- [00:00:03.988]Hi there!
- [00:00:05.040]Welcome to Husker Hub Financial Aid
- [00:00:06.730]New Student Enrollment online orientation.
- [00:00:08.760]We're excited to have everyone here
- [00:00:10.481]with us today.
- [00:00:11.411]My name's Dan,
- [00:00:12.742]and I'm a Student Services Specialist in
- [00:00:14.672]Husker Hub here with my co-presenter.
- [00:00:16.853]Hi, I'm Brisly Carrera, and I'm
- [00:00:18.713]also a Student Services Specialist
- [00:00:20.413]here at Husker Hub.
- [00:00:21.819]And here in Husker Hub it's our mission
- [00:00:23.729]with this financial aid orientation
- [00:00:25.479]to have students and parents alike
- [00:00:27.139]become acquainted with the essentials
- [00:00:28.919]of what Husker Hub is
- [00:00:30.069]and how students can accept and
- [00:00:32.199]report their financial aid
- [00:00:34.539]as well as what to know about federal
- [00:00:36.619]student and parent loan aid,
- [00:00:38.039]how to read and pay a consolidated bill,
- [00:00:40.529]and as well where students can get
- [00:00:42.149]information pertaining to on-campus
- [00:00:44.019]employment opportunities vis-a-vis the
- [00:00:46.119]Federal Work Study employment program
- [00:00:48.069]based on need from the FAFSA.
- [00:00:49.999]So without further ado,
- [00:00:51.289]I'll go ahead and duck out briefly here.
- [00:00:53.209]I'll return for the latter half
- [00:00:54.689]of this presentation so that Brisly
- [00:00:56.409]can jump in for the first portion.
- [00:00:58.029]And I'll see you soon!
- [00:00:59.263]So to begin, I'll tell you a little bit
- [00:01:01.123]about what Husker Hub is about
- [00:01:02.573]and what we do at our office.
- [00:01:03.953]We are where students go to handle
- [00:01:05.640]the business of being a Husker.
- [00:01:07.120]So students and parents can get questions
- [00:01:09.300]answered about their student bill,
- [00:01:11.020]scholarships, and financial aid,
- [00:01:12.560]as well as course registration and
- [00:01:14.550]academic transcripts just to name
- [00:01:16.380]a few things. We're usually a good
- [00:01:18.560]place to get started if you aren't sure
- [00:01:21.590]which office to reach out to.
- [00:01:23.230]We can always put you in the right direction.
- [00:01:27.183]To begin, today, I'll be going over
- [00:01:28.863]how to accept your financial aid.
- [00:01:31.073]And this is very important to do over over the summer.
- [00:01:34.073]The first thing that you're going to be
- [00:01:36.453]doing is logging into MyRED
- [00:01:38.503]and you will click the "Accept/Decline Awards"
- [00:01:42.503]under the Financial Aid menu
- [00:01:44.483]in that red bar that goes across the screen.
- [00:01:48.430]Once you've selected that,
- [00:01:50.103]you will be brought to this page
- [00:01:52.073]with your rights and responsibilities.
- [00:01:54.513]It's very important to read this section
- [00:01:57.483]as it goes over the rights and responsibilities
- [00:02:00.512]of using federal, state, and institutional financial aid.
- [00:02:04.987]There is a lot of important information
- [00:02:07.097]such as what aid eligibility there is out there
- [00:02:11.097]and how maybe adding other financial aid
- [00:02:15.097]can affect or reduce other aid in the future.
- [00:02:19.097]So, if you do ever have any specific
- [00:02:20.837]questions about adding additional aid
- [00:02:23.107]and how that might affect your current
- [00:02:25.017]financial aid, you can just reach out to our office.
- [00:02:29.665]Furthermore, you will also see this
- [00:02:31.905]scholarships and applying for aid section.
- [00:02:34.886]On the scholarships, it's important to
- [00:02:37.086]note some may require a scholarship
- [00:02:39.076]thank you that needs to be completed on MyRED.
- [00:02:42.026]And you'll be notified of that if that's
- [00:02:45.786]something that you have to do.
