- [00:00:01.083]Fit and Healthy Kids,
- [00:00:02.810]an Early Childhood podcast.
- [00:00:06.030]Hello, from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:09.020]Nebraska Extension educators,
- [00:00:11.070]LaDonna Werth and Lisa Poppe,
- [00:00:13.090]are here to talk with you about early childhood.
- [00:00:16.360]What's new, what's happening, and what's for you.
- [00:00:21.640]Do you ever get the feeling your children
- [00:00:23.510]are not listening to you,
- [00:00:25.130]and everyone is upset with each other?
- [00:00:27.870]We hear parents say,
- [00:00:29.537]"Why do I have to repeat myself time and time again?"
- [00:00:33.397]"Why doesn't she listen to me?"
- [00:00:35.680]Listening and following directions
- [00:00:37.760]are important skills young children must learn.
- [00:00:40.670]There are many reasons
- [00:00:41.760]why children do not follow directions.
- [00:00:44.890]Lisa, what happens when a child
- [00:00:47.360]does not hear the directions?
- [00:00:50.080]Well, parents often give directions from a distance
- [00:00:52.750]or in passing,
- [00:00:53.970]like, Lauren, get your shoes on.
- [00:00:56.270]Did your child actually hear what you said?
- [00:00:58.720]Just as adults often don't hear
- [00:01:00.350]what their partner has said to them,
- [00:01:01.980]because they're focused on reading an email
- [00:01:04.760]or talking on the phone,
- [00:01:06.220]children, too, often don't hear what a parent has said,
- [00:01:09.380]because they're focused on a task,
- [00:01:10.810]such as building a tower or drawing a picture.
- [00:01:14.470]What happens
- [00:01:15.600]if the parent gives too many directions at one time?
- [00:01:19.240]When you give your child too many directions
- [00:01:20.970]at one time,
- [00:01:21.930]it reduces the chance that she will follow the directions
- [00:01:24.950]and increases the chance that she will be confused.
- [00:01:28.750]Lauren, please go upstairs, brush your teeth,
- [00:01:30.840]and pick up your blocks while I finish the dishes.
- [00:01:33.410]This multi-step direction is too long
- [00:01:36.080]and complicated for your child to easily understand.
- [00:01:39.480]Instead, try giving only one direction at a time.
- [00:01:43.710]I hear parents give suggestions
- [00:01:45.700]instead of directions.
- [00:01:47.780]Daily conversation is filled with questions,
- [00:01:50.250]suggestions, and directions.
- [00:01:52.660]What you say, will you put your shoes away?
- [00:01:55.710]You are not giving your child a direction,
- [00:01:57.860]you are asking her a question.
- [00:02:00.100]When you give your child a direction
- [00:02:02.040]that needs to be followed,
- [00:02:03.680]it is essential that you tell your child what to do,
- [00:02:06.780]rather than ask.
- [00:02:08.020]For example, Lauren, put your shoes by the door.
- [00:02:11.620]It sounds like it's very important
- [00:02:13.370]to follow through when you give your child directions.
- [00:02:16.100]A technique you can use
- [00:02:17.560]to make sure you do follow through
- [00:02:19.580]when your child has difficulties complying
- [00:02:22.460]or following directions is the DOWAP method.
- [00:02:25.270]Can you explain this to us, Lisa?
- [00:02:27.770]Sure, the DOWAP method goes like this,
- [00:02:31.770]state the do direction,
- [00:02:34.590]W, wait for compliance,
- [00:02:37.430]silently count to five.
- [00:02:39.780]A, ask the child to restate the direction.
- [00:02:43.740]W, wait for compliance,
- [00:02:46.420]and P, provide encouragement or help.
- [00:02:49.350]Helping will ensure success.
- [00:02:51.630]This is the DOWAP method that you can try at home.
- [00:02:54.870]Lisa, what is the bottom line
- [00:02:56.620]of giving directions with your children?
- [00:02:59.280]The bottom line is this,
- [00:03:01.050]you can increase the chances that your child will listen
- [00:03:04.060]and successfully follow your directions
- [00:03:06.600]when you make sure that your direction is clearly stated
- [00:03:10.090]and you follow through.
- [00:03:12.210]This has been LaDonna and Lisa
- [00:03:14.140]with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:03:16.310]Until next time,
- [00:03:17.680]enjoy your family time together.
