- [00:00:01.310]Hi, everyone.
- [00:00:02.143]Thank you so much for joining me today
- [00:00:03.900]to learn a little bit more
- [00:00:04.900]about the Panhellenic sorority experience
- [00:00:07.000]and to get some questions answered
- [00:00:08.800]about the Panhellenic sorority recruitment experience
- [00:00:10.930]for this fall.
- [00:00:13.130]Now, typically you would be hearing
- [00:00:14.770]from Mia Pancoe and Taylor Peltz.
- [00:00:17.430]Both of these women are members of
- [00:00:18.840]our Panhellenic Association
- [00:00:20.480]and serve as the leads of our recruitment team.
- [00:00:22.730]But since the two of them weren't available,
- [00:00:24.790]you're hearing from me, Leigh Thiedeman,
- [00:00:26.610]the director of fraternity and sorority life.
- [00:00:28.780]I oversee our office in the fraternity-sorority community
- [00:00:32.000]and I work most closely with the Panhellenic Association,
- [00:00:34.550]supporting them with all of their projects and events
- [00:00:37.050]including sorority recruitment.
- [00:00:40.223]So you're here today to learn a little bit more
- [00:00:42.380]about the Panhellenic community.
- [00:00:43.930]We wanna make sure you understand that
- [00:00:45.420]there are actually four councils that make up
- [00:00:47.240]the fraternity and sorority community
- [00:00:49.070]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:50.940]And while there are four councils and four distinct ways
- [00:00:53.760]of finding membership in our organizations,
- [00:00:56.470]we do function as one community overall.
- [00:00:59.200]So our other councils include
- [00:01:01.030]the Inter-Fraternity Council, or IFC.
- [00:01:03.580]They have 24 chapters.
- [00:01:05.000]18 of those chapters do have facilities on or around campus.
- [00:01:09.688]We have our Multicultural Greek Council, or our MGC.
- [00:01:13.430]There are eight chapters that are a part of MGC.
- [00:01:16.100]This includes both fraternities and sororities.
- [00:01:18.710]And we have Asian interests, Latinx interests,
- [00:01:21.398]and multicultural Greek organizations
- [00:01:23.950]that are a part of this council.
- [00:01:26.150]We also have our National Panhellenic Council, or NPHC.
- [00:01:29.330]There are five chapters that are part of this council,
- [00:01:32.010]both fraternities and sororities, and these are our
- [00:01:34.370]historically Black Greek organizations on campus.
- [00:01:37.470]And finally, the Panhellenic Association
- [00:01:39.510]are what you're here to learn more about today.
- [00:01:41.500]We have 15 chapters that are a part of
- [00:01:43.497]the Panhellenic Association, or PHA,
- [00:01:46.167]and 13 of those organizations do have
- [00:01:47.861]chapter facilities on campus.
- [00:01:52.150]A little bit more information about Panhellenic
- [00:01:54.100]by the numbers.
- [00:01:55.210]So we've got just over 4,200 members
- [00:01:58.050]in the fraternity and sorority life community here at UNL.
- [00:02:01.600]2300 of those are members of the Panhellenic community.
- [00:02:05.000]So we will often tell people
- [00:02:06.190]this is the largest women's organization here on campus.
- [00:02:09.830]More than 740 members are living in
- [00:02:12.526]Panhellenic chapter facilities.
- [00:02:14.440]Again, I mentioned earlier, we have 13 of our organizations
- [00:02:17.250]that have chapter facilities.
- [00:02:18.792]We make up, the Panhellenic Association,
- [00:02:21.060]about 24% of the undergraduate female population on campus.
- [00:02:24.573]So almost one in four female-identifying folks
- [00:02:28.696]that you'll see walking around campus
- [00:02:30.410]are a part of the Panhellenic community.
- [00:02:32.830]We have 15 Panhellenic organizations,
- [00:02:34.960]and we are always proud to point out that
- [00:02:36.856]we have very high GPAs in our community.
- [00:02:39.970]So we sat at a 3.464
- [00:02:42.111]was the all-Greek female GPA for fall of 2021.