- [00:02:47.466]As well as for federal aid, being aware
- [00:02:49.776]that you do have to reapply annually
- [00:02:52.526]for financial aid and for most scholarships.
- [00:02:55.216]And lastly, this other important section
- [00:02:57.916]of the rights and responsibilities
- [00:02:59.970]gives information about enrollment for
- [00:03:02.020]students and how some scholarships and
- [00:03:05.290]most federal financial aid may require
- [00:03:07.110]full-time status, which is 12 credits.
- [00:03:09.777]So it's important to read over that
- [00:03:12.017]information and how making any changes to
- [00:03:14.287]enrollment can impact financial aid.
- [00:03:16.953]So we always recommend reaching out to our
- [00:03:19.243]office if you do ever plan to make
- [00:03:21.003]enrollment changes reach out to us first
- [00:03:23.994]so we can go over any potential impact to aid.
- [00:03:27.354]Furthermore, they do touch on
- [00:03:29.331]Satisfactory Academic Progress.
- [00:03:31.291]There is a hyperlink here that takes you
- [00:03:33.421]to the webpage on the Financial Aid
- [00:03:35.661]website explaining what Satisfactory
- [00:03:37.821]Academic Progress is and the academic
- [00:03:40.501]requirements that students need to
- [00:03:42.586]maintain while at the University of
- [00:03:44.596]Nebraska-Lincoln. And lastly, they go
- [00:03:46.556]over disbursements and how if there is
- [00:03:48.996]ever excess funding a student will
- [00:03:51.326]have refunds but just making sure
- [00:03:53.266]everything is paid when those refunds come through.
- [00:03:59.888]Speaking of disbursement, we do have
- [00:04:01.998]disbursement dates. The first round of
- [00:04:04.338]disbursement will occur approximately
- [00:04:06.578]one week before the start of each semester.
- [00:04:09.409]All financial aid will first go towards
- [00:04:11.530]covering direct expenses: tuition, fees,
- [00:04:13.910]housing, and meals on the student bill in MyRED.
- [00:04:18.825]And if the disbursed financial aid exceeds
- [00:04:20.995]the billed amount, a refund will be ordered.
- [00:04:23.595]We recommend enrolling in direct deposit
- [00:04:25.655]in MyRED for the most secure and
- [00:04:27.478]quickest delivery method when a student
- [00:04:29.798]does have a refund.
- [00:04:33.006]Now, students may have received
- [00:04:34.946]external scholarships from their
- [00:04:36.720]community or their high school.
- [00:04:38.790]And so it's very important that they do
- [00:04:40.709]report these external scholarships.
- [00:04:42.869]To do so, they will need to go into their
- [00:04:45.139]MyRED again and hover over the
- [00:04:47.289]"Financial Aid" tab and click the
- [00:04:49.769]"Report Other Aid" option in that menu.
- [00:04:53.769]Once they do, they will be brought to this page.
- [00:04:56.499]If they have reported any awards already,
- [00:04:58.839]they will show. If not, they can add the award there.
- [00:05:03.409]Once they select the "Add Award" button,
- [00:05:05.779]they will be brought to this page.
- [00:05:08.133]And so self-reported scholarships
- [00:05:10.583]will not show up immediately on your financial aid package.
- [00:05:14.720]You'll be able to select the type of aid
- [00:05:17.600]as well as the description and how much
- [00:05:20.170]the scholarship value is.
- [00:05:22.620]It is important to not report private
- [00:05:24.530]loans in this area, there is a separate process for that.
- [00:05:29.269]Now to talk about federal student loans,
- [00:05:31.369]I will be passing it over to Dan
- [00:05:32.929]who has important information to share
- [00:05:35.149]as well as just other things to know
- [00:05:37.279]before getting started in the Fall.
- [00:05:39.643]Thank you, Brisly, for covering a lot of
- [00:05:41.553]that great information.
- [00:05:43.040]Transitioning now to everyone's favorite
- [00:05:44.960]topic is federal student loans.
