- [00:00:04.850]Hello, my name is Connie Boehm.
- [00:00:06.870]I'm the Director in Big Red Resilience
- [00:00:08.640]and Well-Being here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:11.710]We're thrilled that you are joining us today
- [00:00:15.070]to review our presentation
- [00:00:18.450]on Supporting Mental Health.
- [00:00:21.380]And I am joined by.
- [00:00:24.090]Hi, everyone, my name is Mariah Johnson.
- [00:00:25.700]I am a Counselor and the Outreach Coordinator here at CAPS.
- [00:00:29.510]So we are going to share a little bit
- [00:00:31.710]about what we do in about 20 minutes.
- [00:00:35.690]So we're thrilled to have you join us today.
- [00:00:43.680]Our offices are located in the University Health Center,
- [00:00:47.200]which is off 19th street.
- [00:00:49.470]It is a simple seven minute walk
- [00:00:52.300]from the Nebraska City Union.
- [00:00:54.850]We often hear students say
- [00:00:56.430]that we're so far away from the health center,
- [00:00:59.240]and it's really not that far.
- [00:01:01.500]And Big Red Resilience and Well-Being
- [00:01:03.440]is located right off the parking lot,
- [00:01:05.720]and we have great space there,
- [00:01:07.525]wonderful space for students to come in
- [00:01:09.900]and hang out and interact with us.
- [00:01:13.505]Yes, and we are located on the second floor.
- [00:01:15.740]So we are just next to the medical appointment check-in,
- [00:01:19.375]and you can guide through the different welcome desk,
- [00:01:22.810]if need help finding us.
- [00:01:26.970]I wanted to share, before the rest of our presentation,
- [00:01:30.680]that we are so excited to have a well-being button
- [00:01:34.270]that is on every faculty, staff, and student's Canvas page.
- [00:01:38.970]With a simple click of this button,
- [00:01:42.420]anyone can get to counseling and psychological services
- [00:01:46.120]with one click,
- [00:01:47.310]take the well-being assessment,
- [00:01:49.490]learn about well-being resources
- [00:01:51.600]and sign up for well-being coaching.
- [00:01:54.430]And we have had nearly 15,000 people have hit this button
- [00:01:59.710]in the last couple of years.
- [00:02:01.210]So we're thrilled with the success of that.
- [00:02:05.210]So now I'm gonna share
- [00:02:06.330]about Big Red Resilience and Well-Being.
- [00:02:09.040]Our mission is really to empower students
- [00:02:12.210]to live their best lives now and in the future.
- [00:02:15.030]We tell students that we prepare them
- [00:02:18.000]and help them be healthy while they're here at UNL,
- [00:02:21.680]but as well, we prepare them to be healthy later in life.
- [00:02:25.720]And we would love...
- [00:02:26.990]Our vision is that
- [00:02:28.677]"well-being will be be part of every experience
- [00:02:31.257]"in the lives of Nebraska students."
- [00:02:34.170]And our values are student focused.
- [00:02:36.310]We work with nearly 100 student volunteers
- [00:02:39.180]who help us do everything that we do on our campus.
- [00:02:43.750]We're inclusive, always welcome to everyone.
- [00:02:47.000]And we're innovative.
- [00:02:48.100]We're continually benchmarking other institutions
- [00:02:52.260]and changing what we do
- [00:02:53.800]to better meet the needs of our ever-changing students.
- [00:02:59.100]Wellbeing is interconnected,
- [00:03:01.240]and this is our 10 dimension wheel of well-being.
- [00:03:05.640]And you may say that 10 dimensions seem like a lot
- [00:03:09.370]but actually, our students really share with us
- [00:03:11.730]that they like breaking down their well-being
- [00:03:14.200]into these 10 dimensions,
- [00:03:16.340]because it helps them see that they can make small changes
- [00:03:19.300]in one dimension
- [00:03:20.580]that really impact another dimension as well.
