- [00:00:01.368]This is our first video
- [00:00:03.019]in the series
- [00:00:03.603]that we're calling
- [00:00:04.204]Behind the Scenes
- [00:00:05.305]in CEHS.
- [00:00:06.806]And today,
- [00:00:07.257]I have the pleasure of talking
- [00:00:08.358]with our associate dean
- [00:00:09.693]Student Success,
- [00:00:10.794]my friend and colleague,
- [00:00:11.778]Dr. Paul Springer.
- [00:00:13.129]The reason I wanted to talk with you
- [00:00:15.048]specifically about diversity, equity
- [00:00:17.567]and inclusion
- [00:00:18.535]is because I feel like
- [00:00:19.853]sometimes people
- [00:00:20.820]don't really know
- [00:00:21.538]all the good stuff that's happening
- [00:00:22.939]behind the scenes,
- [00:00:24.324]which is where I got the idea
- [00:00:25.492]for this behind the scenes series.
- [00:00:27.594]So if you could first start off
- [00:00:28.978]telling us what
- [00:00:29.763]your role is in the college
- [00:00:31.798]and why you enjoy working
- [00:00:33.383]in CEHS.
- [00:00:34.768]So what this really means is
- [00:00:36.136]I advocate for our
- [00:00:37.504]students experiences,
- [00:00:38.788]which includes
- [00:00:39.572]part of DEI kind of issues
- [00:00:41.758]in the college.
- [00:00:42.809]I love our college.
- [00:00:44.310]I love working with people
- [00:00:45.595]like you, John,
- [00:00:46.713]and those who are passionate
- [00:00:48.331]about improving the experiences
- [00:00:50.333]of our students
- [00:00:51.201]and of our faculty and staff.
- [00:00:53.119]We have a lot of
- [00:00:53.837]like minded people in the college
- [00:00:55.588]who really want to make a difference.
- [00:00:57.707]So thinking specifically
- [00:00:59.759]about the diversity in
- [00:01:01.161]our college community,
- [00:01:03.513]whose voices in particular
- [00:01:04.948]do you think we need
- [00:01:05.765]to hear more from?
- [00:01:07.133]Yeah, you know, I think in general,
- [00:01:08.818]we have a student advisory board,
- [00:01:10.587]so we do hear from students
- [00:01:12.589]at the college level.
- [00:01:13.973]But I really feel
- [00:01:15.208]that the voices
- [00:01:16.459]that we need to elevate
- [00:01:17.477]more of the voices
- [00:01:18.595]of our minoritized students
- [00:01:20.630]or BIPOC students,
- [00:01:22.699]as well as our international students.
- [00:01:25.251]And I think this is really important
- [00:01:26.786]because we need
- [00:01:27.720]to really better understand
- [00:01:29.005]their experiences,
- [00:01:30.390]their sense of belonging
- [00:01:32.125]and ways
- [00:01:32.759]that we as a college
- [00:01:34.010]can better address their needs.
- [00:01:36.212]And I know that, you know,
- [00:01:38.281]John, you and I, we've started our first
- [00:01:41.451]DEI Undergraduate Group
- [00:01:45.021]Advisory Committee.
- [00:01:46.222]And so that's something really important
- [00:01:47.941]that I know
- [00:01:48.391]we're both passionate about is
- [00:01:49.709]how do we elevate their voices?
- [00:01:51.478]And so we've started some work
- [00:01:53.813]in that area.
- [00:01:55.014]It's just the beginning,
- [00:01:55.949]but I'm really excited about it.
- [00:01:57.917]Yeah, I'm excited too.
- [00:01:59.035]It's a pretty phenomenal
- [00:02:00.236]group of students
- [00:02:01.371]as we're getting to know them.
- [00:02:04.224]So people watching this
- [00:02:05.458]probably need to know
- [00:02:06.509]all of these students
- [00:02:07.527]were nominated by a staff
- [00:02:09.929]or faculty member
- [00:02:11.214]or possibly another student
- [00:02:13.049]because they thought
- [00:02:14.567]they could bring a good voice
- [00:02:17.003]and perspective
- [00:02:18.271]for underrepresented groups
- [00:02:20.657]in our college.
- [00:02:22.258]And I know you and I have done
- [00:02:23.693]some listening
- [00:02:24.377]sessions, too,
- [00:02:25.228]before we convened the advisory board,
- [00:02:29.182]I thought it was quite moving at times,
- [00:02:31.467]listening to some of the stories
- [00:02:33.203]that students
- [00:02:34.521]carry with them close to their heart
- [00:02:36.422]and some of them are a little sad
- [00:02:38.491]because they talk about adversity
- [00:02:40.610]or challenges that they face on campus
- [00:02:42.962]or in their personal lives.
- [00:02:45.048]How have you found those
- [00:02:46.166]listening sessions
- [00:02:47.250]and are they valuable
- [00:02:48.685]or should we keep doing them?
- [00:02:50.520]You know, I've learned
- [00:02:52.438]that every student is struggling
- [00:02:55.008]our minoritized students are struggling
- [00:02:57.093]in different ways.
- [00:02:58.761]For example, their sense of belonging
- [00:03:01.231]or whether they feel like
- [00:03:03.533]they can talk in class
- [00:03:05.668]or share their experiences.
- [00:03:07.921]Some of the frustrations
- [00:03:09.289]have oftentimes
- [00:03:10.039]being put in places
- [00:03:11.090]where they are expected
- [00:03:12.659]to speak on behalf
- [00:03:13.943]of their entire race or ethnicity.
- [00:03:17.847]You know, I've learned a lot
- [00:03:19.165]about how our minoritized students
- [00:03:21.684]are feeling
- [00:03:22.952]and how they desperately
- [00:03:24.537]want to have a voice at the table
- [00:03:27.657]and how we
- [00:03:28.741]we need to do a better job
- [00:03:30.293]listening to our students and making sure
- [00:03:33.680]that we're creating an environment
- [00:03:35.782]that's inclusive.
- [00:03:37.217]So thank you.
- [00:03:37.850]Thanks for spending some time
- [00:03:39.352]sitting down and chatting about DEI and
- [00:03:42.589]look forward to continue
- [00:03:44.157]working together
- [00:03:44.908]to serve students.