- [00:02:47.776]So each of our organizations
- [00:02:49.580]that are part of the Panhellenic Association
- [00:02:51.360]have their own core values,
- [00:02:52.690]and that's what they use when making membership decisions.
- [00:02:55.740]We also have overarching values
- [00:02:57.290]in the fraternity and sorority community
- [00:02:58.700]and we wanted to make sure we highlighted those for you.
- [00:03:00.800]So, the first is academic achievement.
- [00:03:03.630]We wanna make sure we're clear that
- [00:03:05.010]our sorority members are students first.
- [00:03:06.810]That's what brings them to the university,
- [00:03:08.670]and that remains a really important focus
- [00:03:10.811]throughout their experience in the chapters.
- [00:03:13.680]Leadership development is our second value.
- [00:03:15.670]There are so many ways to become a leader
- [00:03:17.300]in the Panhellenic Council, whether that's
- [00:03:18.940]participating in the Emerging Leaders program,
- [00:03:22.330]that's deciding to be on a a committee
- [00:03:24.050]or in an executive council position within the chapter.
- [00:03:26.314]You could also serve on the Panhellenic Association
- [00:03:29.540]like Taylor and Mia do running our recruitment process.
- [00:03:32.620]So, so many different ways to become a leader
- [00:03:34.550]within the community.
- [00:03:35.710]That doesn't even mention all of the ways
- [00:03:37.630]our members are involved in organizations
- [00:03:40.530]that are not a part of the community.
- [00:03:42.830]Civic engagement is of course the heart of our experience
- [00:03:45.630]within fraternity and sorority life.
- [00:03:47.320]Our students make a difference
- [00:03:48.460]through philanthropy, community service, and advocacy.
- [00:03:51.270]So that means raising money for
- [00:03:53.470]different organizations they feel passionately about,
- [00:03:55.720]using their hands and giving back of hours and their time
- [00:04:00.460]in the local community,
- [00:04:01.900]and also advocacy, which is raising awareness
- [00:04:04.590]about a particular issue.
- [00:04:06.830]The fourth value is community and belonging.
- [00:04:08.800]So we always say the best part about joining a sorority
- [00:04:11.270]is the sisterhood.
- [00:04:12.400]We know how important community and belonging is
- [00:04:14.693]to student success in college,
- [00:04:16.870]and finding your people or finding your crew within
- [00:04:20.270]those first six weeks of your time at an institution
- [00:04:23.480]leads to higher graduation rates,
- [00:04:25.180]it leads to better persistence
- [00:04:26.550]throughout the collegiate experience.
- [00:04:28.220]And we're really proud that we have high retention rates
- [00:04:31.220]between the first year and second year experience.
- [00:04:33.400]If you join one of our Panhellenic Associations,
- [00:04:36.150]the overall retention rate for UNL is at an 85%
- [00:04:38.363]from first year to second year, which is great.
- [00:04:41.248]But I will tell you, it's just over 94%
- [00:04:43.298]within the Panhellenic Association
- [00:04:45.500]that we will retain our folks within UNL
- [00:04:49.390]from first year to second year.
- [00:04:51.060]We also see our graduation rates are about 10 points higher
- [00:04:54.200]than those of students who are not affiliated
- [00:04:56.080]with the fraternity and sorority community.
- [00:04:58.380]And then finally, inclusive excellence is our last value.
- [00:05:01.040]We believe anyone can find a home in our community
- [00:05:03.240]if they keep their options open.
- [00:05:04.820]We mentioned earlier, we have four different councils.
- [00:05:06.820]There's four distinct ways of joining our community,
- [00:05:09.304]but we know if people
- [00:05:10.550]keep their their hearts and their minds open,
- [00:05:12.770]that they can find a place within our community.
