- [00:00:02.928]Hi everyone. My name is Aimee Grindstaff,
- [00:00:05.188]and I work in the marketing office here at
- [00:00:07.908]the University Health Center. Thank you
- [00:00:10.288]so much for watching this recording. Over
- [00:00:12.658]the next 20 minutes or so, I'm going to
- [00:00:14.538]give you a quick rundown of all the things
- [00:00:16.838]you need to know as a parent of a student
- [00:00:19.305]coming to the university. In terms of how
- [00:00:21.615]they would use the University Health
- [00:00:23.405]Center. We'll talk about the different
- [00:00:26.165]services we offer, how your student can
- [00:00:28.375]access those services, how they pay for
- [00:00:30.735]those services, and then we'll wrap up
- [00:00:33.073]with a couple of tips that you can use as
- [00:00:35.043]a parent to help your students stay
- [00:00:38.083]physically well while they're a Husker
- [00:00:40.403]here on campus. Let's start with our
- [00:00:45.233]hours and location. The University Health
- [00:00:47.653]Center is actually located on the eastern
- [00:00:50.773]edge of City Campus, which you can see
- [00:00:53.468]here in the map on the right, so right
- [00:00:56.628]along Antelope Valley Parkway. If you
- [00:00:59.158]have a student that's staying in any of
- [00:01:01.558]the suites, we're actually right across
- [00:01:03.477]the street from those buildings, and we're
- [00:01:05.647]also right across the street from the
- [00:01:07.657]parking lot that you may have parked at if
- [00:01:09.777]you came to New Student Orientation over
- [00:01:12.118]the summer. We're the big black and white
- [00:01:14.228]building pictured here below. We kind of
- [00:01:16.578]stick out like a sore thumb in terms of
- [00:01:18.951]the fact that we don't look like anything
- [00:01:21.053]else on campus, so we're very easy to see
- [00:01:23.903]and identify. Even though we're on City
- [00:01:27.236]Campus, if you do have a student that's
- [00:01:29.706]living on East Campus, it's still very
- [00:01:31.742]easy to get to us. The bus system stops
- [00:01:34.902]right in front of our building. If your
- [00:01:36.992]student has a car, maybe they're
- [00:01:38.632]living off campus, they can actually bring
- [00:01:41.032]their car to campus and park in our
- [00:01:42.811]parking lot to the north of our building.
- [00:01:44.907]We have a bike rack. I know it's popular
- [00:01:48.229]for students right now to rent scooters
- [00:01:50.663]and bicycles, so pretty much any form of
- [00:01:53.223]transportation is going to get you to the
- [00:01:55.633]Health Center. And of course, probably
- [00:01:57.833]the most known one is walking. So if your
- [00:02:00.663]student is living on campus, it's a pretty
- [00:02:04.663]quick walk from anywhere on City Campus.
- [00:02:07.116]Our academic hours, so fall and spring
- [00:02:10.416]semesters, are Monday through Friday from
- [00:02:12.356]8 to 5. On Saturday, we're open for kind
- [00:02:16.826]of a same day, urgent-style clinic from 9 to
- [00:02:19.806]12:30. And then we're closed on Sundays.
- [00:02:22.163]During the summer, we have adjusted hours,
- [00:02:25.016]so either way, we encourage all students
- [00:02:27.747]to check our website for our most current
- [00:02:29.930]hours for that semester.
- [00:02:31.929]One of the first questions we get asked is
- [00:02:35.929]"How does the health center help my
- [00:02:38.189]student when they're sick or injured?".
- [00:02:40.269]We know that illnesses and injuries
- [00:02:42.509]happen, right? Especially as a college
- [00:02:44.941]student when you're living on campus in
- [00:02:47.667]close quarters with other students.
