- [00:00:01.210]Hello, and welcome to the living
- [00:00:02.650]in university housing session.
- [00:00:04.750]We know that choosing
- [00:00:05.850]where your student's going to live is a big decision,
- [00:00:08.140]and we know it's tough to make but we are excited
- [00:00:10.200]that you're here today
- [00:00:11.033]and really excited to share with you both the benefits
- [00:00:13.420]and also what to expect as you live in campus next year.
- [00:00:20.465](bright upbeat music)
- [00:00:23.099]It's Move-in Day.
- [00:00:24.595](bright upbeat music)
- [00:02:25.860]With that, we hope you got an idea
- [00:02:27.390]of what it's gonna be like as you're jumping into campus
- [00:02:29.780]and really starting to experience that campus life.
- [00:02:32.180]Now, before I go any further
- [00:02:33.380]I wanna bring your attention to the QR code on the screen.
- [00:02:36.130]This is gonna be the handout
- [00:02:37.200]that we have with all the information we're going over today
- [00:02:39.600]as well as other takeaways
- [00:02:40.740]specifically relating to some of these topics as well.
- [00:02:43.430]So go ahead and download that.
- [00:02:44.580]Feel free to pause this video
- [00:02:45.590]if you need for a second to do that,
- [00:02:47.330]and then otherwise we're gonna keep
- [00:02:48.490]going with this presentation.
- [00:02:50.910]So the first question I often get asked is why housing?
- [00:02:53.500]Why would I live on campus?
- [00:02:54.630]What is the importance of this?
- [00:02:55.730]And what does that really mean?
- [00:02:57.330]One of the first pieces that I always like to talk
- [00:02:58.790]about though is that students
- [00:02:59.900]who live on campus are more engaged.
- [00:03:01.970]This means that they're able to be involved on campus,
- [00:03:04.050]they're able to do what they need to do,
- [00:03:05.400]and really focus on the academics
- [00:03:07.500]that they're here for,
- [00:03:08.333]making new friends, building those connections,
- [00:03:10.310]and doing all of that to ensure
- [00:03:12.020]that they're being successful here as well.
- [00:03:14.130]Playing in with that
- [00:03:15.200]one of the things that we know
- [00:03:16.530]is that students who live on campus have a higher GPA.
- [00:03:19.860]This is an important thing to note
- [00:03:21.020]because we know students are here for a degree,
- [00:03:22.610]we want them to graduate, we want them to do that.
- [00:03:24.710]And with that higher GPA
- [00:03:26.010]it also leads that they're more likely to graduate
- [00:03:28.260]in both four and six years.
- [00:03:30.470]I mention this because it's important
- [00:03:31.890]to acknowledge the fact
- [00:03:32.760]that there is a major impact
- [00:03:34.040]of students living on campus and their success.
- [00:03:36.420]And so we wanna make sure that every one of your students
- [00:03:38.650]is able to be successful,
- [00:03:40.140]and is able to really dive in and do their best.
- [00:03:43.910]Additionally, we get asked, "Okay, still, that's great,
- [00:03:46.067]"they're more successful,
- [00:03:47.507]"but why what does this look like?
- [00:03:48.967]"What is that gonna mean?
- [00:03:49.800]"And what really impact is that going to play
- [00:03:52.107]"for my student here on campus?"
- [00:03:54.670]First and foremost, they're gonna find a community.
- [00:03:56.960]We pride ourselves in working diligently
- [00:03:58.870]to make sure that each and every one of our students
- [00:04:01.160]is able to connect with the community,
- [00:04:02.670]able to find new friends and really build that relationship.
- [00:04:06.020]This could be something where it's someone that they knew
- [00:04:07.640]in high school, but have gotten to know better here.
- [00:04:09.350]It could be a brand new friend outta state,
- [00:04:11.510]someone from another country, whatever that may be,
- [00:04:14.000]we wanna make sure that they're finding
- [00:04:15.240]that sense of community here on campus.
- [00:04:17.720]The next piece is is we wanna connect them.
- [00:04:19.330]We wanna connect them with resources, opportunities,
- [00:04:21.460]different groups,
- [00:04:23.090]really to make sure that they're able to build
- [00:04:24.710]those relationships again
- [00:04:26.200]and make sure that they have that success
- [00:04:28.220]here while they're on campus as well.
