- [00:00:04.650]Welcome everybody to the Active
- [00:00:06.450]and Adventurous Fitness, Sports and Recreation
- [00:00:09.450]sprint session here virtually online.
- [00:00:12.640]I'm extremely excited that you've decided to join us today.
- [00:00:16.150]This is an opportunity for you, as a parent,
- [00:00:18.140]to learn more about how your student
- [00:00:20.760]can become an active Husker.
- [00:00:23.110]My name is Scott Wagner.
- [00:00:24.170]I'm the Assistant Director
- [00:00:25.120]for Member Services at Campus Recreation.
- [00:00:27.523]I also handle all our outreach programs such as this,
- [00:00:31.400]and I'm glad that we could have the opportunity
- [00:00:33.260]to talk a little bit briefly
- [00:00:34.540]about what opportunities are out there
- [00:00:37.330]in the form of recreation for your students.
- [00:00:40.660]Campus Recreation is committed
- [00:00:42.070]to enhancing the number one reason a student is
- [00:00:44.260]attending UNL and that is obviously to achieve an education,
- [00:00:48.290]and we wanna propel them into a successful career
- [00:00:51.440]once they leave the UNL campus.
- [00:00:54.910]The next few years, the upcoming years,
- [00:00:57.040]are an excellent opportunity for them to explore
- [00:00:59.290]and deepen their passions for different hobbies
- [00:01:01.540]and personal interests as they learn who they are,
- [00:01:04.450]and kind of what makes them tick.
- [00:01:07.560]Fitness, sports, recreation, are other great options
- [00:01:11.020]for them to consider, and we hope that they will look
- [00:01:14.160]at some of the things we offer
- [00:01:15.810]through Campus Recreation that can fulfill
- [00:01:17.790]that need for them.
- [00:01:27.930]So my question to you, as you sit here listening
- [00:01:31.010]to me talk is, "What made you pick this session?
- [00:01:34.710]Why did you want to listen to what we have to offer
- [00:01:39.050]as far as Campus Recreation, and you know,
- [00:01:41.500]why is participation in Campus Recreation important?
- [00:01:45.050]And what do you hope that your student will gain
- [00:01:47.070]from their opportunities within the Campus Recreation
- [00:01:49.590]opportunities that we have?"
- [00:01:51.460]So take a second to ponder some of those things.
- [00:01:54.750]And we'll talk a little bit about,
- [00:01:56.250]as we've done sprint sessions over the years,
- [00:01:58.390]some of the comments that I get from parents such as you,
- [00:02:02.490]that are sitting in those seats.
- [00:02:09.900]So some of the whys that we tend to hear,
- [00:02:13.350]engagement, community, retention, stress relief, employment,
- [00:02:19.780]active lifestyle, leadership, and fun.
- [00:02:23.000]So these are things that parents, such as yourself,
- [00:02:27.210]look for in an opportunity for their students,
- [00:02:30.500]and what they're looking for as far
- [00:02:33.920]as extracurricular activities outside of the classroom,
- [00:02:37.930]when their students come to campus in the fall semester.
- [00:02:42.850]Some of the why that we do
- [00:02:45.820]as Campus Recreation professionals that mirror some
- [00:02:48.870]of these situations are very similar.
- [00:02:51.860]We want your students to engage.
- [00:02:53.460]We want them to be engaged when they first walk
- [00:02:56.010]on the campus.
- [00:02:57.380]We know that a number of students,
- [00:03:01.000]that our data shows us, that students themselves
- [00:03:03.760]within the first two weeks, if they're engaged,
- [00:03:06.180]they're more than likely going to stay on campus
- [00:03:08.500]and wanna be, you know finish out that degree
- [00:03:11.960]over that course of that three to four years or five years,
- [00:03:14.850]whatever it may be.
- [00:03:16.610]84% of students on the UNL campus currently utilize
- [00:03:21.090]Campus Recreation facilities, programs, and services.
- [00:03:24.670]So we have a very engaged user base,
- [00:03:27.860]and we are of a very vibrant campus when it comes
- [00:03:30.260]to our recreation opportunities.