- [00:02:49.534]It's bound to happen that they're going
- [00:02:52.517]to get a cold or the flu or strep or
- [00:02:54.867]something at least once while they're a
- [00:02:56.947]Husker. So when that does happen, we are
- [00:02:59.382]the main resource for your student. One
- [00:03:02.472]of the first services to know about is
- [00:03:04.172]that we offer primary care office visits
- [00:03:07.222]where your student can come meet with
- [00:03:09.064]a doctor or an advanced practice provider
- [00:03:11.815]to get an exam and see what's going on
- [00:03:13.755]with their symptoms. Now, in some cases,
- [00:03:17.390]lab testing might be needed to confirm a
- [00:03:19.610]diagnosis, maybe for something like the
- [00:03:22.490]flu or strep. We do have a lab on site, so
- [00:03:26.128]we can process all of that here locally so
- [00:03:28.598]that we can get your test results to your
- [00:03:30.578]student as quickly as possible. If an
- [00:03:33.238]X-ray is needed for some reason, we do
- [00:03:35.188]have radiology equipment on site. If your
- [00:03:38.018]student has an injury, maybe a sports-
- [00:03:40.968]related injury or maybe they had knee
- [00:03:44.328]surgery that they're rehabilitating from.
- [00:03:46.421]We do have a very robust physical therapy
- [00:03:48.786]space where we treat these types of
- [00:03:51.040]students. We actually have one of the
- [00:03:52.840]nicest physical therapy spaces in all
- [00:03:55.338]of the city of Lincoln. We have a large
- [00:03:58.961]aquatherapy pool, a big turf strip, tons
- [00:04:01.191]of equipment, so if your student ever is
- [00:04:03.231]injured and needs that type of help,
- [00:04:04.871]just know we can help them with that.
- [00:04:06.616]And lastly, we know unfortunately COVID-19
- [00:04:09.616]is still around and present in our
- [00:04:11.646]community. So if your student does ever
- [00:04:14.484]develop any sort of symptoms related to
- [00:04:16.434]COVID, just know we offer symptomatic
- [00:04:19.404]testing to help your students.
- [00:04:21.310]So next question is, "How can my student
- [00:04:25.229]manage an ongoing concern?". So we know
- [00:04:28.182]that students aren't just coming into the
- [00:04:30.342]doctor when they're sick with an acute-style
- [00:04:33.912]illness. Some students have developed
- [00:04:36.502]an ongoing concern that needs regular
- [00:04:38.422]treatment and management from a
- [00:04:39.998]doctor. Some common concerns that we
- [00:04:42.678]see in our office are things like diabetes,
- [00:04:44.898]high blood pressure, sexually transmitted
- [00:04:48.308]infection treatment as well as testing.
- [00:04:50.601]Allergy shots is another one. We don't
- [00:04:53.241]have an allergist on staff, but if your
- [00:04:55.771]student already has a prescription for
- [00:04:57.771]regular allergy shots, we can actually
- [00:05:00.551]administer those on site whenever they
- [00:05:02.691]need it. Eating concerns is another one.
- [00:05:05.588]And this is just a short list of examples.
- [00:05:09.097]If your student already has a concern that
- [00:05:13.097]maybe has a flare up from time to time
- [00:05:15.247]or maybe they develop something while
- [00:05:17.356]they're a student, we definitely recommend
- [00:05:19.516]that they come in and make an appointment
- [00:05:21.536]with us as early on in their academic
- [00:05:24.586]career as possible, just so they can establish
- [00:05:26.870]a relationship with a provider so, if they
- [00:05:29.310]do need care for a flare up for example,
- [00:05:33.310]they know who to go to. They have a
- [00:05:34.930]doctor that they can trust on campus.
- [00:05:37.070]So if that sounds like something your
- [00:05:39.060]student's dealing with, definitely give
- [00:05:40.620]us a call. We would love to schedule an
- [00:05:42.433]appointment with them.
- [00:05:44.153]Next one is, "How can my student access
- [00:05:47.525]care from a specialist?". So we do have a
- [00:05:49.761]number of specialty clinics on site at the
- [00:05:52.711]health center. We have a transgender
- [00:05:54.891]care clinic for students that are already
- [00:05:57.086]transitioning. Or if your student ever
- [00:05:59.557]decides to transition while they are
- [00:06:01.327]students, we can help them with that.
