- [00:00:02.170]Hello everyone.
- [00:00:03.350]Today, we're gonna be talking about some general tips
- [00:00:05.560]and tricks for commuter students
- [00:00:07.120]as you start your journey here at UNL.
- [00:00:09.510]My name is Emily Klesner and I work
- [00:00:11.700]in new student enrollment as an orientation coordinator.
- [00:00:15.030]In today's session we're gonna be talking to you
- [00:00:16.510]about preparing for your first day of classes.
- [00:00:19.080]So different transportation options and parking
- [00:00:21.490]as well as making connections here on campus.
- [00:00:24.490]So before your first day of classes on campus
- [00:00:26.470]a couple things that can be helpful to help you be prepared
- [00:00:29.430]before you show up to your first class
- [00:00:31.660]is helping map out your class routes routes.
- [00:00:34.690]So this can be helpful to know how long it takes
- [00:00:36.960]to get between your different buildings on campus,
- [00:00:39.190]know where your buildings are.
- [00:00:40.320]That way you're not running between classes
- [00:00:43.150]trying to find out where a building is on your first day.
- [00:00:46.780]If you don't know how to do this very well
- [00:00:49.270]or you're worried that you don't know where
- [00:00:50.640]a lot of the buildings are, you can come onto campus
- [00:00:53.140]during Big Red Welcome which is our welcome week activities
- [00:00:56.120]the week before classes start
- [00:00:57.880]and we'll have class routes tours.
- [00:00:59.360]So an orientation leader will help you walk around campus.
- [00:01:03.050]If you bring your class schedule
- [00:01:04.300]they can help find all your buildings
- [00:01:05.950]and help you figure out where your classes will be.
- [00:01:08.180]That will you're prepared on your first few days
- [00:01:11.320]and also can be helpful to plan out your transportation
- [00:01:14.050]and parking, knowing how you're getting to campus
- [00:01:16.150]and where you're gonna park once you get here.
- [00:01:17.710]And we'll talk about that in a moment
- [00:01:19.550]and also just planning for each day.
- [00:01:21.615]Your class schedules might be different every day.
- [00:01:24.140]And so thinking through, you know
- [00:01:25.510]when are your meals gonna be, what are your meals gonna be?
- [00:01:28.150]What books and supplies you need for each of those classes
- [00:01:31.110]and being prepared for that every day before you leave home.
- [00:01:35.760]So one of the most helpful things for commuter students
- [00:01:37.900]for navigating campus is our UNL maps.
- [00:01:40.850]So this map screenshot here is straight off of our website.
- [00:01:43.950]It's just maps.unl.edu.
- [00:01:46.820]You can go on here and you can type in different buildings.
- [00:01:49.710]If you have your class schedule, you can type those
- [00:01:51.640]into the search bar in the top corner there
- [00:01:54.170]and it'll pull up exactly what building you want to see.
- [00:01:57.330]You can also see the toggles down below
- [00:01:59.300]so you can find different bike racks,
- [00:02:01.500]all the different parking options.
- [00:02:03.130]Those purple arrows you see on the top and bottom
- [00:02:05.370]of the screen, when you're in the web browser,
- [00:02:07.990]these are live buses that are going around,
- [00:02:11.460]the city buses, so you can see exactly where they are
- [00:02:14.140]and how close they might be to your stop.
- [00:02:18.550]So for when it comes to parking, you have a lot
- [00:02:20.900]of different options as a commuter student.
- [00:02:23.420]One of our most popular options here
- [00:02:25.420]is our non-reserved lots or commuter permits.
- [00:02:28.840]So these lots are just large lots, and a couple different
- [00:02:31.990]places are on campus that students can come and go from.
- [00:02:35.250]They don't have any reserved parking spots.
- [00:02:37.310]It's just, if you have a permit for that lot, you can park
- [00:02:39.720]in any of the parking spaces that are available there.
- [00:02:44.170]And kind of contrast to that we also have reserved permits
- [00:02:47.840]and we have two different lots on campus
- [00:02:49.510]that hold these reserve permits.
- [00:02:51.760]And these are gonna sell only the exact number
- [00:02:54.380]of spots that are available in a particular lot.
- [00:02:58.270]So some students like to do this, 'cause they always know
- [00:03:00.400]they'll show up and have a parking spot exactly
- [00:03:02.610]where they want it to be.