- [00:03:33.780]Another important piece is community.
- [00:03:35.810]I like to say, "A belonging,
- [00:03:37.390]a sense of belonging in community."
- [00:03:40.200]A side note, I am actually a product of this.
- [00:03:44.410]And one of the reasons that I really preach the
- [00:03:46.890]outreach piece for Campus Recreation,
- [00:03:48.860]and why I believe it's important is
- [00:03:50.960]because when I was a student, I didn't have my community.
- [00:03:53.700]I didn't find that place of belonging,
- [00:03:55.580]and I simply didn't like the college atmosphere.
- [00:04:00.400]I stepped away for a few years,
- [00:04:02.010]and I came back to a different college.
- [00:04:04.480]I got plugged in and engaged, and I found that community
- [00:04:07.300]within the Campus Rec field in intramurals.
- [00:04:09.970]And a long story short, I have two degrees,
- [00:04:13.210]and one is one of those is in Sports Rec Management.
- [00:04:17.030]And I've been a professional for almost 19 years now,
- [00:04:20.850]because of Campus Recreation and finding that community.
- [00:04:24.150]And I wanna push that mantra onto our students
- [00:04:27.290]that either go to school here, or work for us,
- [00:04:31.150]that there are opportunities to get engaged.
- [00:04:33.220]But I also see the importance of finding your sense
- [00:04:36.910]of belonging, and finding your crew to hang out with,
- [00:04:40.190]your social groups, as someone to kind of lean on
- [00:04:43.980]when times are tough.
- [00:04:45.240]And that kept me in school,
- [00:04:46.940]and I want to do that as well for our students.
- [00:04:49.800]We talk about retention, the same thing, opportunities.
- [00:04:53.930]If you're enjoying what you're doing,
- [00:04:55.820]your grades are gonna be better,
- [00:04:57.620]and you're gonna retain things,
- [00:04:59.120]and you're gonna wanna stay on campus
- [00:05:00.530]and finish out that degree, which is our ultimate goal.
- [00:05:03.600]Stress relief, pretty obvious.
- [00:05:06.040]Exercise, opportunities to participate in sports,
- [00:05:10.020]those are opportunities for you to be outside the classroom,
- [00:05:12.730]get away from the homework, and relieve that stress.
- [00:05:15.910]Employment, we'll talk a little bit more about this later,
- [00:05:18.470]but Campus Recreation does offer about 650 plus jobs
- [00:05:22.760]to students here on campus.
- [00:05:25.190]We are one of the largest employers
- [00:05:27.240]of on campus jobs are considered.
- [00:05:31.250]We are open 5:45 in the morning 'til midnight,
- [00:05:34.300]so there's lots of opportunities
- [00:05:35.620]to work around class schedules, and we do a lot
- [00:05:39.130]of development opportunities for them as well
- [00:05:41.489]that you gain a lot of knowledge and skills
- [00:05:44.260]that you can take on with you,
- [00:05:45.550]no matter what degree field you're looking for.
- [00:05:48.600]We talk about active lifestyle.
- [00:05:50.180]Again, much like the stress relief.
- [00:05:52.488]Leadership, not only in some of our sport clubs,
- [00:05:56.000]but also working for us.
- [00:05:58.000]And then overall, recreation is just a fun opportunity
- [00:06:01.580]to be out and about and recreate.
- [00:06:04.200]And whether you work here and have fun,
- [00:06:07.430]whether you participate in our activities and have fun,
- [00:06:10.760]it can be as fun as you want it to be,
- [00:06:13.000]but that is also another opportunity for us
- [00:06:15.710]to kind of explain to you what is our why.
- [00:06:22.200]So as a fee paying student, which all your students will be
- [00:06:26.600]once the fall semester starts, students have access
- [00:06:30.580]to three different recreation centers with those fees.
- [00:06:34.490]The upper left on your screen is the Rec and Wellness Center
- [00:06:38.170]at East Campus.
- [00:06:39.620]This facility is fairly new.
