- [00:00:02.659]Jordan Rasmussen, Nebraska Extension,
- [00:00:05.179]Rural Prosperity, Nebraska Extension Educator
- [00:00:07.919]based in Garfield Loop and Wheeler Counties.
- [00:00:10.659]Testing. Testing.
- [00:00:14.853]Rural communities need rural community
- [00:00:16.743]leaders to grow and thrive
- [00:00:17.893]but these leaders also need to be nurtured
- [00:00:20.563]as they step into these informal and formal
- [00:00:23.083]leadership capacities.
- [00:00:24.503]Nebraska Extension works with
- [00:00:26.138]communities across the state
- [00:00:27.640]to help build up this leadership capacity.
- [00:00:30.721]Nebraska Extension accomplishes this by
- [00:00:32.771]working along side a community
- [00:00:34.681]to create a framework
- [00:00:35.691]for community leadership
- [00:00:36.851]development program
- [00:00:37.781]that matches
- [00:00:38.751]the communities needs and goals.
- [00:00:40.824]This partnership is critical
- [00:00:42.464]as community leadership development
- [00:00:44.269]is built upon relationships
- [00:00:46.069]and local contacts.
- [00:00:48.379]This might look like a
- [00:00:50.361]multi-month program, a complement to
- [00:00:52.571]an existing leadership program
- [00:00:54.201]or be offered as sessions
- [00:00:55.491]integrated into community initiatives.
- [00:00:59.121]We also encourage communties
- [00:01:00.941]to consider ways they can bring
- [00:01:02.438]youth into these opportunities
- [00:01:04.150]to build up next generation leaders
- [00:01:05.946]along side adults
- [00:01:06.872]growing in their leadership.
- [00:01:08.838]More over,
- [00:01:09.748]in the sessions and lessons
- [00:01:11.338]that Extension Educators teach
- [00:01:13.238]we are drawing upon
- [00:01:14.618]the research and expertise
- [00:01:15.988]of University of Nebraska-Lincoln facility
- [00:01:18.708]applying a place based lens
- [00:01:20.835]and helping leaders grow right in their own communities.
- [00:01:25.664]Ultimately our goal is to work with
- [00:01:27.904]a community to design
- [00:01:28.904]a program that is locally self sustaining
- [00:01:31.046]where leaders help grow
- [00:01:32.686]the next generation of community leaders
- [00:01:34.926]and create a culture of leadership.
- [00:01:40.543]We have seen these community leadership
- [00:01:43.233]develop programs make a difference
- [00:01:45.003]here in rural Nebraska.
- [00:01:46.953]Given the varied goals of communities,
- [00:01:49.013]we want a someone a aspiring leader
- [00:01:51.013]to design and work together on project,
- [00:01:53.363]like a promotional video, a community event
- [00:01:55.633]or an improvement at the park.
- [00:01:57.011]Other communities have sought
- [00:01:59.038]to create networking and organizational match
- [00:02:01.388]activities for aspiring leaders creating a path for
- [00:02:04.018]involvement in leadership opportunities.
- [00:02:06.478]Putting those leadership skills
- [00:02:08.518]into action,
- [00:02:09.438]we see those who participated
- [00:02:11.113]in these programs go onto to serve on
- [00:02:13.188]church, Extension Board, non-profit and
- [00:02:15.228]local economic development boards,
- [00:02:17.078]both locally and statewide.
- [00:02:19.112]Moreover, these folks
- [00:02:20.572]take on leadership roles at work,
- [00:02:22.632]or go on to run for school board,
- [00:02:24.612]city council or county offices.
- [00:02:27.362]And when working at it best,
- [00:02:29.182]we see a leader taking initiative
- [00:02:31.142]around a community opportunity.
- [00:02:33.362]Leveraging the capacity for visioning,
- [00:02:35.622]empowering others and making things happen
- [00:02:38.092]in their home towns.
- [00:02:39.883]In part drawing upon the skills
- [00:02:41.388]they have developed
- [00:02:42.705]through the local leadership
- [00:02:44.133]development program.
- [00:02:46.443]If you would like to learn more
