- [00:00:07.179](police radio chatter)
- [00:00:18.287]Hi boys and girls.
- [00:00:19.860]My name is Tristan Cope and I work
- [00:00:22.350]for K State Research and Extension all the way in Kansas.
- [00:00:27.480]I heard that you were learning
- [00:00:29.080]about law enforcement officers.
- [00:00:31.600]So I came to my local Sheriff's office
- [00:00:34.920]to give you a tour!
- [00:00:37.030]So come on, let's go inside and check it out.
- [00:00:40.073](upbeat music)
- [00:00:48.780]Hi boys and girls.
- [00:00:49.890]I am here at the Sheriff's office.
- [00:00:52.010]And with me today is Sarah.
- [00:00:54.020]Sarah's in charge of the office here.
- [00:00:57.460]Hi boys and girls.
- [00:00:58.460]We'd like to welcome you
- [00:00:59.560]to the Marion County Sheriff's office.
- [00:01:01.650]And with me today, I have our Sheriff of Marion County.
- [00:01:06.470]The sheriff is he's kind of the boss
- [00:01:10.280]of everyone that works here.
- [00:01:12.510]He's kind of the-
- [00:01:14.210]he's kind of like a police chief, but in a bigger setting
- [00:01:17.860]How cool we're so excited to be here today?
- [00:01:21.210]Well, we're so glad to have you here.
- [00:01:22.890]It's exciting.
- [00:01:24.562]So, one thing that I know that happens
- [00:01:27.170]is when you call a special number,
- [00:01:29.110]you get to talk to somebody.
- [00:01:31.020]Can you show us what we do there?
- [00:01:33.000]Sure, come on with us and we'll show you what we have.
- [00:01:37.300]This is the dispatch office
- [00:01:38.920]and this is where if someone has an emergency, they call.
- [00:01:42.670]And this is the girls that answer the phone.
- [00:01:45.120]And here we have Linda.
- [00:01:46.600]And she's gonna talk a little bit
- [00:01:48.010]about what goes on in dispatch.
- [00:01:50.434]Hi, My name's Linda Klenda,
- [00:01:52.180]and I'm over the dispatch center here.
- [00:01:55.050]And this is where you would call
- [00:01:57.030]if you were to call 9-1-1.
- [00:01:59.650]We have two dispatchers on 24 7.
- [00:02:04.550]Well we cover all Marion county law enforcement, fire, EMS
- [00:02:12.480]all kinds of stuff that we do.
- [00:02:15.320]Let's see, we monitor the jail.
- [00:02:17.560]You can see that up there.
- [00:02:19.720]How cool, Linda!
- [00:02:20.810]So you said you have different monitors here
- [00:02:22.770]on the screen and it monitors the jail.
- [00:02:25.430]And then you have when calls come in
- [00:02:27.190]and then you can help them whenever somebody calls
- [00:02:29.500]and needs help.
- [00:02:30.333]Yeah, absolutely.
- [00:02:31.166]And we also, well, not so much recent, but in the
- [00:02:33.850]last year we started EMD it's Emergency Medical Dispatch.
- [00:02:38.500]And so if you call in, we can walk everybody-
- [00:02:41.400]walk you through the steps.
- [00:02:43.530]If you're having a heart attack we can do CPR,
- [00:02:46.250]anything like that.
- [00:02:48.810]That is so fun.
- [00:02:49.770]There's lots of important information.
- [00:02:51.590]Did you guys know that?
- [00:02:53.040]Did you know that if you call that special number
- [00:02:55.440]that you get to talk to somebody?
- [00:02:57.540]And they're going to help you
- [00:02:59.220]or help whoever calls that number.
- [00:03:01.510]Yeah. And, and a good idea when to call, if you
- [00:03:04.620]have an emergency would be maybe a fire,
- [00:03:07.080]If somebody is hurt.
- [00:03:08.870]Good idea is not to call is if a cat is in the tree,
- [00:03:12.710]you could probably just call our administrative line,
- [00:03:14.590]which is just a regular basic phone number.
- [00:03:16.480]It's not 9-1-1.
- [00:03:19.825]So if you accidentally call 9-1-1, stay on the phone
- [00:03:23.450]with us because otherwise we're gonna have to call you back
- [00:03:26.150]cause we wanna make sure there really isn't an
- [00:03:27.710]emergency.
- [00:03:28.543]So 9-1-1 is really for emergencies only.
- [00:03:32.360]That's so important.
- [00:03:33.860]We only call 9-1-1, which is that special number.
