- [00:00:00.260]It's time again for our weekly segment focused
- [00:00:02.490]on the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources
- [00:00:04.880]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:07.220]Our guest today is Vice President
- [00:00:08.840]and Vice Chancellor Mike Boehm.
- [00:00:10.740]Well, the school year is over
- [00:00:12.080]and INR is about to launch into summer activities,
- [00:00:14.700]but this week, we're talking about what's happening
- [00:00:17.250]on Nebraska farms and ranches.
- [00:00:19.240]Yeah, absolutely, Rebel.
- [00:00:20.680]It has been a whirlwind
- [00:00:22.240]and the weather's been kind of a whirlwind
- [00:00:25.000]when you think about it.
- [00:00:25.980]It was like 95 degrees a couple of days ago
- [00:00:28.840]and here we are in the 50s,
- [00:00:30.670]so it's kinda crazy.
- [00:00:32.520]It's been an amazing semester,
- [00:00:34.953]jam-packed with events and activities.
- [00:00:38.010]Last Saturday was terrific to be,
- [00:00:40.480]yep, the summer has, you know, a lot going on, too,
- [00:00:44.370]so we're making this transition this last week.
- [00:00:46.540]I think everybody on campus would say
- [00:00:48.300]it was kind of a transition for our team.
- [00:00:50.950]We've got Discovery Days happening on East Campus.
- [00:00:54.030]We've got lots of other activities, but, yeah,
- [00:00:56.530]today, it'd be great to talk a little bit
- [00:00:58.470]about farmers and ranchers and what we're doing here
- [00:01:01.800]at the Land Grant University
- [00:01:03.300]to help move the needle forward.
- [00:01:06.980]Awesome.
- [00:01:07.813]So what is it looking like out there
- [00:01:09.210]for Nebraska farmers right now?
- [00:01:11.180]Yeah, well, you know, every time I'm here,
- [00:01:13.710]I'm a little self-conscious
- [00:01:14.740]'cause you, Bryce, and Alex are all experts on this.
- [00:01:17.702]Oh, my goodness!
- [00:01:18.535]So, thanks for the softball question.
- [00:01:21.300]You know, I think as you go around Nebraska,
- [00:01:24.610]certainly lots of texts
- [00:01:27.945]and video posting about planting,
- [00:01:31.270]so our farmers have been out there planting.
- [00:01:33.930]I think according to CropWatch, planting is taking a bit,
- [00:01:38.440]a little bit later this year than it did last year.
- [00:01:42.010]The Nebraska Farm Bureau projects
- [00:01:43.910]that land planted to field crops in Nebraska this year
- [00:01:46.990]will total just under 20 million, 19.7 million acres,
- [00:01:51.370]with the two largest crops being corn,
- [00:01:54.150]at roughly 9.7 million acres expected,
- [00:01:57.610]and soybeans around 5.7 million acres.
- [00:02:01.530]We've heard a lot too, right, about wheat
- [00:02:05.060]and what's precipitated by what's going on out there
- [00:02:09.570]in the Ukraine.
- [00:02:11.030]Based on our May 1 conditions,
- [00:02:12.820]Nebraska's 2022 winter wheat crop is forecast
- [00:02:16.080]at about 36, almost 37 million bushels.
- [00:02:20.510]That's a bit down, about 10% from last year's crop,
- [00:02:23.790]according to the USDA's National Ag Statistics Service,
- [00:02:28.040]or NASS.
- [00:02:29.150]Yield is forecast at about 41 bushels per acre.
- [00:02:33.090]That's slightly down about eight bushels from last year.
- [00:02:36.970]So, after a pretty dry, windy April,
- [00:02:41.170]we're experiencing, of course, a wetter than average May.
- [00:02:46.080]Go figure. Welcome to Nebraska.
- [00:02:49.600]Or according to our Nebraska State Climate Office experts,
- [00:02:53.910]we're looking at probably a hotter and drier summer.
- [00:02:58.170]Awesome, so we kinda covered
- [00:02:59.500]what's going on on the farming side.
