- [00:00:10.869]Hi there, my name is Lori Romano and I'm
- [00:00:14.238]the Director of the Center for Academic
- [00:00:17.005]Success and Transition, or CAST office at
- [00:00:19.139]UNL. Everyone always talks about how
- [00:00:21.655]exciting it is to go to college. You get
- [00:00:25.221]to meet so many new people, learn so many
- [00:00:27.605]exciting things, and have a whole lot of
- [00:00:29.205]fun. And that's all true. But college is
- [00:00:30.821]hard. It's one of the biggest transitions
- [00:00:33.588]you'll go through in your life. And the
- [00:00:36.472]reality is, every student struggles with
- [00:00:38.607]the transition, whether you're a first-year
- [00:00:39.772]student, an international student, a
- [00:00:42.256]transfer student, or a first-generation
- [00:00:44.655]student. The Center for Academic Success
- [00:00:47.038]and Transition is here to help you be the
- [00:00:49.455]best student you can be. Here are just a
- [00:00:50.505]few of the common things we hear from
- [00:00:52.372]students who come into our office. We have
- [00:00:54.789]students who walk in and tell us that
- [00:00:57.522]they're just really overwhelmed with
- [00:01:00.039]everything and they just don't know where
- [00:01:01.838]to start. We have students come in and
- [00:01:03.572]say that they don't know how to take notes
- [00:01:04.889]in their lectures, or they're having
- [00:01:07.006]trouble keeping up with the reading that's
- [00:01:08.639]required for all of their classes. We have
- [00:01:10.272]students come in and they say they just
- [00:01:11.892]don't know what their professors want from
- [00:01:13.972]them. And sometimes students come in
- [00:01:16.789]and they just bombed their first round of
- [00:01:19.122]tests and they always did really well in
- [00:01:21.106]high school and they don't understand
- [00:01:23.105]why things are not quite going as smoothly
- [00:01:25.740]in college. Our team of Academic Success
- [00:01:28.789]Coaches can help with things like time
- [00:01:30.939]management, organization, reading and
- [00:01:32.856]note-taking, test prep, motivation and
- [00:01:35.139]procrastination, critical thinking. We
- [00:01:39.073]help students make connections and think
- [00:01:40.989]about their purpose for pursuing a college
- [00:01:42.973]degree. And we help students get connected
- [00:01:44.906]with other resources and networks on
- [00:01:46.873]campus. We can also help you understand
- [00:01:50.273]what's expected of you as a full-time
- [00:01:52.122]college student. Things like how much time
- [00:01:54.338]you should actually be spending working on
- [00:01:56.356]your classes, what "studying" actually
- [00:01:58.906]looks like, because it's a whole lot
- [00:02:00.989]different than what you did in high
- [00:02:02.756]school. UNL is a big place, and sometimes
- [00:02:05.389]it can be tough to figure out where to go
- [00:02:07.505]or who to talk to when you run into
- [00:02:09.122]issues. We want you to get really
- [00:02:11.172]comfortable coming into the CAST office.
- [00:02:12.839]If you have a question that we can't help
- [00:02:15.172]with or solve, we probably know who can
- [00:02:17.039]and we can help you get connected. Our
- [00:02:19.340]favorite part of our job is our Academic
- [00:02:22.189]Success Coaching. These are one-on-one,
- [00:02:24.056]in-person or Zoom appointments with our
- [00:02:27.440]team of Academic Success Coaches. This is
- [00:02:30.074]our chance to sit down, get to know you,
- [00:02:32.671]chat about any issues that you're facing
- [00:02:34.856]or questions you might have. And the best
- [00:02:37.089]part is, it's not a one-and-done thing.
- [00:02:39.390]You can schedule as many appointments as
- [00:02:41.072]you need. We have students who meet with
- [00:02:43.906]a Coach once a semester just to get
- [00:02:45.822]organized and then they're off and
- [00:02:47.622]running. Other students find it helpful to
- [00:02:49.356]set up monthly or weekly check-in
- [00:02:51.089]appointments just for some help keeping on
- [00:02:53.356]track in classes and staying motivated.
- [00:02:55.756]We also have free Academic Success
- [00:02:59.056]Workshops each week where students can
- [00:03:01.055]sit down and learn new skills in more of
- [00:03:03.723]a classroom setting. And we have free peer
- [00:03:05.742]tutoring in our Study Stops. You should
- [00:03:08.056]never have to pay for tutoring on a
- [00:03:11.472]college campus. We have special programs
- [00:03:13.706]and activities for international students,
- [00:03:15.890]transfer students, recipients of the
- [00:03:17.639]Emerging Leaders scholarship, recipients
- [00:03:20.023]of the Nebraska Promise scholarship, and
- [00:03:22.423]first-generation students. One quick note,
- [00:03:25.922]if you happen to be a first-generation
- [00:03:28.389]student, which is a student whose parents
- [00:03:30.539]or guardians did not earn a 4-year degree,
- [00:03:33.742]you may qualify to participate in our
- [00:03:37.372]First Husker Program. First Huskers are
- [00:03:38.556]invited to move to campus early,
- [00:03:40.322]participate in an intensive 4-day
- [00:03:42.056]foundational event with a team of Academic
- [00:03:43.790]Success Coaches and Peer Mentors, and
- [00:03:45.906]connect with other first-gen students,
- [00:03:47.789]faculty, and staff. And you'll have a
- [00:03:50.690]whole lot of fun, too. I guarantee it. You
- [00:03:53.089]can learn more about the First Husker
- [00:03:55.289]Program and apply by logging onto
- [00:03:57.740]https://success.unl.edu/first-husker.
- [00:04:02.306]There are only 200 spots available, so
- [00:04:04.556]be sure to sign up today. You're going to
- [00:04:06.722]be given so much information over the
- [00:04:08.506]next few weeks, and it's going to be
- [00:04:10.189]impossible to remember or make
- [00:04:11.906]sense of it all. But if you remember
- [00:04:14.040]nothing else, I want you to remember
- [00:04:14.940]this...Nobody does college alone. The most
- [00:04:18.139]successful students are those who reach
- [00:04:21.489]out, ask a lot of questions, and build a
- [00:04:24.740]really strong support network. That's
- [00:04:26.489]exactly what the CAST office is here for.
- [00:04:28.873]You belong here. You can succeed.
- [00:04:31.356]We can help.
- [00:04:32.789]We can't wait to see you on campus.
- [00:04:34.922]Go Big Red.