- [00:03:26.650]So now I'm going to go through some specific ways
- [00:03:30.310]that your sons or daughters
- [00:03:32.310]can get involved with Big Red Resilience and Well-being.
- [00:03:35.830]One of our newest initiatives
- [00:03:37.480]is called "Hi, How Are You? Day."
- [00:03:40.120]And we have hi, how are you days
- [00:03:43.600]every month on our campus.
- [00:03:45.400]It's a time where students can come out,
- [00:03:48.020]interact with other student volunteers
- [00:03:50.860]and learn about how to really care for one another.
- [00:03:55.760]How to ask the question, "hi, how are you?"
- [00:03:58.900]And really mean it,
- [00:03:59.927]and really take time to figure out how everyone is doing.
- [00:04:05.450]We have done three of these events so far,
- [00:04:08.540]partnered with CAPS on one of them,
- [00:04:11.390]and really feel like the hi, how are you? days
- [00:04:16.070]are really resonating with students.
- [00:04:18.310]And you'll see the frog down here,
- [00:04:20.800]that is really this symbol for hi, how are you?,
- [00:04:23.620]which, students are really enjoying that.
- [00:04:26.970]So we're thrilled about this
- [00:04:28.240]and we'll continue this initiative all next year,
- [00:04:31.370]at least, with an activity once a month.
- [00:04:35.790]Our well-being ambassadors
- [00:04:37.560]are a group of about 40 student volunteers
- [00:04:42.583]that meet one-on-one with students,
- [00:04:45.920]if students want to meet with them
- [00:04:47.810]and they walk with students in this one-on-one,
- [00:04:51.870]they can do Zoom, or they can meet in person
- [00:04:54.680]in the university health center or anywhere on campus.
- [00:04:58.760]And they are trained to be able to talk with students
- [00:05:02.270]about their well-being.
- [00:05:04.260]We encourage all students
- [00:05:05.470]to go through the well-being assessment
- [00:05:07.790]and then our well-being ambassadors
- [00:05:09.970]will lead them through some different resources
- [00:05:12.760]if there are dimensions of well-being
- [00:05:14.480]that they want to enhance.
- [00:05:16.300]Our well-being ambassadors
- [00:05:17.830]also do presentations across campus.
- [00:05:20.640]We do over a hundred presentations every year.
- [00:05:24.570]And also our ambassadors are our face
- [00:05:28.390]of our outreach events,
- [00:05:29.840]like our Hi How are You Doing? Days.
- [00:05:33.670]Financial well-being is highlighted
- [00:05:35.930]because we are really looking at enhancing what we do
- [00:05:39.410]with financial well-being.
- [00:05:42.230]A portion of our well-being ambassadors
- [00:05:44.340]will be trained to meet one-on-one with students
- [00:05:47.300]to talk with them about their financial well-being.
- [00:05:51.220]Finances are the number two stress
- [00:05:54.010]that has been identified by our students next to academics.
- [00:05:57.630]Our students are struggling with their financial well-being.
- [00:06:01.210]So next year we hope to really do a lot
- [00:06:03.920]of one-on-one appointments with students,
- [00:06:07.100]help them learn how to budget,
- [00:06:09.280]help them learn how to manage
- [00:06:11.260]their multiple online accounts they may have
- [00:06:14.700]from Netflix to Venmo,
- [00:06:18.330]and really help students be aware
- [00:06:22.540]of where their spending goes.
- [00:06:28.268]I wanted to highlight,
- [00:06:29.300]as part of financial well-being, we offer a Husker Pantry.
- [00:06:33.490]We have one on City Campus,
- [00:06:35.320]and one on East Campus,
- [00:06:36.800]where students can come
- [00:06:38.081]and get personal items and food items.
- [00:06:42.480]We have identified about 30%
- [00:06:44.720]of our students are food insecure
- [00:06:47.400]and it's really easy to come to the pantry.
- [00:06:50.030]You can come as many times as you want per week.