- [00:06:03.011]We have an eye clinic. So if your student
- [00:06:05.401]needs that annual optometry exam,
- [00:06:08.245]we can do that, which is great. It means
- [00:06:10.545]students can take care of it in between
- [00:06:12.345]classes and not have to wait for break
- [00:06:14.258]to go home and see their optometrist.
- [00:06:16.379]We have an orthopaedics clinic, a
- [00:06:19.189]dermatology clinic. So if your student
- [00:06:21.212]has acne or ever develops a rash or
- [00:06:24.552]dry skin, things like that, the
- [00:06:26.922]dermatology clinic is definitely something
- [00:06:29.192]that might be of interest to your student.
- [00:06:31.518]One of our most important specialty
- [00:06:33.448]services is our mental health medication
- [00:06:36.018]management clinic, sometimes known as
- [00:06:38.478]psychiatry. If your student is taking meds
- [00:06:41.812]for a mental health concern or that
- [00:06:44.114]becomes a need while they're a college
- [00:06:46.014]student, we actually have three providers
- [00:06:48.524]that that's their sole focus is to work
- [00:06:50.484]with students on this type of concern.
- [00:06:52.489]So definitely schedule an appointment if
- [00:06:54.489]that ever happens to your student. And
- [00:06:56.979]then, because we have those types of
- [00:06:59.479]specialty care services in house, it's a
- [00:07:03.479]great benefit to your student because
- [00:07:06.057]our specialists have really close
- [00:07:07.837]relationships with the primary care
- [00:07:09.947]providers on staff. It just ensures a
- [00:07:12.897]really seamless transition of care, and it
- [00:07:16.897]also helps with the collaborative care side
- [00:07:19.737]of things as well.
- [00:07:22.319]So next question is, "How can my student
- [00:07:24.339]be proactive with their health?". What we
- [00:07:26.779]always say to students is never wait until
- [00:07:28.809]you're sick to go see a doctor. Part of
- [00:07:32.040]health and well-being is getting ahead of
- [00:07:34.600]things like this by going in for annual
- [00:07:36.930]checkups. Another common service
- [00:07:40.450]related to this are those annual
- [00:07:42.100]gynecological exams. So if that applies to
- [00:07:44.510]your student, we want students to continue
- [00:07:46.867]doing this while they are a college student.
- [00:07:49.147]We often think of students as really
- [00:07:53.147]healthy young adults, which is true in
- [00:07:55.282]most cases, but sometimes there can be
- [00:07:58.262]warning signs of chronic diseases that
- [00:08:00.996]start showing up in this age group now,
- [00:08:03.216]and the earlier you can catch those
- [00:08:04.906]things, the better. So really encourage
- [00:08:06.986]them to come in for those annual exams.
- [00:08:08.898]We also do things like birth control
- [00:08:10.918]prescriptions. We do immunizations. Not
- [00:08:14.038]just the MMR that's required for the
- [00:08:16.028]university, but everything from
- [00:08:18.228]TDap to HPV vaccines, flu shots, which
- [00:08:21.408]are free for students every year, so we
- [00:08:23.568]encourage students to take advantage
- [00:08:25.144]of that. And many other immunizations as
- [00:08:27.425]well. We also have a Travel Clinic, so if
- [00:08:30.175]your student is studying abroad or
- [00:08:32.637]traveling overseas for vacation, we have
- [00:08:35.327]a travel clinic nurse that can give them
- [00:08:37.170]the required immunizations for their
- [00:08:39.422]place of travel and give them travel tips,
- [00:08:41.996]ways to stay safe while they're on the go.
- [00:08:44.430]So a couple of reasons why we really
- [00:08:47.106]recommend your student come in to
- [00:08:49.176]us for those types of preventive care
- [00:08:51.566]needs is because it means they don't
- [00:08:53.826]have to wait until their home for break
- [00:08:56.147]to schedule those types of appointments.