- [00:05:17.610]So sharing some information that came from
- [00:05:20.120]a 2021 Gallup survey that surveyed
- [00:05:22.286]all kinds of collegiate graduates,
- [00:05:24.400]including those affiliated with fraternity-sorority life
- [00:05:26.810]and those who were unaffiliated,
- [00:05:28.610]we know having taken a look at these results that
- [00:05:31.380]those affiliated with fraternities or sororities in college
- [00:05:34.670]listed that they had great college experiences,
- [00:05:36.517]they felt more prepared for life after college,
- [00:05:39.450]and they're more likely to be thriving in their wellbeing.
- [00:05:42.712]Additionally, 84% of those surveyed of the affiliated alumni
- [00:05:47.670]said if they had to do it all over again,
- [00:05:50.070]they would still join their fraternity or sorority.
- [00:05:52.680]So that says something.
- [00:05:54.443]And I have no doubt that we're seeing that
- [00:05:55.590]within our community here.
- [00:05:58.621]So a little bit more about
- [00:06:00.300]our different recruitment processes
- [00:06:01.700]that we have for joining our community.
- [00:06:03.370]There's actually two ways to join
- [00:06:04.900]the Panhellenic community at UNL.
- [00:06:06.770]One is through the primary recruitment process,
- [00:06:09.170]and then we have a second process called open recruitment.
- [00:06:11.630]We're gonna talk about each of these.
- [00:06:14.710]The primary recruitment process takes place
- [00:06:16.910]in the week before school starts.
- [00:06:18.570]Around 900 women typically participate
- [00:06:20.930]in our fall recruitment experience,
- [00:06:22.550]and this is the only time of year all 15 organizations
- [00:06:25.820]will be taking new members at the same time.
- [00:06:28.360]This fall it's gonna take place Sunday, August 14th,
- [00:06:31.050]that's gonna be move-in,
- [00:06:32.470]through Saturday, August 20th,
- [00:06:34.160]that will be our Bid Day experience.
- [00:06:36.300]Women will need to register on or before July 27th
- [00:06:39.930]to guarantee early move-in.
- [00:06:41.410]That's for folks who are living on campus
- [00:06:43.300]in the residence halls.
- [00:06:45.220]I will tell you as the director,
- [00:06:46.760]almost everyone who participates
- [00:06:48.390]will have an opportunity to join a chapter.
- [00:06:50.920]And if PNMs, that's the potential new members,
- [00:06:53.485]maximize their options throughout the experience,
- [00:06:56.330]they will have a bid at the end of the week.
- [00:07:01.136]We wanted to make sure we share that
- [00:07:03.050]Panhellenic recruitment is strictly values-based.
- [00:07:05.480]You heard me talk earlier about the values of our community.
- [00:07:08.300]Each participant in primary recruitment
- [00:07:10.400]will have the opportunity to identify their core values
- [00:07:13.130]through a variety of activities.
- [00:07:14.860]Once they register for recruitment,
- [00:07:16.450]there's a way for them to do a values assessment
- [00:07:18.410]that will actually narrow down to their top four values.
- [00:07:22.190]Each of the organizations will have access to
- [00:07:24.040]those top four values.
- [00:07:25.080]So as they're having values-based conversations
- [00:07:27.145]they know what's important to your student
- [00:07:28.948]who's going through the process.
- [00:07:30.657]As I already mentioned, we have those five core values
- [00:07:33.690]and then each chapter has
- [00:07:34.970]their own unique set of those values.
- [00:07:36.640]Those are gonna be showcased
- [00:07:37.780]throughout the recruitment experience.
- [00:07:39.630]Our chapter invitations are based on
- [00:07:41.710]those connections made to the values.
- [00:07:43.230]And we have found that this creates
- [00:07:45.220]a stronger bond between our members
- [00:07:46.930]and fosters this positive environment
- [00:07:49.130]to promote personal development and growth.
- [00:07:50.910]That's really important for our organizations.
- [00:07:55.110]So a little bit more about
- [00:07:56.090]what primary recruitment is gonna look like.
- [00:07:58.021]The process occurs the week before
- [00:08:00.330]the start of fall semester.
- [00:08:01.490]I mentioned earlier,
- [00:08:03.262]we're gonna have move-in and PNM orientation,
- [00:08:04.690]again, PNM stands for potential new member,
- [00:08:07.304]on August 14th.