- [00:06:53.120]All we ask is that you swipe in with your NU ID
- [00:06:56.690]and that's simply so we can collect demographics
- [00:06:59.900]on who's using our pantry.
- [00:07:02.310]And new this year,
- [00:07:03.300]we have begun to offer pet food supplies as well
- [00:07:08.270]that students can come in and pick up for their pets.
- [00:07:13.580]REACH training is a key component
- [00:07:15.860]of Big Red Resilience and Well-being.
- [00:07:17.770]We have over trained over 5,500 faculty staff and students
- [00:07:22.830]in suicide prevention,
- [00:07:25.360]and we encourage all of our students to attend
- [00:07:29.150]a suicide prevention training.
- [00:07:31.540]It's a 90 minute session,
- [00:07:33.075]where you learn to recognize the warning signs of suicides
- [00:07:37.970]to be able to ask friends or family members
- [00:07:41.540]if they're thinking about suicide
- [00:07:44.410]and then really get them connected to resources.
- [00:07:51.440]Also new this year
- [00:07:52.880]we have a robust Collegiate Recovery Community.
- [00:07:55.940]We've been trying to start
- [00:07:57.250]a collegiate recovery community for three years.
- [00:07:59.930]And we finally have about 20 to 25 students
- [00:08:03.980]that meet weekly,
- [00:08:05.680]that are part of the collegiate recovery community.
- [00:08:08.710]And they are thriving on our campus.
- [00:08:11.190]They are in recovery from alcohol
- [00:08:12.844]and other substance use,
- [00:08:17.070]meet together nearly every day.
- [00:08:18.790]We have official meetings on campus once a week
- [00:08:21.610]but they meet together nearly every day
- [00:08:24.250]and go to other meetings in the community.
- [00:08:26.900]And it's really been incredible to see this community grow.
- [00:08:33.090]So I just wanna close with how you can contact us.
- [00:08:36.740]And I would really encourage you
- [00:08:39.640]to check out our monthly newsletters and sign up for that.
- [00:08:42.810]You'll see that at the bottom here
- [00:08:45.950]or you can email us any questions you might have,
- [00:08:49.440]follow us especially on Instagram.
- [00:08:52.070]We really have some amazing students
- [00:08:55.240]that manage our social media for us.
- [00:08:57.990]And also please check out our website, resilienceunl.edu.
- [00:09:03.070]So that's a little bit about
- [00:09:04.240]Big Red Resilience and Well-being,
- [00:09:05.790]and now I'm going to turn it over to Mariah.
- [00:09:11.250]Awesome, thank you so much.
- [00:09:13.360]So, as I mentioned, my name is Mariah
- [00:09:14.750]one of the counselors and outreach coordinator at CAPS .
- [00:09:17.730]So I'm gonna tell you a little bit about our services today.
- [00:09:21.140]So we are a team made up of a variety of psychologists,
- [00:09:25.610]master's levels clinicians
- [00:09:27.030]and our administrative staff,
- [00:09:29.050]all to serve and support students in their mental health.
- [00:09:31.340]So, we have a team that really specializes
- [00:09:34.820]in a lot of different areas.
- [00:09:35.820]So what I so encourage people to think about
- [00:09:38.060]is there's no issue off limits.
- [00:09:40.250]We have clinicians with a variety of training
- [00:09:42.000]and so we are happy to serve
- [00:09:44.360]and help students within that area.
- [00:09:48.670]We offer a variety of services.
- [00:09:50.330]So things like counseling,
- [00:09:52.010]both individual and group counseling,
- [00:09:54.400]crisis intervention services.
- [00:09:56.430]So those are both in our offices and on call.
- [00:10:00.200]We do offer a variety of specialty services.
- [00:10:02.390]So things like alcohol and drug,
- [00:10:04.590]substance use services, eating disorder services
- [00:10:08.620]and things like that.
- [00:10:10.170]We provide outreach and workshops.
- [00:10:12.530]These things are provided both with events that we attend
- [00:10:15.673]workshops on anxiety, depression.