- [00:05:46.933]Parents who are watching this,
- [00:05:48.853]if the student is planning to take out
- [00:05:50.703]a federal subsidized or an unsubsidized
- [00:05:52.723]loan, or if you, as the parent, are
- [00:05:54.393]looking to apply for a Parent PLUS Loan,
- [00:05:56.323]there are some additional steps that must
- [00:05:58.273]be completed before any of those federal
- [00:06:00.213]student loans can be disbursed towards
- [00:06:02.053]your student's consolidated bill
- [00:06:03.683]each academic semester.
- [00:06:04.823]Students should be sure to complete
- [00:06:06.493]their Federal Entrance Counseling at
- [00:06:08.233]studentaid.gov at the link indicated
- [00:06:09.993]on this slide and also as well must
- [00:06:11.718]complete a Master Promissory Note on the
- [00:06:13.628]same website for all federal student loans.
- [00:06:15.778]Essentially, Entrance Counseling is a
- [00:06:17.628]requirement for students to test
- [00:06:19.778]their knowledge regarding what the
- [00:06:21.447]foundation of student loans are and a
- [00:06:23.276]Master Promissory Note is to make sure
- [00:06:25.116]that they are indicating two important
- [00:06:27.196]people in their lives who they can be in
- [00:06:29.146]contact with their Student Loan Servicer
- [00:06:31.076]for after graduating in the event
- [00:06:32.701]they do not come through on their
- [00:06:34.291]responsibilities to pay their federal student loans.
- [00:06:36.974]For parents, if a parent is intent on
- [00:06:38.844]borrowing a Parent PLUS Loan,
- [00:06:40.554]they must also complete their own Master
- [00:06:43.104]Promissory Note after completing and being
- [00:06:45.994]approved through the PLUS Loan application.
- [00:06:48.140]For the parent themselves, they would
- [00:06:50.160]indicate two relatives, family, friends
- [00:06:52.360]that they would want to have contacted in
- [00:06:54.840]the event that they do not pay towards
- [00:06:57.030]their Federal Parent PLUS Loan.
- [00:06:59.128]That Parent PLUS Loan Master Promissory
- [00:07:01.088]Note can be completed after the PLUS Loan
- [00:07:03.167]Application is completed at studentaid.gov
- [00:07:05.707]at the link provided on the slide as well.
- [00:07:08.527]Now transitioning over to how the bill
- [00:07:10.377]will appear for students for the Fall 2022
- [00:07:12.867]academic semester.
- [00:07:15.206]The Fall 2022 balance will be available
- [00:07:17.456]to students in their MyRED portals.
- [00:07:19.646]The first Fall 2022 balance bill statement
- [00:07:22.096]will come due September 12th.
- [00:07:25.166]Any and all billing notifications and
- [00:07:26.956]due date reminders will be sent to the
- [00:07:28.792]student's Huskers email address only.
- [00:07:30.962]Parents, be mindful that you will not
- [00:07:32.862]receive a communication via email
- [00:07:34.512]concerning when the bill drops or when
- [00:07:36.362]the payment due date is.
- [00:07:37.978]For monthly bills, those are accessible
- [00:07:39.978]on or before the 25th of each month.
- [00:07:42.430]The first semester bill is usually
- [00:07:44.058]available in August for the Fall semester,
- [00:07:46.468]or in January for the Spring semester.
- [00:07:48.823]It is possible for a student to have a
- [00:07:50.653]bill due each month if they have assessed
- [00:07:52.613]charges from areas on campus that they're
- [00:07:54.763]utilizing their NCard or maybe going
- [00:07:57.073]through and getting parking permits.
- [00:07:59.985]If there are other charges that are
- [00:08:01.729]assessed from other departments, it is a
- [00:08:03.849]student's responsibility to make sure they
- [00:08:05.869]are checking their MyRED and their
- [00:08:07.638]"View Bill" page under the "Student Accounts" tab
- [00:08:09.922]for confirmation of any of those bill charges.
- [00:08:12.062]Those usually will appear monthly, usually
- [00:08:14.192]around the 15th.
- [00:08:15.686]But once those monthly bills are available
- [00:08:17.686]on or before the 25th of each month is
- [00:08:19.516]when a student can plan to make payments
- [00:08:22.046]for that next month for the 12th as bill
- [00:08:25.661]payments are due every 12th each month.