- [00:08:08.592]We do two days of a welcome round.
- [00:08:11.650]So that will be on the 15th and the 16th.
- [00:08:13.650]On the 17th, the chapters will be
- [00:08:16.420]hosting philanthropy round.
- [00:08:17.650]That gives an opportunity for each of our organizations
- [00:08:20.192]to talk about their philanthropies
- [00:08:22.640]and the causes that they care most deeply about.
- [00:08:26.280]August 18th is our sisterhood round.
- [00:08:28.550]This is when our chapters showcase their sisterhood
- [00:08:31.270]and that community and belonging piece
- [00:08:33.050]for each of their organizations.
- [00:08:35.066]This is also a time when potential new members
- [00:08:38.220]going through the process
- [00:08:40.300]can get chapter house tours
- [00:08:41.889]for our chapters that have facilities.
- [00:08:45.096]August 19th will be our preference round.
- [00:08:47.203]It's our most special round.
- [00:08:49.228]Participants can attend up to two chapter events that day.
- [00:08:53.000]And then finally on Saturday, August 20th, we have Bid Day.
- [00:08:55.570]That's where our participants find out
- [00:08:58.730]which organization they've been offered membership to.
- [00:09:00.930]It's a lot of fun.
- [00:09:02.490]It's very exciting.
- [00:09:03.420]They get to attend their Bid Day parties
- [00:09:05.480]at their chapter houses or off campus
- [00:09:07.810]at different event spaces on campus and off campus.
- [00:09:11.360]It's a really fun day
- [00:09:12.397]and a great way to celebrate a long week.
- [00:09:15.200]The best advice that we tell parent and family members
- [00:09:17.480]to keep in mind during this
- [00:09:18.640]is to really encourage your student to
- [00:09:20.560]keep an open mind throughout the process.
- [00:09:22.750]They might meet women on the very first day of recruitment
- [00:09:25.340]and think, "This is the chapter for me.
- [00:09:26.901]I've had a great connection with this one person."
- [00:09:29.610]We try to remind folks that
- [00:09:30.930]that's one person of a chapter of 150, right?
- [00:09:33.456]You wanna make sure you're meeting new women
- [00:09:36.240]every single day, having good conversations
- [00:09:38.220]and getting to know the entire chapter, not just one person.
- [00:09:41.290]So keeping an open mind,
- [00:09:42.820]being willing to give chapters a second look
- [00:09:45.150]is really important through the process.
- [00:09:49.001]So I wanna introduce you to our Rho Gammas,
- [00:09:51.450]or our recruitment guides.
- [00:09:52.870]Your student is gonna have a disaffiliated sorority member
- [00:09:55.600]guide her through the recruitment process.
- [00:09:57.710]I wanna make sure you all know
- [00:09:59.100]your student will not be alone through this process.
- [00:10:01.450]They have an upper class student is going to be with them,
- [00:10:05.070]meeting with them multiple times a day,
- [00:10:07.032]checking in on them through text and in person
- [00:10:09.820]to make sure they know what's going on, they feel supported,
- [00:10:12.950]and they have someone who can answer their questions.
- [00:10:14.700]So they are the best first resource
- [00:10:17.040]for questions during primary recruitment.
- [00:10:19.660]We also wanna make sure
- [00:10:20.600]the Rho Gammas will reach out to students
- [00:10:22.870]as they're registering for recruitment.
- [00:10:25.210]I will tell you, it's probably not the Rho Gamma
- [00:10:27.530]they will be assigned when they come in August,
- [00:10:29.620]but this is one of the Rho Gammas who will reach out
- [00:10:32.150]and say, "Hey, congratulations,
- [00:10:33.790]we just saw you registered for recruitment.
- [00:10:35.700]Just wanna see if you've got any questions right now."
- [00:10:41.060]So as you think about preparing for
- [00:10:42.630]Panhellenic sorority recruitment,
- [00:10:44.090]we wanna let you know that
- [00:10:45.796]our applications are gonna be available starting June 1st
- [00:10:47.750]and they do need to be completed on or before July 27th.