- [00:04:31.140]With that, we talked a little bit about being successful
- [00:04:33.030]but I cannot emphasize enough the ability for students
- [00:04:35.240]to thrive here on campus.
- [00:04:36.950]One of the pieces is is we already talked about grades
- [00:04:38.970]and graduation,
- [00:04:39.930]but we also wanna make sure that as they're doing that,
- [00:04:41.760]they're doing in intentional ways,
- [00:04:43.070]whether that's through the study rooms,
- [00:04:44.550]forming a study group within their learning community
- [00:04:46.520]or any of those other opportunities
- [00:04:47.870]to make sure that they're really finding
- [00:04:49.180]what they need here on campus.
- [00:04:51.740]From there, we know students it's tough on campus
- [00:04:54.570]sometimes and we wanna make sure
- [00:04:55.660]that they have the support that they need.
- [00:04:57.470]This could be someone like an RA on campus,
- [00:04:59.450]the Resident Assistant
- [00:05:00.283]who lives on each and every floor,
- [00:05:01.730]to make sure that they have that connection right there.
- [00:05:03.720]It could be their Resident Director, who also, you know,
- [00:05:05.820]is in the residence halls on call
- [00:05:07.180]doing those different pieces.
- [00:05:08.580]It could also be our counselor and residence program
- [00:05:10.390]to make sure that students
- [00:05:11.250]have all the support that they need to be successful
- [00:05:13.750]and to do their best while they're on campus.
- [00:05:17.310]So now one of the biggest questions
- [00:05:18.850]I get asked is about room selection.
- [00:05:20.810]What's going on?
- [00:05:21.643]What's gonna happen?
- [00:05:22.476]How is this gonna play out for me?
- [00:05:23.850]And what do I need to know about this?
- [00:05:26.640]First and foremost,
- [00:05:27.600]you should have already received an email
- [00:05:29.470]with your appointment time.
- [00:05:31.010]What this is is this is the time
- [00:05:32.500]that you'll be able to log into the housing portal
- [00:05:34.360]and actually select rooms.
- [00:05:36.570]These rooms are going to be something
- [00:05:38.050]where you're gonna see every available room
- [00:05:39.720]as you log into that segment.
- [00:05:41.290]So you're able to really say,
- [00:05:42.177]"Yes, this is the room and this hall that I want
- [00:05:44.567]"and you're gonna see all the options
- [00:05:45.877]"that we have available when you log in."
- [00:05:48.090]Now you are going to be able to edit
- [00:05:50.090]that if you are like, "Oh, I may wanna change this."
- [00:05:52.670]But we always wanna make sure
- [00:05:53.620]that you're able to select that room
- [00:05:54.890]as you're going through as well.
- [00:05:57.410]Additionally, you may have already paired with a roommate.
- [00:06:00.150]If you have paired with that roommate,
- [00:06:01.500]whoever has the earliest appointment
- [00:06:03.190]time is going to select that room.
- [00:06:05.400]We do this so you're able to say,
- [00:06:06.667]"Yep, we know that my roommate has an earlier time
- [00:06:08.707]"and they're able to do that."
- [00:06:09.660]Or if you're the roommate with the earlier time,
- [00:06:11.490]you're able to bring both you and your roommate
- [00:06:13.270]together as well.
- [00:06:15.460]Additionally, I mentioned you can change rooms.
- [00:06:17.360]You're gonna be able to change rooms through early July.
- [00:06:19.610]And so if you log in and you're like,
- [00:06:20.593]"Oh, I didn't see my first choice.
- [00:06:22.597]"It wasn't available at the time."
- [00:06:24.080]You're going to be able to change that room selection
- [00:06:26.250]and edit that as you see fit
- [00:06:28.310]with whatever rooms are available through that.
- [00:06:31.410]Finally, you're going to be selecting your bed height
- [00:06:33.410]and meal plan at this time.
- [00:06:35.280]The reason is, is we wanna make that process
- [00:06:37.220]as smooth as possible when you're showing up for moving.
- [00:06:39.350]And so we wanna adjust that bed height in advance
- [00:06:41.670]and then really make sure that you're able to start picking
- [00:06:43.830]that meal plan and doing all those things.
- [00:06:45.950]You may be asking yourself now,
- [00:06:47.667]"What meal plan should I pick?