- [00:08:58.389]They can take care of it while they're on
- [00:09:00.049]campus in between classes. And I mentioned
- [00:09:02.909]this earlier, but it's really important
- [00:09:04.778]for students to establish a relationship
- [00:09:07.245]with a local health care provider so that,
- [00:09:09.528]if they do get sick or something does
- [00:09:11.438]happen, they already have a trusted
- [00:09:13.740]relationship with someone, they know
- [00:09:15.550]who to go to and it just makes their
- [00:09:18.583]experience through that illness a little
- [00:09:21.406]easier because they already have a
- [00:09:22.856]trusted doctor in their life. And then
- [00:09:25.671]we are a safe and easy opportunity for
- [00:09:28.921]your student to practice accessing
- [00:09:31.961]health care on their own for their first
- [00:09:33.841]time. Up until this point, you've probably
- [00:09:36.667]been scheduling your students' health care
- [00:09:39.167]appointments, driving them to the doctor,
- [00:09:41.640]helping them fill out those forms. That's
- [00:09:43.939]very common. But then once they come
- [00:09:45.739]to campus as a student, they're doing
- [00:09:47.859]that all for the first time, and we
- [00:09:50.199]recognize that. We take the time to help
- [00:09:52.999]your student understand the forms
- [00:09:54.669]they are filling out. We work with them
- [00:09:56.769]to help them understand kind of the
- [00:09:58.359]basics of accessing health care, so that
- [00:10:00.389]they can practice it with us, and they're
- [00:10:02.401]experts by the time they leave and go
- [00:10:04.191]out into the real world. So it's just
- [00:10:05.981]another reason to consider coming to us
- [00:10:08.451]for those types of preventive care needs.
- [00:10:11.769]Next question is, "How does my student
- [00:10:13.642]take care of their oral health?" Well
- [00:10:16.592]taking care of your teeth and your mouth
- [00:10:18.233]is super important, especially as a young
- [00:10:20.503]adult. We do have a dental office on the
- [00:10:23.973]second floor of our building that helps
- [00:10:25.834]students with this type of concern.
- [00:10:27.745]We have a staff of licensed dentists
- [00:10:30.535]and dental hygienists that do those
- [00:10:32.901]biannual teeth cleanings and exams.
- [00:10:35.914]And if while they're there, we notice
- [00:10:38.424]you've got a cavity, we can do fillings
- [00:10:40.434]on site, other sorts of treatment
- [00:10:42.374]too, like crowns, bridges, whatever
- [00:10:44.154]your student needs. We do emergency
- [00:10:46.814]care. We know, sometimes, a chipped tooth
- [00:10:49.484]can happen or a tooth pain of some kind.
- [00:10:52.506]We do same day and next day care for
- [00:10:54.686]those types of concerns. Really a couple
- [00:10:57.196]of things that set our Dental Clinic
- [00:10:58.966]apart is, one, we teach students that you
- [00:11:01.736]don't have to be afraid of going to the
- [00:11:03.536]dentist. Our staff are known throughout
- [00:11:06.146]campus as being very, very personable.
- [00:11:08.918]They have conversations with students to
- [00:11:11.088]help distract them to put them at ease
- [00:11:13.158]while they are in the dental chair, which
- [00:11:15.878]is very, very important. And then our staff
- [00:11:18.658]specialize in oral health for college
- [00:11:21.408]students, so they take the time not to
- [00:11:23.913]just you know do a filling and send them on
- [00:11:26.244]their way. They'll actually spend time
- [00:11:28.138]showing them how to brush their teeth,
- [00:11:29.738]showing them how to floss, teaching them
- [00:11:31.737]you know maybe they love energy drinks,
- [00:11:33.974]like how many energy drinks you should
- [00:11:36.434]have and what are some better alternatives
- [00:11:38.334]that are better for your teeth. They
- [00:11:40.638]really take the time to help students
- [00:11:42.508]understand how to protect their oral
- [00:11:44.178]health.
- [00:11:46.085]The next question is, "How does my student
- [00:11:48.185]get medicine on campus?". We
- [00:11:50.485]actually have a full service pharmacy
- [00:11:52.444]located right inside the main entrance
- [00:11:54.725]of our building, so one of the first
- [00:11:56.595]things you'll see when you walk in.
