- [00:00:02.270]Hi, my name is Isaac Jacobs,
- [00:00:03.610]and I am the president of the Inter-fraternity Council
- [00:00:05.770]and I am a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.
- [00:00:08.350]Today, what I wanna talk to you guys about
- [00:00:09.920]is how fraternity life is like here at UNL.
- [00:00:12.360]There are five large values that we use
- [00:00:13.850]to guide our community to the best that they can be,
- [00:00:16.280]and that is academic achievement, leadership development,
- [00:00:18.750]civic engagement, community and belonging,
- [00:00:20.880]and inclusive excellence.
- [00:00:22.840]Building on to academic achievement.
- [00:00:24.570]Last fall, we had an all Greek GPA average of 3.221,
- [00:00:29.070]which is 0.2 higher than the non-Greek average.
- [00:00:32.700]Moving on to leadership development.
- [00:00:34.210]Fraternities have leadership programs
- [00:00:35.770]that is specific to each fraternity
- [00:00:37.140]that help teach men how to live their lives
- [00:00:39.610]and develop leadership and professional skills
- [00:00:41.630]that they need for their future endeavors.
- [00:00:43.890]With civic engagement, all the fraternities here
- [00:00:46.140]have specific philanthropies that raise for events
- [00:00:48.400]that they all feel passionate about,
- [00:00:49.880]but one that unifies the entire Greek fraternity life here
- [00:00:53.500]is the April Sampson Cancer Center
- [00:00:55.700]provided by the Bryan Hospitals here in Lincoln,
- [00:00:59.230]and we have decided to raise $150,000
- [00:01:01.570]for the local cafe within that cancer center.
- [00:01:05.240]Community and belonging is a huge part of Greek life
- [00:01:07.790]here at UNL.
- [00:01:08.910]Everybody is welcome and each fraternity has a brotherhood
- [00:01:12.340]that can not be broken.
- [00:01:14.220]And moving on to inclusive and excellence,
- [00:01:16.050]everybody is welcome.
- [00:01:17.230]Everybody's accepted for who they are
- [00:01:19.220]and it's a home away from home.
- [00:01:21.060]I'm Colton Husa.
- [00:01:21.970]I'm the director of recruitment
- [00:01:22.880]here at the University of Nebraska
- [00:01:23.990]for Inter-fraternity Council,
- [00:01:25.890]and what I'm gonna be telling you today
- [00:01:27.290]is how to join a fraternity.
- [00:01:28.980]So there's an online interest form
- [00:01:30.040]that you're gonna fill out that shares your information
- [00:01:31.710]with all the chapters here on campus.
- [00:01:33.890]It's open recruitment here,
- [00:01:35.060]which means that all fraternities rush all year round,
- [00:01:38.470]no matter the time of year.
- [00:01:40.770]Fraternities may reach out when inviting you.
- [00:01:42.760]You can reach out to them as well.
- [00:01:44.030]It's mutual contact.
- [00:01:45.810]When joining a fraternity,
- [00:01:47.100]you really wanna think about your values
- [00:01:48.490]and if you are the right fit into the fraternity.
- [00:01:50.630]You also wanna ask the questions as contracts, meal plans,
- [00:01:55.980]other things that you need to do
- [00:01:56.880]throughout the semester, time commitments.
- [00:01:58.800]There's just endless opportunities
- [00:01:59.880]and this is your time to ask questions.
- [00:02:02.070]Hi, my name's Kyle Schroeder,
- [00:02:03.390]and I'm the director of philanthropy
- [00:02:04.560]and community service for IFC.
- [00:02:06.060]Today, I have a couple of tips and tricks
- [00:02:07.650]for you to remember
- [00:02:08.483]while you're doing your new member recruitment.
- [00:02:10.530]First, be yourself, be authentic, and be honest
- [00:02:13.940]with what you're looking for in a chapter.
- [00:02:16.640]PNM should always RSVP to their events,
- [00:02:18.990]that way chapters know who to expect.
- [00:02:21.220]Please do not touch chapter items.