- [00:06:48.787]"What does that even look like?
- [00:06:49.947]"I'm not quite sure."
- [00:06:51.480]Conveniently, we're gonna talk about meal plans now.
- [00:06:54.040]So there is two things
- [00:06:55.600]on every meal plan that you're going to see.
- [00:06:57.410]The first one is meal swipes.
- [00:06:59.770]Meal swipes are going to be something that works
- [00:07:01.350]at all of our dining center and to-go options,
- [00:07:03.580]and it's worth essentially a full quote-unquote, "meal".
- [00:07:06.630]We emphasize this because some students
- [00:07:08.240]will want more meal swipes
- [00:07:09.250]because they want to have a full meal, you know,
- [00:07:10.990]three times a day, all those pieces,
- [00:07:12.800]but other students may want less meal.
- [00:07:14.090]Swipes because they're like,
- [00:07:14.923]"Oh, I don't really eat breakfast too often."
- [00:07:16.630]Or, "I, you know, wanna be mindful of that."
- [00:07:18.230]And so we wanna make sure that it's customized for you.
- [00:07:21.040]Now, in addition to meal swipes, we have dining dollars.
- [00:07:24.350]These are going to be able to be used at any food
- [00:07:26.400]or coffee in the Union, Herbie's Market, all dining centers,
- [00:07:29.800]and really this is about that flexibility.
- [00:07:31.500]So if you are someone who doesn't eat breakfast
- [00:07:33.280]for instance, and you may just want a quick juice
- [00:07:35.090]in the morning on your way to class,
- [00:07:36.550]it makes a lot more sense to have a dining dollar,
- [00:07:38.810]spend a couple dollars on that as you're going to class
- [00:07:41.200]at a Herbie's Market versus using a full meal swipe
- [00:07:43.280]and, you know, running into the dining hall
- [00:07:44.520]just to get a little bit of juice.
- [00:07:46.240]Again, we wanna make sure you have the meal plan
- [00:07:47.990]that is right for you,
- [00:07:48.930]and that really fits the needs that you have.
- [00:07:51.470]Now, in addition with meal plans,
- [00:07:52.630]I wanna make sure that you're aware of all these details.
- [00:07:54.840]First and foremost, every first year option
- [00:07:57.130]is going to be the same cost.
- [00:07:58.750]And so, as you are looking at these,
- [00:08:00.460]the reason we have different options
- [00:08:01.760]with dining dollars and meal swipes
- [00:08:03.710]is because we wanna make sure that it works for you.
- [00:08:05.800]We wanna make sure that again you are able to do this
- [00:08:08.190]and really able to dive into that
- [00:08:09.640]and really find that connection with it as well.
- [00:08:12.550]From there, some people might be like,
- [00:08:14.137]"Oh, God, what if I pick the wrong meal plan?
- [00:08:15.677]"What's going on?
- [00:08:16.510]"What's going to happen?"
- [00:08:18.010]What we want you to do is test drive that meal plan,
- [00:08:20.270]do your best selection,
- [00:08:21.320]but test drive that for the first two weeks.
- [00:08:23.290]If at the end of that two week frame
- [00:08:24.610]you don't like your meal plan,
- [00:08:25.840]you think you need to change something about it,
- [00:08:27.780]we want you to change.
- [00:08:28.820]And there is no cost of that.
- [00:08:29.940]That is not something that we're gonna ask
- [00:08:31.080]you to pay more for and do anything like that.
- [00:08:33.010]We wanna get the meal plan that's right for you.
- [00:08:35.190]The same goes at the end of first semester,
- [00:08:37.010]if you're saying, "Yes, I need to switch meal plans.
- [00:08:39.007]"I'm not quite on the right one,
- [00:08:40.337]"and you wanna switch to a different one."
- [00:08:41.680]Please do so as well before the start of second semester,
- [00:08:43.880]we wanna make sure that you have the meal plan
- [00:08:46.270]that works best for you.
- [00:08:48.610]From there I am gonna ask you to download one app,
- [00:08:51.080]and this is what's called the Transact Mobile app.
- [00:08:53.520]What's gonna happen is you are gonna download this,
- [00:08:55.420]and this is going to really give
- [00:08:56.780]you that flexibility to do mobile ordering.