- [00:03:04.220]But it does cost a little bit more as you can see.
- [00:03:07.240]Our third option we have is our parking garages.
- [00:03:09.770]We have five different parking garages on campus
- [00:03:11.900]that you could choose from.
- [00:03:13.400]I will note that when you buy a pass for a parking garage
- [00:03:16.790]you are only buying a pass for one particular garage.
- [00:03:20.380]You can't bounce around between the garages
- [00:03:22.540]like you can with the commuter lots.
- [00:03:24.650]You have to park in one singular garage with your pass.
- [00:03:28.200]And then our last option and also our most affordable option
- [00:03:30.800]is our perimeter parking permits.
- [00:03:33.150]These lots are up on the edge of campus.
- [00:03:35.470]So just a little bit more of a walk
- [00:03:37.380]but saves you a lot of money
- [00:03:38.670]and still very convenient and close to all of your classes.
- [00:03:42.440]As you can see here, all of these passes
- [00:03:44.360]come in either an annual or a nine-month option.
- [00:03:46.730]That annual option will start in August
- [00:03:48.790]right before classes and go all the way
- [00:03:50.860]to the next year's August when classes start
- [00:03:53.750]and you also can get it in a nine months.
- [00:03:55.820]So that would be just mid August to mid May
- [00:03:58.820]just when fall and spring semesters are in session.
- [00:04:01.680]And if you do get one of these and you want
- [00:04:03.910]to change it later, or you want to extend it or shorten it,
- [00:04:06.790]all you have to do is talk with parking and transit services
- [00:04:09.550]and you could make those adjustments very easily
- [00:04:11.620]and get some of your money back if you cut it earlier,
- [00:04:14.860]whatever it may be for you.
- [00:04:16.760]And then lastly here, these permits do work on City Campus,
- [00:04:19.750]East Campus and Innovation Campus.
- [00:04:21.390]You only need one singular pass to be on any campus.
- [00:04:24.520]I'll talk a little bit more about that in a moment.
- [00:04:28.150]So this is our map here of City and Innovation Campus.
- [00:04:30.650]You'll see down at the bottom we have a big red star.
- [00:04:33.610]That is City Campus Union just to kind of help
- [00:04:36.310]get your bearings a little bit.
- [00:04:37.850]And then we also have a football over Memorial Stadium
- [00:04:40.960]just to help you see where things are.
- [00:04:42.960]So you'll see all of these green lots
- [00:04:44.580]around kind of the middle of the screen.
- [00:04:46.580]Those are those commuter non-reserved lots.
- [00:04:49.000]So if you have one of these passes
- [00:04:50.300]you can park in any of these green lots at any time
- [00:04:53.830]as long as there's a spot open for you,
- [00:04:55.750]which there usually is.
- [00:04:57.049]You can park anywhere you'd like to in any of those.
- [00:04:59.930]Next, we have those reserved lots.
- [00:05:01.830]Like I said, there's only two of those.
- [00:05:03.280]They're much smaller, but they, they do sell
- [00:05:06.490]a lot more limited passes.
- [00:05:08.080]So they are a little harder to get a pass for,
- [00:05:10.760]but can be very convenient if that's something
- [00:05:13.000]that you're interested in.
- [00:05:14.930]Here, we have our five parking garages that you'll see.
- [00:05:18.030]So like I said, you can only pick one garage
- [00:05:20.160]if you get a garage pass.
- [00:05:21.380]So do be sure that you think about where your classes are
- [00:05:24.067]and pick the garage that'll be most convenient for you.
- [00:05:27.460]And lastly, you'll see, we have these perimeter lots.
- [00:05:29.450]Most of them are up by Innovation Campus.
- [00:05:31.940]I will note that if you do park in the far north
- [00:05:35.640]perimeter parking lots, there are a lot of walking paths
- [00:05:38.400]that get you from Innovation Campus over to City Campus.
- [00:05:41.960]So you don't have to cross that large intersection
- [00:05:44.500]that you can see there.
- [00:05:45.410]You can walk in like a foot bridge underneath the road
- [00:05:49.050]and you don't have to worry about traffic at all.
- [00:05:50.940]So it's very safe.