- [00:03:01.330]What about the ranching community right now?
- [00:03:03.180]Well, I should just flip that question to you.
- [00:03:05.053](both laughing)
- [00:03:05.930]So, yeah, you know all about this.
- [00:03:08.630]It's branding season in Nebraska
- [00:03:10.550]for those with spring calving.
- [00:03:13.440]Yeah, according to NASS, Nebraska leads the U.S.
- [00:03:17.660]for 2021 in cash receipts from cattle and calves
- [00:03:21.610]at just under 11.5 billion.
- [00:03:24.920]That's an 18% increase from 2020.
- [00:03:28.430]That's great to see.
- [00:03:30.760]We were in the number one slot.
- [00:03:32.430]Texas and Kansas came in at numbers two and three.
- [00:03:35.460]Of course, ranchers are preparing for summer months,
- [00:03:38.790]and as I mentioned, that forecast tends is believed
- [00:03:42.530]to be hotter and drier this summer.
- [00:03:44.840]The May issue of BeefWatch
- [00:03:46.830]includes several great articles actually,
- [00:03:49.090]and that's another great, just like CropWatch,
- [00:03:51.400]if you google BeefWatch,
- [00:03:52.990]also thinking about complexities around forage conditions,
- [00:03:58.350]and, again, some good articles too
- [00:04:00.710]for those unfortunately impacted
- [00:04:02.630]by significant wildfire damage
- [00:04:06.670]and impact from April.
- [00:04:09.300]Absolutely. Definitely some helpful information there.
- [00:04:12.110]So throughout our conversation today,
- [00:04:13.770]you've mentioned a lot of different UNL programs
- [00:04:16.490]and partner organizations.
- [00:04:18.000]Can you speak to those a little bit?
- [00:04:19.710]Yeah, you know, I think right
- [00:04:21.550]at the beginning of the program,
- [00:04:23.530]UNL is Nebraska's flagship
- [00:04:28.300]land grant public university.
- [00:04:30.280]And certainly, that land grant university piece,
- [00:04:33.520]that's critical.
- [00:04:36.115]The system's been around since 1862,
- [00:04:39.360]and we've been around since 1869.
- [00:04:42.140]So besides things that,
- [00:04:43.740]platforms that ranchers and farmers might find useful
- [00:04:46.750]like CropWatch or the BeefWatch program
- [00:04:50.450]or some of our other platforms,
- [00:04:54.340]the Nebraska Center for Agricultural Profitability,
- [00:04:59.370]I can't speak this morning,
- [00:05:01.320]Nebraska Extension, of course,
- [00:05:03.130]which has a physical footprint in 82 of the 93 counties
- [00:05:07.500]and the State Climate Office,
- [00:05:10.480]the National Drought Mitigation Center,
- [00:05:13.720]just to name a few, these are really key.
- [00:05:16.340]And you know, I'd also give a shout out to our partners,
- [00:05:19.320]such as the Nebraska Farm Bureau,
- [00:05:22.330]the Nebraska Department of Agriculture,
- [00:05:24.610]the USDA, various parts,
- [00:05:28.380]FSA, Rural Development.
- [00:05:30.720]These are all really, really key partners,
- [00:05:33.480]along with our commodity boards, which, of course,
- [00:05:36.110]our farmers and ranchers volunteer and lead,
- [00:05:39.260]and a whole cast of other partners,
- [00:05:42.250]like the Nebraska Community Foundation
- [00:05:44.360]when we think about rural prosperity.
- [00:05:47.270]Awesome, well, certainly lots of great resources available
- [00:05:49.950]to producers across the state.
- [00:05:52.060]Thanks for joining us this morning, Mike.
- [00:05:53.740]And as a reminder, you can learn more about
- [00:05:55.650]all of the exciting things happening
- [00:05:57.030]at the University of Nebraska by going to ruralradio.com
- [00:06:00.270]and clicking on the UNL tab.
- [00:06:02.140]I'm Rebel Sjeklocha reporting.