- [00:08:59.720]Any one of our Husker Heroes sandwich shops,
- [00:09:02.780]any of the restaurants within Selleck and the Union,
- [00:09:05.290]all order through those apps.
- [00:09:07.230]And so what will happen is you will actually be able
- [00:09:08.930]to order your food and then it will notify
- [00:09:10.610]you when it's ready.
- [00:09:11.443]So you're able to pick it up,
- [00:09:12.276]go to class, do anything that you need from there as well.
- [00:09:15.720]Finally, I wanted to really emphasize dietary needs.
- [00:09:18.540]This is something where we know everyone in this room
- [00:09:20.480]has different both preferences but then also needs.
- [00:09:22.670]There's different allergies,
- [00:09:23.610]there's different things like that,
- [00:09:24.937]and what we want you to know is that we are committed
- [00:09:27.160]to making sure that you are able to get nutritious good food
- [00:09:30.730]regardless of dining hall, as well for that as well.
- [00:09:33.860]Now we do have things like a gluten free restaurant.
- [00:09:36.040]We also have an eight plus line in Harper Dining,
- [00:09:39.300]but then from there if you have other specific dietary needs
- [00:09:41.660]you wanna talk to,
- [00:09:42.860]we want to make sure that you are connecting
- [00:09:44.960]with our dietician on staff,
- [00:09:46.630]enable really to make sure that you're able to do that
- [00:09:48.940]and get the dietary needs that you need met.
- [00:09:52.240]So now I get asked a lot, what am I supposed to bring?
- [00:09:54.890]What is that list?
- [00:09:55.980]And here is again, another QR code for you.
- [00:09:57.980]This is different than the first one,
- [00:09:59.700]that we want you to really screenshot to get,
- [00:10:01.670]what might that packing list look like,
- [00:10:03.230]how might that play out and what might that need to be?
- [00:10:06.600]So now that you've done all of your packing
- [00:10:09.030]we want you to think about move-in.
- [00:10:11.120]This is something where we're gonna start
- [00:10:12.610]to talk those details.
- [00:10:13.620]What does that look like,
- [00:10:14.510]and how might that really be?"
- [00:10:16.730]First and foremost, August 15th through 18th, 2022,
- [00:10:20.730]is when you'll be moving into the residence halls.
- [00:10:22.910]We have blocked these days out specifically,
- [00:10:24.610]and we wanna make sure that you have that,
- [00:10:26.270]so that you're able to have that information
- [00:10:27.650]and start making those plans.
- [00:10:29.550]Each and every one of you is going
- [00:10:30.660]to have a specific move-in time,
- [00:10:32.250]and that is gonna be emailed to you later this summer,
- [00:10:34.180]and we'll talk about that in a second.
- [00:10:35.870]But once you've made that room selection
- [00:10:37.890]and have your room,
- [00:10:38.870]if you go to the move-in website,
- [00:10:40.290]you're actually able to see when your residence hall
- [00:10:42.450]and when your floor specifically is moving in,
- [00:10:44.900]so you're able to start making those plans.
- [00:10:48.220]The reason we do all this is we offer
- [00:10:49.860]what's called assisted move-in.
- [00:10:51.560]And what this looks like is you will actually start
- [00:10:54.520]your moving journey
- [00:10:55.353]and bring your car up to the front of the building.
- [00:10:56.890]And then someone is actually going to unload
- [00:10:58.730]your vehicle for you, put it in carts, do all of that,
- [00:11:01.110]because we wanna make this as stress free as possible.
- [00:11:03.660]Many of you who haven't been in Nebraska
- [00:11:05.230]or who have been in Nebraska may know
- [00:11:07.300]that August isn't always the most beautiful month,
- [00:11:09.340]it's gorgeous, but it might be pretty hot.
- [00:11:11.510]We try and do this to make sure that we're having,
- [00:11:13.520]you know, the best experience for all of you,
- [00:11:14.950]and that you're able to really focus
- [00:11:16.140]on what's important and setting up really relaxing
- [00:11:18.700]and being here on campus and doing all that.
- [00:11:21.800]The other piece I want to emphasize
- [00:11:23.160]is move-in is going to start at the Devaney Center.
- [00:11:25.990]You should not go to your residence hall first
- [00:11:27.870]to start your move-in process,
- [00:11:28.900]your key will not be there.
