- [00:00:00.000]Hey, everybody.
- [00:00:01.130]I'm Colton Husa.
- [00:00:02.405]I'm the IFC Director of Recruitment,
- [00:00:03.400]and this is the IFC Housing Presentation.
- [00:00:06.040]To get started off,
- [00:00:06.873]there are 16 house chapters here
- [00:00:08.670]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:11.010]There's 13 on City,
- [00:00:12.180]and there's three on East Campus.
- [00:00:14.550]Chapter dues.
- [00:00:15.383]So the average cost to live in a chapter house
- [00:00:17.760]is 7,000 to $13,500 per year.
- [00:00:20.990]So this is split out per semester,
- [00:00:22.140]so some houses have different split up bills per semester.
- [00:00:27.810]However, this is the average cost per year.
- [00:00:30.670]Usually, this includes a meal plan, their room,
- [00:00:33.800]wi-fi, study materials,
- [00:00:35.560]sometimes, apparel the fraternity may have,
- [00:00:37.690]cleaning materials, as well as parking.
- [00:00:39.920]The average cost of a non-house chapter
- [00:00:41.970]or an out-of-house member is around 1,500 to $2,500.
- [00:00:45.600]The important thing to remember
- [00:00:46.790]is that this is a contract that you're gonna sign,
- [00:00:48.920]so before you sign it,
- [00:00:50.110]learn the cancellation process
- [00:00:51.620]as well as the refund policies.
- [00:00:54.370]So the basic setup of house chapters,
- [00:00:56.050]so each house on campus
- [00:00:57.340]has different living styles and rooming assignments.
- [00:00:59.990]For instance, some of 'em may have suite-style living,
- [00:01:03.690]some of 'em are dorm, some of 'em are apartment.
- [00:01:06.306]You really just have to tour the houses
- [00:01:08.410]and see which one fits you.
- [00:01:10.260]There may be two-man, four-man, or maybe six-man rooms.
- [00:01:13.770]New men may also be moved around from room to room
- [00:01:16.300]a couple of times a semester.
- [00:01:17.420]This is depending on the chapter,
- [00:01:18.990]but this is just to meet new guys,
- [00:01:20.240]whether they're in their new member class
- [00:01:22.500]or maybe some upperclassmen.
- [00:01:24.020]And be sure to ask what the living accommodations are
- [00:01:26.820]and what to expect.
- [00:01:28.050]So for instance,
- [00:01:28.883]some houses may require you to bring,
- [00:01:30.180]like an office chair or maybe a desk, or maybe a chair,
- [00:01:33.060]if they wanna sit in a chair, or TVs.
- [00:01:35.320]Just be sure to ask these questions
- [00:01:36.790]to know what to bring on move-in.
- [00:01:39.920]The university housing.
- [00:01:41.860]So the cancellation of the residence hall contract,
- [00:01:44.570]so to do this,
- [00:01:45.403]you go to the housing portal via your MYRED account,
- [00:01:49.000]there's the URL for it.
- [00:01:50.560]Under the important links,
- [00:01:51.810]you click the blue Housing button.
- [00:01:53.570]You click Apply for Housing in the red navigation bar.
- [00:01:56.490]You click Continue,
- [00:01:57.570]then continue to the next contract you're wanting to cancel.
- [00:02:00.370]On the Housing Application Info page,
- [00:02:02.540]you select, I want to cancel my housing contract,
- [00:02:05.000]and click Save and Continue.
- [00:02:06.960]Follow all the necessary prompts
- [00:02:08.210]until you reach the Contract Cancellation Complete page.
- [00:02:12.560]Important thing to note is the housing cancellation forms
- [00:02:15.800]are to be done by July 15th.
- [00:02:17.830]After July 15th,
- [00:02:19.060]there will be a fee that increases daily,
- [00:02:21.660]if the contract is canceled.
- [00:02:23.260]The fee amount depends
- [00:02:24.100]on what residence hall your student is registered for,
- [00:02:25.910]so whether they're in the suites or maybe a dorm set up,
- [00:02:28.670]it really depends what the fee amount is.
- [00:02:32.100]Also, some houses I know, if the student signs,
- [00:02:35.460]like July 15th,
- [00:02:36.501]and they cancel the housing contract July 17th,
- [00:02:38.830]some houses provide refunds for that fee.
- [00:02:43.100]So just make sure you talk to the house
- [00:02:44.470]and make sure everything is squared away for the canceling.