- [00:05:53.190]Over on East Campus, all of the passes
- [00:05:56.350]that we just talked about on City Campus
- [00:05:58.460]will all come over here and turn into either
- [00:06:01.270]commuter parking passes.
- [00:06:03.360]If you have a non-reserved commuter lot pass
- [00:06:07.070]or a reserve pass or a garage pass
- [00:06:09.880]then you automatically can park in any of the commuter lots
- [00:06:13.090]on East Campus.
- [00:06:14.030]And then if you have a perimeter lot
- [00:06:15.840]then you still have to park in the perimeter parking
- [00:06:17.860]that is on East Campus.
- [00:06:18.990]So you'll see here, there's a lot of commuter parking
- [00:06:22.060]'cause that's the main parking we have on East Campus.
- [00:06:24.200]So there's lots of options.
- [00:06:25.460]So if you have one class over here, you need to pop over.
- [00:06:28.300]It's very easy to do.
- [00:06:29.913]Our red star here, that is our East Campus Union
- [00:06:32.810]and our ice cream cone is where the dairy store is,
- [00:06:35.350]just to help you get your bearings a little bit.
- [00:06:38.040]And then of course we have our two perimeter lots
- [00:06:39.740]up at the top.
- [00:06:40.573]So that's the one pass that will say the exact same
- [00:06:43.590]from City Campus.
- [00:06:46.400]Just a few other notes for parking.
- [00:06:48.410]All of our parking permits are going digital.
- [00:06:50.740]So you won't have a literal sticker or a tag.
- [00:06:54.210]You will be able to do it all by the license plate.
- [00:06:57.890]Parking and transit services will be able to know
- [00:06:59.810]if you have the correct permit or not
- [00:07:01.190]just by knowing what your license plate number is.
- [00:07:03.367]The only exception would be the garages
- [00:07:05.970]that would need a pass to make the gate go up.
- [00:07:09.220]If you do need any accessible parking permits
- [00:07:11.230]all you need to do is just show the proof of need
- [00:07:14.190]to parking and transit services and they can help you
- [00:07:16.270]get settled with the pass that works best for you.
- [00:07:19.876]Also, if you do have a motorcycle
- [00:07:22.270]you do not need a specific pass for your motorcycle
- [00:07:25.170]but you are required to register that you will be parking
- [00:07:27.700]on campus, but you don't have to purchase anything.
- [00:07:30.580]And then lastly, we do have Husker Safe Walk.
- [00:07:32.710]So this is a free program offered to students.
- [00:07:34.970]All you do is you call into our UNL campus police
- [00:07:38.960]and they send either a police officer
- [00:07:40.700]or a security guard to wherever your location is on campus.
- [00:07:44.040]And then they'll walk you to any other location on campus.
- [00:07:46.660]So say you're working in the library late at night
- [00:07:49.090]and you parked in one of those very far north
- [00:07:51.300]perimeter lots and it is just a really long walk
- [00:07:54.140]late at night in the dark.
- [00:07:55.220]And you don't wanna do that by yourself.
- [00:07:56.830]All you have to do is call Husker Safe Walk
- [00:07:58.440]and they'll send somebody over to the library
- [00:08:00.190]and they will escort you all the way up
- [00:08:01.810]to wherever your car is up in one of those perimeter lots.
- [00:08:05.550]And it can be that far of a walk or it can honestly be
- [00:08:07.990]between one building to the next.
- [00:08:09.480]They'll do whatever makes you feel the safest on campus.
- [00:08:12.617]And I will say we do a very safe campus.
- [00:08:14.699]Many students don't feel that they need to use this service
- [00:08:18.730]because they feel safe walking across campus
- [00:08:20.830]but it is always available for you
- [00:08:22.300]if you would ever want to use it.
- [00:08:25.420]Some other transportation options if you don't have a car
- [00:08:27.950]or don't want to choose to drive your car to campus.
- [00:08:31.230]Bikes are a great option.
- [00:08:32.730]We have a lot of students who bike onto campus
- [00:08:35.050]and around campus.
- [00:08:36.740]We do ask that you register your bikes for free
- [00:08:38.990]with the UNL police on the website.
- [00:08:41.310]This just ensures that if you would accidentally
- [00:08:43.240]leave your bike somewhere, especially over a break
- [00:08:45.540]or something, that it wouldn't get donated
- [00:08:47.880]because it was registered to a student.