- [00:11:58.420]So the bread and butter of what we do,
- [00:12:00.400]obviously, are filling prescriptions.
- [00:12:02.773]So if your student is currently taking a
- [00:12:05.929]prescription, it's very easy to transfer
- [00:12:08.409]it to us. Your student would just need to
- [00:12:10.424]call the pharmacy and have their
- [00:12:12.446]prescription bottle with them that says
- [00:12:14.584]they have refills remaining. The
- [00:12:16.124]pharmacist might ask them a couple
- [00:12:17.684]questions about what's on the pill
- [00:12:19.274]bottle. And then they'll get it set up
- [00:12:21.054]so they can pick up their prescription
- [00:12:23.394]on campus. So if your student is taking
- [00:12:25.934]a prescription now, we really recommend
- [00:12:27.926]your student go ahead and go through
- [00:12:29.761]the process of transferring it so it's ready
- [00:12:31.918]for them to pick up as soon as they come
- [00:12:33.393]to campus in the fall. But if your
- [00:12:35.888]student does get prescribed a medicine
- [00:12:38.877]while they're on campus, whether it's
- [00:12:41.176]from our own doctor or maybe they're
- [00:12:43.326]seeing, you know, an urgent care doctor
- [00:12:45.241]out in the community, tell them to have
- [00:12:48.128]those prescriptions sent to the
- [00:12:49.668]University Health Center pharmacy for
- [00:12:51.798]pickup. Refills are really easy. We have a
- [00:12:54.410]mobile app that your students can
- [00:12:56.011]use. We have lots of different pickup
- [00:12:59.191]options for them. We also do
- [00:13:00.918]free mail order. So let's say your student
- [00:13:03.318]is going home for summer break.
- [00:13:04.978]They can actually just transition their
- [00:13:07.507]prescriptions to be mailed to them
- [00:13:09.237]if they're living within the state of
- [00:13:10.847]Nebraska. And we can do 60- and 90-day
- [00:13:13.206]supplies for that as well.
- [00:13:14.906]Certain prescriptions are offered
- [00:13:17.776]at a discounted rate. I would
- [00:13:19.336]recommend you call the pharmacy
- [00:13:20.896]to learn more about that. Then we have
- [00:13:22.916]a full selection of over-the-counter
- [00:13:25.637]items, so all the basics that you'd find
- [00:13:28.316]at a drugstore you can pick up with us.
- [00:13:30.496]That's things like pain relievers, first
- [00:13:32.743]aid kit supplies, personal hygiene
- [00:13:34.869]products, all of that. We are known for
- [00:13:37.264]having a much better price than if you
- [00:13:39.574]go off campus as well. Make sure you
- [00:13:41.865]encourage your students to take
- [00:13:43.135]advantage of that. If they ever have
- [00:13:44.787]medication they need to dispose of,
- [00:13:46.402]maybe it's expired or not used anymore,
- [00:13:49.392]we have a safe medication disposal box
- [00:13:52.725]in our pharmacy that they can use any
- [00:13:54.905]time.
- [00:13:56.805]So next, let's talk about how your student
- [00:13:58.805]can access care with us. So the first
- [00:14:01.299]thing to know is that we do require
- [00:14:03.589]appointments for most services.
- [00:14:05.961]We're not really like an urgent care
- [00:14:08.447]facility in that you know we don't
- [00:14:10.835]encourage students to just walk over
- [00:14:12.705]and then expect to see a provider as
- [00:14:14.864]soon as they get there. We operate on
- [00:14:16.954]an appointment basis so that we can help
- [00:14:18.874]all students with a variety of concerns
- [00:14:21.104]that they have. That being said, we do
- [00:14:24.229]have same day appointments available
- [00:14:25.939]on a first come, first serve basis,
- [00:14:27.439]depending on the symptoms your student
- [00:14:29.421]has. So if they need to be seen right
- [00:14:31.332]away, we still are going to be able to
- [00:14:33.732]help them with that, we just want them
- [00:14:35.462]to call ahead of time, and then that way
- [00:14:36.950]they know exactly what time to show up
- [00:14:39.196]that day for their same-day appointment.
