- [00:00:01.217]I'm here today with
- [00:00:02.252]the dean of the College of
- [00:00:03.403]Education and Human Sciences,
- [00:00:05.622]Dr. Sherri Jones.
- [00:00:06.990]Welcome, Sherri.
- [00:00:08.041]Thank you.
- [00:00:08.641]Good to be with you.
- [00:00:09.843]Yeah, thanks for joining me
- [00:00:11.061]for a little conversation
- [00:00:12.362]about DEI, which stands
- [00:00:14.364]for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
- [00:00:16.649]Can you talk a little bit
- [00:00:17.667]about why DEI matters to you
- [00:00:20.303]and why you created my position?
- [00:00:22.222]The Associate Dean for DEI?
- [00:00:25.291]Well, I come from a background
- [00:00:27.077]that has worked
- [00:00:28.344]with a variety of individuals,
- [00:00:30.447]with special needs.
- [00:00:32.065]And I have long wanted
- [00:00:35.185]to have community
- [00:00:37.220]where everyone can achieve
- [00:00:38.722]their maximum potential.
- [00:00:40.023]And when you think about all
- [00:00:41.941]the kinds of people that we engage with
- [00:00:44.728]in a community,
- [00:00:45.929]all the different identities,
- [00:00:47.597]voices, perspectives,
- [00:00:49.733]it's really important to me
- [00:00:51.451]that everybody can succeed
- [00:00:54.087]and everybody can
- [00:00:55.338]achieve their maximum potential
- [00:00:57.040]and contribute to the community
- [00:00:58.825]in meaningful and constructive ways.
- [00:01:00.810]And that's why diversity
- [00:01:02.545]is important to me.
- [00:01:04.047]And I created
- [00:01:05.632]the role of Associate Dean
- [00:01:07.350]for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
- [00:01:09.769]because the college
- [00:01:11.087]has work to do in this area
- [00:01:13.206]as well as the campus.
- [00:01:15.391]And I wanted to have an expert
- [00:01:18.678]in DEI be able to help the college
- [00:01:21.931]in its work in this space
- [00:01:24.234]and be a liaison to the campus.
- [00:01:27.470]So that how
- [00:01:28.555]we moved forward as a college
- [00:01:30.440]could also inform the campus
- [00:01:32.425]and what campus was working on
- [00:01:34.310]could inform the college.
- [00:01:36.079]Thank you.
- [00:01:36.679]And one of the things I appreciate
- [00:01:38.548]about working in the college is
- [00:01:39.899]that we are
- [00:01:42.869]in some
- [00:01:43.369]ways a very human scale college.
- [00:01:46.556]We're about the human sciences
- [00:01:48.208]and education,
- [00:01:48.992]and that's a very people
- [00:01:50.093]first type of mission.
- [00:01:52.262]Students, as you were mentioning,
- [00:01:53.613]students and staff
- [00:01:54.564]and faculty are asking
- [00:01:55.915]for more support
- [00:01:57.717]to get better at doing
- [00:01:59.569]diversity related work.
- [00:02:01.371]And I think that's an
- [00:02:02.672]awesome opportunity
- [00:02:03.957]because we're not forcing anybody
- [00:02:05.692]to attend mandatory trainings,
- [00:02:07.827]but we are responding
- [00:02:09.779]to the needs that
- [00:02:12.115]our community members are expressing.
- [00:02:14.400]And so I think that's a different style
- [00:02:16.436]of leadership from your office
- [00:02:17.971]and my office working under you.
- [00:02:19.889]Yeah. I'm glad you mention that, John.
- [00:02:22.041]So a few things that we have done
- [00:02:24.777]is added some training modules
- [00:02:27.947]to some of our ongoing
- [00:02:30.500]availability of information.
- [00:02:33.686]And we have also
- [00:02:35.171]created some trainings
- [00:02:36.890]that, as you mentioned,
- [00:02:38.074]are voluntary.
- [00:02:39.359]But a lot of people have attended
- [00:02:41.311]because of their interest
- [00:02:43.012]in learning
- [00:02:43.763]and growing themselves
- [00:02:45.596]around DEI.
- [00:02:47.000]So we've tried to work
- [00:02:48.768]within our existing programing
- [00:02:51.321]but also create
- [00:02:53.523]new opportunities
- [00:02:54.858]that people can take advantage of.
- [00:02:57.210]And from my vantage point,
- [00:02:58.711]as the Associate Dean for DEI,
- [00:03:00.213]it seems like people are really receptive
- [00:03:03.349]that this isn't
- [00:03:04.067]being shoved down their throats,
- [00:03:05.668]but that
- [00:03:06.319]they get a little taste of it.
- [00:03:07.670]It's like. Oh,
- [00:03:08.154]this is the conversation
- [00:03:09.289]I've been waiting to have for years.
- [00:03:11.541]And so I sort of
- [00:03:12.625]see some momentum building
- [00:03:14.060]and some enthusiasm
- [00:03:15.678]that's really kind of refreshing.
- [00:03:17.096]So I'm glad to be on the team
- [00:03:19.232]and having these kinds of
- [00:03:20.450]conversations in our college.
