- [00:00:10.080]Hi, my name is Jaci,
- [00:00:11.670]and I'm part of the Nebraska Extension Early Childhood team.
- [00:00:15.210]Welcome to the CHIME program,
- [00:00:16.920]Cultivating Healthy Intentional Mindful Educators.
- [00:00:20.790]CHIME is a mindfulness program
- [00:00:22.650]for early childhood educators,
- [00:00:24.660]including teachers, home visitors, and other staff
- [00:00:28.320]who care for and teach young children.
- [00:00:30.780]CHIME uses Dr. Amy Saltzman's definition of mindfulness.
- [00:00:34.950]Mindfulness is practice of paying attention here and now
- [00:00:39.060]with kindness and curiosity,
- [00:00:41.160]so we can change our behavior.
- [00:00:43.620]During the eight-week program,
- [00:00:45.180]our team works with early childhood educators
- [00:00:47.640]to support their wellbeing and offer strategies
- [00:00:50.400]to promote mindfulness and compassion,
- [00:00:52.710]both for themselves and the children in their care.
- [00:00:55.890]Participants learn about different aspects of mindfulness,
- [00:00:59.520]compassion, and social-emotional learning,
- [00:01:02.820]and practice mindfulness in their community,
- [00:01:05.760]which may include other teachers, children, and families.
- [00:01:10.740]We are excited for you to join us
- [00:01:12.960]in learning about mindfulness and compassion practices
- [00:01:15.960]to support your child's social-emotional health.
- [00:01:18.990]But first, I'd like to share some information
- [00:01:21.600]about how our brains work and respond during tough moments.
- [00:01:25.530]It's important to understand a little bit
- [00:01:27.120]about brain development
- [00:01:28.470]when we talk about mindfulness
- [00:01:30.840]because when you know what's going on in your brain,
- [00:01:33.840]you can more easily change your response.
- [00:01:36.240]Your brain is in learning mode
- [00:01:38.250]when you are happy and relaxed.
- [00:01:40.440]For children and adults,
- [00:01:41.820]it's best to focus on learning and practicing strategies
- [00:01:44.760]when we are not upset or overwhelmed,
- [00:01:47.430]so later, we can use these strategies
- [00:01:49.860]when we experience difficult feelings or situations.
- [00:01:53.250]You'll notice during playtime,
- [00:01:55.110]when your child is engaged and having fun,
- [00:01:57.630]they're typically more flexible, adaptable,
- [00:02:00.480]and open to learning.
- [00:02:01.980]However, if something happens
- [00:02:03.780]to make your child feel unsafe or frustrated,
- [00:02:06.720]you may see them start to cry, run and hide, hit,
- [00:02:10.350]or engage in another type of challenging behavior.
- [00:02:13.350]This is not a time for teaching.
- [00:02:15.330]Instead, use this time to connect with your child.
- [00:02:19.530]Dr. Dan Siegel uses a simple demonstration
- [00:02:22.320]to help us better understand what happens in the brain.
- [00:02:25.560]Let's try it together.
- [00:02:27.270]Hold up your arm,
- [00:02:28.470]tuck your thumb in, and fold your fingers over your thumb.
- [00:02:32.190]Imagine this is what your brain looks like
- [00:02:34.170]inside of your skull.
- [00:02:35.760]Your wrist represents your spinal cord
- [00:02:37.890]and the palm of your hand
- [00:02:38.970]can be thought of as your brain stem.
- [00:02:41.040]This part of your brain is responsible
- [00:02:42.900]for all of the things your body does automatically,
- [00:02:45.600]like breathing, blinking, and making your heartbeat.
- [00:02:48.930]Your thumb represents the limbic system,
- [00:02:51.570]which works with the brain stem
- [00:02:53.220]to help you regulate your emotions
- [00:02:55.020]and drives the fight, flight, or freeze response.
- [00:02:58.440]Your fingers folded over represent the prefrontal cortex.
- [00:03:02.430]This part of your brain allows you to think, reason,
- [00:03:05.490]and regulate your responses.
- [00:03:07.800]When you feel stressed or triggered,
- [00:03:09.840]you may have a harder time using this part of your brain.
- [00:03:12.990]You can visualize this by opening up your fingers.
- [00:03:15.900]We call this flipping our lids.
- [00:03:18.030]When you or your child are in this stage,
- [00:03:20.760]the top part of your brain,
- [00:03:22.290]the part that's responsible
- [00:03:23.460]for learning and decision-making,
- [00:03:25.410]is very far away from the lower part of your brain.
- [00:03:28.800]See that?
- [00:03:30.210]They are unable to work together.
- [00:03:32.190]When the different parts of your child's brain
- [00:03:34.110]are working together,
- [00:03:36.390]they are happy and playful.
- [00:03:38.430]This is a great time to teach them a new skill
- [00:03:41.130]or practice one they have been learning.
- [00:03:43.200]When your child is feeling mad or scared,
- [00:03:46.230]they have flipped their lids.
- [00:03:48.600]Remember, this is a time for connection
- [00:03:50.880]rather than teaching.
- [00:03:52.200]When we practice mindfulness
- [00:03:53.820]through strategies like deep breathing,
- [00:03:56.310]movement, and using compassion and gratitude,
- [00:03:59.520]we can focus our attention
- [00:04:01.710]and see what is happening around us more clearly.
- [00:04:04.920]This can help your child to slow down,
- [00:04:07.500]feel their breath, and then move to problem-solving.
- [00:04:10.890]Each week, during the CHIME program,
- [00:04:12.930]you'll have a chance to learn simple mindfulness activities
- [00:04:16.020]you can do with your child to help them grow
- [00:04:18.570]and strengthen their social-emotional skills.
- [00:04:21.090]We are excited for you to learn these practices,
- [00:04:24.000]and we hope you enjoy learning about mindfulness
- [00:04:26.400]alongside your child and their teachers.