- [00:08:27.591]If payments are not received by the
- [00:08:29.383]payment due date, sanctions may apply.
- [00:08:31.803]Sanctions can range anywhere from a block
- [00:08:33.773]on housing privileges and access to
- [00:08:36.773]certain amenities on campus.
- [00:08:39.133]Most importantly, it does prevent
- [00:08:41.427]registration for future semesters up to a
- [00:08:44.017]certain amount of a past due balance.
- [00:08:46.037]it is important for students to reach out
- [00:08:48.066]to Husker Hub if they have concerns about
- [00:08:50.027]not being able to pay towards their
- [00:08:51.767]student bill by the payment due date
- [00:08:53.587]or if they need to look into assistance
- [00:08:55.493]options concerning either their financial
- [00:08:57.483]aid or payment agreement options that a
- [00:08:59.703]Husker Hub Specialist would be able to
- [00:09:01.543]discuss with them.
- [00:09:02.746]Now, how to read your consolidated student bill.
- [00:09:04.996]Students, there is a go.unl.edu link on
- [00:09:07.476]this page that you can refer to that has
- [00:09:09.616]some screenshots that break down what each
- [00:09:11.616]line item on the bill means.
- [00:09:13.666]There is also a helpful Husker Hub Explains video
- [00:09:15.986]on how you can read your consolidated
- [00:09:17.916]student bill that I would encourage
- [00:09:19.596]students to watch as well on our
- [00:09:21.226]Husker Hub Explains portal on the
- [00:09:22.796]huskerhub.unl.edu website.
- [00:09:25.612]For how to go about paying the monthly
- [00:09:27.632]consolidated bill, there are some online
- [00:09:29.585]payment options that are available 24/7
- [00:09:31.775]such as an online check option through the
- [00:09:33.805]CashNet portal as well as a credit/debit
- [00:09:35.835]card payment function in the CashNet
- [00:09:37.935]portal as well.
- [00:09:39.532]Foreign currency payments are also to be
- [00:09:41.572]processed through the UNL e-payment portal.
- [00:09:45.656]And it will launch through the Western
- [00:09:47.826]Union payment systems website.
- [00:09:50.046]Credit/debit card options for payment:
- [00:09:52.046]just be mindful of, parents and students,
- [00:09:54.006]that non-refundable convenience fee of
- [00:09:55.836]2.75% that will apply towards any balance
- [00:09:58.316]that you're paying towards your student's account.
- [00:10:01.280]Other payment options, of course, do
- [00:10:03.018]include personal checks, college savings
- [00:10:05.318]plan payments, 529 Plan payments,
- [00:10:07.472]bank bill pay, money order, and cashier's checks.
- [00:10:10.632]Of course, with all checks that are being
- [00:10:12.625]mailed or dropped off in-person,
- [00:10:14.465]we do please ask that the UNL student NUID
- [00:10:18.025]number is put in the memo line.
- [00:10:20.135]The eight digit student ID number should
- [00:10:22.075]be affixed to that memo line with the
- [00:10:23.849]student's name indicated there as well.
- [00:10:26.443]And then just be mindful of is that we do
- [00:10:28.673]not accept credit/debit card payments
- [00:10:30.453]in-person or via phone.
- [00:10:32.172]I do want to briefly mention here
- [00:10:33.761]on the Husker Payment Plan option for students.
- [00:10:36.157]So the Husker Payment Plan is UNL's only
- [00:10:38.517]sanction payment plan option for students.
- [00:10:40.887]And it is an option that allows them
- [00:10:42.637]to divide their full cost of a semester's
- [00:10:44.597]balance into three monthly payments.
- [00:10:46.761]Of course, the first payment would be due
- [00:10:48.741]upon enrollment into the Husker Payment Plan.
- [00:10:51.131]Subsequent payments would be due
- [00:10:52.681]on respectfully October 12th of the Fall
- [00:10:55.001]semester and November 12th.
- [00:10:56.991]And for the Fall 2022 enrollment period,
- [00:11:00.001]it is August 25th through September 12th.