- [00:14:40.832]Make sure you remind them to schedule it
- [00:14:43.124]by calling us. This is our phone number
- [00:14:45.839]for appointments, the 5000 one
- [00:14:47.839]listed here. It's really, really important
- [00:14:50.156]that your student just goes ahead and
- [00:14:51.916]adds that number to their phone
- [00:14:53.551]contacts so that they've got it whenever
- [00:14:55.551]they need it. The last thing you want
- [00:14:57.561]to do wen you're sick is be searching
- [00:14:59.249]for the phone number to make an
- [00:15:00.819]appointment with the health center.
- [00:15:02.176]So taking that proactive step, having in
- [00:15:04.186]their phone is going to make a big
- [00:15:05.646]difference. And then the next thing you
- [00:15:07.922]need to know is that we do require
- [00:15:10.184]parental consent. If your student is 18 or
- [00:15:12.742]younger. So in the state of Nebraska
- [00:15:15.068]the age of consent here is 19. If you have
- [00:15:18.898]a student that's 18 or younger, here's
- [00:15:20.668]what you need to do. You need to fill out
- [00:15:24.108]a Power of Attorney form. If your student
- [00:15:26.237]is 18, this gives your permission for us
- [00:15:29.807]to treat your student should they need it
- [00:15:32.141]when they come in. You can learn all about
- [00:15:34.751]this form and you can download this
- [00:15:36.401]form on our website. Just type in "Power
- [00:15:38.405]of Attorney" in the search function of
- [00:15:40.461]our website, and it will pop right up.
- [00:15:42.579]Consent to treat is another option for
- [00:15:45.054]17-year-olds because this form is not
- [00:15:47.252]legal until they turn 18. So if you have a
- [00:15:49.818]17-year-old, just know that when they come
- [00:15:51.847]in to the health center, our medical
- [00:15:54.080]receptionist will be calling you at the
- [00:15:55.850]time of their appointment to get verbal
- [00:15:58.170]consent to treat them just by calling you
- [00:16:00.870]over the phone.
- [00:16:02.140]We know it's common to have lots of
- [00:16:04.070]questions about how this works,
- [00:16:05.840]especially if you come from a state
- [00:16:07.650]where the legal age of consent is 18.
- [00:16:09.731]So if you need to learn more, please give
- [00:16:12.222]us a call. We'd be happy to talk you
- [00:16:14.242]through this form and everything
- [00:16:15.912]you need to know.
- [00:16:17.610]The next question is, "How can my
- [00:16:19.490]students prepare for an appointment?".
- [00:16:21.743]The first thing is, we want your student
- [00:16:23.683]to know that they need to sign up for the
- [00:16:26.271]patient portal. They'll get a link for the
- [00:16:28.991]patient portal when they schedule that
- [00:16:31.007]first appointment. We just want them to
- [00:16:32.777]look for that and set it up. That's what
- [00:16:35.407]they'll use to message their doctor, to
- [00:16:37.807]schedule certain return visits, to
- [00:16:39.737]get testing results, and all that.
- [00:16:41.641]We want to make sure they have that
- [00:16:43.751]all set up before they arrive. There
- [00:16:45.881]is an eCheck-In process to help save
- [00:16:48.051]them time. We don't expect you to
- [00:16:49.811]remember that right now, but just for
- [00:16:51.633]your own information, that's something
- [00:16:53.353]that they'll be reminded about when they
- [00:16:55.043]make an appointment. When they do
- [00:16:57.263]schedule an appointment, we want them
- [00:16:59.023]to get here 15 minutes early. That just
- [00:17:01.293]gives them enough time to get checked
- [00:17:03.123]in and fill out all the necessary
- [00:17:05.403]paperwork. They will need to bring a
- [00:17:07.393]form of government ID with them and
- [00:17:09.463]an insurance card, so the ID could be
- [00:17:11.613]something like a driver's license or
- [00:17:13.575]passport or, if nothing else, they could
- [00:17:15.815]always bring in their NCard.