- [00:02:49.770]If you have any questions on this,
- [00:02:51.760]feel free to reach out to us
- [00:02:53.040]at the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
- [00:02:54.790]However, to cut out the middleman,
- [00:02:56.900]Housing is the best office to contact.
- [00:03:01.790]They're the ones that make these contracts
- [00:03:03.490]and the cancellation process,
- [00:03:05.100]so they know the ins and outs of how to cancel 'em.
- [00:03:09.020]Fraternity contracts.
- [00:03:09.910]So fraternity contracts are between the student and parents
- [00:03:12.360]as well as with the fraternity,
- [00:03:13.920]so these contracts are to be signed
- [00:03:15.310]before the student is officially a new member
- [00:03:17.120]of the chapter.
- [00:03:18.310]The completion dates vary from chapter to chapter,
- [00:03:20.440]depending on when the move in is.
- [00:03:22.670]The important things to remember
- [00:03:23.840]and consider before signing the contract
- [00:03:25.530]is read through the contract with your student
- [00:03:27.720]to know what you are signing,
- [00:03:29.730]ask him any questions
- [00:03:30.563]regarding the contract completion dates,
- [00:03:32.520]any information in the contract,
- [00:03:34.200]as well as cancellation process and procedure.
- [00:03:36.820]This is an important leap
- [00:03:38.010]in your student's early college life,
- [00:03:39.830]so make sure everything is squared away
- [00:03:41.270]and understood in the contract.
- [00:03:42.850]I remember when I was first going through my contract
- [00:03:45.520]before signing it to move in,
- [00:03:48.410]my mom and dad sat down
- [00:03:49.700]and called the president of my fraternity
- [00:03:52.590]and talked and any questions
- [00:03:54.938]or any things that they wanted to touch on,
- [00:03:58.090]they made sure to call.
- [00:03:58.930]And, I really thank them for that, lookin' back,
- [00:04:01.500]and it's a very important part of moving into a chapter.
- [00:04:05.720]So just make sure there's no reading in between the lines,
- [00:04:08.940]or any hidden fees, or any of that.
- [00:04:12.220]Important dates to know.
- [00:04:13.810]July 15th is the last date to cancel
- [00:04:16.690]University Nebraska Lincoln housing contract
- [00:04:18.970]without a penalty, and also,
- [00:04:20.510]August 18th is the usual date for fraternity move-in.
- [00:04:24.490]Make sure to ask about this.
- [00:04:25.700]The date may change,
- [00:04:27.380]depending on when the fraternity
- [00:04:29.700]wants their new men to move-in.
- [00:04:30.850]So sometimes, that'd be that Thursday before school starts,
- [00:04:33.840]so some of 'em,
- [00:04:34.673]or that'd be that Friday before school starts,
- [00:04:36.540]so sometimes, they want 'em to move-in Thursday or Wednesday
- [00:04:38.700]or maybe that Friday or Saturday.
- [00:04:40.410]It all depends on what the fraternity has ready
- [00:04:43.790]and really wants,
- [00:04:45.460]how they're set up for the first weekend of college.
- [00:04:49.780]Expectations.
- [00:04:50.613]So each house has its expectations of new members
- [00:04:53.580]in their first year and even their whole college experience,
- [00:04:56.010]so many of these expectations
- [00:04:57.700]are written out in that contract.
- [00:05:00.480]Make sure to ask questions on like,
- [00:05:03.600]the academic standards
- [00:05:04.820]or the study accommodations that the fraternity may hold.
- [00:05:09.550]Each fraternity has their own separate
- [00:05:11.910]kind of goals or academic standards
- [00:05:15.720]that they hold their men to,
- [00:05:16.730]so make sure you talk to them about that,
- [00:05:18.850]as well as how they're gonna help their student,
- [00:05:20.690]help your student, succeed and reach those goals.
- [00:05:24.460]Talkin' about the social aspect
- [00:05:25.840]of their first year in the fraternity
- [00:05:27.270]is another important topic.
- [00:05:29.820]Students are there for an education first,
- [00:05:31.990]however, there are benefits
- [00:05:33.800]to making connections and, outside of school,
- [00:05:37.420]where they can meet new people, create new contacts,
- [00:05:40.820]all that.
- [00:05:41.653]So make sure you talk to the men of the fraternity
- [00:05:44.620]and talk about all the social aspects too.