- [00:06:42.710]We remodeled it in 2015, reopened in 2016,
- [00:06:47.110]so it's a very new, state of the art facility.
- [00:06:51.560]The one on the upper right is our
- [00:06:53.210]flagship recreation facility.
- [00:06:55.760]It's here on City Campus.
- [00:06:57.510]It's the Campus Recreation Center.
- [00:06:59.880]And then the one on the bottom
- [00:07:00.960]is our Outdoor Adventures Center,
- [00:07:02.290]and that is located also on City Campus.
- [00:07:07.450]Overall, your students are gonna have
- [00:07:09.170]about 400,000 square feet of indoor space,
- [00:07:12.120]and a little over 170 acres of outdoor play area
- [00:07:15.840]at their disposal with their Campus Rec membership.
- [00:07:19.920]As I stated, since Campus Recreation is included
- [00:07:22.550]in the University Program and Facility Fee,
- [00:07:25.340]all your students need to do when they come
- [00:07:26.890]to campus is to use any of these three centers,
- [00:07:30.580]is use their NCard.
- [00:07:32.170]The NCard will serve basically as their membership,
- [00:07:35.480]and that's how they get into those facilities
- [00:07:37.940]and participate either informally,
- [00:07:40.540]or if they wanna participate in any of our programs
- [00:07:42.790]and services held within.
- [00:07:45.830]The Campus Rec Center and the Rec and Wellness Center
- [00:07:47.960]on East Campus have very similar amenities.
- [00:07:51.310]There's a strength training area, cardio equipment area,
- [00:07:54.310]multipurpose courts, locker rooms with dry sauna,
- [00:07:57.690]and other spaces for other, as part of the facility.
- [00:08:02.100]The Rec Campus Recreation Center has our lap pool.
- [00:08:05.640]It also has our turf field, known as Cook Pavilion,
- [00:08:10.790]and the Rec and Wellness Center also
- [00:08:12.880]on East Campus has our wellness kitchen, golf simulator,
- [00:08:16.860]multi-activity courts complete with dasher boards.
- [00:08:25.610]Finding community is probably the biggest piece
- [00:08:28.550]that we will talk about within this,
- [00:08:30.510]and guiding students as where they want to be
- [00:08:32.610]and where they want to belong.
- [00:08:34.620]Two areas that do a really good job of this is
- [00:08:37.980]in our sport programs,
- [00:08:39.090]include intramural sports and sport clubs.
- [00:08:42.940]So, which are sport in nature
- [00:08:45.850]but also have national governing bodies.
- [00:08:47.900]They're a little bit different in that regard.
- [00:08:50.860]Sport clubs are they compete intercollegiate
- [00:08:54.250]in the local, regional, and sometimes national competitions.
- [00:08:58.180]They practice one to two, three times a week.
- [00:09:01.840]It's a little bit more invested.
- [00:09:05.130]If you're looking for more close-knit,
- [00:09:07.920]student initiated opportunities for leadership,
- [00:09:10.570]this is probably the area for your students to look at too.
- [00:09:15.110]Right now, we have over 30 different recognized sport clubs
- [00:09:19.270]on campus.
- [00:09:20.820]If there's something that we do not have,
- [00:09:23.020]we can always get you started on that trail as well.
- [00:09:27.310]Intramural sports have team sports,
- [00:09:29.640]as well as individual sports,
- [00:09:31.470]as well as many dual activities.
- [00:09:34.450]Many of these are formed by students,
- [00:09:37.100]maybe if they live on the same resident hall,
- [00:09:39.270]sorority, fraternity, or high school friends.
- [00:09:43.320]We also have a free agent program
- [00:09:45.190]that help offer assist those students,
- [00:09:47.280]and help them find a team to play with.
- [00:09:50.310]And if you have questions about any of this,
- [00:09:52.890]go to the NvolveU,
- [00:09:54.740]which is for all our registered student organizations,
- [00:09:57.380]and you can find out information.
- [00:09:59.270]If you're looking for how do I get signed up,
- [00:10:01.390]or how do I find out when tryouts are,
- [00:10:03.350]there will be opportunities for emails
- [00:10:05.180]and contact information on NvolveU.