- [00:02:22.870]Some of those items hold a lot of value to them.
- [00:02:25.260]Ask about finances, study hours,
- [00:02:27.320]and the time commitment that you may be signing up for.
- [00:02:30.220]Be on time to events and always have fun.
- [00:02:33.880]During the bidding process,
- [00:02:34.940]there will be two bid cards for the student,
- [00:02:37.100]the chapter declaration of interest
- [00:02:39.120]and the university online bid card.
- [00:02:41.020]Bids are given by the chapter to the PNM
- [00:02:43.380]and then that PNM has three options,
- [00:02:45.470]to accept, to hold, or to decline the bid.
- [00:02:48.560]Many fraternities do not recruit in the spring.
- [00:02:51.320]Hi, my name is Daniel Liebsack,
- [00:02:52.780]and I'm the director of finance and administration
- [00:02:54.890]for the IFC at UNL.
- [00:02:56.900]Today, I'm going to be talking to you guys
- [00:02:58.240]about chapter dues.
- [00:02:59.410]One thing I wanna bring attention to
- [00:03:00.840]is the fact that not all chapters at UNL are housed,
- [00:03:05.660]so this will therefore affect the cost of the dues.
- [00:03:08.410]An average cost to live in a chapter house
- [00:03:10.100]ranges from about 7,000 to 13,500 per year,
- [00:03:13.520]and an average cost of a non-housed
- [00:03:15.160]or an out-of-house member is around 1,500 to 2,500.
- [00:03:19.890]The cost difference is usually due
- [00:03:21.200]to including meal plans, their room, Wi-Fi,
- [00:03:23.780]study materials, cleaning materials, and parking.
- [00:03:26.610]Another thing to keep in mind
- [00:03:27.840]is that if you are planning to live
- [00:03:29.150]in a university-approved fraternity house,
- [00:03:31.050]you will be signing contracts,
- [00:03:32.540]so please make sure to learn
- [00:03:34.110]about all the cancellation processes
- [00:03:35.660]and refund policies of those contracts.
- [00:03:38.170]Additionally, you might have to cancel
- [00:03:39.630]your housing contract online with the residence halls,
- [00:03:43.290]and you can do that on your portal view,
- [00:03:44.490]your MyRED account.
- [00:03:45.950]Hi, my name's Mark Nusterer,
- [00:03:47.037]and I'm the director of strategy and public relations
- [00:03:49.540]for the IFC.
- [00:03:50.730]A big part of joining college is learning new things,
- [00:03:53.100]and we wanna help you with that.
- [00:03:54.740]And to do so,
- [00:03:55.573]we've developed a pioneering HuskerMan education program
- [00:03:58.510]that will teach you in the first days
- [00:04:00.200]of your college career how to be a good fraternity man
- [00:04:03.470]and man, in general.
- [00:04:04.870]This program on August 19th will help
- [00:04:07.060]to discuss various topics
- [00:04:08.660]retaining to both fraternity life and university life.
- [00:04:12.520]Additionally, you will likely undergo
- [00:04:14.220]a chapter education program with your individual chapter
- [00:04:17.270]that talks about your chapter history, the campus history,
- [00:04:20.480]general life skills, and leadership building.
- [00:04:23.450]As Colton mentioned, here at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:04:26.010]we do rush year round,
- [00:04:27.670]but the majority of the rushing and recruitment
- [00:04:29.500]happens in the summer.
- [00:04:30.940]That said, a lot of chapters do still recruit
- [00:04:33.310]in the spring and in the fall,
- [00:04:35.210]but these depend on the chapters
- [00:04:36.890]and whether or not they recruit
- [00:04:38.340]and how large the recruitment classes are depend heavily
- [00:04:41.300]on the chapters that you might be interested in.
- [00:04:43.530]To make sure that you could still rush
- [00:04:45.180]during the fall or during the spring,
- [00:04:47.030]reach out to the individual chapters you're interested in.
- [00:04:49.600]And as always, if you have questions, feel free
- [00:04:51.910]to contact the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