- [00:10:51.260]Now this is because we need to get all of
- [00:10:53.000]the names of women participating in the process
- [00:10:54.784]to our friends in Housing
- [00:10:56.620]because anyone moving in, or excuse me,
- [00:10:59.260]anyone participating does need to move in early.
- [00:11:02.440]So couple things to note here, there is a registration cost,
- [00:11:06.100]and we will need your student's high school transcripts.
- [00:11:08.860]This can be an unofficial high school transcript.
- [00:11:11.610]We do need to do some verification of GPAs, because again,
- [00:11:14.980]academic achievement is so important to our community.
- [00:11:17.800]And then if your student is living on campus,
- [00:11:20.060]they will be registered for early move-in automatically.
- [00:11:22.870]Again, that's why I need to get that list
- [00:11:24.580]to our friends in Housing.
- [00:11:26.220]You do not need to do anything else.
- [00:11:27.770]Your student doesn't need to do anything else with Housing.
- [00:11:30.330]We will make sure they get added to the early move-in list
- [00:11:33.040]and everything will be put together for them.
- [00:11:36.285]Other ways to prepare is to follow us on social media,
- [00:11:39.580]follow all of the organizations,
- [00:11:41.600]and then encourage your student to join us
- [00:11:43.380]at one of our Zoom informationals over the summer.
- [00:11:45.780]It is not required, but a great way for your student
- [00:11:48.330]to be able to ask our recruitment team questions
- [00:11:50.595]and get any of those questions answered
- [00:11:54.220]that they might need.
- [00:11:57.060]So the other process that we have of joining
- [00:11:59.560]is the open recruitment process.
- [00:12:01.280]It's sometimes called informal recruitment.
- [00:12:03.740]The women sometimes call it COB or continuous open bidding.
- [00:12:07.930]So over the past year,
- [00:12:08.930]we had more than 125 women join the sorority community
- [00:12:11.950]through a more informal process.
- [00:12:14.120]COB takes place immediately following primary recruitment
- [00:12:17.660]and usually lasts until the fourth week of the semester.
- [00:12:21.020]Then it starts up again in January
- [00:12:22.355]at the beginning of spring semester,
- [00:12:24.220]and typically, again, is wrapped up by
- [00:12:26.160]that fourth week of the semester.
- [00:12:28.500]Although some chapters are taking members
- [00:12:30.590]throughout the entire year,
- [00:12:31.960]it really just depends on the organization.
- [00:12:34.390]The thing to keep in mind about COB is that
- [00:12:36.917]it's a much more relaxing process.
- [00:12:39.128]You saw we've got multiple days of events
- [00:12:42.070]through primary recruitment.
- [00:12:43.771]COB is much more relaxed and informal.
- [00:12:46.370]They might be going on a coffee date or going on a walk,
- [00:12:48.980]getting to know different members,
- [00:12:50.520]being invited over to join dinner with the members,
- [00:12:54.240]maybe attending a sisterhood event.
- [00:12:56.376]If your student is someone who likes a more relaxed process,
- [00:12:59.490]this is a great way to join the sorority community.
- [00:13:01.976]But again, I wanna note
- [00:13:03.414]not all chapters participate in COB.
- [00:13:05.780]So the plus of primary recruitment is
- [00:13:08.930]that's the only opportunity all 15 of our organizations
- [00:13:12.100]are taking new members at the same time.
- [00:13:14.600]Women can sign up on our website
- [00:13:16.140]if they wanna participate in COB,
- [00:13:17.710]but they can also contact chapters directly on social media
- [00:13:20.960]to get more information about if they're COBing,
- [00:13:23.880]if they have upcoming events.
- [00:13:25.860]And then again, just that reminder that
- [00:13:27.820]not all chapters participate in this process,
- [00:13:30.040]but it's still an awesome way to join
- [00:13:32.216]one of our organizations.
- [00:13:36.590]We wanna make sure we reiterate that
- [00:13:38.300]joining a sorority is a commitment, right?
- [00:13:40.160]It's super fun,
- [00:13:41.340]but there's also commitments that come with it.