- [00:10:09.690]IMLeagues, also here listed on the bottom,
- [00:10:11.980]is where we house all our intramural events.
- [00:10:14.870]You can look on IMLeagues.
- [00:10:16.320]You can also look on the UNLcampusrec.unl.edu website.
- [00:10:21.040]We'll have a list of all our activities
- [00:10:23.690]that your students can sign up for.
- [00:10:30.110]Finding a balance between physical
- [00:10:31.860]and mental health is paramount in every student's journey.
- [00:10:35.340]A focus on their academics is important,
- [00:10:37.350]but it's also important for them
- [00:10:39.950]to pursue leisure activities.
- [00:10:42.920]We want your students to be the very best versions
- [00:10:45.150]of themselves and Campus Recreation does offer a variety
- [00:10:48.080]of fitness programs as well as wellness services
- [00:10:50.700]for your students.
- [00:10:52.420]Students may find themselves interested
- [00:10:54.230]in attending a group fitness class,
- [00:10:56.370]working with a personal trainer,
- [00:10:58.530]or using one of our outdoor functional fitness areas,
- [00:11:03.020]or any other workout of their choice.
- [00:11:05.850]There are opportunities for your students
- [00:11:07.440]to attend different demonstrations
- [00:11:09.450]in our demonstration kitchen,
- [00:11:10.760]to participate in cooking classes, playing games,
- [00:11:14.260]exercising, or just having fun,
- [00:11:16.610]to alleviate the stress and improve their sleeping patterns.
- [00:11:21.700]If that is not enough,
- [00:11:22.660]Campus Recreation also offers massage therapy services.
- [00:11:26.560]This is a great way to treat your Husker as a client.
- [00:11:29.730]All clients receive 25% off their services
- [00:11:33.400]of their birthday month.
- [00:11:42.610]Escape, and educate, and enjoy some
- [00:11:45.360]of their Outdoor Adventures Center programs.
- [00:11:47.840]Different things, such as adventure trips, gear rental shop,
- [00:11:51.740]the challenge course at our Leadership Training Center,
- [00:11:54.210]the climbing wall and bike shop
- [00:11:55.760]in our Outdoor Adventures Center, all contribute
- [00:11:57.990]to those three E's that are on the screen there below.
- [00:12:07.330]Every student must make their own ownership
- [00:12:11.012]and their educational journey,
- [00:12:12.010]and create their individual story.
- [00:12:14.410]A former participant shared,
- [00:12:16.327]"I love meeting new people at the Outdoor Adventures Center
- [00:12:18.820]and going on trips with them,
- [00:12:20.620]and taking academic classes with them.
- [00:12:23.300]It's an exciting environment, and I love the opportunities."
- [00:12:27.210]As we just mentioned, talking about taking academic classes,
- [00:12:31.560]as part of the College of Education and Human Sciences,
- [00:12:35.790]Campus Recreation does offer many academic classes
- [00:12:39.440]for one or two credits.
- [00:12:41.520]These are usually semester long courses.
- [00:12:44.280]And like I said, they vary from one to two credits depending
- [00:12:47.460]on how complex each of the classes are.
- [00:12:52.110]I like to call these classes, "Life skill classes",
- [00:12:55.700]'cause you're learning things that you can take
- [00:12:58.420]with you and do at any point in time,
- [00:13:00.767]after you leave Campus Recreation or even the University.
- [00:13:05.700]So you can see by just some of the classes we have on there.
- [00:13:09.010]Those are things that you can do
- [00:13:10.070]outside the university setting and stuff like that.
- [00:13:14.650]Many of the classes lead to a certification or employment
- [00:13:20.180]with our department, whether it's personal training,
- [00:13:22.600]or first aid, CPR.
- [00:13:24.817]Or you can get certified just in CPR,
- [00:13:27.350]or you can actually work for us
- [00:13:28.970]in one of our injury prevention and care staff member units.
- [00:13:36.540]Your students will find these options on their MyRED portal.