- [00:11:30.420]And so we want you to go to the Devaney Sports Center
- [00:11:32.580]and we'll be sending again that information
- [00:11:34.230]but we wanna make sure that you have that
- [00:11:35.920]and you know that in advance,
- [00:11:37.030]so you know where you're going on that day for move-in.
- [00:11:39.810]The other question I often get is I'm in a group
- [00:11:42.120]that's moving in early.
- [00:11:43.290]What do I do,
- [00:11:44.123]when am I moving in, what does that look like?
- [00:11:46.200]On our move-in website for housing,
- [00:11:48.320]what's gonna happen is they're gonna have a whole list
- [00:11:50.400]of options for what that move in time
- [00:11:52.910]is specifically tied to your group.
- [00:11:56.030]The other thing is that that group
- [00:11:57.500]should also be communicating with you,
- [00:11:59.220]so that you know when that move in time is,
- [00:12:01.000]you know what's going on,
- [00:12:01.920]you know what that process is,
- [00:12:03.610]because we wanna make sure you have the most accurate
- [00:12:05.460]and up-to-date information.
- [00:12:08.210]So as we are wrapping up today,
- [00:12:10.270]what I wanted to be mindful of is what are the next steps?
- [00:12:12.740]What are the things that you should be doing?
- [00:12:14.420]What do you need to be doing?
- [00:12:15.680]And how do we really get that kind of pulled together?
- [00:12:18.450]First and foremost, you need to pick your room.
- [00:12:20.750]When you have that appointment time
- [00:12:21.880]please make sure to pick that room.
- [00:12:23.250]We wanna make sure that you have that,
- [00:12:24.920]we wanna make sure that you're excited
- [00:12:26.520]and you know where you're living next year
- [00:12:28.000]and really ready to, you know,
- [00:12:29.300]settle into your new home here on campus.
- [00:12:31.910]From there, please connect with your roommate.
- [00:12:34.080]You hear me say this?
- [00:12:34.913]And you're like, "Oh, ha ha, this is funny."
- [00:12:36.920]But part of it is, is we wanna make sure
- [00:12:38.380]that you're talking in advance,
- [00:12:39.680]you're bringing the same things,
- [00:12:40.810]you're talking about what expectations
- [00:12:42.190]you have for one another
- [00:12:43.270]and are really able to make sure that that connection
- [00:12:45.410]is starting the school year off strong
- [00:12:46.950]as you're coming in as well.
- [00:12:49.130]From there please watch for move-in information.
- [00:12:51.350]I mentioned, you're gonna get an email
- [00:12:52.780]with a specific time and date of that move-in time
- [00:12:55.890]and we will be sending that.
- [00:12:57.170]But again, if you are curious what is the general timeframe
- [00:12:59.780]I'll be moving in?
- [00:13:00.910]After you've picked your room, please go check that out,
- [00:13:03.010]so you can see, oh, this is where and I'm moving in
- [00:13:05.340]or this is what that looks like,
- [00:13:06.700]to make sure that you know all that information as well.
- [00:13:10.130]From there during that first couple days
- [00:13:11.890]that you're here on campus,
- [00:13:12.723]we're gonna have different events
- [00:13:13.940]but specifically we'll have block parties
- [00:13:15.590]at each of our residence halls
- [00:13:17.040]as well as Residence Hall Association
- [00:13:18.670]or RHA events that we wanna make
- [00:13:20.290]sure you're able to connect with
- [00:13:21.610]and able to do all of that as well.
- [00:13:24.800]Finally, as we wrap up,
- [00:13:26.080]I wanted to draw your attention to three QR codes.
- [00:13:28.750]You've already seen the first two, the handout,
- [00:13:30.910]that we have for the presentation today.
- [00:13:32.440]The what to bring list.
- [00:13:33.610]But then if you're curious of like,
- [00:13:34.760]ah, I really don't know where to shop
- [00:13:36.170]or I don't know quite what I want to do right now,
- [00:13:38.300]please click that other one right there,
- [00:13:39.720]and that'll take you to a Husker Decor shop,
- [00:13:42.700]hosted through our bookstore
- [00:13:44.160]and they will make sure to connect
- [00:13:45.160]you with all the information
- [00:13:46.170]and all the different things you need.
- [00:13:47.960]From there, on the left you'll also see
- [00:13:49.600]both our website as well as our social media handles.