- [00:13:43.710]But first is that there's a time commitment.
- [00:13:45.450]being a member of a chapter takes time.
- [00:13:47.470]Some events are required for members to attend
- [00:13:49.730]and some are more optional.
- [00:13:52.520]Definitely during the first semester, there are
- [00:13:54.510]chapter meetings that need to be attended every week.
- [00:13:56.820]There's also new member meetings.
- [00:13:58.730]There'll be different events that are required.
- [00:14:00.560]And so students need to be aware of that right away,
- [00:14:03.100]going in.
- [00:14:04.240]There's also a financial commitment.
- [00:14:05.850]When you join a sorority,
- [00:14:07.420]you do have to pay for different things
- [00:14:08.900]that are a part of the process.
- [00:14:10.720]And each chapter has different fees.
- [00:14:12.580]On the next slide, I'm gonna break this down
- [00:14:14.160]a little bit more for you all.
- [00:14:16.920]There's also a chapter commitment.
- [00:14:18.810]Each of our organizations have different commitments.
- [00:14:21.260]So everyone will have chapter meetings,
- [00:14:22.740]everyone will have new member meetings,
- [00:14:24.190]but each chapter separately
- [00:14:25.590]might have different requirements about
- [00:14:27.550]community service hours or study hours
- [00:14:29.280]or different events that they have planned.
- [00:14:31.570]So those are great questions to ask about
- [00:14:33.950]during the primary recruitment process.
- [00:14:36.264]And then it's also a lifelong commitment.
- [00:14:38.610]This is so much more than a four year experience.
- [00:14:40.320]It's for life.
- [00:14:41.700]Joining a sorority means you're connected to
- [00:14:43.410]your friends that you've met
- [00:14:45.661]and to that organization as an alum,
- [00:14:46.920]and women are gonna be alumni of their organizations
- [00:14:49.490]for much longer than they are collegiate members.
- [00:14:53.624]So a little bit more about this financial commitment.
- [00:14:56.040]We've broken it down here,
- [00:14:57.140]and I wanna make sure you all know
- [00:14:58.760]we do keep this information on our website.
- [00:15:00.810]That's www.unl.edu/greek.
- [00:15:05.760]You can find this information
- [00:15:07.373]about the Panhellenic community.
- [00:15:08.660]We are just in the process of updating it.
- [00:15:10.800]So I would say by mid-June 2022
- [00:15:13.940]we will have our brand new numbers available on our website.
- [00:15:17.269]But here is the breakdown we've taken
- [00:15:20.130]based on last year's numbers.
- [00:15:21.400]So new member fees, this is for the entire year.
- [00:15:25.070]So the average for our housed organizations is 2441,
- [00:15:29.160]and the average for our unhoused organizations is 265.
- [00:15:34.080]So you can see there's a big difference between
- [00:15:35.810]joining an unhoused organization and a housed organization.
- [00:15:38.820]And again, that fee is for the entire year.
- [00:15:41.440]Typically new member fees are higher than active member fees
- [00:15:44.800]because there's additional costs
- [00:15:46.020]when you first join an organization.
- [00:15:49.120]I'm gonna scroll over here then.
- [00:15:50.780]And so our live-in fees, the average cost is 6964.
- [00:15:54.680]Now the live-in fees cover a whole range of things.
- [00:15:57.420]It's your active dues.
- [00:15:58.420]It's also the food.
- [00:16:00.230]This is living in the facility, right?
- [00:16:02.350]And on our financial sheet we provide online,
- [00:16:04.550]it breaks down for each of our organizations
- [00:16:06.640]what all is a part of the live-in fees.
- [00:16:09.430]So if that's information you're looking for,
- [00:16:11.600]you can find that online.
- [00:16:13.800]Our unhoused member fees average is about $240,
- [00:16:17.614]and our live-out fees average about 1867.
- [00:16:24.410]I wanna make sure you and your student know
- [00:16:26.880]they should ask questions about finances
- [00:16:29.610]during primary recruitment.
- [00:16:30.730]The chapters are ready and able to answer those questions.