- [00:10:18.160]We go into different classrooms
- [00:10:19.460]and talk about those things
- [00:10:20.293]and front of our services that way.
- [00:10:23.000]We do have online screenings.
- [00:10:24.280]I'll share a little bit about that here in a moment.
- [00:10:26.820]And then consultation collaboration.
- [00:10:28.410]So whether that be
- [00:10:29.243]with other departments on campus, professors,
- [00:10:32.110]those types of things,
- [00:10:32.943]can always reach out if they need support in that way.
- [00:10:38.080]Our individual and group therapy services
- [00:10:40.080]are at no charge to UNL students.
- [00:10:42.049]We work with students one-on-one
- [00:10:43.970]to find individual treatment plan that fits their needs.
- [00:10:47.660]And there's a fee related to no shows, late cancellations.
- [00:10:52.150]We saw students attend their appointments
- [00:10:53.630]communicate they need to change anything.
- [00:10:55.230]Otherwise services are free
- [00:10:56.340]for individual and group counseling.
- [00:10:58.500]There are a few services that do require a fee.
- [00:11:00.750]So things such as mandated alcohol
- [00:11:02.290]and other drug evaluations,
- [00:11:03.610]and the mandated alcohol
- [00:11:04.800]and other drug psychoeducation classes, do require a fee.
- [00:11:08.110]And there's more information
- [00:11:08.943]about that on our website as well.
- [00:11:14.420]Just a little bit.
- [00:11:15.253]I wanted to highlight our website
- [00:11:16.730]and a couple pieces related to this.
- [00:11:18.410]We have a lot of information related to our services.
- [00:11:21.270]How students can initiate a first appointment
- [00:11:24.380]different resources related to self-guided
- [00:11:26.720]mental health resources,
- [00:11:28.590]and all of our forms, paperwork,
- [00:11:30.160]all that stuff is on our website.
- [00:11:31.330]So I just wanted to highlight this.
- [00:11:32.640]I think it's really helpful for any students
- [00:11:34.300]interested in our services to maybe learn more about it.
- [00:11:37.990]I know sometimes it's hard to know what to expect
- [00:11:40.870]or what resources can be available
- [00:11:42.470]if they're feeling
- [00:11:43.303]like they're not quite ready for counseling
- [00:11:44.500]but needing some support in different ways.
- [00:11:46.384]So you can see some different options up in that toolbar.
- [00:11:49.690]And so just encourage you all to follow through.
- [00:11:55.430]Did wanna highlight just briefly the student resources.
- [00:11:57.900]So as you can see,
- [00:11:58.930]we have some nine different pieces here
- [00:12:01.750]related to resources students can access at any time.
- [00:12:04.270]So we have our online mental health screening,
- [00:12:07.050]things related to suicide prevention,
- [00:12:08.580]the REACH program, common concerns.
- [00:12:11.430]So just some different issues related to,
- [00:12:14.120]maybe a student is struggling with anxiety
- [00:12:15.910]and wanting to learn some self help resources.
- [00:12:17.500]That way frequently asked questions
- [00:12:20.930]all those different pieces.
- [00:12:22.010]So the new feature we do have
- [00:12:24.250]is a self guided mental health resources,
- [00:12:25.910]right in the middle.
- [00:12:27.230]I highly recommend if your student is interested
- [00:12:29.300]in learning a little bit more about those things
- [00:12:31.290]or how to manage those things in the meantime,
- [00:12:33.010]before starting an appointment
- [00:12:34.600]these can be a really helpful tool.
- [00:12:39.780]So we do utilize our relationships
- [00:12:41.450]with other UNL providers on campus
- [00:12:43.330]to make sure we are connecting students
- [00:12:46.130]to the things that'll be most helpful for them.
- [00:12:47.770]So obviously coming in for counseling
- [00:12:49.560]whether that be groups, individual sessions are great,
- [00:12:52.320]but we do try our best to connect students
- [00:12:54.240]when they are coming in for different issues.
- [00:12:55.810]So you can see...