- [00:08:50.620]As you saw on our maps screenshot a few slides back,
- [00:08:54.260]we do have a ton of bike racks all throughout campus.
- [00:08:56.740]Pretty much every building has at least one bike rack
- [00:08:58.740]out in front of it.
- [00:08:59.573]So it's very easy to have somewhere to put your bike
- [00:09:01.590]if you wanna go between classes.
- [00:09:03.630]Our outdoor adventure shop also does safety checks,
- [00:09:06.380]repairs and rentals.
- [00:09:08.000]If you ever need help with your bike or you'd like
- [00:09:10.100]to rent a bike, we also have (indistinct) in Lincoln.
- [00:09:13.650]In general, we have bike LNK and then you can use this code
- [00:09:17.190]and you can rent their bikes at their bike kiosk
- [00:09:19.900]for just $25 a year.
- [00:09:21.660]You get unlimited one hour rides.
- [00:09:23.690]So all you gotta do is pop over to the kiosk,
- [00:09:25.550]grab a bike and return it within the hour.
- [00:09:27.630]And you have to just pay that one time flat rate fee.
- [00:09:30.210]A lot of our students like this
- [00:09:31.240]especially if they're going, you know into downtown
- [00:09:33.700]or over at Haymarket, they wanna go a little farther
- [00:09:36.280]but they don't wanna have a bike on campus all the time.
- [00:09:38.260]This can be a really great option.
- [00:09:40.510]And then lastly, we do have the city buses
- [00:09:42.760]that not only go between all three of our campuses
- [00:09:45.380]but also go all over Lincoln.
- [00:09:47.150]It's a really great option.
- [00:09:48.330]A lot of our students use this to get onto campus
- [00:09:50.950]or between campuses.
- [00:09:52.850]Right now the city of Lincoln is not requiring fares
- [00:09:56.100]for the buses due to COVID.
- [00:09:57.960]So students are not required to have a bus pass right now.
- [00:10:00.340]It's just free to hop on for everyone.
- [00:10:02.730]If at some point they do reinstate and they do decide
- [00:10:06.020]to have the passes required again,
- [00:10:08.070]students get a free bus pass and parking
- [00:10:10.030]and transit services will share all that information
- [00:10:12.700]with students, how to download it and what to do
- [00:10:15.030]if the city decides to bring that back.
- [00:10:19.740]So next we wanna talk about here just making UNL
- [00:10:22.350]a home away from home.
- [00:10:23.960]So a couple ways to do this.
- [00:10:25.170]Participating in student organizations are a great way
- [00:10:27.900]to be involved and be a part of campus.
- [00:10:31.000]You can be at different clubs, you can be
- [00:10:32.710]in intramurals sports, whatever fits your interest.
- [00:10:35.910]We have something for you.
- [00:10:38.020]Joining study groups can be a great way
- [00:10:39.800]to not only connect people in your class
- [00:10:41.730]but also within your college, making friends
- [00:10:43.970]that'll be going through classes with you
- [00:10:45.810]for the next few years and just help you keep,
- [00:10:48.950]keep you on campus a little bit more.
- [00:10:51.020]Using our campus facilities.
- [00:10:52.470]We know it can be really easy to say,
- [00:10:53.930]oh I'll just go back home and I'll study there.
- [00:10:56.610]But we know that doesn't really usually work.
- [00:10:58.280]Usually home can be a little bit more distracting.
- [00:11:00.260]So finding great places to study and work out
- [00:11:03.210]and meet your friends here on campus,
- [00:11:05.370]utilizing the different spaces and resources that we have
- [00:11:08.320]can be really helpful to make you feel
- [00:11:09.830]like you're a little more part of campus.
- [00:11:11.950]And then lastly, a great option is also working on campus.
- [00:11:15.150]We know many students need a job to support their education.
- [00:11:18.260]And so we have so many different options all around campus
- [00:11:21.400]that you could be a part of.
- [00:11:22.695]These supervisors, they know what it's like to be a student.
- [00:11:26.460]They work with students all the time
- [00:11:28.510]so they can be a lot more flexible in understanding
- [00:11:31.235]working with your class schedule and doing a couple hours
- [00:11:34.210]on different days to give you that great job
- [00:11:37.040]but still be able to take of your academics.