- [00:16:33.600]We don't want people to feel like
- [00:16:35.080]they can't ask questions about money.
- [00:16:36.460]We know that's really important
- [00:16:37.920]that people have answers to that.
- [00:16:41.254]Wanna make sure you're aware of our community scorecards.
- [00:16:43.880]So we've been sharing information
- [00:16:45.230]about each of our chapters since fall of 2018.
- [00:16:48.200]This is a great way to see our grade breakdown,
- [00:16:51.580]the demographic breakdown of each of our organizations,
- [00:16:53.920]you can see any conduct information
- [00:16:56.150]about any of our organizations
- [00:16:57.496]are available online.
- [00:16:58.960]We want to be as transparent as possible
- [00:17:00.656]with folks who are interested in joining our community.
- [00:17:10.200]I'm sorry about that,
- [00:17:11.665]it jumped a little too fast for common questions.
- [00:17:13.410]So I wanted to make sure we included
- [00:17:15.270]common questions that we get
- [00:17:17.270]for people who are attending our presentations.
- [00:17:19.180]So often people ask us about requirements for live-in.
- [00:17:22.280]So for the 13 organizations
- [00:17:24.070]that do have our facilities on campus,
- [00:17:26.200]most of the time members move in their sophomore year.
- [00:17:29.464]So a lot of our members stay living in on campus housing
- [00:17:32.890]or off campus if they've got permission
- [00:17:34.540]to do that for their first year,
- [00:17:36.150]and move in their sophomore year.
- [00:17:38.030]Some members still live in their junior year,
- [00:17:40.550]particularly if they're in leadership positions.
- [00:17:43.130]And then I would say a sprinkling of seniors
- [00:17:45.440]live in the chapter facilities.
- [00:17:47.620]Each of those requirements are different by organizations.
- [00:17:50.330]So again, if that's a concern or there's questions about it,
- [00:17:53.370]great opportunity for your student to ask those questions
- [00:17:55.640]during the recruitment process.
- [00:17:57.770]But there are live-in requirements
- [00:17:59.235]for each of our organizations that have facilities.
- [00:18:02.850]I will often get asked about
- [00:18:04.410]whether or not letters of recommendation are necessary.
- [00:18:06.700]So first, if you have no idea what I'm talking about
- [00:18:09.620]when I say letters of recommendation,
- [00:18:11.344]these are letters that alumni of an organization
- [00:18:15.560]can write on behalf of a student
- [00:18:17.240]going through the recruitment process.
- [00:18:19.210]I wanna make sure you hear it from me,
- [00:18:20.740]the director of fraternity and sorority life:
- [00:18:22.220]letter of recommendations are not necessary on our campus.
- [00:18:24.840]Every campus is a little different
- [00:18:26.950]about how they handle letters of recommendation,
- [00:18:29.064]but it is not necessary that a letter of recommendation
- [00:18:33.180]is needed to join one of our organizations.
- [00:18:35.864]I also wanna make sure I add that
- [00:18:37.928]a lot of organizations have updated their policies around
- [00:18:41.619]letters of recommendation and legacy policies
- [00:18:44.210]over the last two years.
- [00:18:45.690]We're expecting to see some updates to policies
- [00:18:47.930]even throughout this summer
- [00:18:49.150]as we're looking at fall recruitment.
- [00:18:50.900]So if you do have alumni who you know who are interested in
- [00:18:54.560]writing letters of recommendation for your student,
- [00:18:56.550]that's awesome.
- [00:18:57.670]Have them check with their national organization
- [00:18:59.610]to make sure there haven't been any updates
- [00:19:01.780]or changes that are needed,
- [00:19:03.270]but please don't feel like you have to go out of your way
- [00:19:06.210]to make sure your student has a letter of recommendation
- [00:19:08.740]from each chapter on our campus.
- [00:19:10.370]It is not necessary to be successful
- [00:19:12.645]in the recruitment process.
- [00:19:15.200]I've also received some questions about whether or not
- [00:19:17.570]a student should decide on their favorite chapters
- [00:19:19.820]before recruitment starts.