- [00:11:02.831]So students must be enrolled in the Husker
- [00:11:04.929]Payment Plan by that payment first due
- [00:11:06.979]date of September 12th.
- [00:11:08.717]With that first 1/3 payment, please be
- [00:11:10.797]mindful that there is a $20 non-refundable
- [00:11:12.977]enrollment fee per semester that a
- [00:11:14.787]student enrolls in the Husker Payment Plan.
- [00:11:16.783]Husker Payment Plan students, like I
- [00:11:18.573]mentioned before, can register for the
- [00:11:20.423]plan by hovering over the "Student
- [00:11:22.063]Accounts" tab in MyRED and clicking the
- [00:11:23.943]"Husker Payment Plan" in the important section.
- [00:11:26.335]Students must and are required to enroll
- [00:11:28.275]in the plan in the beginning of each
- [00:11:30.005]academic semester, so it does not carry over.
- [00:11:32.645]Students per semester do have to enroll
- [00:11:34.635]into it between Fall and then again in
- [00:11:36.645]the Spring semester.
- [00:11:37.915]Federal Work Study, as you can see on the
- [00:11:39.875]slide, is an award that is not to be
- [00:11:41.615]disbursed to the student bill.
- [00:11:43.115]So Federal Work Study is based on need
- [00:11:44.945]from the FAFSA.
- [00:11:46.155]Students that are eligible for Federal
- [00:11:47.965]Work Study will see an indicator on their
- [00:11:50.015]financial aid award package indicating
- [00:11:51.967]the amount of $1,500 per semester, which
- [00:11:54.527]is a total of $3,000 per academic year
- [00:11:57.293]that can be awarded and put towards their
- [00:11:59.963]bill as long as they actually work on campus.
- [00:12:03.451]So that second bullet point here does
- [00:12:05.211]state that Federal Work Study is an
- [00:12:06.907]on-campus job where students get paid
- [00:12:08.747]directly via direct deposit
- [00:12:10.517]bi-weekly on the University's payroll system.
- [00:12:13.127]This is not money that's automatically
- [00:12:14.997]applied to the bill, much like how a
- [00:12:16.920]federal student loan would be or a federal
- [00:12:19.170]grant or an institutional grant or scholarship.
- [00:12:21.700]These funds do not go and aren't to be
- [00:12:24.100]anticipated to be put towards the bill,
- [00:12:25.991]but students can work and receive that
- [00:12:28.361]money via direct deposit bi-weekly through
- [00:12:30.541]their UNL on campus Federal Work Study
- [00:12:32.481]position for and to be used for other
- [00:12:35.041]expenses that aren't appearing on the
- [00:12:36.831]bill or they can be used and set aside
- [00:12:38.741]for future semester charges.
- [00:12:40.471]Should students have question about
- [00:12:42.141]Federal Work Study, or even federal
- [00:12:44.409]opportunities for assistance through the
- [00:12:46.629]Handshake portal, that is go.unl.edu/handshake
- [00:12:49.889]where a student can learn more about
- [00:12:51.659]opportunities for Federal Work Study jobs
- [00:12:53.612]as well as student worker position if they
- [00:12:55.642]are not eligible for Federal Work Study
- [00:12:57.512]based on need from the FAFSA.
- [00:12:58.983]And we here at Husker Hub do employ both.
- [00:13:01.163]We have Federal Work Study recipient
- [00:13:02.923]students as well as student work positions.
- [00:13:04.983]So if a student is inquiring
- [00:13:06.823]about their federal financial aid
- [00:13:08.493]or wanting to take control
- [00:13:09.853]of their financial academic trajectory
- [00:13:11.793]and are curious about financial aid,
- [00:13:13.508]please have them maybe consider coming
- [00:13:15.319]to work for us here at Husker Hub.
- [00:13:17.265]Well, that was an invigorating as well as
- [00:13:19.215]informative presentation if I don't say so
- [00:13:21.245]myself, Brisly.
- [00:13:22.185]I just want to thank Brisly as my
- [00:13:23.995]co-presenter for being able to do this on
