
- [00:02:29.790]and to manage and plan for my projects
- [00:02:32.520]in a way that is more responsible
- [00:02:34.680]not having an expectation of anyone
- [00:02:36.960]supervising what I'm doing.
- [00:02:39.120]And I've improved my research skills
- [00:02:43.290]and these are things that I hope to take
- [00:02:45.726]into my future as a student and also a professional.
- [00:02:50.826]On the side of the project,
- [00:02:52.650]I have learned about the important aspects
- [00:02:55.020]of community leadership development.
- [00:02:57.823]Things like youth engagement,
- [00:02:59.790]like out of learners approaches
- [00:03:02.910]these are things that I hope
- [00:03:04.050]to take into my career as a community developer
- [00:03:07.800]and be able to apply the research
- [00:03:10.770]and everything that I've learned
- [00:03:12.090]to make sure that the communities that I'm leading
- [00:03:14.460]are growing and thriving.
- [00:03:16.050]For me, this experience has really heightened my listening
- [00:03:19.860]skills and the need to pay attention
- [00:03:22.290]to what others are saying.
- [00:03:23.790]So Claire and I were able to come together
- [00:03:25.620]very early on in the academy experience
- [00:03:28.080]and have candid and open conversations
- [00:03:30.750]about what Claire was expecting from the summer,
- [00:03:32.700]what I was expecting from the summer,
- [00:03:34.680]how we respond to feedback,
- [00:03:36.367]just an array of topics.
- [00:03:38.580]And it's really helped set a foundation
- [00:03:40.410]for us to have a great conversation,
- [00:03:42.690]a great collaboration over the summer
- [00:03:44.790]to be able to develop an experience
- [00:03:46.590]that meets Claire's needs as well as my needs,
- [00:03:48.780]and the needs of our project to be able to move forward.
- [00:03:52.110]And so those are pieces that I will be able to carry
- [00:03:55.620]with me as I work back in communities across rural Nebraska.
- [00:03:59.378]Just that that heightened awareness of listening
- [00:04:02.079]and understanding and meeting people where they are.
- [00:04:05.280]That is so fundamental to developing inclusive leadership
- [00:04:09.240]in our counties, and communities, and me personally as well.
- [00:04:13.244](soft upbeat music)