- [00:19:21.530]The exact question I got was,
- [00:19:23.343]"Should my daughter be rushing certain groups
- [00:19:25.480]before she gets here?"
- [00:19:27.690]The answer is no.
- [00:19:30.840]Primary recruitment is set up in a way that on purpose.
- [00:19:33.520]We want you to meet all 15 chapters
- [00:19:35.410]right from the beginning
- [00:19:36.480]to give every chapter an even playing field
- [00:19:39.259]that also allows every potential new member
- [00:19:41.660]to have an even playing field.
- [00:19:43.740]They start by going to all 15, and throughout that week
- [00:19:46.780]are gonna be narrowing down their choices.
- [00:19:48.830]So they go to all 15 on the first day,
- [00:19:52.088]up to 10 the second day, up to six the third day,
- [00:19:56.350]and up to two on preference round,
- [00:19:59.390]and finally with one bid at the end of the process.
- [00:20:01.700]So I said "up to" to make sure it's clear that
- [00:20:05.424]even on the day, you could go up to six,
- [00:20:08.170]you might have four that you're going back to that day.
- [00:20:10.820]That's completely normal.
- [00:20:12.170]We see a whole range of number of chapters
- [00:20:14.980]that our participants are going through throughout the week,
- [00:20:17.980]but there's no reason to come up with favorites
- [00:20:20.170]before recruitment starts
- [00:20:21.370]because your student's gonna have an opportunity
- [00:20:24.150]to meet all of them.
- [00:20:26.170]And then finally,
- [00:20:27.003]"How do I support my daughter through the process?"
- [00:20:29.368]Like I said earlier,
- [00:20:30.570]helping your daughter keep an open mind.
- [00:20:32.570]I think it can be really hard
- [00:20:34.080]watching your student go through the process.
- [00:20:35.910]And there are moments when disappointment can happen, right?
- [00:20:39.120]But keeping an open mind,
- [00:20:40.750]encouraging her to continue with the process,
- [00:20:42.930]to see it through.
- [00:20:44.260]Sometimes you have a conversation on Monday
- [00:20:47.130]with someone you were like, "That was just okay," right?
- [00:20:49.720]But then the next day you go back
- [00:20:51.120]and you meet someone entirely different in the chapter.
- [00:20:53.120]And you're like, "That was awesome.
- [00:20:54.220]We totally connected about all of these things."
- [00:20:56.720]I said earlier, these chapters have a lot of members.
- [00:20:59.350]And so I would hate for one not-so-connected conversation
- [00:21:03.867]leading to someone not being interested in an organization
- [00:21:07.090]when there's so many women
- [00:21:08.660]who are a part of each organization.
- [00:21:11.649]But those are the top questions that we get
- [00:21:14.090]around Panhellenic recruitment.
- [00:21:15.480]But of course we're happy to answer
- [00:21:16.850]any more that come our way.
- [00:21:18.890]I wanna thank you all for participating,
- [00:21:20.470]for listening to this session.
- [00:21:22.290]If you have questions
- [00:21:23.350]that you did not get from this presentation,
- [00:21:25.090]we are happy to have you email
- [00:21:26.440]our Panhellenic recruitment team.
- [00:21:28.070]That email address is down here
- [00:21:29.490]at panhellenicrecruitment.unl@ gmail.com.
- [00:21:33.030]That will get you to our
- [00:21:34.030]Panhellenic Association recruitment team.
- [00:21:36.610]And then our office number is also listed, 402-472-2582.
- [00:21:42.770]Anyone in our office is happy to answer
- [00:21:44.700]any questions that you might have
- [00:21:46.160]about the recruitment process,
- [00:21:47.690]about joining a Panhellenic sorority,
- [00:21:49.720]or about the Panhellenic Association in general.
- [00:21:52.672]Again, thanks so much for joining.
- [00:21:54.288]We are excited to meet your students
- [00:21:56.250]over the summer and this fall
- [00:21:57.760]and hopefully have many of them join our community.
- [00:22:00.487]Thanks so much and have a great day.
