- [00:00:09.674]for Agricultural Safety and Health at the
- [00:00:11.988]University of Nebraska Medical Center,
- [00:00:14.315]College of Public Health,
- [00:00:15.861]have announced plans for the
- [00:00:17.866]annual “tractor safety” training
- [00:00:19.878]courses scheduled at 6 sites
- [00:00:21.671]across Nebraska.
- [00:00:23.564]Students will complete the first day
- [00:00:26.664]of the course either by
- [00:00:28.162]attending a hands on event
- [00:00:29.570]or online.
- [00:00:31.474]After successfully completing the
- [00:00:33.379]hands-on event
- [00:00:34.756]or the online course, and testing,
- [00:00:36.855]the required driving test will be offered
- [00:00:39.250]at six locations
- [00:00:41.559]across Nebraska.
- [00:00:43.074]Teens 14 or 15 years of age
- [00:00:45.849]who work on farms,
- [00:00:47.367]or others who are interested in
- [00:00:49.505]learning about safe farming practices,
- [00:00:51.806]are encouraged to register
- [00:00:53.599]for the certification course.
- [00:00:55.784]Students under age 14 are
- [00:00:57.572]not eligible for certification.
- [00:01:01.410]Federal law prohibits children
- [00:01:03.289]under 16 years of age
- [00:01:05.188]from using certain equipment on a farm
- [00:01:07.678]unless their parents or legal guardians
- [00:01:10.013]own the farm.
- [00:01:11.888]However, certification received through
- [00:01:14.155]the course grants an exemption
- [00:01:16.183]to the law allowing 14- and 15-year-olds
- [00:01:19.415]to drive a tractor to do field work
- [00:01:22.006]with certain equipment.
- [00:01:24.087]Susan Harris, University of Nebraska
- [00:01:26.154]Extension Educator,
- [00:01:27.641]reports that a common cause
- [00:01:30.214]of agricultural-related injuries
- [00:01:32.180]and deaths
- [00:01:33.386]in Nebraska
- [00:01:34.589]is overturned tractors and ATVs.
- [00:01:37.696]She emphasized that this course is designed
- [00:01:40.471]to train students how to avoid
- [00:01:42.264]these incidents
- [00:01:44.307]as well as many other hazards
- [00:01:46.138]on the farm and ranch.
- [00:01:48.381]The hands-on event
- [00:01:49.807]and the online course will
- [00:01:52.160]cover the required elements
- [00:01:53.868]of the National Safe Tractor and
- [00:01:55.836]Machinery Operation Program,
- [00:01:57.874]including quizzes which students
- [00:01:59.734]must pass to attend
- [00:02:00.958]the driving portion of training.
- [00:02:03.184]Once a student is registered,
- [00:02:04.851]they will be sent instructions,
- [00:02:06.877]materials, course paperwork
- [00:02:09.111]and a link to the online course.
- [00:02:11.597]The onsite driving training
- [00:02:13.381]and exam will include
- [00:02:14.851]a driving test and equipment operation and
- [00:02:18.622]ATV safety lessons.
- [00:02:20.343]Students will demonstrate competence
- [00:02:23.071]in hitching and unhitching equipment
- [00:02:25.525]and driving a tractor and trailer
- [00:02:27.348]through a standardized course.
- [00:02:29.451]Instructors will also offer education
- [00:02:32.230]about safe behaviors and laws for ATVs,
- [00:02:35.580]utility-task vehicles (UTVs),
- [00:02:37.762]and other off-road vehicles (ORVs).
- [00:02:40.300]The cost of the course is $25
- [00:02:42.479]and includes education materials,
- [00:02:45.293]the online learning link, and supplies.
- [00:02:48.648]Payment will be made
- [00:02:50.239]at the time of the driving exam.
