- [00:00:05.020]Hi, my name is Lori Bennett Baumli.
- [00:00:07.597]I'm the Assistant Director in Parking & Transit Services
- [00:00:10.240]here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:12.810]Thanks for joining me today.
- [00:00:15.590]I'm gonna go over a few things with you
- [00:00:18.340]to help your student understand parking at UNL
- [00:00:21.460]and transportation at UNL and a little bit
- [00:00:24.450]about Parking & Transit Services as a department.
- [00:00:28.130]We're what is known as an auxiliary department,
- [00:00:30.440]which means we do not receive federal,
- [00:00:32.700]state, or tuition dollars.
- [00:00:35.100]Our funding comes from the sale of permits,
- [00:00:38.150]special event parking,
- [00:00:40.800]hourly or transitory parking, and citations.
- [00:00:45.180]We use these funds to operate all of our parking facilities,
- [00:00:50.140]as well as our staff.
- [00:00:53.440]Our parking facilities include lots and garages.
- [00:00:57.310]We have cameras that we operate in all the lots and garages.
- [00:01:00.920]We provide lighting.
- [00:01:04.190]We use the funds for snow removal, resurfacing of lots,
- [00:01:09.200]garage maintenance, and cleaning.
- [00:01:19.350]Today, I'm gonna talk about your student
- [00:01:22.280]and the parking permits that they have available to them.
- [00:01:28.450]We have residential students or commuter students,
- [00:01:33.000]and a permit is required to park in our lots and garages.
- [00:01:37.950]We have academic year permits, and we have annual permits,
- [00:01:42.620]as well, for commuter students.
- [00:01:47.030]We also offer hourly parking for students
- [00:01:49.710]that maybe aren't on campus very often
- [00:01:54.880]and have better economic choices with that.
- [00:01:59.100]So that's something to be aware of as well.
- [00:02:05.250]Permit holders must be in their assigned areas
- [00:02:08.160]during the core hours of campus
- [00:02:09.590]from 7:30 in the morning to 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon.
- [00:02:13.120]So that means they'll park in their assigned lot or garage
- [00:02:15.840]and then walk to their destination.
- [00:02:18.870]UNL's lots are more on the perimeter of campus,
- [00:02:22.210]simply because we don't have the room
- [00:02:25.500]within the campus
- [00:02:28.230]to put the parking facilities and garages.
- [00:02:31.500]So we are considered a pedestrian campus.
- [00:02:35.430]I'm going to share my screen with you
- [00:02:37.930]so you can review our website with me
- [00:02:42.350]and go through a PowerPoint
- [00:02:43.770]that will hopefully help you understand
- [00:02:46.050]how to order a permit and what's the best for your student.
- [00:02:53.760]Our website is at parking.unl.edu.
- [00:03:00.680]Our phone number is area code (402) 472-1800.
- [00:03:07.490]On the introductory page, or our homepage,
- [00:03:10.010]you'll see a navigation bar right across the top.
- [00:03:15.140]That navigation bar has dropdown menus that will lead you
- [00:03:18.720]to pages to help you learn about the parking permits,
- [00:03:22.240]learn about the rules and regulations, the bus routes,
- [00:03:26.450]short-term options, and our maps.
- [00:03:32.030]They're all quite useful information
- [00:03:34.240]to become familiar with.
- [00:03:39.570]Here's an example of what you'll see
- [00:03:41.450]on those dropdown menus.
- [00:03:43.550]You'll see the Student Permit Purchase Guide,
- [00:03:46.430]Rules & Regulations, Campus Bus Service, Short Term Options.
- [00:03:50.810]There's the Maps, and then general information
- [00:03:55.710]About Us as a department.
- [00:04:00.900]When your student goes to purchase their permit,
- [00:04:03.650]they'll start at the Student Permit Purchase Guide.
- [00:04:08.470]Something new about UNL Parking & Transit Services
- [00:04:11.410]this year is that we are transitioning
- [00:04:14.290]to license plate recognition, which means the license plate
- [00:04:17.780]actually serves as the permit for your student.
- [00:04:21.640]They can assign up to five vehicles to their permit.
- [00:04:25.830]Each vehicle license plate must be entered
- [00:04:29.160]to be associated with a specific permit or a permit type.
- [00:04:35.550]The license plate should be entered
- [00:04:37.060]without spaces or dashes,
- [00:04:39.460]so the equipment can read it appropriately.
- [00:04:46.960]The Purchase Guide will concentrate
- [00:04:48.690]on whether you're a resident student or a commuter student,
- [00:04:52.870]and whether you're a City Campus student
- [00:04:54.990]or East Campus student.
- [00:05:02.730]Our permits for surface lot for residential students
- [00:05:07.510]on City Campus are R01 and R02.
- [00:05:11.630]Those are 405 for the academic year.
- [00:05:15.210]We also have garage permits for residential students.
- [00:05:18.260]Academic year prices are 459 for the 14th & Avery Garage,
- [00:05:23.030]or 486 for the 17th & R, 18th & R,
- [00:05:27.210]and 19th & Vine Garages.