- [00:13:39.970]So if that's something that interests them,
- [00:13:41.540]and they're looking for one of these classes,
- [00:13:43.430]it's a great opportunity for them to expand their horizons
- [00:13:46.330]outside of just their regular academic classes.
- [00:13:52.550]As we talked about earlier,
- [00:13:53.620]employment with Campus Recreation is very big,
- [00:13:56.300]and it's an excellent chance
- [00:13:57.440]for your students to develop as leaders,
- [00:13:59.200]both professionally and within the UNL community.
- [00:14:02.560]Student employees manage higher facilities, teach classes,
- [00:14:06.560]respond to and aid in emergency situations, organize travel.
- [00:14:12.030]They handle all kinds of different situations.
- [00:14:14.230]They serve as officers on sport clubs,
- [00:14:16.330]officials in our intramural program.
- [00:14:19.270]They're also customer service ambassadors here
- [00:14:22.150]at our front desk.
- [00:14:24.120]Campus Recreation uses Handshake,
- [00:14:26.110]provided by the UNL Career Services,
- [00:14:29.580]to post all its listings.
- [00:14:31.420]So when your student is ready to come in
- [00:14:33.610]and look for that position,
- [00:14:36.250]push them towards the Handshake website on the campus,
- [00:14:41.950]the Career Services post,
- [00:14:44.070]and that will tell them where they need to go,
- [00:14:46.130]and what options are out there for them, and how to apply.
- [00:14:50.010]Campus Recreation also participates
- [00:14:51.720]in something called Husker GROW,
- [00:14:53.460]and this is just simply guided reflection on work.
- [00:14:57.000]Husker GROW takes what they learn in the field
- [00:15:00.090]to the next level,
- [00:15:01.200]through connective conversations with our student employees.
- [00:15:03.790]And we highly engage our student employees
- [00:15:06.320]to think outside the box and what they're learning,
- [00:15:08.680]that they can put on their resume,
- [00:15:09.930]and take with them after they leave UNL.
- [00:15:13.390]These brief, structured conversations between students
- [00:15:16.070]and their supervisors and/or their coach,
- [00:15:18.950]try to connect on-the-job experiences
- [00:15:21.810]and leadership experiences, with the coursework
- [00:15:24.550]that they're already doing, and how that gets them
- [00:15:26.410]to where their career ambitions are leading them.
- [00:15:34.210]Campus Recreation participates
- [00:15:35.720]in a benchmarking survey every three years.
- [00:15:37.950]And as part of that, as I mentioned earlier,
- [00:15:41.060]we have 84% of our respondents participated
- [00:15:44.520]in Campus Recreation programs and facilities.
- [00:15:47.360]And we, like I said, we are very vibrant in our attempt
- [00:15:50.960]to make sure that everybody is engaged,
- [00:15:52.820]and has that sense of belonging.
- [00:15:56.200]In addition to some of the other data collected from that,
- [00:16:01.490]74% of students surveyed felt like the Campus Rec improved
- [00:16:04.910]their ability to get a good night's sleep.
- [00:16:07.550]65% of students felt that Campus Rec
- [00:16:10.210]increased their sense of belonging.
- [00:16:12.410]So you can see that not only are we helping them
- [00:16:15.060]with the mental piece of it,
- [00:16:16.960]also the wellness side of things, and as well,
- [00:16:19.300]obviously the physical piece.
- [00:16:22.420]Campus Recreation is committed
- [00:16:23.780]to enriching the educational experience
- [00:16:26.030]by promoting lifelong healthy living.
- [00:16:28.410]And we're dedicated to providing active
- [00:16:30.250]and innovative recreational opportunities.
- [00:16:32.690]We wanna celebrate the differences of our students.
- [00:16:36.020]We wanna cultivate a supportive relationship
- [00:16:38.440]with those individuals,
- [00:16:39.460]and we want them to find that community.
- [00:16:41.590]But most importantly,
- [00:16:42.430]we wanna develop community and global leaders.

- [00:17:07.890]As I said, we want your students to find that community,