- [00:17:17.658]And then as far as the insurance card
- [00:17:19.487]goes, if your student doesn't have
- [00:17:21.277]their own card, they can use a picture or
- [00:17:23.726]a copy of yours as a parent. But it just
- [00:17:26.845]needs to be of the front and the back
- [00:17:28.835]sides of the card to get it on file, and
- [00:17:31.355]then we do still require masks in our
- [00:17:33.705]clinical spaces right now. So make sure
- [00:17:35.885]your student brings in a mask or we have
- [00:17:37.765]masks available for them if they need it.
- [00:17:41.503]So how does my student pay for care?
- [00:17:43.893]This is one of the most common questions
- [00:17:45.860]we get. So the most important thing to
- [00:17:47.860]know is that, just like any typical
- [00:17:49.932]doctor's office, there are going to be
- [00:17:51.889]charges for services. But one of the
- [00:17:54.190]advantages of using the health center is
- [00:17:56.519]that the student fees that your student
- [00:17:58.402]pays with their tuition cover certain
- [00:18:00.369]services at the health center. There's
- [00:18:02.459]a full list of what is covered and is not
- [00:18:04.629]covered by the student fee on our
- [00:18:06.755]website under the Billing and Insurance
- [00:18:09.005]tab. We recommend you go check that
- [00:18:11.025]out. Some things that are covered are
- [00:18:13.195]usually a couple of different types of
- [00:18:15.251]office visits, certain doctor-ordered
- [00:18:18.384]lab testing, your annual flu shot and
- [00:18:21.334]things like that. Go online to learn more
- [00:18:23.724]about what is covered. Anything that's left
- [00:18:26.844]over that's not covered by student fees
- [00:18:29.206]would just get submitted to private
- [00:18:31.467]insurance, and that's why we have your
- [00:18:33.363]student bring their insurance card in with
- [00:18:35.563]them. If they don't have insurance,
- [00:18:37.604]the university offers a health insurance
- [00:18:39.534]plan that they can voluntarily enroll in.
- [00:18:41.604]They can also choose to pay out of
- [00:18:43.784]pocket if they don't have insurance, and
- [00:18:46.319]we offer a discounted rate for that for
- [00:18:48.989]some students. We know that, if they
- [00:18:51.812]don't have insurance, it can be really
- [00:18:53.743]burdensome to pay for health care,
- [00:18:55.934]and if that sounds like a realty for your
- [00:18:58.354]student, just know that we offer
- [00:19:00.153]a financial assistance program
- [00:19:02.049]through Nebraska Medicine. We
- [00:19:03.849]would encourage your students to
- [00:19:05.449]apply for that if they need it.
- [00:19:07.019]And then anything that is not covered
- [00:19:08.829]by student fees or by insurance will be
- [00:19:11.260]billed to your student, and it will be
- [00:19:13.038]their responsibility to pay. Typically,
- [00:19:15.550]that balance actually just gets rolled
- [00:19:17.810]over into their MyRed account where
- [00:19:20.050]they pay for their tuition. It will show
- [00:19:21.970]up as something generic like "Health
- [00:19:23.810]Center charge," and they can pay for
- [00:19:25.986]it along with their tuition and anything
- [00:19:28.662]else that they need. And usually that
- [00:19:30.832]charge is going to show up about 30 days
- [00:19:32.878]after the visit. If your student ever has
- [00:19:35.018]a question about a charge, we have a
- [00:19:36.776]Billing and Insurance representative that
- [00:19:39.143]they can call or come see in-person
- [00:19:41.223]anytime to ask those questions as well.
- [00:19:44.415]So before I leave you, I just want to
- [00:19:46.565]leave you with a couple of quick tips
- [00:19:48.515]of ways that you can help your student
- [00:19:50.015]protect their physical well-being. The
- [00:19:51.995]first is to send a first aid kit with them.
- [00:19:54.167]So they should have one in their dorm
- [00:19:56.337]and they should also have on in their car
- [00:19:58.187]if they have a vehicle up here with them.