- [00:05:31.550]For residential students on East Campus,
- [00:05:34.800]we have only surface lot available.
- [00:05:37.530]That's in area E.
- [00:05:39.550]And again, that is the 405 for the academic year.
- [00:05:44.750]The Student Permit Purchase Guide
- [00:05:46.090]will kind of show you your different options
- [00:05:48.810]and the pricings associated with those.
- [00:05:52.040]Our permits do pro rate daily,
- [00:05:54.570]which means they get less expensive as time goes on.
- [00:05:58.300]So if your student doesn't bring a vehicle
- [00:06:00.150]to campus right away when they come to UNL,
- [00:06:04.020]let's say they go home at Thanksgiving and bring a car back
- [00:06:06.930]so they can get around Lincoln
- [00:06:09.940]or, you know, use it for getting home, et cetera,
- [00:06:12.160]they can purchase a permit anytime during the academic year.
- [00:06:16.320]It's just less expensive as the time goes on.
- [00:06:20.090]If your student brings a vehicle to campus
- [00:06:23.350]at the beginning of the year
- [00:06:24.910]and then discovers they don't use it very much,
- [00:06:28.160]they can return that parking permit.
- [00:06:30.040]However, I do want to bring your attention
- [00:06:31.770]to the refund policy.
- [00:06:34.230]You'll find that on our website,
- [00:06:35.850]and I believe it could be
- [00:06:39.630]under the Student Permit Purchase Guide,
- [00:06:42.370]or you can do a search on our website
- [00:06:45.880]for refund policy,
- [00:06:48.170]and you'll be able to find that policy that way.
- [00:06:51.410]It is a graduated refund policy,
- [00:06:56.710]structured like housing's refund policy.
- [00:07:01.000]So just be aware of that.
- [00:07:05.490]Garage permit holders must return their parking permit to us
- [00:07:09.380]for anytime they want a refund.
- [00:07:11.660]Surface residential students must return an event sticker
- [00:07:17.580]that they'll receive, as well.
- [00:07:25.460]Our permits are structured
- [00:07:28.320]based on where a student is living,
- [00:07:32.870]or where their main areas of campus are.
- [00:07:37.990]Residential students that live in the north part of campus
- [00:07:42.220]at Harper-Schramm-Smith or The Village
- [00:07:46.540]have the surface lot R01 or 14th & Avery Garage
- [00:07:50.620]to choose from.
- [00:07:53.450]The surface lot is
- [00:07:57.590]or will receive an event sticker that allows them
- [00:08:01.110]to park in those surface lots during game days.
- [00:08:06.660]The southeast quadrant of campus for Eastside Suites,
- [00:08:10.130]University Suites, the Knoll and then Greek housing
- [00:08:13.730]have the R02 or 17th & R
- [00:08:18.330]and 18th & R Garages to choose from.
- [00:08:22.750]If your student lives in Abel-Sandoz
- [00:08:26.110]or along Vine Street Greek houses,
- [00:08:29.580]they have the 19th & R Garage to choose from,
- [00:08:33.200]or that surface lot R02.
- [00:08:37.580]R02 is about two blocks away from Harper,
- [00:08:40.300]or from Abel-Sandoz, so it's really not that far.
- [00:08:44.980]Commuter students have their choice
- [00:08:46.410]of non reserved surface lot, the area C,
- [00:08:51.560]or the reserved surface lot D1 and D2.
- [00:08:58.080]The area C non reserved surface lots
- [00:09:01.210]for the academic year are $405.
- [00:09:03.770]For the full year, it's 540.
- [00:09:07.270]The reserved lots D1 and D2 are 729
- [00:09:12.460]for the academic year and 972 for the full year.
- [00:09:16.890]Those reserved lots are sold on a one-for-one basis,
- [00:09:20.300]so your student is guaranteed to have a stall.
- [00:09:23.900]We also have our perimeter lot for commuter students.
- [00:09:28.330]That perimeter lot is the most economical.
- [00:09:32.050]It is 207 for the academic year or 276 for the full year.
- [00:09:38.440]Residential students can also choose
- [00:09:40.440]to park in a perimeter lot.
- [00:09:43.840]We do have the perimeter lot at Devaney
- [00:09:48.310]that does allow overnight parking.
- [00:09:50.890]The perimeter lot at 1001 Y Street
- [00:09:53.700]does not allow for overnight parking
- [00:09:55.710]and is considered a commuter perimeter lot.
- [00:10:03.410]On East Campus, as I mentioned, we only have surface lots.
- [00:10:08.250]The residential students choose the area E,
- [00:10:11.800]and that lot is just directly east
- [00:10:13.860]of the Massengale Residential Center.
- [00:10:17.270]Commuter permits have the area non reserved surface lots,
- [00:10:22.570]or again that perimeter lot is an option, as well.
- [00:10:30.720]Again, have your student look at our website.