- [00:11:42.360]So when it comes to eating on campus,
- [00:11:44.070]we have a lot of options for you.
- [00:11:46.260]The UNL dining centers are really great
- [00:11:48.660]for commuter students.
- [00:11:49.570]Often people think that it's only for students
- [00:11:51.590]who live in the residence halls, but they have meal plans
- [00:11:54.520]created just for commuter students.
- [00:11:56.430]So you could also go in there on random one off times
- [00:11:59.590]and purchase a meal as well.
- [00:12:02.300]The C stores are our convenient stores around campus.
- [00:12:05.150]They have a lot of different grab and go options
- [00:12:06.940]with drinks and snacks and foods that work well really well.
- [00:12:11.690]We have a lot of restaurants in our union
- [00:12:13.330]and downtown that you could purchase food from.
- [00:12:16.580]A lot of the downtown restaurants
- [00:12:17.900]are within a block or two.
- [00:12:19.340]They're very convenient and close to campus.
- [00:12:22.270]And then lastly, if you do choose to bring your own meals
- [00:12:24.300]we do have microwaves available in the union
- [00:12:26.900]across from the Subway and then
- [00:12:28.700]in the Adele Learning Commons which is the north side
- [00:12:31.170]of the library where Dunkin Donuts is.
- [00:12:33.430]So those are free and available for students at any time.
- [00:12:35.730]So you can bring a lunch and use that.
- [00:12:38.550]If you need a little bit of storage on campus
- [00:12:40.860]we do a couple locker options at the library
- [00:12:43.100]or the rec that you can rent for this semester or per month
- [00:12:47.010]if you would like to store some things on campus
- [00:12:48.967]and not have to drag it back and forth.
- [00:12:51.120]And then we also have some bike locker rentals
- [00:12:53.340]with campus rec if you want to keep your bike safe
- [00:12:55.910]when you're not using it.
- [00:12:59.640]So a great way for students, commuter students to connect
- [00:13:02.550]with other commuter students will be through
- [00:13:04.330]our Big Red Welcome.
- [00:13:05.680]So throughout the whole week of Big Red Welcome
- [00:13:07.480]we are gonna have what we call commuter student connects
- [00:13:10.280]and what these are, are before a lot of our large events
- [00:13:13.520]throughout the week, we will have an orientation leader
- [00:13:16.740]ready at that event to gather up all the commuter students.
- [00:13:20.050]You'll have a person you can go directly to
- [00:13:22.320]and then other commuter students
- [00:13:23.680]that you can enjoy this event with.
- [00:13:25.790]'Cause we know that a lot of students don't want
- [00:13:27.230]to go to events by themselves.
- [00:13:28.640]I don't wanna, I don't like going to events
- [00:13:29.980]by myself either.
- [00:13:30.820]So coming to these, knowing that you will have a group
- [00:13:33.610]of students who are in similar situations to you
- [00:13:36.430]to get to know and meet and then enjoy these events with
- [00:13:39.180]will be a really fun opportunity to see all of those
- [00:13:43.450]and what a schedule will look like.
- [00:13:44.540]You'll wanna download our Nebraska app.
- [00:13:46.790]That way you can see the full schedule
- [00:13:48.340]of all Big Red Welcome.
- [00:13:50.070]And then an event that we have specifically
- [00:13:51.650]for commuter students.
- [00:13:53.120]We do have a commuter student welcome.
- [00:13:55.100]This will take place in the Adele Learning Commons
- [00:13:57.270]which is the north side of the library.
- [00:13:59.200]We're gonna be giving out free Dunkin Donuts
- [00:14:01.570]and Great and Glory shirts.
- [00:14:03.410]This will be come and go from .3:30 to four
- [00:14:05.740]on Friday, August 19th.
- [00:14:08.520]That'll be a great time to meet other commuter students,
- [00:14:10.890]get resources from around campus that'll be there.
- [00:14:13.970]And then at 4:00 PM, we're going to take the whole group
- [00:14:16.480]and head over to the tunnel walk, which is
- [00:14:18.510]one of our large tradition events at Memorial Stadium.
- [00:14:23.090]If you do have any questions,
- [00:14:24.060]feel free to contact me on our NSE Mainline.
- [00:14:27.260]I hope you learned a lot today.
- [00:14:28.830]And we look forward to seeing you on campus soon.