- [00:03:36.800]If there's a true emergency, but if you do happen to
- [00:03:40.040]make an accident, make sure you stay on that phone line
- [00:03:43.170]so they can still help you and make sure that you don't
- [00:03:45.630]need an officer's help.
- [00:03:47.540]Right.
- [00:03:49.610]So thank you ladies so much for showing us this room.
- [00:03:52.490]It's so important when we remember
- [00:03:54.140]to call that special number
- [00:03:56.030]that there is somebody here that can help us
- [00:03:58.310]and that can send help our way.
- [00:04:00.400]And don't be afraid to call 9-1-1
- [00:04:02.040]If it's an emergency
- [00:04:06.250]Sarah, that was so cool!
- [00:04:07.983]Yes, it was.
- [00:04:09.227]9-1-1 is very important if there is an emergency.
- [00:04:13.490]It is and I didn't know what the room looked like.
- [00:04:16.470]That was so cool to see it.
- [00:04:17.303]Do you think that we can meet a deputy now?
- [00:04:21.730]Yes. We actually have Deputy Aaron
- [00:04:25.520]and Deputy Aaron works with young kids.
- [00:04:29.200]That is so cool!
- [00:04:30.033]Yes, he goes into the schools
- [00:04:31.870]and he does programs about staying safe,
- [00:04:35.957]being a good leader in your schools,
- [00:04:40.006]Making good choices. Making good choices.
- [00:04:42.485]Absolutely, so Deputy Aaron would love to visit
- [00:04:44.040]with you guys.
- [00:04:44.873]Come on and I'll have you meet him.
- [00:04:50.240]Hi boys and girls.
- [00:04:51.250]We would like you to meet deputy Aaron.
- [00:04:53.575]He's the one that we were talking about that works with kids
- [00:04:56.095]and deputy Aaron would kind of like to talk to you
- [00:04:58.830]about what the officers here do,
- [00:05:01.670]and also kind of give you a tour.
- [00:05:04.010]I think with some neat stuff coming up here pretty soon.
- [00:05:07.700]Thank you Sarah!
- [00:05:09.050]Thank you.
- [00:05:09.883]You're welcome.
- [00:05:12.226]Hi, officer Aaron.
- [00:05:13.480]Hi Tristan, how are you?
- [00:05:14.880]I am good, how are you today?
- [00:05:16.506]I'm good.
- [00:05:17.339]Good, So I heard some really cool things so far.
- [00:05:21.335]Okay.
- [00:05:22.168]We got to meet the sheriff.
- [00:05:23.314]Oh good.
- [00:05:24.147]And we got to talk and meet
- [00:05:25.750]and see the whole dispatch room.
- [00:05:27.960]And we learned the importance of calling 9-1-1.
- [00:05:30.480]Yes. That's they have a number to call if you're
- [00:05:32.554]if you're not safe and you need to be safe.
- [00:05:34.950]Yep.
- [00:05:35.883]That's so cool.
- [00:05:36.716]So, do you think that you can tell us
- [00:05:38.010]a few more things about being a deputy?
- [00:05:40.407]Yeah.
- [00:05:41.610]So, as a deputy, sometimes I'm out directing traffic
- [00:05:45.670]if there's an accident, sometimes I'm out there
- [00:05:48.960]keeping people safe, and sometimes I'm just out
- [00:05:53.020]there all the time, always watching the roads
- [00:05:55.040]and helping people stay safe, kids and adults.
- [00:05:58.335]Yes. So it's so important
- [00:06:00.380]that our officers are there to keep you guys safe.
- [00:06:03.530]Now I saw some pretty cool things
- [00:06:05.723]when I was coming into your building.
- [00:06:08.180]They were big and these ones were white
- [00:06:11.310]and they had red and blue lights up top.
- [00:06:13.740]Oh yeah.
- [00:06:14.695]Probably talking about my car.
- [00:06:16.015]Yes.
- [00:06:17.023]Yep, those are pretty exciting.
- [00:06:18.404]Do you think that we could get a chance to see your car?
- [00:06:21.250]We sure can.
- [00:06:22.083]Yep. Won't you come out and see my car!
- [00:06:23.975]Wonderful!
- [00:06:24.808](both) Yes, okay well let's go!
- [00:06:28.135](police radio chatter followed by siren)
- [00:06:38.727]Hey, officer Aaron.
- [00:06:39.740]Hi, Tristan!
- [00:06:40.573]I see your vehicle is right here.