- [00:12:57.230]I'm not going through all of these,
- [00:12:58.140]but these are a few different areas
- [00:12:59.760]that we try to connect with the most.
- [00:13:01.530]So whether that be connecting
- [00:13:02.410]with Big Red Resilience and Well-being,
- [00:13:04.600]to discuss some of those other dimensions
- [00:13:06.830]and areas that they can work on.
- [00:13:09.340]Things like student affairs
- [00:13:10.670]and student support and advocacy.
- [00:13:12.130]So if a student is needing to address some academic concerns
- [00:13:14.750]we'll try our best to connect with student way.
- [00:13:17.290]And so if you ever have questions more about those things,
- [00:13:20.690]feel free to ask.
- [00:13:24.980]So making appointment is easy.
- [00:13:26.501]Our initial evaluations is our first appointment.
- [00:13:29.410]And so all a student needs to do is either stop by
- [00:13:32.160]or call our front desk to schedule an appointment.
- [00:13:35.270]I wanna highlight
- [00:13:36.140]that these first appointments are same day.
- [00:13:37.930]So for a student who's interested in starting counseling
- [00:13:41.481]they can just call in the day that they wanna come in.
- [00:13:44.620]We recommend calling earlier in the morning.
- [00:13:46.410]So we have a variety
- [00:13:47.350]of options for times that they can work with their schedule
- [00:13:50.230]to come in and meet with somebody.
- [00:13:52.590]And then in that first appointment,
- [00:13:54.580]a counselor will work with them to decide
- [00:13:57.190]what services will be a best fit.
- [00:13:58.810]So whether that be a group,
- [00:14:00.730]maybe they're looking at creating
- [00:14:02.480]a individual counseling kind of plan
- [00:14:04.610]and how many sessions they'd like to attend.
- [00:14:06.850]And so I think it's a really great tool.
- [00:14:08.620]They don't have to wait to come in,
- [00:14:09.980]and then we decide what steps moving forward
- [00:14:11.680]will make the most sense for them,
- [00:14:12.790]and, or other resources on campus.
- [00:14:16.120]We do have immediate support available
- [00:14:18.050]through our counselor on duty,
- [00:14:19.230]that's available 24/7,
- [00:14:20.670]just by calling our our phone number there at 402-472-7450.
- [00:14:25.730]So that's available 24/7,
- [00:14:27.009]outside of business hours when we're not open,
- [00:14:29.520]on the weekends, in the evenings.
- [00:14:30.874]We recognize that,
- [00:14:33.620]crisis isn't always coming up Monday through Friday,
- [00:14:35.890]eight to five when we're open.
- [00:14:37.100]So we have someone available 24/7 that way.
- [00:14:40.250]But our hours are Monday through Friday, eight to five
- [00:14:42.830]and our staff will be here during then.
- [00:14:48.440]Okay, and as I mentioned,
- [00:14:50.030]if a student is in crisis
- [00:14:51.190]or has an urgent need to talk with a counselor
- [00:14:52.870]when our office closed,
- [00:14:54.480]we obviously encourage calling 911.
- [00:14:56.090]If it's a medical emergency,
- [00:14:58.330]medication is all handled through the health center,
- [00:15:00.440]so we included the health center's number right there
- [00:15:03.420]and then our main number right there,
- [00:15:05.320]listed in that third bullet
- [00:15:06.480]and students can follow the prompt
- [00:15:08.010]to talk with an on call counselor.
- [00:15:10.430]The nice thing with that as well is,
- [00:15:13.800]once they call in for the on call counselor,
- [00:15:15.880]our staff will connect with them.
- [00:15:17.200]If they desire the next business day
- [00:15:18.900]get them in for a session, those types of things too.
- [00:15:22.510]Thank you so much for joining us.
- [00:15:24.870]If you have any questions
- [00:15:25.780]please feel free to contact our offices.
- [00:15:29.289]Thank you so much.
- [00:15:30.470]Everyone take care.