- [00:05:47.850]Be sure to also talk to the men of the fraternity
- [00:05:49.860]and give them your expectations for them
- [00:05:51.490]as well as your student.
- [00:05:54.531]I remember when I was moving in,
- [00:05:56.110]my mom made sure to talk to everybody,
- [00:05:57.940]and she even asked one guy his GPA.
- [00:05:59.850]And, lookin' back on it,
- [00:06:02.020]I was very nervous and kinda embarrassed at the time,
- [00:06:04.720]however, it was a very great thing
- [00:06:06.960]for my mom to be able to go in there
- [00:06:08.760]and state the expectations she had of them
- [00:06:11.270]and made sure that they kept a watchful eye over me
- [00:06:13.470]and made sure I was doing well for my,
- [00:06:16.640]the huge life change from high school to college,
- [00:06:18.880]or even from not living in a fraternity
- [00:06:20.840]to livin' in a fraternity.
- [00:06:21.830]And it's,
- [00:06:22.960]I really do thank them for that,
- [00:06:24.190]and that's a very big very big part
- [00:06:26.280]into moving somebody into college, let alone a fraternity.
- [00:06:32.270]So, meal plans.
- [00:06:33.330]So,
- [00:06:34.780]this is for off-campus students, so the,
- [00:06:38.740]to keep convenience of the variety of a fresh meal option,
- [00:06:42.530]weekends, late nights, and popular dining dollar options
- [00:06:44.480]are included in this meal plan or other meal plans too.
- [00:06:48.260]There's four dining centers.
- [00:06:49.290]It'd be Selleck Food Court Two, Husker Heroes,
- [00:06:53.610]Tazza Coffee Shops, Dining Dollars at Nebraska Unions.
- [00:06:57.110]These are all just places where the student can go
- [00:07:01.270]with their meal plan and eat.
- [00:07:03.020]So the recommended plans for off-campus students
- [00:07:05.810]is the Bronze,
- [00:07:07.660]which is 50 meals
- [00:07:09.970]and $275 in dining dollars per semester,
- [00:07:15.200]which is an average of about three meals per week
- [00:07:17.800]plus the dining dollars that they may use.
- [00:07:20.650]Many houses, their,
- [00:07:22.260]the usual setup for their eating
- [00:07:25.770]is they have breakfast and lunch,
- [00:07:28.360]or yeah, breakfast and lunch about five days a week,
- [00:07:31.210]so Monday through Friday,
- [00:07:32.870]and they usually only have supper Monday through Thursday,
- [00:07:38.580]not counting Friday.
- [00:07:39.413]Make sure you talk to the chapter about this too
- [00:07:41.670]before thinkin' about a meal plan
- [00:07:43.130]to see how they provide food,
- [00:07:45.440]the days they'll provide food as well.
- [00:07:47.310]There's also a Silver option,
- [00:07:48.650]which is 75 meals and $500 in dining dollars per semester,
- [00:07:52.640]which is an average of four to five meals per week
- [00:07:54.900]and dining dollars.
- [00:07:56.510]So these are like,
- [00:07:57.570]if your student is out studying away from the house,
- [00:08:01.040]and they're at lunch,
- [00:08:01.873]they can go get a meal at one of the unions
- [00:08:04.550]or one of the coffee shops or one of the restaurants
- [00:08:07.740]and use their dining dollars there.
- [00:08:11.150]So, thank you so much for watching.
- [00:08:13.040]If you have any questions, reach out to me.
- [00:08:15.130]My IFC email's right there,
- [00:08:19.360]I check that every day.
- [00:08:21.630]John Gayer, he's our Advisor for the IFC.
- [00:08:24.140]He's also the Assistant Director
- [00:08:26.030]of Fraternity and Sorority Life here at Lincoln.
- [00:08:27.860]His university email is right there
- [00:08:30.120]as well as the number for our office.
- [00:08:32.900]Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have
- [00:08:36.105]or anything that you may need,
- [00:08:38.320]throughout this whole recruitment session.
- [00:08:41.410]So,
- [00:08:43.100]if you have any questions, again, reach out.
- [00:08:45.210]As well as with the housing,
- [00:08:47.520]if you look up unl.edu/housing, you can go to their page,
- [00:08:51.900]and it shows their contact information.
- [00:08:54.010]And for anything about the cancellation process,
- [00:08:55.810]you can reach out to them.
- [00:08:57.050]So, thank you so much.