- [00:20:00.587]So things like band-aids, antibiotic
- [00:20:04.587]ointment, any sort of over-the-counter
- [00:20:06.777]items that they typically take, we want
- [00:20:08.767]them to have that available to them
- [00:20:10.557]should they need it. We also need your
- [00:20:12.836]help in reminding them to schedule those
- [00:20:15.152]preventive care appointments. Like I
- [00:20:16.862]mentioned earlier, as a first time
- [00:20:18.702]health-care user and just as a busy
- [00:20:20.742]college student, the last thing on your
- [00:20:22.764]mind is scheduling that annual exam,
- [00:20:24.895]for example. So we need to lean on you
- [00:20:28.055]a little bit to just give your student a
- [00:20:30.025]little nudge, remind them to schedule
- [00:20:31.832]those types of visits and take care of
- [00:20:34.242]their health. While they're a student
- [00:20:36.163]here, you also might want to talk to
- [00:20:38.749]them about your family medical
- [00:20:40.438]history if that' not a conversation
- [00:20:42.218]you've had before. We're going to
- [00:20:44.309]ask questions like that on the forms
- [00:20:46.839]that they fill out. And then physicals,
- [00:20:48.789]for example, is another time they would
- [00:20:50.958]need to know that information.
- [00:20:52.751]Plus them knowing that is going to empower
- [00:20:55.296]them and give them knowledge that
- [00:20:57.034]they need for future health care visits
- [00:20:59.162]even past their time here at the
- [00:21:01.042]university, so it's definitely a good
- [00:21:03.392]conversation to have before they come to
- [00:21:05.411]campus. You might need to help them set
- [00:21:07.991]realistic expectations around health care
- [00:21:10.315]in terms of helping them understand
- [00:21:12.498]how to make an appointment, why
- [00:21:14.320]that's important, you know how to show
- [00:21:16.840]up early for an appointment, things
- [00:21:18.770]like that that they might be kind of new
- [00:21:20.680]to. We're going to help them with that as
- [00:21:22.749]well, but as a parent if you can help
- [00:21:24.979]support us in that, it does make things
- [00:21:26.759]easier for your student, and then just
- [00:21:29.189]encourage them to keep practicing
- [00:21:30.988]pandemic prevention measures like
- [00:21:33.008]I already said COVID-19 is still around. And
- [00:21:35.848]the updates around COVID-19 and how
- [00:21:39.848]it affects your student at the university
- [00:21:42.038]will change throughout their time here
- [00:21:44.862]as a student. So the way to stay up to
- [00:21:47.208]date with all those changes is checking
- [00:21:49.348]out COVID-19.unl.edu. That website's going
- [00:21:52.828]to have the latest and greatest
- [00:21:54.308]information for your student. And please
- [00:21:57.698]stay connected to us. Like I said, make
- [00:22:00.240]sure you have your students save our
- [00:22:02.470]appointment line number in their phone.
- [00:22:04.648]We also encourage you and your student
- [00:22:06.208]to bookmark our website health.unl.edu
- [00:22:09.113]where you can learn all about everything
- [00:22:11.226]we've talked about today and more.
- [00:22:12.870]If you or your student are active on
- [00:22:14.854]social, we are very active on Instagram
- [00:22:17.684]and Twitter. We're on Facebook, we maybe
- [00:22:20.214]don't post as much, but you can follow
- [00:22:21.944]us there, too, if you'd like to stay
- [00:22:23.454]up-to-date. And we do have a Nebraska
- [00:22:25.304]Medicine app that your students can use
- [00:22:27.487]for their patient portal. So remind your
- [00:22:29.793]student to download that and get it all
- [00:22:31.503]set up and ready to go before they
- [00:22:33.133]come to campus as well. Thank you so
- [00:22:35.360]much for your time. I hope you learned
- [00:22:36.966]some great information from me
- [00:22:38.382]today. If you do have questions or
- [00:22:40.213]need anything, please feel free to
- [00:22:41.871]peruse our website or to give us a
- [00:22:43.652]call at the 5000 number above, and
- [00:22:46.319]we'd be happy to answer your questions.
- [00:22:48.365]Thanks so much, and have a great day!
