- [00:00:00.260]All right. Thank you, Nick.
- [00:00:01.306]Delighted to be joined by the chancellor
- [00:00:02.340]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:04.260]When folks think about baseball around the university,
- [00:00:07.170]they of course, they think of Haymarket Park.
- [00:00:09.150]But the University of Nebraska Press
- [00:00:11.040]also knows its baseball.
- [00:00:12.560]How does The Press stack up in the baseball book
- [00:00:15.220]publishing world, chancellor?
- [00:00:16.960]Well, Greg, the University of Nebraska Press
- [00:00:19.760]has certainly grown into what we would think of
- [00:00:22.040]as kind of a powerhouse of baseball book publishing.
- [00:00:25.226]The Press first of all,
- [00:00:26.187]and a lot of people don't know about
- [00:00:28.030]the University of Nebraska Press,
- [00:00:29.580]but it is one of the top university presses in the country.
- [00:00:34.100]Lots and lots of people from all over higher education
- [00:00:36.830]come to publish their work here
- [00:00:38.380]with the University of Nebraska Press
- [00:00:39.990]and we're very, very proud of it.
- [00:00:41.770]But six times in the past decade,
- [00:00:44.890]books from the university press have claimed the society
- [00:00:47.770]for American Baseball Research's annual Seymour Medal.
- [00:00:51.930]That's their top national award
- [00:00:53.970]for a book on baseball history
- [00:00:55.870]or a biography about a player in baseball.
- [00:01:00.670]Three University of Nebraska Press publications
- [00:01:04.120]this year were named finalists in that competition,
- [00:01:07.165]including the Seymour Medal winner this year,
- [00:01:10.820]Steven Treder's biography on baseball owner,
- [00:01:14.610]Horace Stoneham,
- [00:01:16.090]who moved the New York Giants to San Francisco.
- [00:01:19.300]So I'm very, very pleased about that
- [00:01:21.860]for the University of Nebraska Press
- [00:01:23.670]and for that award this year.
- [00:01:25.690]Along with books, the university press publishes
- [00:01:29.560]what's known as "NINE",
- [00:01:31.010]a journal of baseball history and culture,
- [00:01:33.580]and they also published the Baseball Research Journal.
- [00:01:36.310]So quite a lot of kind of baseball depth, if you will,
- [00:01:39.880]right here at our University of Nebraska Press.
- [00:01:44.732]I would just draw attention for the listeners out there
- [00:01:48.330]to the University of Nebraska Catalog.
- [00:01:49.900]You can go online, you can find it.
- [00:01:51.100]It is a wide array of books
- [00:01:54.240]that are published annually by The Press.
- [00:01:56.090]And we're very, very proud of that institution
- [00:01:57.930]here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:59.400]That is fascinating.
- [00:02:00.500]It's something that I was not aware of.
- [00:02:02.330]So I'm glad you were able to point that out to us.
- [00:02:04.060]Well, it's certainly been a busy week, finals week.
- [00:02:05.920]You had graduation wrapped up
- [00:02:07.160]just a short time ago at the stadium.
- [00:02:08.999]What about some of the highlights
- [00:02:10.360]for this big weekend on campus?
- [00:02:12.227]Well, we started the finals week earlier this week,
- [00:02:15.460]and it was like summertime in Nebraska,
- [00:02:17.730]again, with 90 degree temperatures
- [00:02:19.880]and feeling like that summer had certainly arrived.
- [00:02:22.560]And then today, big day.
- [00:02:25.320]Yesterday, we had graduate commencement
- [00:02:27.870]for our master's and PhD candidates.
- [00:02:31.230]They've completed their degrees
- [00:02:32.740]at Pinnacle Bank Arena, big day there.
- [00:02:35.320]And then earlier today, had our undergraduate commencement,
- [00:02:38.790]which, again, was a record setting commencement for us
- [00:02:41.820]with a record number of degrees granted in our history.
- [00:02:45.860]I'm very, very happy for everyone in Memorial Stadium.
- [00:02:51.280]Last year, we said it was the first time
- [00:02:52.840]we'd ever done that in our history and it was,
- [00:02:54.950]but this was the first time we'd ever done it all at once
- [00:02:57.970]with all of our undergraduate students.
- [00:03:00.470]So very excited about them finishing their degrees
- [00:03:03.880]and doing that successfully,
- [00:03:05.280]even with the challenges of these last couple of years.
- [00:03:08.000]As you think about these students who have graduated,
- [00:03:10.140]that half of their education at our university
- [00:03:13.550]was during the time of the pandemic.
- [00:03:15.950]So hats off to all of them.
- [00:03:19.000]We also had a record number of chancellor scholars
- [00:03:23.410]in our graduating class this year.
- [00:03:26.290]We had 82 students who graduated
- [00:03:29.000]with their undergraduate degree
- [00:03:30.410]that had a perfect academic record, perfect 4.0,
- [00:03:34.430]an A in all graded coursework at UNL or anywhere else
- [00:03:38.720]they may have completed a degree.
- [00:03:41.192]That's almost double what it was three years ago.
- [00:03:45.560]So we're very, very proud of all of that talent
- [00:03:48.560]that is being unleashed on Nebraska and beyond
- [00:03:51.960]from the successful completion
- [00:03:53.700]of degrees across bachelor's, master's, PhDs,
- [00:03:56.650]and law students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:03:59.210]Fantastic.
- [00:04:00.043]Congratulations to all involved, congratulations to you,
- [00:04:02.570]another year in the books here at UNL.
- [00:04:04.768]Great year that we've just finished.
- [00:04:07.060]Looking forward to a great year ahead.
- [00:04:09.570]August will be here before we know it
- [00:04:12.230]when we're welcoming all of our students back to campus
- [00:04:16.700]in that last part of August.
- [00:04:18.370]We'll be overseas playing a little football then too.
- [00:04:21.140]So I'm looking forward to that.
- [00:04:22.280]Good to see you.
- [00:04:23.113]Chancellor Ronnie Green with us here on pregame.
- [00:04:24.380]And we'll be back, first pitch, Huskers and the Illini.
- [00:04:26.888]That's next here on the Huskers Radio Network.