- [00:06:42.304]Yep.
- [00:06:43.137]Can you tell me a little bit about your vehicle?
- [00:06:44.670]Well, yeah, this is my patrol vehicle.
- [00:06:48.140]I use it to keep people safe.
- [00:06:50.306]It helps me watch for people being unsafe on the roads.
- [00:06:54.650]And also if somebody's not safe and I need to get
- [00:06:56.650]to them in a hurry, it helps me get there in a hurry.
- [00:06:58.650]So what are the things that help get you there in a hurry?
- [00:07:01.480]What do you have to do with your vehicle?
- [00:07:03.400]Well, I have my, I have to have my lights on
- [00:07:05.550]so that other cars can see me.
- [00:07:07.270]And then, so they know
- [00:07:08.270]that I'm coming and I also have a siren.
- [00:07:10.780]Would you like to see the lights and hear the siren?
- [00:07:13.770]Yes. I think we would love to.
- [00:07:15.480]Okay. Let's turn that on.
- [00:07:17.400]All right, while Officer Aaron's turning that on,
- [00:07:20.130]I want you to watch on top
- [00:07:22.350]and it might be a little loud.
- [00:07:23.930]So if you want to close your ears, you sure can.
- [00:07:28.290]Ready?
- [00:07:30.370]Whoa!
- [00:07:31.240]Look at those lights.
- [00:07:33.160]They're flashing blue and red (siren blaring)
- [00:07:35.700]and you hear the siren.
- [00:07:37.768](siren blaring)
- [00:07:39.330]And that means that we need to stop and watch and listen.
- [00:07:44.220]because there might be an emergency
- [00:07:46.210]or somebody is needing help.
- [00:07:49.330]Yep, I also have a radio that helps me communicate
- [00:07:51.610]with the girls you saw earlier, the dispatch.
- [00:07:53.690]They help me, give me information so
- [00:07:55.440]that I know what's going on and how to keep everybody safe.
- [00:07:59.080]So they would push that button and he would talk
- [00:08:00.857]into the radio or sometimes they would talk to him.
- [00:08:04.240]So he knows where to go and who to help.
- [00:08:09.253]128 radio, 10-17 check in.
- [00:08:14.010]Just like that,
- [00:08:14.870]he uses his radio to check and to help people.
- [00:08:18.910]All right, boys and girls,
- [00:08:20.120]Officer Aaron grabbed his best for us.
- [00:08:22.780]Sometimes just like when firefighters
- [00:08:24.720]have different uniforms on or different gear on.
- [00:08:27.640]So officer Aaron, can you tell us a little bit
- [00:08:29.790]about your vest that you're wearing?
- [00:08:31.737]Yeah, some officers will wear this
- [00:08:33.337]when they come to help people stay safe.
- [00:08:36.407]There's lots of different tools that we have.
- [00:08:38.710]We have my, I have my radio right here and comes up here,
- [00:08:42.030]I've got another tool that helps me get
- [00:08:43.750]into cars if I need to.
- [00:08:45.210]I've got some other tools that just keep me safe.
- [00:08:48.960]Right.
- [00:08:49.828]So it can kind of look kind of scary if I'm running
- [00:08:51.990]or you see me see somebody in this kind of uniform
- [00:08:54.360]but just know that all these tools are here to
- [00:08:56.180]help us just like a firefighter.
- [00:08:57.970]Exactly!
- [00:08:59.390]So, remember if you see an officer
- [00:09:01.250]and they have a different uniform on like a vest
- [00:09:03.840]they can still be there to help you too.
- [00:09:08.920]All right, boys and girls.
- [00:09:10.530]Well, I have had such a fun time learning
- [00:09:12.830]about law enforcement at our Sheriff's office.
- [00:09:15.770]And we want to say, thank you
- [00:09:17.160]to officer Aaron here for showing us around.
- [00:09:20.400]We learned so many things
- [00:09:21.840]like what to do if something is happening
- [00:09:24.190]and we need to call that special number,
- [00:09:26.480]who is going to be there to help us.
- [00:09:28.740]And we even met an officer
- [00:09:30.420]and we learned about his vehicle
- [00:09:32.044]and how we could use our eyes
- [00:09:34.044]and our ears so we can listen to stay safe.
- [00:09:38.370]So boys and girls, we wanna say, thank you.
- [00:09:40.647]And we hope you have a great rest of your day.
- [00:09:43.361]Thank you Tristan! Thank you!
- [00:09:45.404](upbeat music)