- [00:10:32.940]Have them read the Rules & Regulations
- [00:10:34.880]just to avoid those citations.
- [00:10:37.710]We don't want to give citations.
- [00:10:40.130]We try to work with students
- [00:10:41.360]and educate them on where they can park.
- [00:10:43.480]So if they have questions they should always
- [00:10:45.350]just give us a call or shoot us an email,
- [00:10:47.560]and we'll be happy to have and help them.
- [00:10:52.240]Parking & Transit Services contracts with the City
- [00:10:54.780]of Lincoln to provide bus service for the UNL campus.
- [00:10:59.110]That bus service is paid for through student fees
- [00:11:02.730]and then funding from Parking & Transit Services
- [00:11:05.260]from the sale of permits.
- [00:11:08.790]We have two main routes, the 24 and the 25.
- [00:11:12.370]They run from City Campus to East Campus,
- [00:11:15.950]and they run opposite of each other.
- [00:11:17.860]So you can catch a route that's gonna drop you off
- [00:11:22.910]closest to your destination.
- [00:11:24.740]They run about 15 minutes apart between buses.
- [00:11:29.130]We have, I think, two on each route
- [00:11:31.200]that are operating during the day.
- [00:11:33.590]They go from 7:00 in the morning to 9:00 p.m. at night.
- [00:11:38.750]After 9 p.m., we have an on-call van service
- [00:11:41.980]that Parking & Transit Services staffs.
- [00:11:45.140]That phone number is on our website.
- [00:11:47.440]So if your student is studying late, for example,
- [00:11:50.010]in Love Library, needs to get
- [00:11:51.470]to Massengale Residential Center on East Campus,
- [00:11:54.790]they can give us a call.
- [00:11:56.100]We'll pick them up at the nearest bus station to them
- [00:11:59.200]or bus stop, rather, and then drop them off
- [00:12:02.650]at the East Campus bus stop.
- [00:12:07.340]We also have our route
- [00:12:08.460]from City Campus to Innovation Campus.
- [00:12:11.830]That is the 22. It runs the same time.
- [00:12:15.460]We have the 23, which is actually not a StarTran route
- [00:12:19.260]but a bus or a van service
- [00:12:21.810]that UNL Parking & Transportation Services operates.
- [00:12:27.000]The demand on that route is not as great
- [00:12:29.730]as, for example, the 24 and 5, 24 and 25,
- [00:12:33.570]where students are going between East and City Campus,
- [00:12:36.950]so we just have a 12-passenger van that we operate for that.
- [00:12:46.630]Football in Nebraska is quite an event.
- [00:12:50.330]Athletics does pay Parking & Transit Services
- [00:12:54.040]for lots for football home game day parking.
- [00:12:58.900]Residential students can still park in their assigned lot
- [00:13:02.550]or garage on football game dates.
- [00:13:05.720]The garage permits, again, they'll have a hang tag
- [00:13:09.300]with an RFID reader in them that operates those gates.
- [00:13:13.100]That allows them to park in their areas
- [00:13:17.030]or in their garages on football game days.
- [00:13:19.630]Residential students that have a surface lot R01 or R02
- [00:13:24.630]will receive an event sticker that they'll place
- [00:13:27.290]on the inside of the windshield on the driver's side
- [00:13:31.100]to indicate to parking lot attendants on game days
- [00:13:33.970]that they're allowed to park in that surface lot.
- [00:13:38.610]If your commuter student needs to come to campus
- [00:13:41.070]on a game day, we do have some lots that are available
- [00:13:44.570]for students, faculty, and staff to use.
- [00:13:49.820]The nearest one is north of Nebraska Hall.
- [00:13:54.540]We also have one over at Business Services
- [00:13:56.820]and then at Devaney Sports Center.
- [00:13:59.810]If your commuter student needs to come
- [00:14:02.550]to campus on football game day,
- [00:14:04.270]they need to contact UNL Parking & Transit Services
- [00:14:08.310]from a UNL email account and request an event sticker
- [00:14:12.710]that we will mail to them,
- [00:14:14.470]or they can come in and pick that up.
- [00:14:19.390]Again, residential students can park
- [00:14:21.390]in their assigned areas on football game days.
- [00:14:27.120]I think that's all the information
- [00:14:28.380]that I have for you today.
- [00:14:29.550]I do thank you for watching this and becoming familiar
- [00:14:33.170]with our Parking & Transit Services Department.
- [00:14:37.260]Our office is located at 625 Stadium Drive on the south side
- [00:14:42.190]of the garage between the entrance and exit lanes.
- [00:14:45.130]Our garage is right west of the stadium,
- [00:14:47.430]basically at 10th & T Streets.
- [00:14:49.850]Again, our phone number
- [00:14:50.770]is area code (402) 472-1800.
- [00:14:55.970]Our email address is unlpts@unl.edu.
- [00:15:00.950]I appreciate your time.
- [00:15:03.640]I hope your day goes well,
- [00:15:07.870]and I hope the upcoming year goes well for your student.
- [00:15:11.100]Thank you.
